Authors:

Abstract:
We give a complete expansion, at any accuracy order, for the iterated convolution of a complex valued integrable sequence in one space dimension. The remainders are estimated sharply with generalized Gaussian bounds. The result applies in probability theory for random walks as well as in numerical analysis for studying the large time behavior of numerical schemes.

We compute the gravitational radiation-reaction force on a compact binary source at the fourth-and-a-half post-Newtonian (4.5PN) order of general relativity, i.e., 2PN order beyond the leading 2.5PN radiation reaction. The calculation is valid for general orbits in a general frame, but in a particular coordinate system which is an extension of the Burke-Thorne coordinate system at the lowest order. With the radiation-reaction acceleration, we derive (from first principles) the flux-balance laws associated with the energy, the angular and linear momenta, and the center-of-mass position, in a general frame and up to 4.5PN order. Restricting our attention to the frame of the center of mass, we point out that the equations of motion acquire a non-local-in-time contribution at the 4.5PN order, made of the integrated flux of linear momentum (responsible for the recoil of the source) together with the instantaneous flux of center-of-mass position. The non-local contribution was overlooked in the past literature, which assumed locality of the radiation-reaction force in the center of mass frame at 4.5PN order. We discuss the consequences of this non-local effect and obtain consistent non-local equations of motion and flux balance laws at 4.5PN order in the center-of-mass frame.

We propose an approach enriching Language Models such as RoBERTa with embeddings produced by triples (subject ; predicate ; object) extracted from the text sentences. Our analysis of the developmental data shows that this method improves the performance of Language Models alone. On the evaluation data, its best performance was in English, where it achieved an F1 score of 71.1 and ranked 12th out of 27 candidates. On the other languages (Dutch and Arabic), it obtained more mixed results. Future research tracks are identified toward adapting this processing pipeline to more recent Large Language Models.

This paper presents the HYBRINFOX method used to solve Task 2 of Subjectivity detection of the CLEF 2024 CheckThat! competition. The specificity of the method is to use a hybrid system, combining a RoBERTa model, fine-tuned for subjectivity detection, a frozen sentence-BERT (sBERT) model to capture semantics, and several scores calculated by the English version of the expert system VAGO, developed independently of this task to measure vagueness and subjectivity in texts based on the lexicon. In English, the HYBRINFOX method ranked 1st with a macro F1 score of 0.7442 on the evaluation data. For the other languages, the method used a translation step into English, producing more mixed results (ranking 1st in Multilingual and 2nd in Italian over the baseline, but under the baseline in Bulgarian, German, and Arabic). We explain the principles of our hybrid approach, and outline ways in which the method could be improved for other languages besides English.

Lett. 127, 151102 (2021)]. We compare these results and find excellent agreement for the total flux, showing consistency between the two calculations at all available PN and SF orders. However, although the total fluxes agree, we find disagreements in the fluxes due to individual spherical-harmonic modes of the waveform, strongly suggesting the two waveforms might be in different asymptotic frames.

This paper investigates the language of propaganda and its stylistic features. It presents the PPN dataset, standing for Propagandist Pseudo-News, a multisource, multilingual, multimodal dataset composed of news articles extracted from websites identified as propaganda sources by expert agencies. A limited sample from this set was randomly mixed with papers from the regular French press, and their URL masked, to conduct an annotation-experiment by humans, using 11 distinct labels. The results show that human annotators were able to reliably discriminate between the two types of press across each of the labels. We propose different NLP techniques to identify the cues used by the annotators, and to compare them with machine classification. They include the analyzer VAGO to measure discourse vagueness and subjectivity, a TF-IDF to serve as a baseline, and four different classifiers: two RoBERTa-based models, CATS using syntax, and one XGBoost combining syntactic and semantic features.

LISA, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, will usher in a new era in gravitational-wave astronomy. As the first anticipated space-based gravitational-wave detector, it will expand our view to the millihertz gravitational-wave sky, where a spectacular variety of interesting new sources abound: from millions of ultra-compact binaries in our Galaxy, to mergers of massive black holes at cosmological distances; from the beginnings of inspirals that will venture into the ground-based detectors' view to the death spiral of compact objects into massive black holes, and many sources in between. Central to realising LISA's discovery potential are waveform models, the theoretical and phenomenological predictions of the pattern of gravitational waves that these sources emit. This white paper is presented on behalf of the Waveform Working Group for the LISA Consortium. It provides a review of the current state of waveform models for LISA sources, and describes the significant challenges that must yet be overcome.

