Understanding faint dwarf galaxies is fundamental to the development of a robust theory of galaxy formation on small scales. Since the discovery of a population of ultra diffuse galaxies (UDGs) rich in globular clusters (GCs) in Coma, an increasing number of studies on low surface brightness dwarf galaxies (LSBds) have been published in recent years. The most massive LSBds have been observed predominantly in groups and clusters, with properties displaying dependence on the environment. In this work, we use deep DECam imaging to systematically identify LSBds and their GC populations around the low-density environment of NGC 3115. We carefully analyse the structure and morphology of 24 candidates, 18 of which are reported for the first time. Most candidates exhibit red colours suggesting a connection between their colour and distance to NGC 3115. We followed up with Gemini GMOS imaging 9 LSBds to properly identify their GC populations. We derive lower limits for the number of GCs associated with each galaxy. Our analysis reveals that they occur around of the same loci of Fornax LSB dwarf GC systems. The relationship between the number of GCs and total mass provides a tool in which, by counting the GCs in these galaxies, we estimate an upper limit for the total mass of these LSB dwarfs, obtaining the mean value of $\sim 3.3\times10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$. Our results align with expectations for dwarf-sized galaxies, particularly regarding the distribution and specific frequency of their GC systems.

The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) is a project to map $\sim9300$ sq deg of the sky using twelve bands (seven narrow and five broadbands). Observations are performed with the T80-South telescope, a robotic telescope located at the Cerro Tololo Observatory in Chile. The survey footprint consists of several large contiguous areas, including fields at high and low galactic latitudes, and towards the Magellanic Clouds. S-PLUS uses fixed exposure times to reach point source depths of about $21$ mag in the $griz$ and $20$ mag in the $u$ and the narrow filters. This paper describes the S-PLUS Data Release 4 (DR4), which includes calibrated images and derived catalogues for over 3000 sq deg, covering the aforementioned area. The catalogues provide multi-band photometry performed with the tools \texttt{DoPHOT} and \texttt{SExtractor} -- point spread function (\PSF) and aperture photometry, respectively. In addition to the characterization, we also present the scientific potential of the data. We use statistical tools to present and compare the photometry obtained through different methods. Overall we find good agreement between the different methods, with a slight systematic offset of 0.05\,mag between our \PSF and aperture photometry. We show that the astrometry accuracy is equivalent to that obtained in previous S-PLUS data releases, even in very crowded fields where photometric extraction is challenging. The depths of main survey (MS) photometry for a minimum signal-to-noise ratio $S/N = 3$ reach from $\sim19.5$ for the bluer bands to $\sim21.5$ mag on the red. The range of magnitudes over which accurate \PSF photometry is obtained is shallower, reaching $\sim19$ to $\sim20.5$ mag depending on the filter. Based on these photometric data, we provide star-galaxy-quasar classification and photometric redshift for millions of objects.

The ESO public survey VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) surveyed the inner Galactic bulge and the adjacent southern Galactic disk from $2009-2015$. Upon its conclusion, the complementary VVV eXtended (VVVX) survey has expanded both the temporal as well as spatial coverage of the original VVV area, widening it from $562$ to $1700$ sq. deg., as well as providing additional epochs in $JHK_{\rm s}$ filters from $2016-2023$. With the completion of VVVX observations during the first semester of 2023, we present here the observing strategy, a description of data quality and access, and the legacy of VVVX. VVVX took $\sim 2000$ hours, covering about 4% of the sky in the bulge and southern disk. VVVX covered most of the gaps left between the VVV and the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) areas and extended the VVV time baseline in the obscured regions affected by high extinction and hence hidden from optical observations. VVVX provides a deep $JHK_{\rm s}$ catalogue of $\gtrsim 1.5\times10^9$ point sources, as well as a $K_{\rm s}$ band catalogue of $\sim 10^7$ variable sources. Within the existing VVV area, we produced a $5D$ map of the surveyed region by combining positions, distances, and proper motions of well-understood distance indicators such as red clump stars, RR Lyrae, and Cepheid variables. In March 2023 we successfully finished the VVVX survey observations that started in 2016, an accomplishment for ESO Paranal Observatory upon 4200 hours of observations for VVV+VVVX. The VVV+VVVX catalogues complement those from the Gaia mission at low Galactic latitudes and provide spectroscopic targets for the forthcoming ESO high-multiplex spectrographs MOONS and 4MOST.

