All physical observations are made relative to a reference frame, which is a system in its own right. If the system of interest admits a group symmetry, the reference frame observing it must transform commensurately under the group to ensure the covariance of the combined system. We point out that the crossed product is a way to realize quantum reference frames from the bottom-up; adjoining a quantum reference frame and imposing constraints generates a crossed product algebra. We provide a top-down specification of crossed product algebras and show that one cannot obtain inequivalent quantum reference frames using this approach. As a remedy, we define an abstract algebra associated to the system and symmetry group built out of relational crossed product algebras associated with different choices of quantum reference frames. We term this object the G-framed algebra, and show how potentially inequivalent frames are realized within this object. We comment on this algebra's analog of the classical Gribov problem in gauge theory, its importance in gravity where we show that it is relevant for semiclassical de Sitter and potentially beyond the semiclassical limit, and its utility for understanding the frame-dependence of physical notions like observables, density states, and entropies.

We construct approximately local observables, or "overlapping qubits", using non-isometric maps and show that processes in local effective theories can be spoofed with a quantum system with fewer degrees of freedom, similar to our expectation in holography. Furthermore, the spoofed system naturally deviates from an actual local theory in ways that can be identified with features in quantum gravity. For a concrete example, we construct two MERA toy models of de Sitter space-time and explain how the exponential expansion in global de Sitter can be spoofed with many fewer quantum degrees of freedom and that local physics may be approximately preserved for an exceedingly long time before breaking down. We highlight how approximate overlapping qubits are conceptually connected to Hilbert space dimension verification, degree-of-freedom counting in black holes and holography, and approximate locality in quantum gravity.

The evolution of the fireball resulting from the August 2020 Beirut explosion is traced using amateur footage taken during the first $\sim$ 230 $ms$ after the detonation. 38 frames separated by $\sim$ 16.66 - 33.33 $ms$ are extracted from 6 different videos located precisely on the map. Measurements of the time evolution of the radius $R_{t}$ of the shock wave are traced by the fireball at consecutive time sequence $t$. Pixel scales for the videos are calibrated by de-projecting the existing grains silos building for which accurate drawings are available and by defining the line of sight incident angles. The energy available to drive the shock wave at early times can be calculated through $E = 10^{2b} K ρ_{o}$ where $b$ is a fitted parameter dependant on the relation between $R_t$ and $t$. $K$ is a constant depending on the ratio of specific heats of the atmosphere and $ρ_0$ is the undisturbed gas density. A total energy yield of $E \approx 1.3\times 10^{12}$ Joules with a lower bound of $9.8\times 10^{11}$ and an upper bound of $\sim 1.7\times 10^{12}$ or the equivalent of $\sim 310_{235}^{405}$ tons of T.N.T. is found. Our energy yields are different from other published studies using the same method. This can present an argument that if the compound that exploded is fuel rich ammonium nitrate (ANFO), then the actual mass that detonated is less than officially claimed.

The harmonic oscillator is the paragon of physical models; conceptually and computationally simple, yet rich enough to teach us about physics on scales that span classical mechanics to quantum field theory. This multifaceted nature extends also to its inverted counterpart, in which the oscillator frequency is analytically continued to pure imaginary values. In this article we probe the inverted harmonic oscillator (IHO) with recently developed quantum chaos diagnostics such as the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) and the circuit complexity. In particular, we study the OTOC for the displacement operator of the IHO with and without a non-Gaussian cubic perturbation to explore genuine and quasi scrambling respectively. In addition, we compute the full quantum Lyapunov spectrum for the inverted oscillator, finding a paired structure among the Lyapunov exponents. We also use the Heisenberg group to compute the complexity for the time evolved displacement operator, which displays chaotic behaviour. Finally, we extended our analysis to N-inverted harmonic oscillators to study the behaviour of complexity at the different timescales encoded in dissipation, scrambling and asymptotic regimes.

This article tackles a fundamental long-standing problem in quantum chaos, namely, whether quantum chaotic systems can exhibit sensitivity to initial conditions, in a form that directly generalizes the notion of classical chaos in phase space. We develop a linear response theory for complexity, and demonstrate that the complexity can exhibit exponential sensitivity in response to perturbations of initial conditions for chaotic systems. Two immediate significant results follows: i) the complexity linear response matrix gives rise to a spectrum that fully recovers the Lyapunov exponents in the classical limit, and ii) the linear response of complexity is given by the out-of-time order correlators.