Moreover, we confirm by numerical experiment that asymptotic dynamics for general Riemann data is given in the hydrodynamic instability regime by either stable hydraulic shock waves, or a pattern consisting of an invading roll wave front separated by a finite terminating Lax shock from a constant state at plus infinity. Notably, profiles, and existence and stability diagrams are all rigorously obtained by mathematical analysis and explicit calculation.

This derivation involved challenging technical issues, due to the appearance of non-physical divergences, which have to be properly regularized, as well as effects of non-linear multipole interactions.

In this paper, we revisit the famous Kermack-McKendrick model with nonlocal spatial interactions by shedding new lights on associated spreading properties and we also prove the existence and uniqueness of traveling fronts. Unlike previous studies that have focused on integrated versions of the model for susceptible population, we analyze the long time dynamics of the underlying age-structured model for the cumulative density of infected individuals and derive precise asymptotic behavior for the infected population. Our approach consists in studying the long time dynamics of an associated transport equation with nonlocal spatial interactions whose spreading properties are close to those of classical Fisher-KPP reaction-diffusion equations. Our study is self-contained and relies on comparison arguments.

Sensory perception (e.g. vision) relies on a hierarchy of cortical areas, in which neural activity propagates in both directions, to convey information not only about sensory inputs but also about cognitive states, expectations and predictions. At the macroscopic scale, neurophysiological experiments have described the corresponding neural signals as both forward and backward-travelling waves, sometimes with characteristic oscillatory signatures. It remains unclear, however, how such activity patterns relate to specific functional properties of the perceptual apparatus. Here, we present a mathematical framework, inspired by neural network models of predictive coding, to systematically investigate neural dynamics in a hierarchical perceptual system. We show that stability of the system can be systematically derived from the values of hyper-parameters controlling the different signals (related to bottom-up inputs, top-down prediction and error correction). Similarly, it is possible to determine in which direction, and at what speed neural activity propagates in the system. Different neural assemblies (reflecting distinct eigenvectors of the connectivity matrices) can simultaneously and independently display different properties in terms of stability, propagation speed or direction. We also derive continuous-limit versions of the system, both in time and in neural space. Finally, we analyze the possible influence of transmission delays between layers, and reveal the emergence of oscillations at biologically plausible frequencies.

We then applied this algorithm at linear order and for specific quadratic interactions known as quadratic tail terms. In the present work, we extend this analysis to quadratic interactions associated with the coupling of two mass quadrupole moments, including both instantaneous and hereditary terms. Our main result is the derivation of the metric in Newman-Unti and Bondi gauges with complete quadrupole-quadrupole interactions. We rederive the displacement memory effect and provide expressions for all Bondi aspects and dressed Bondi aspects relevant to the study of leading and subleading memory effects. Then we obtain the Newman-Penrose charges, the BMS charges as well as the second and third order celestial charges defined from the known second order and novel third order dressed Bondi aspects for mass monopole-quadrupole and quadrupole-quadrupole interactions.

As a preparation, we also prove similar results for constant solutions of initial value and initial boundary value problems, that seem to be new in this generality. Main key technical ingredients include the design of a nonlinear change of variables providing a hypocoercive Kawashima-type structure with dissipative boundary conditions in the high-frequency regime and the explicit identification of most singular parts of the linearized evolution, both being deduced from the mere spectral assumption.

A by-product of our analysis also gives that the solutions approach the family of logarithmically shifted traveling front solutions with minimal wave speed $c_*$ uniformly on the positive integers, and that the solutions converge along their level sets to the minimal traveling front for large times.

As a crucial step towards the completion of the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) gravitational-wave generation from compact binary systems, we obtain the expressions of the so-called "canonical" multipole moments of the source in terms of the "source" and "gauge" moments. The canonical moments describe the propagation of gravitational waves outside the source's near zone, while the source and gauge moments encode explicit information about the matter source. Those two descriptions, in terms of two sets of canonical moments or in terms of six sets of source and gauge moments, are isometric. We thus construct the non-linear diffeomorphism between them up to the third post-Minkowskian order, and we exhibit the concrete expression of the canonical mass-type quadrupole moment at the 4PN order. This computation is one of the last missing pieces for the determination of the gravitational-wave phasing of compact binary systems at 4PN order.