We fit various colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the high-latitude Galactic globular clusters NGC\,5024 (M53), NGC\,5053, NGC\,5272 (M3), NGC\,5466, and NGC\,7099 (M30) by isochrones from the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database and Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones for $α$-enrichment [$α$/Fe]$=+0.4$. For the CMDs, we use data sets from {\it Hubble Space Telescope}, {\it Gaia}, and other sources utilizing, at least, 25 photometric filters for each cluster. We obtain the following characteristics with their statistic uncertainties for NGC\,5024, NGC\,5053, NGC\,5272, NGC\,5466, and NGC\,7099, respectively: metallicities [Fe/H]$=-1.93\pm0.02$, $-2.08\pm0.03$, $-1.60\pm0.02$, $-1.95\pm0.02$, and $-2.07\pm0.04$ dex with their systematic uncertainty 0.1 dex; ages $13.00\pm0.11$, $12.70\pm0.11$, $11.63\pm0.07$, $12.15\pm0.11$, and $12.80\pm0.17$ Gyr with their systematic uncertainty 0.8 Gyr; distances (systematic uncertainty added) $18.22\pm0.06\pm0.60$, $16.99\pm0.06\pm0.56$, $10.08\pm0.04\pm0.33$, $15.59\pm0.03\pm0.51$, and $8.29\pm0.03\pm0.27$ kpc; reddenings $E(B-V)=0.023\pm0.004$, $0.017\pm0.004$, $0.023\pm0.004$, $0.023\pm0.003$, and $0.045\pm0.002$ mag with their systematic uncertainty 0.01 mag; extinctions $A_\mathrm{V}=0.08\pm0.01$, $0.06\pm0.01$, $0.08\pm0.01$, $0.08\pm0.01$, and $0.16\pm0.01$ mag with their systematic uncertainty 0.03 mag, which suggest the total Galactic extinction $A_\mathrm{V}=0.08$ across the whole Galactic dust to extragalactic objects at the North Galactic pole. The horizontal branch morphology difference of these clusters is explained by their different metallicity, age, mass-loss efficiency, and loss of low-mass members in the evolution of the core-collapse cluster NGC\,7099 and loose clusters NGC\,5053 and NGC\,5466.

We fit various colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the Galactic globular clusters NGC\,6397 and NGC\,6809 (M55) by isochrones from the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database (DSED) and Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones (BaSTI) for $α$-enhanced [$α$/Fe]$=+0.4$. For the CMDs, we use data sets from {\it HST}, {\it Gaia}, VISTA, and other sources utilizing 32 and 23 photometric filters for NGC\,6397 and NGC\,6809, respectively, from the ultraviolet to mid-infrared. We obtain the following characteristics for NGC\,6397 and NGC\,6809, respectively: metallicities [Fe/H]$=-1.84\pm0.02\pm0.1$ and $-1.78\pm0.02\pm0.1$ (statistic and systematic uncertainties); distances $2.45\pm0.02\pm0.06$ and $5.24\pm0.02\pm0.18$ kpc; ages $12.9\pm0.1\pm0.8$ and $13.0\pm0.1\pm0.8$ Gyr; reddenings $E(B-V)=0.178\pm0.006\pm0.01$ and $0.118\pm0.004\pm0.01$ mag; extinctions $A_\mathrm{V}=0.59\pm0.01\pm0.02$ and $0.37\pm0.01\pm0.04$ mag; extinction-to-reddening ratio $R_\mathrm{V}=3.32^{+0.32}_{-0.28}$ and $3.16^{+0.66}_{-0.56}$. Our estimates agree with most estimates from the literature. BaSTI gives systematically higher [Fe/H] and lower reddenings than DSED. Despite nearly the same metallicity, age, and helium enrichment, these clusters show a considerable horizontal branch (HB) morphology difference, which must therefore be described by another parameter. This parameter must predominantly explain why the least massive HB stars (0.58-0.63 solar masses) are only found within NGC 6809. Probably they have been lost by the core-collapse cluster NGC\,6397 during its dynamical evolution and mass segregation. In contrast, NGC\,6809 has a very low central concentration and, hence, did not undergo this process.