The concept of quantum complexity has far-reaching implications spanning theoretical computer science, quantum many-body physics, and high energy physics. The quantum complexity of a unitary transformation or quantum state is defined as the size of the shortest quantum computation that executes the unitary or prepares the state. It is reasonable to expect that the complexity of a quantum state governed by a chaotic many-body Hamiltonian grows linearly with time for a time that is exponential in the system size; however, because it is hard to rule out a short-cut that improves the efficiency of a computation, it is notoriously difficult to derive lower bounds on quantum complexity for particular unitaries or states without making additional assumptions. To go further, one may study more generic models of complexity growth. We provide a rigorous connection between complexity growth and unitary $k$-designs, ensembles which capture the randomness of the unitary group. This connection allows us to leverage existing results about design growth to draw conclusions about the growth of complexity. We prove that local random quantum circuits generate unitary transformations whose complexity grows linearly for a long time, mirroring the behavior one expects in chaotic quantum systems and verifying conjectures by Brown and Susskind. Moreover, our results apply under a strong definition of quantum complexity based on optimal distinguishing measurements.

Artificial Intelligence (AI), defined in its most simple form, is a technological tool that makes machines intelligent. Since learning is at the core of intelligence, machine learning poses itself as a core sub-field of AI. Then there comes a subclass of machine learning, known as deep learning, to address the limitations of their predecessors. AI has generally acquired its prominence over the past few years due to its considerable progress in various fields. AI has vastly invaded the realm of research. This has led physicists to attentively direct their research towards implementing AI tools. Their central aim has been to gain better understanding and enrich their intuition. This review article is meant to supplement the previously presented efforts to bridge the gap between AI and physics, and take a serious step forward to filter out the "Babelian" clashes brought about from such gabs. This necessitates first to have fundamental knowledge about common AI tools. To this end, the review's primary focus shall be on deep learning models called artificial neural networks. They are deep learning models which train themselves through different learning processes. It discusses also the concept of Markov decision processes. Finally, shortcut to the main goal, the review thoroughly examines how these neural networks are capable to construct a physical theory describing some observations without applying any previous physical knowledge.

Various theories that aim at unifying gravity with quantum mechanics suggest modifications of the Heisenberg algebra for position and momentum. From the perspective of quantum mechanics, such modifications lead to new uncertainty relations which are thought (but not proven) to imply the existence of a minimal observable length. Here we prove this statement in a framework of sufficient physical and structural assumptions. Moreover, we present a general method that allows to formulate optimal and state-independent variance-based uncertainty relations. In addition, instead of variances, we make use of entropies as a measure of uncertainty and provide uncertainty relations in terms of min- and Shannon entropies. We compute the corresponding entropic minimal lengths and find that the minimal length in terms of min-entropy is exactly one bit.

We discuss, from a quantum information perspective, recent proposals of Maldacena, Ryu, Takayanagi, van Raamsdonk, Swingle, and Susskind that spacetime is an emergent property of the quantum entanglement of an associated boundary quantum system. We review the idea that the informational principle of minimal complexity determines a dual holographic bulk spacetime from a minimal quantum circuit U preparing a given boundary state from a trivial reference state. We describe how this idea may be extended to determine the relationship between the fluctuations of the bulk holographic geometry and the fluctuations of the boundary low-energy subspace. In this way we obtain, for every quantum system, an Einstein-like equation of motion for what might be interpreted as a bulk gravity theory dual to the boundary system.

We provide a general algorithm for constructing the holographic dictionary for any asymptotically locally Lifshitz background, with or without hyperscaling violation, and for any values of the dynamical exponents $z$ and $θ$, as well as the vector hyperscaling violating exponent, that are compatible with the null energy condition. The analysis is carried out for a very general bottom up model of gravity coupled to a massive vector field and a dilaton with arbitrary scalar couplings. The solution of the radial Hamilton-Jacobi equation is obtained recursively in the form of a graded expansion in eigenfunctions of two commuting operators, which are the appropriate generalization of the dilatation operator for non scale invariant and Lorentz violating boundary conditions. The Fefferman-Graham expansions, the sources and 1-point functions of the dual operators, the Ward identities, as well as the local counterterms required for holographic renormalization all follow from this asymptotic solution of the radial Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We also find a family of exact backgrounds with $z>1$ and $θ>0$ corresponding to a marginal deformation shifting the vector hyperscaling violating parameter and we present an example where the conformal anomaly contains the only $z=2$ conformal invariant in $d=2$ with four spatial derivatives.

We present a general algorithm for constructing the holographic dictionary for Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating Lifshitz backgrounds for any value of the dynamical exponent $z$ and any value of the hyperscaling violation parameter $θ$ compatible with the null energy condition. The objective of the algorithm is the construction of the general asymptotic solution of the radial Hamilton-Jacobi equation subject to the desired boundary conditions, from which the full dictionary can be subsequently derived. Contrary to the relativistic case, we find that a fully covariant construction of the asymptotic solution for running non-relativistic theories necessitates an expansion in the eigenfunctions of two commuting operators instead of one. This provides a covariant but non-relativistic grading of the expansion, according to the number of time derivatives.