The regularization and renormalization of the radiative mass-type quadrupole moment of inspiralling compact binaries (without spins) is investigated at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity. As clear from the conservative 4PN equations of motion, a dimensional regularization has to be implemented in order to properly treat the non-linear interactions experienced by gravitational waves during their propagation toward future null infinity. By implementing such procedure, we show that the poles coming from the source moment (computed in a companion paper) are exactly cancelled in the radiative moment, as expected for a physical quantity. We thus define and obtain a "renormalized" source quadrupole, three-dimensional by nature, which is an important step towards the computation of the gravitational-wave flux with 4PN accuracy. Furthermore, we explicitly prove the equivalence between the dimensional regularization and the previously used Hadamard partie finie scheme up to the 3PN order.

With the aim of providing high accuracy post-Newtonian (PN) templates for the analysis of gravitational waves generated by compact binary systems, we complete the analytical derivation of the source type mass quadrupole moment of compact binaries (without spins) at the fourth PN order of general relativity. Similarly to the case of the conservative 4PN equations of motion, we show that the quadrupole moment at that order contains a non-local (in time) contribution, arising from the tail-transported interaction entering the conservative part of the dynamics. Furthermore, we investigate the infra-red (IR) divergences of the quadrupole moment. In a previous work, this moment has been computed using a Hadamard partie finie procedure for the IR divergences, but the knowledge of the conservative equations of motion indicates that those divergences have to be dealt with by means of dimensional regularization. This work thus derives the difference between the two regularization schemes, which has to be added on top of the previous result. We show that unphysical IR poles start to appear at the 3PN order, and we determine all of these up to the 4PN order. In particular, the non-local tail term comes in along with a specific pole at the 4PN order. It will be proven in a companion paper that the poles in the source-type quadrupole are cancelled in the physical radiative type quadrupole moment measured at future null infinity.

We consider an epidemic model of SIR type set on a homogeneous tree and investigate the spreading properties of the epidemic as a function of the degree of the tree, the intrinsic basic reproduction number and the strength of the interactions within the population of infected individuals. When the degree is one, the homogeneous tree is nothing but the standard lattice on the integers and our model reduces to a SIR model with discrete diffusion for which the spreading properties are very similar to the continuous case. On the other hand, when the degree is larger than two, we observe some new features in the spreading properties. Most notably, there exists a critical value of the strength of interactions above which spreading of the epidemic in the tree is no longer possible.

The ultra-violet (UV) divergences due to the point-like nature of the source are treated by means of dimensional regularization. This entails generalizing the definition of the irreducible mass and current multipole moments of an isolated PN source in $d$ spatial dimensions. In particular, we find that the current type moment has the symmetry of a particular mixed Young tableau and that, in addition, there appears a third type of moment which is however inexistent in 3 spatial dimensions.

We determine the asymptotic spreading speed of the solutions of a Fisher-KPP reaction-diffusion equation, starting from compactly supported initial data, when the diffusion coefficient is a fixed bounded monotone profile that is shifted at a given forcing speed and satisfies a general uniform ellipticity condition. Depending on the monotony of the profile, we are able to characterize this spreading speed as a function of the forcing speed and the two linear spreading speeds associated to the asymptotic problems. Most notably, when the profile of the coefficient diffusion is increasing we show that there is an intermediate range for the forcing speed where spreading actually occurs at a speed which is larger than the linear speed associated with the homogeneous state around the position of the front. We complement our study with the construction of strictly monotone traveling front solutions with strong exponential decay near the unstable state when the profile of the coefficient diffusion is decreasing and in the regime where the forcing speed is precisely the selected spreading speed.

In this article, we consider a class of finite rank perturbations of Toeplitz operators that have simple eigenvalues on the unit circle. Under a suitable assumption on the behavior of the essential spectrum, we show that such operators are power bounded. The problem originates in the approximation of hyperbolic partial differential equations with boundary conditions by means of finite difference schemes. Our result gives a positive answer to a conjecture by Trefethen, Kreiss and Wu that only a weak form of the so-called Uniform Kreiss-Lopatinskii Condition is sufficient to imply power boundedness.