The presence of Multiple Stellar Populations (MSPs) in Galactic Globular Clusters (GCs) is a poorly understood phenomenon. By probing different spectral ranges that are affected by different absorption lines using the multi-band photometric survey S-PLUS, we study four GCs -- NGC 104, NGC 288, NGC 3201 and NGC 7089 -- that span a wide range in metallicities. With the combination of broad and narrow-band photometry in 12 different filters from 3485A (u) to 9114A (z), we identified MSPs along the rectified red-giant branch in colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and separated them using a K-means clustering algorithm. Additionally, we take advantage of the large Field of View of the S-PLUS detector to investigate radial trends in our sample. We report on six colour combinations that can be used to successfully identify two stellar populations in all studied clusters and show that they can be characterized as Na-rich and Na-poor. For both NGC 288 and NGC 7089, their radial profiles show a clear concentration of 2P. This directly supports the formation theories that propose an enrichment of the intra-cluster medium and subsequent star formation in the more dense central regions. However, in the case of NGC 3201, the trend is reversed. The 1P is more centrally concentrated, in direct contradiction with previous literature studies. NGC 104 shows a well-mixed population. We also constructed radial profiles up to 1 half-light radius of the clusters with HST data to highlight that radial differences are lost in the inner regions of the GCs and that wide-field studies are essential when studying this.

We analyse the globular cluster (GC) systems of a sample of 15 massive, compact early-type galaxies (ETGs), 13 of which have already been identified as good relic galaxy candidates on the basis of their compact morphologies, old stellar populations and stellar kinematics. These relic galaxy candidates are likely the nearby counterparts of high redshift red nugget galaxies. Using F814W (~I) and F160W (~H) data from the WFC3 camara onboard the Hubble Space Telescope we determine the total number, luminosity function, specific frequency, colour and spatial distribution of the GC systems. We find lower specific frequencies (SN<2.5 with a median of SN=1) than ETGs of comparable mass. This is consistent with a scenario of rapid, early dissipative formation, with relatively low levels of accretion of low-mass, high-SN satellites. The GC half-number radii are compact, but follow the relations found in normal ETGs. We identify an anticorrelation between the specific angular momentum (lambda_R) of the host galaxy and the (I-H) colour distribution width of their GC systems. Assuming that lambda_R provides a measure of the degree of dissipation in massive ETGs, we suggest that the (I-H) colour distribution width can be used as a proxy for the degree of complexity of the accretion histories in these systems.

A Multi-Band Catalog of 10978 Star Clusters, Associations and Candidates in the Milky Way

We present a catalog of Galactic star clusters, associations and candidates with 10978 entries. This multi-band catalog was constructed over 20 years, starting with visual inspections on the Digital Sky Survey and incremented with the 2MASS, WISE, VVV, Spitzer and Herschel surveys. Large and small catalogs, as well as papers on individual objects have been systematically cross-identified. The catalog provides Galactic and equatorial coordinates, angular diameters, and chronologically ordered designations, making it simple to assign discoveries, and verify how often the objects were cataloged by different authors, search methods and/or surveys. Detection in a single band is the minimum constraint to validate an entry. About 3200 objects have measured parameters in the literature. A fundamental contribution of the present study is to present additional $\approx7700$ objects for first analyses of nature, photometry, spectroscopy and structure. The present focus is not to compile or determine fundamental parameters, but to provide a catalog characterizing uniformly the entries. A major result is that now 4060 embedded clusters are catologed, a factor of $\approx2$ larger than open clusters. Besides cross-identifications in different references and wavelength domains, we also communicate the discovery of 638 star clusters and alike objects. The present general catalog provides previously studied objects and thousands of additional entries in a homogeneous way, a timely contribution to {\em Gaia} related works.

