This extends previous work of the authors in which they considered the case of prime power moduli $q$. Above, $α_2$ is arbitrary but fixed and $α_3$ is variable, and we assume that $(α_2α_3,q)=1$. We show that for all $α_3$ modulo $q$ which are coprime to $q$ except for a small number of $α_3$'s, an asymptotic formula for the number of solutions $(x_1,x_2,x_3)$ to the congruence $x_1^2+α_2x_2^2+α_3x_3^2\equiv 0 \bmod{q}$ with $\max\{|x_1|,|x_2|,|x_3|\}\le N$ and $(x_3,q)=1$ holds if $N\ge q^{11/24+\varepsilon}$ and $q$ is large enough. It is of significance that we break the barrier 1/2 in the above exponent. Key tools in our work are Burgess's estimate for character sums over short intervals and Heath-Brown's estimate for character sums with binary quadratic forms over small regions whose proofs depend on the Riemann hypothesis for curves over finite fields. We also formulate a refined conjecture about the size of the smallest solution of a ternary quadratic congruence, using information about the Diophantine properties of its coefficients.

If $q$ is restricted to powers $p^m$ of a {\it fixed} prime $p$ and $m$ tends to infinity, we obtain a slight improvement of this result using the theory of $p$-adic exponent pairs, as developed by Milićević, replacing the exponent $11/24$ above by $11/25$. Under the Lindelöf hypothesis for Dirichlet $L$-functions, we are able to replace the exponent $11/24$ above by $1/3$.

In recent decades, the development of new drugs has become increasingly expensive and inefficient, and the molecular mechanisms of most pharmaceuticals remain poorly understood. In response, computational systems and network medicine tools have emerged to identify potential drug repurposing candidates. However, these tools often require complex installation and lack intuitive visual network mining capabilities. To tackle these challenges, we introduce Drugst. One, a platform that assists specialized computational medicine tools in becoming user-friendly, web-based utilities for drug repurposing. With just three lines of code, Drugst. One turns any systems biology software into an interactive web tool for modeling and analyzing complex protein-drug-disease networks. Demonstrating its broad adaptability, Drugst. One has been successfully integrated with 21 computational systems medicine tools. Available at https://drugst.one, Drugst. One has significant potential for streamlining the drug discovery process, allowing researchers to focus on essential aspects of pharmaceutical treatment research.

In the thirties of the last century, I. M. Vinogradov proved that the inequality $||pα||\le p^{-1/5+\varepsilon}$ has infinitely prime solutions $p$, where $||.||$ denotes the distance to a nearest integer. This result has subsequently been improved by many authors. In particular, Vaughan (1978) replaced the exponent $1/5$ by $1/4$ using his celebrated identity for the von Mangoldt function and a refinement of Fourier analytic arguments. The current record is due to Matomäki (2009) who showed the infinitude of prime solutions of the inequality $||pα||\le p^{-1/3+\varepsilon}$. This exponent $1/3$ is considered the limit of the current technology. Recently, in \cite{BaMo}, the authors established an analogue of Matomäki's result for imaginary quadratic extensions of the function field $k=\mathbb{F}_q(T)$. In this paper, we consider the case of real quadratic extensions of $k$ of class number 1, for which we prove a function field analogue of Vaughan's above-mentioned result (exponent $θ=1/4$). Our method uses versions of Vaughan's identity and the Dirichlet approximation theorem for function fields. The latter was established by Arijit Ganguly in the appendix to our previous paper \cite{BaMo} on the imaginary quadratic case. We also simplify arguments in the paper \cite{BM} on the same problem for real quadratic number fields by D. Mazumder and the first-named author.

Their analysis led them to averages of certain Weyl sums. The condition of $D$ being square-free is essential in their work. We investigate the "opposite" case when $D=n^2$ is a square of an odd integer $n$. This case is different in nature and leads to sums of Kloosterman sums. We obtain an asymptotic formula for solutions with $x_3\asymp M$, where $M\ge D^{1/2-1/16+\varepsilon}$ for any fixed $\varepsilon>0$.