We transform the metric of an isolated matter source in the multipolar post-Minkowskian approximation from harmonic (de Donder) coordinates to radiative Newman-Unti (NU) coordinates. To linearized order, we obtain the NU metric as a functional of the mass and current multipole moments of the source, valid all-over the exterior region of the source. Imposing appropriate boundary conditions we recover the generalized Bondi-van der Burg-Metzner-Sachs residual symmetry group. To quadratic order, in the case of the mass-quadrupole interaction, we determine the contributions of gravitational-wave tails in the NU metric, and prove that the expansion of the metric in terms of the radius is regular to all orders. The mass and angular momentum aspects, as well as the Bondi shear, are read off from the metric. They are given by the radiative quadrupole moment including the tail terms.

We study the invasion of an unstable state by a propagating front in a peculiar but generic situation where the invasion process exhibits a remnant instability. Here, remnant instability refers to the fact that the spatially constant invaded state is linearly unstable in any exponentially weighted space in a frame moving with the linear invasion speed. Our main result is the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the selected invasion front for a prototypical model coupling spatio-temporal oscillations and monotone dynamics. We establish stability through a decomposition of the perturbation into two pieces: one that is bounded in the weighted space and a second that is unbounded in the weighted space but which converges uniformly to zero in the unweighted space at an exponential rate. Interestingly, long-time numerical simulations reveal an apparent instability in some cases. We exhibit how this instability is caused by round-off errors that introduce linear resonant coupling of otherwise non-resonant linear modes, and we determine the accelerated invasion speed.

We correct the choice of cut-off function in our construction of center manifolds in [G. Faye and A. Scheel, \textit{Trans. Amer. Math. Soc.}, 370 (2018), pp. 5843--5885]. The main result there establishes center manifolds for systems of nonlinear functional equations posed on the real line with nonlocal coupling through convolution operators. In the construction, we need to modify the nonlinearity such that it maps spaces of exponentially growing functions into itself and possesses a small Lipschitz constant. The cut-off function presented there is suitable for $L^\infty$-based construction but insufficient for the choice of $H^1$-spaces. We correct this choice and demonstrate the effect on a pointwise superposition nonlinearity.

We compute the gravitational-wave (GW) energy flux up to the next-to-next-to-leading (NNL) order of tidal effects in a spinless compact binary system on quasi-circular orbits. Starting from an effective matter action, we obtain the stress-energy tensor of the system, which we use in a GW generation formalism based on multipolar-post-Minkowskian (MPM) and post-Newtonian (PN) approximations. The tidal contributions to the multipole moments of the system are first obtained, from which we deduce the instantaneous GW energy flux to NNL order (formally 7PN order). We also include the remaining tidal contributions of GW tails to the leading (formally 6.5PN) and NL (7.5PN) orders. Combining it with our previous work on the conservative equations of motion (EoM) and associated energy, we get the GW phase and frequency evolution through the flux-balance equation to the same NNL order. These results extend and complete several preceding results in the literature.

The mass-type quadrupole moment of inspiralling compact binaries (without spins) is computed at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity. The multipole moments are defined by matching between the field in the exterior zone of the matter system and the PN field in the near zone, following the multipolar-post-Minkowskian (MPM)-PN formalism. The matching implies a specific regularization for handling infra-red (IR) divergences of the multipole moments at infinity, based on the Hadamard finite part procedure. On the other hand, the calculation entails ultra-violet (UV) divergences due to the modelling of compact objects by delta-functions, that are treated with dimensional regularization (DR). In future work we intend to systematically study the IR divergences by means of dimensional regularization as well. Our result constitutes an important step in the goal of obtaining the gravitational wave templates of inspiralling compact binary systems with 4PN/4.5PN accuracy.

We present the results from four stellar occultations by (486958) Arrokoth, the flyby target of the New Horizons extended mission. Three of the four efforts led to positive detections of the body, and all constrained the presence of rings and other debris, finding none. Twenty-five mobile stations were deployed for 2017 June 3 and augmented by fixed telescopes. There were no positive detections from this effort. The event on 2017 July 10 was observed by SOFIA with one very short chord. Twenty-four deployed stations on 2017 July 17 resulted in five chords that clearly showed a complicated shape consistent with a contact binary with rough dimensions of 20 by 30 km for the overall outline. A visible albedo of 10% was derived from these data. Twenty-two systems were deployed for the fourth event on 2018 Aug 4 and resulted in two chords. The combination of the occultation data and the flyby results provides a significant refinement of the rotation period, now estimated to be 15.9380 $\pm$ 0.0005 hours. The occultation data also provided high-precision astrometric constraints on the position of the object that were crucial for supporting the navigation for the New Horizons flyby. This work demonstrates an effective method for obtaining detailed size and shape information and probing for rings and dust on distant Kuiper Belt objects as well as being an important source of positional data that can aid in spacecraft navigation that is particularly useful for small and distant bodies.