We study N=2 supergravity deformed by a genuine supersymmetric completion of the $λR^4$ term, using the underlying off shell N=2 superconformal framework. The gauge-fixed superconformal model has unbroken local supersymmetry of N=2 supergravity with higher derivative deformation. Elimination of auxiliary fields leads to the deformation of the supersymmetry rules as well as to the deformation of the action, which becomes a Born-Infeld with higher derivative type action. We find that the gravitino supersymmetry deformation starts from $λ\, \pa^4 {\cal F}^3$ and has higher graviphoton couplings. In the action there are terms $λ^2 \pa^8 {\cal F}^{6}$ and higher, in addition to original on shell counterterm deformation. These deformations are absent in the on shell superspace and in the candidate on shell counterterms of N=4,~8 supergravities, truncated down to N=2. We conclude therefore that the undeformed on shell superspace candidate counterterms break the N=2 part of local supersymmetry.

Lifshitz space-times with critical exponent z=2 can be obtained by dimensional reduction of Schroedinger space-times with critical exponent z=0. The latter space-times are asymptotically AdS solutions of AdS gravity coupled to an axion-dilaton system and can be uplifted to solutions of type IIB supergravity. This basic observation is used to perform holographic renormalization for 4-dimensional asymptotically z=2 locally Lifshitz space-times by Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction of the corresponding problem of holographic renormalization for 5-dimensional asymptotically locally AdS space-times coupled to an axion-dilaton system. We can thus define and characterize a 4-dimensional asymptotically locally z=2 Lifshitz space-time in terms of 5-dimensional AdS boundary data. In this setup the 4-dimensional structure of the Fefferman-Graham expansion and the structure of the counterterm action, including the scale anomaly, will be discussed. We find that for asymptotically locally z=2 Lifshitz space-times obtained in this way there are two anomalies each with their own associated nonzero central charge. Both anomalies follow from the Scherk--Schwarz dimensional reduction of the 5-dimensional conformal anomaly of AdS gravity coupled to an axion-dilaton system. Together they make up an action that is of the Horava-Lifshitz type with nonzero potential term for z=2 conformal gravity.

In this paper we continue the program of the classification of nilpotent orbits using the approach developed in arXiv:1107.5986, within the study of black hole solutions in D=4 supergravities. Our goal in this work is to classify static, single center black hole solutions to a specific N=2 four dimensional "magic" model, with special Kähler scalar manifold ${\rm Sp}(6,\mathbb{R})/{\rm U}(3)$, as orbits of geodesics on the pseudo-quaternionic manifold ${\rm F}_{4(4)}/[{\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R})\times {\rm Sp}(6,\mathbb{R})]$ with respect to the action of the isometry group ${\rm F}_{4(4)}$. Our analysis amounts to the classification of the orbits of the geodesic "velocity" vector with respect to the isotropy group $H^*={\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R})\times {\rm Sp}(6,\mathbb{R})$, which include a thorough classification of the \emph{nilpotent orbits} associated with extremal solutions and reveals a richer structure than the one predicted by the $β-γ$ labels alone, based on the Kostant Sekiguchi approach. We provide a general proof of the conjecture made in arXiv:0908.1742 which states that regular single center solutions belong to orbits with coinciding $β-γ$ labels. We also prove that the reverse is not true by finding distinct orbits with the same $β-γ$ labels, which are distinguished by suitably devised tensor classifiers. Only one of these is generated by regular solutions. Since regular static solutions only occur with nilpotent degree not exceeding 3, we only discuss representatives of these orbits in terms of black hole solutions. We prove that these representatives can be found in the form of a purely dilatonic four-charge solution (the generating solution in D=3) and this allows us to identify the orbit corresponding to the regular four-dimensional metrics.

For de Sitter worldvolumes this extends some recently constructed warped de Sitter non-compactifications. We restrict our analysis to solutions that possess scaling behavior and demonstrate that these scaling solutions are near-horizon limits of a more general solution. Finally, our framework can equally be used for spacelike branes and the uplift of the domain wall/cosmology correspondence becomes in this context a more general timelike/spacelike brane correspondence.

Abstract:
We present a simple embedding of a z=2 Lifshitz space-time into type IIB supergravity. This is obtained by considering a stack of D3-branes in type IIB supergravity and deforming the world-volume by a plane wave. The plane wave is sourced by the type IIB axion. The superposition of the plane wave and the D3-branes is 1/4 BPS. The near horizon geometry of this configuration is a 5-dimensional z=0 S…

The near horizon geometry of this configuration is a 5-dimensional z=0 Schroedinger space-time times a 5-sphere. This geometry is also 1/4 BPS. Upon compactification along the direction in which the wave is traveling the 5-dimensional z=0 Schroedinger space-time reduces to a 4-dimensional z=2 Lifshitz space-time. The compactification is such that the circle is small for weakly coupled type IIB string theory. This reduction breaks the supersymmetries. Further, we propose a general method to construct analytic z=2 Lifshitz black brane solutions. The method is based on deforming 5-dimensional AdS black strings by an axion wave and reducing to 4-dimensions. We illustrate this method with an example.