The generation of entanglement between remote matter qubits has developed into a key capability for fundamental investigations as well as for emerging quantum technologies. In the single-photon, protocol entanglement is heralded by generation of qubit-photon entangled states and subsequent detection of a single photon behind a beam splitter. In this work we perform a detailed theoretical and experimental investigation of this protocol and its various sources of infidelity. We develop an extensive theoretical model and subsequently tailor it to our experimental setting, based on nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. Experimentally, we verify the model by generating remote states for varying phase and amplitudes of the initial qubit superposition states and varying optical phase difference of the photons arriving at the beam splitter. We show that a static frequency offset between the optical transitions of the qubits leads to an entangled state phase that depends on the photon detection time. We find that the implementation of a Charge-Resonance check on the nitrogen-vacancy center yields transform-limited linewidths. Moreover, we measure the probability of double optical excitation, a significant source of infidelity, as a function of the power of the excitation pulse. Finally, we find that imperfect optical excitation can lead to a detection-arm-dependent entangled state fidelity and rate. The conclusion presented here are not specific to the nitrogen-vacancy centers used to carry out the experiments, and are therefore readily applicable to other qubit platforms.

Keating and Rudnick derived asymptotic formulas for the variances of primes in arithmetic progressions and short intervals in the function field setting. Here we consider the hybrid problem of calculating the variance of primes in intersections of arithmetic progressions and short intervals. Keating and Rudnick used an involution to translate short intervals into arithmetic progressions. We follow their approach but apply this involution, in addition, to the arithmetic progressions. This creates dual arithmetic progressions in the case when the modulus $Q$ is a polynomial in $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ such that $Q(0)\not=0$. The latter is a restriction which we keep throughout our paper. At the end, we discuss what is needed to relax this condition.

Here, we perform a careful characterisation of the s-wave scattering length $a_s$ for the four highest-abundance isotopes of erbium, in the magnetic field range from 0G to 5G. We report on cross-dimensional thermalization measurements and apply the Enskog equations of change to numerically simulate the thermalization process and to analytically extract an expression for the so-called number of collisions per re-thermalization (NCPR) to obtain $a_s$ from our experimental data. We benchmark the applied cross-dimensional thermalization technique with the experimentally more demanding lattice modulation spectroscopy and find good agreement for our parameter regime. Our experiments are compatible with a dependence of the NCPR with $a_s$, as theoretically expected in the case of strongly dipolar gases. Surprisingly, we experimentally observe a dependency of the NCPR on the density, which might arise due to deviations from an ideal harmonic trapping configuration. Finally, we apply a model for the dependency of the background scattering length with the isotope mass, allowing to estimate the number of bound states of erbium.

Quantum networks can enable long-range quantum communication and modular quantum computation. A powerful approach is to use multi-qubit network nodes which provide the quantum memory and computational power to perform entanglement distillation, quantum error correction, and information processing. Nuclear spins associated with optically-active defects in diamond are promising qubits for this role. However, their dephasing during entanglement distribution across the optical network hinders scaling to larger systems. In this work, we show that a single 13C spin in isotopically engineered diamond offers a long-lived quantum memory that is robust to the optical link operation of an NV centre. The memory lifetime is improved by two orders-of-magnitude upon the state-of-the-art, and exceeds the best reported times for remote entanglement generation. We identify ionisation of the NV centre as a newly limiting decoherence mechanism. As a first step towards overcoming this limitation, we demonstrate that the nuclear spin state can be retrieved with high fidelity after a complete cycle of ionisation and recapture. Finally, we use numerical simulations to show that the combination of this improved memory lifetime with previously demonstrated entanglement links and gate operations can enable key primitives for quantum networks, such as deterministic non-local two-qubit logic operations and GHZ state creation across four network nodes. Our results pave the way for test-bed quantum networks capable of investigating complex algorithms and error correction.

Future quantum internet applications will derive their power from the ability to share quantum information across the network. Quantum teleportation allows for the reliable transfer of quantum information between distant nodes, even in the presence of highly lossy network connections. While many experimental demonstrations have been performed on different quantum network platforms, moving beyond directly connected nodes has so far been hindered by the demanding requirements on the pre-shared remote entanglement, joint qubit readout and coherence times. Here we realize quantum teleportation between remote, non-neighboring nodes in a quantum network. The network employs three optically connected nodes based on solid-state spin qubits. The teleporter is prepared by establishing remote entanglement on the two links, followed by entanglement swapping on the middle node and storage in a memory qubit. We demonstrate that once successful preparation of the teleporter is heralded, arbitrary qubit states can be teleported with fidelity above the classical bound, even with unit efficiency. These results are enabled by key innovations in the qubit readout procedure, active memory qubit protection during entanglement generation and tailored heralding that reduces remote entanglement infidelities. Our work demonstrates a prime building block for future quantum networks and opens the door to exploring teleportation-based multi-node protocols and applications.