We report our study of features at the observed red end of the white dwarf cooling sequences for three Galactic globular clusters: NGC\,6397, 47\,Tucanae and M\,4. We use deep colour-magnitude diagrams constructed from archival Hubble Space Telescope (ACS) to systematically investigate the blue turn at faint magnitudes and the age determinations for each cluster. We find that the age difference between NGC\,6397 and 47\,Tuc is 1.98$^{+0.44}_{-0.26}$\,Gyr, consistent with the picture that metal-rich halo clusters were formed later than metal-poor halo clusters. We self-consistently include the effect of metallicity on the progenitor age and the initial-to-final mass relation. In contrast with previous investigations that invoked a single white dwarf mass for each cluster, the data shows a spread of white dwarf masses that better reproduce the shape and location of the blue turn. This effect alone, however, does not completely reproduce the observational data - the blue turn retains some mystery. In this context, we discuss several other potential problems in the models. These include possible partial mixing of H and He in the atmosphere of white dwarf stars, the lack of a good physical description of the collision-induced absorption process and uncertainties in the opacities at low temperatures. The latter are already known to be significant in the description of the cool main sequence. Additionally, we find that the present day local mass function of NGC\,6397 is consistent with a top-heavy type, while 47\,Tuc presents a bottom-heavy profile.

We study the kinematics and excitation mechanisms of H2 and [Fe II] lines in a sample of 67 emission-line galaxies with Infrared Telescope Facility SpeX near-infrared (NIR, 0.8-2.4 micrometers) spectroscopy together with new photoionisation models. H2 emission lines are systematically narrower than narrow-line region (NLR) lines, suggesting that the two are, very likely, kinematically disconnected. The new models and emission-line ratios show that the thermal excitation plays an important role not only in active galactic nuclei but also in star forming galaxies. The importance of the thermal excitation in star forming galaxies may be associated with the presence of supernova remnants close to the region emitting H2 lines. This hypothesis is further supported by the similarity between the vibrational and rotational temperatures of H2. We confirm that the diagram involving the line ratios H2 2.121/Br_gamma and [Fe II] 1.257/Pa_beta is an efficient tool for separating emission-line objects according to their dominant type of activity. We suggest new limits to the line ratios in order to discriminate between the different types of nuclear activity.

We present SOAR/OSIRIS cross-dispersed NIR integrated spectra of 12 Galactic globular clusters that are employed to test Maraston (2005, M05) NIR EPS models, and to provide spectral observational constraints to calibrate future models. We measured Ew of the most prominent NIR absorption features. Optical Ew were also measured. The globular clusters Ew were compared with model predictions with ages within 4-15 Gyr, and metallicities between 1/200 and 2 Zsun. Observed integrated colours were also compared with models. The NIR integrated spectra among our sample appear qualitatively similar in most the absorption features. The M05 models can properly predict the optical Ew observed in globular clusters. Regarding the NIR, they do underestimate the strength of Mg I 1.49mum, but they can reproduce the observed Ew of Fe I 1.58mum, Si I 1.59mum, and CO 2.29mum, in about half of our sample. The remaining objects require the inclusion of intermediate-age populations. Thus, we suggest that the presence of C- and O-rich stars in models is important to reproduce the observed strengths of metallic lines. Another possibility is the lack of alpha-enhancement in the models. In the case of the optical and NIR Fe I lines, standard models and those that include blue horizontal branch stars, produce similar results. A similar trend is observed for Na I 5895A, while in the case of the G-band, the models with blue horizontal branch do describe better the observations. For most of the sample the optical to NIR colours are well described by the M05 models. In general, M05 models can provide reliable information on the NIR stellar population of galaxies, but only when Ew and colours are taken together, in other words, Ew and continuum fluxes should be simultaneously fitted. However, the results should be taken with caution, since the models tend to predict results biased towards young ages.