Abstract:
We review the status of the integrability and solvability of the geodesics equations of motion on symmetric coset spaces that appear as sigma models of supergravity theories when reduced over respectively the timelike and spacelike direction. Such geodesic curves describe respectively timelike and spacelike brane solutions. We emphasize the applications to black holes.

In this note we compare the geodesic formalism for spherically symmetric black hole solutions with the black hole effective potential approach. The geodesic formalism is beneficial for symmetric supergravity theories since the symmetries of the larger target space leads to a complete set of commuting constants of motion that establish the integrability of the geodesic equations of motion, as shown in arXiv:1007.3209. We point out that the integrability lifts straightforwardly to the integrability of the equations of motion with a black hole potential. This construction turns out to be a generalisation of the connection between Toda molecule equations and geodesic motion on symmetric spaces known in the mathematics literature. We describe in some detail how this generalisation of the Toda molecule equations arises.

Stationary black holes of massless supergravity theories are described by certain geodesic curves on the target space that is obtained after dimensional reduction over time. When the target space is a symmetric coset space we make use of the group-theoretical structure to prove that the second order geodesic equations are integrable in the sense of Liouville, by explicitly constructing the correct amount of Hamiltonians in involution. This implies that the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism can be applied, which proves that all such black hole solutions, including non-extremal solutions, possess a description in terms of a (fake) superpotential. Furthermore, we improve the existing integration method by the construction of a Lax integration algorithm that integrates the second order equations in one step instead of the usual two step procedure. We illustrate this technology with a specific example.

We prove that all stationary and spherical symmetric black hole solutions to theories with symmetric target spaces are integrable and we provide an explicit integration method. This exact integration is based on the description of black hole solutions as geodesic curves on the moduli space of the theory when reduced over the time-like direction. These geodesic equations of motion can be rewritten as a specific Lax pair equation for which mathematicians have provided the integration algorithms when the initial conditions are described by a diagonalizable Lax matrix. On the other hand, solutions described by nilpotent Lax matrices, which originate from extremal regular (small) D = 4 black holes can be obtained as suitable limits of solutions obtained in the diagonalizable case, as we show on the generating geodesic (i.e. most general geodesic modulo global symmetries of the D = 3 model) corresponding to regular (and small) D = 4 black holes. As a byproduct of our analysis we give the explicit form of the Wick rotation connecting the orbits of BPS and non-BPS solutions in maximally supersymmetric supergravity and its STU truncation.

Abstract:
We discuss the horizon structure for Born-Infeld black holes, in the context of Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity. We show that the entropy function formalism agrees with a direct calculation of the entropy. With the entropy function formalism we also obtain the entropy when an axion-dilaton system as well as gravitational derivative corrections are included.

We consider the geodesic motion on the symmetric moduli spaces that arise after timelike and spacelike reductions of supergravity theories. The geodesics correspond to timelike respectively spacelike $p$-brane solutions when they are lifted over a $p$-dimensional flat space. In particular, we consider the problem of constructing \emph{the minimal generating solution}: A geodesic with the minimal number of free parameters such that all other geodesics are generated through isometries. We give an intrinsic characterization of this solution in a wide class of orbits for various supergravities in different dimensions. We apply our method to three cases: (i) Einstein vacuum solutions, (ii) extreme and non-extreme D=4 black holes in N=8 supergravity and their relation to N=2 STU black holes and (iii) Euclidean wormholes in $D\geq 3$. In case (iii) we present an easy and general criterium for the existence of regular wormholes for a given scalar coset.

One-parameter solutions in supergravity carried by scalars and a metric trace out curves on the scalar manifold. In ungauged supergravity these curves describe a geodesic motion. It is known that a geodesic motion sometimes occurs in the presence of a scalar potential and for time-dependent solutions this can happen for scaling cosmologies. This note contains a further study of such solutions in the context of pseudo-supersymmetry for multi-field systems whose first-order equations we derive using a Bogomol'nyi-like method. In particular we show that scaling solutions that are pseudo-BPS must describe geodesic curves. Furthermore, we clarify how to solve the geodesic equations of motion when the scalar manifold is a maximally non-compact coset such as occurs in maximal supergravity. This relies upon a parametrization of the coset in the Borel gauge. We then illustrate this with the cosmological solutions of higher-dimensional gravity compactified on a $n$-torus.

We investigate the coset structures which appear in the dimensional reduction of supergravity theories.