In the thirties of the last century, I. M. Vinogradov established uniform distribution modulo 1 of the sequence $pα$ when $α$ is a fixed irrational real number and $p$ runs over the primes. In particular, he showed that the inequality $||pα||\le p^{-1/5+\varepsilon}$ has infinitely prime solutions $p$, where $||.||$ denotes the distance to the nearest integer. This result has subsequently been improved by many authors. The current record is due to Matomäki (2009) who showed the infinitude of prime solutions of the inequality $||pα||\le p^{-1/3+\varepsilon}$. This exponent $1/3$ is considered the limit of the current technology. We prove function field analogues of this result for the fields $k=\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ and imaginary quadratic extensions $K$ of $k$. Essential in our method is the Dirichlet approximation theorem for function fields which is established in general form in the appendix authored by Arijit Ganguly.

In 2020, Roger Baker \cite{Bak} proved a result on the exceptional set of moduli in the prime number theorem for arithmetic progressions of the following kind. Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a set of pairwise coprime moduli $q\le x^{9/40}$. Then the primes $l\le x$ distribute as expected in arithmetic progressions mod $q$, except for a subset of $\mathcal{S}$ whose cardinality is bounded by a power of $\log x$. We use a $p$-adic variant Harman's sieve to extend Baker's range to $q\le x^{1/4-\varepsilon}$ if $\mathcal{S}$ is restricted to prime powers $p^N$, where $p\le (\log x)^C$ for some fixed but arbitrary $C>0$. For large enough $C$, we thus get an almost all result. Previously, an asymptotic estimate for $π(x;p^N,a)$ of the expected kind, with $p$ being an odd prime, was established in the wider range $p^N\le x^{3/8-\varepsilon}$ by Barban, Linnik and Chudakov \cite{BLC}. Gallagher \cite{Gal} extended this range to $p^N\le x^{2/5-\varepsilon}$ and Huxley \cite{Hux2} improved Gallagher's exponent to $5/12$. A lower bound of the correct order of magnitude was recently established by Banks and Shparlinski \cite{BaS} for the even wider range $p^N\le x^{0.4736}$. However, all these results hold for {\it fixed} primes $p$, and the $O$-constants in the relevant estimates depend on $p$. Therefore, they do not contain our result. In a part of our article, we describe how our method relates to these results.

Here we improve the relevant exponent $1/4$ obtained by the first and third named authors for imaginary quadratic number fields \cite{BT} and by the first and second named authors for real quadratic number fields \cite{BM} to $7/22$. This generalizes a result of Harman \cite{HarZi} who obtained the same exponent $7/22$ for $\mathbb{Q}(i)$ by extending his method which gave this exponent for $\mathbb{Q}$ \cite{harman1996on-the-distribu}. Our proof is based on an extension of his sieve method to arbitrary number fields. Moreover, we need an asymptotic evaluation of certain smooth sums over prime ideals appearing in \cite{BM}, for which we use analytic properties of Hecke L-functions with Größencharacters.

Here we report on the experimental realization of a three-node entanglement-based quantum network. We combine remote quantum nodes based on diamond communication qubits into a scalable phase-stabilized architecture, supplemented with a robust memory qubit and local quantum logic. In addition, we achieve real-time communication and feed-forward gate operations across the network. We capitalize on the novel capabilities of this network to realize two canonical protocols without post-selection: the distribution of genuine multipartite entangled states across the three nodes and entanglement swapping through an intermediary node. Our work establishes a key platform for exploring, testing and developing multi-node quantum network protocols and a quantum network control stack.

Conformance checking is a set of process mining functions that compare process instances with a given process model. It identifies deviations between the process instances' actual behaviour ("as-is") and its modelled behaviour ("to-be"). Especially in the context of analyzing compliance in organizations, it is currently gaining momentum -- e.g. for auditors. Researchers have proposed a variety of conformance checking techniques that are geared towards certain process model notations or specific applications such as process model evaluation. This article reviews a set of conformance checking techniques described in 37 scholarly publications. It classifies the techniques along the dimensions "modelling language", "algorithm type", "quality metric", and "perspective" using a concept matrix so that the techniques can be better accessed by practitioners and researchers. The matrix highlights the dimensions where extant research concentrates and where blind spots exist. For instance, process miners use declarative process modelling languages often, but applications in conformance checking are rare. Likewise, process mining can investigate process roles or process metrics such as duration, but conformance checking techniques narrow on analyzing control-flow. Future research may construct techniques that support these neglected approaches to conformance checking.

It is natural to ask for which exponents $ν>0$ one can establish the infinitude of primes $p$ satisfying $||αp||\le p^{-ν}$. The latest record in this regard is Kaisa Matomäki's landmark result $ν=1/3-\varepsilon$ which presents the limit of currently known technology. Recently, Glyn Harman, and, jointly, Marc Technau and the first-named author, investigated the same problem in the context of imaginary quadratic fields. Glyn Harman obtained an analog for $\mathbb{Q}(i)$ of his result in the context of $\mathbb{Q}$, which yields an exponent of $ν=7/22$. Marc Technau and the first-named author produced an analogue of Bob Vaughan's result $ν=1/4-\varepsilon$ for all imaginary quadratic number fields of class number 1. In the present article, we establish an analog of the last-mentioned result for real quadratic fields of class number 1 under a certain Diophantine restriction. This setting involves the additional complication of an infinite group of units in the ring of integers. Moreover, although the basic sieve approach remains the same (we use an ideal version of Harman's sieve), the problem takes a different flavor since it becomes truly 2-dimensional. We reduce it eventually to a counting problem which is, interestingly, related to roots of quadratic congruences. To approximate them, we use an approach by Christopher Hooley based on the theory of binary quadratic forms.

One of the biggest hurdles for customers when purchasing fashion online, is the difficulty of finding products with the right fit. In order to provide a better online shopping experience, platforms need to find ways to recommend the right product sizes and the best fitting products to their customers. These recommendation systems, however, require customer feedback in order to estimate the most suitable sizing options. Such feedback is rare and often only available as natural text. In this paper, we examine the extraction of product fit feedback from customer reviews using natural language processing techniques. In particular, we compare traditional methods with more recent transfer learning techniques for text classification, and analyze their results. Our evaluation shows, that the transfer learning approach ULMFit is not only comparatively fast to train, but also achieves highest accuracy on this task. The integration of the extracted information with actual size recommendation systems is left for future work.

The proof is based on Harman's sieve method and employs number field analogues of classical ideas due to Vinogradov. Moreover, we introduce a smoothing which allows us to make conveniently use of the Poisson summation formula.

Dipolar interactions are ubiquitous in nature and rule the behavior of a broad range of systems spanning from energy transfer in biological systems to quantum magnetism. Here, we study magnetization-conserving dipolar induced spin-exchange dynamics in dense arrays of fermionic erbium atoms confined in a deep three-dimensional lattice. Harnessing the special atomic properties of erbium, we demonstrate control over the spin dynamics by tuning the dipole orientation and changing the initial spin state within the large 20 spin hyperfine manifold. Furthermore, we demonstrate the capability to quickly turn on and off the dipolar exchange dynamics via optical control. The experimental observations are in excellent quantitative agreement with numerical calculations based on discrete phase-space methods, which capture entanglement and beyond-mean field effects. Our experiment sets the stage for future explorations of rich magnetic behaviors in long-range interacting dipoles, including exotic phases of matter and applications for quantum information processing.

Structured scene descriptions of images are useful for the automatic processing and querying of large image databases. We show how the combination of a semantic and a visual statistical model can improve on the task of mapping images to their associated scene description. In this paper we consider scene descriptions which are represented as a set of triples (subject, predicate, object), where each triple consists of a pair of visual objects, which appear in the image, and the relationship between them (e.g. man-riding-elephant, man-wearing-hat). We combine a standard visual model for object detection, based on convolutional neural networks, with a latent variable model for link prediction. We apply multiple state-of-the-art link prediction methods and compare their capability for visual relationship detection. One of the main advantages of link prediction methods is that they can also generalize to triples, which have never been observed in the training data. Our experimental results on the recently published Stanford Visual Relationship dataset, a challenging real world dataset, show that the integration of a semantic model using link prediction methods can significantly improve the results for visual relationship detection. Our combined approach achieves superior performance compared to the state-of-the-art method from the Stanford computer vision group.

Recently it was experimentally observed that the FS is deformed from a sphere to an ellipsoid due to the presence of the anisotropic and long-range dipole-dipole interaction. Moreover, it was suggested that, when the dipoles are rotated by means of an external field, the FS follows their rotation, thereby keeping the major axis of the momentum-space ellipsoid parallel to the dipoles. Here we generalise a previous Hartree-Fock mean-field theory to systems confined in an elongated triaxial trap with an arbitrary orientation of the dipoles relative to the trap. With this we study for the first time the effects of the dipoles' arbitrary orientation on the ground-state properties of the system. Furthermore, taking into account the geometry of the system, we show how the ellipsoidal FS deformation can be reconstructed, assuming ballistic expansion, from the experimentally measurable real-space aspect ratio after a free expansion. We compare our theoretical results with new experimental data measured with an erbium Fermi gas for various trap parameters and dipole orientations. The observed remarkable agreement demonstrates the ability of our model to capture the full angular dependence of the FS deformation. Moreover, for systems with even higher dipole moment, our theory predicts an additional unexpected effect: the FS does not simply follow rigidly the orientation of the dipoles, but softens showing a change in the aspect ratio depending on the dipoles' orientation relative to the trap geometry, as well as on the trap anisotropy itself. Our theory provides the basis for understanding and interpreting phenomena in which the investigated physics depends on the underlying structure of the FS, such as fermionic pairing and superfluidity.

Employing a lattice-protection technique, we selectively prepare deeply degenerate mixtures of the two lowest spin states and perform high-resolution Feshbach spectroscopy in an optical dipole trap. We identify a comparatively broad Feshbach resonance and map the interspin scattering length in its vicinity. The Fermi mixture shows a remarkable collisional stability in the strongly interacting regime, providing a first step towards studies of superfluid pairing, crossing from Cooper pairs to bound molecules, in presence of dipole-dipole interactions.

Modeling inverse dynamics is crucial for accurate feedforward robot control. The model computes the necessary joint torques, to perform a desired movement. The highly non-linear inverse function of the dynamical system can be approximated using regression techniques. We propose as regression method a tensor decomposition model that exploits the inherent three-way interaction of positions x velocities x accelerations. Most work in tensor factorization has addressed the decomposition of dense tensors. In this paper, we build upon the decomposition of sparse tensors, with only small amounts of nonzero entries. The decomposition of sparse tensors has successfully been used in relational learning, e.g., the modeling of large knowledge graphs. Recently, the approach has been extended to multi-class classification with discrete input variables. Representing the data in high dimensional sparse tensors enables the approximation of complex highly non-linear functions. In this paper we show how the decomposition of sparse tensors can be applied to regression problems. Furthermore, we extend the method to continuous inputs, by learning a mapping from the continuous inputs to the latent representations of the tensor decomposition, using basis functions. We evaluate our proposed model on a dataset with trajectories from a seven degrees of freedom SARCOS robot arm. Our experimental results show superior performance of the proposed functional tensor model, compared to challenging state-of-the art methods.

With the rising number of interconnected devices and sensors, modeling distributed sensor networks is of increasing interest. Recurrent neural networks (RNN) are considered particularly well suited for modeling sensory and streaming data. When predicting future behavior, incorporating information from neighboring sensor stations is often beneficial. We propose a new RNN based architecture for context specific information fusion across multiple spatially distributed sensor stations. Hereby, latent representations of multiple local models, each modeling one sensor station, are jointed and weighted, according to their importance for the prediction. The particular importance is assessed depending on the current context using a separate attention function. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our model on three different real-world sensor network datasets.

We report on the determination of the dynamical polarizability of ultracold erbium atoms in the ground and in one excited state at three different wavelengths, which are particularly relevant for optical trapping. Our study combines experimental measurements of the light shift and theoretical calculations. In particular, our experimental approach allows us to isolate the different contributions to the polarizability, namely the isotropic scalar and anisotropic tensor part. For the latter contribution, we observe a clear dependence of the atomic polarizability on the angle between the laser-field-polarization axis and the quantization axis, set by the external magnetic field. Such an angle-dependence is particularly pronounced in the excited-state polarizability. We compare our experimental findings with the theoretical values, based on semi-empirical electronic-structure calculations and we observe a very good overall agreement. Our results pave the way to exploit the anisotropy of the tensor polarizability for spin-selective preparation and manipulation.