As a first step in the computation of the orbital phase evolution of spinless compact binaries including tidal effects up to the next-to-next-to-leading (NNL) order, we obtain the equations of motion of those systems and the associated conserved integrals in harmonic coordinates. The internal structure and finite size effects of the compact objects are described by means of an effective Fokker-type action. Our results, complete to the NNL order, correspond to the second-post-Newtonian (2PN) approximation beyond the leading tidal effect itself, already occurring at the 5PN order. They are parametrized by three polarizability (or deformability) coefficients describing the mass quadrupolar, mass octupolar and current quadrupolar deformations of the objects through tidal interactions. Up to the next-to-leading (NL) order, we recover previous results in the literature; up to the NNL order for quasi-circular orbits, we confirm the known tidal effects in the (PN re-expansion of the) effective-one-body (EOB) Hamiltonian. In a future work, we shall derive the tidal contributions to the gravitational-wave flux up to the NNL order, which is the second step required to find the orbital phase evolution.

We revisit the problem of flux-balance equations for isolated post-Newtonian matter systems due to the emission of gravitational waves. In particular we show by a local derivation confined to the system, using the expression of radiation-reaction forces up to the 3.5PN order, that not only the energy, angular momentum and linear momentum of the system, but also the position of its center of mass, obey some (non-trivial) flux-balance equations. The balance equation for the center-of-mass position completes the description of the secular evolution by gravitational waves of relativistic post-Newtonian isolated matter systems. We then confirm this result by a direct computation of the gravitational-wave fluxes at future null infinity, obtaining the full multipole-moment expansion of the flux associated with the center-of-mass position (probably new with this paper), and rederiving as well the known multipole-moment expansions of the fluxes of energy, angular momentum and linear momentum. We also check our analysis by a direct calculation of radiation-reaction effects in the case of compact binary systems.

Neural field equations model population dynamics of large-scale networks of neurons. Wave propagation in neural fields is often studied by constructing traveling wave solutions in the wave coordinate frame. Nonequilibrium dynamics are more challenging to study, due to the nonlinearity and nonlocality of neural fields, whose interactions are described by the kernel of an integral term. Here, we leverage interface methods to describe the threshold of wave initiation away from equilibrium. In particular, we focus on traveling front initiation in an excitatory neural field. In a neural field with a Heaviside firing rate, neural activity can be described by the dynamics of the interfaces, where the neural activity is at the firing threshold. This allows us to derive conditions for the portion of the neural field that must be activated for traveling fronts to be initiated in a purely excitatory neural field. Explicit equations are possible for a single active (superthreshold) region, and special cases of multiple disconnected active regions. The dynamic spreading speed of the excited region can also be approximated asymptotically. We also discuss extensions to the problem of finding the critical spatiotemporal input needed to initiate waves.

We present the first complete (i.e., ambiguity-free) derivation of the equations of motion of two non-spinning compact objects up to the 4PN order, based on the Fokker action of point particles in harmonic coordinates. The last ambiguity parameter is determined from first principle, by resorting to a matching between the near zone and far zone fields, and a consistent computation of the 4PN tail effect in d dimensions. Dimensional regularization is used throughout for treating IR divergences appearing at 4PN order, as well as UV divergences due to the model of point particles describing compact objects.

We review our recent derivation of a Fokker action describing the conservative dynamics of a compact binary system at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity. The two bodies are modeled by point particles, which induces ultraviolet (UV) divergences that are cured by means of dimensional regularization combined with a renormalization of the particle's wordlines. Associated with the propagation of wave tails at infinity is the appearance of a non-local-in-time conservative tail effect at the 4PN order in the Lagrangian. In turn this implies the appearance of infrared (IR) divergent integrals which are also regularized by means of dimensional regularization. We compute the Noetherian conserved energy and periastron advance for circular orbits at 4PN order, paying special attention to the treatment of the non-local terms. One ambiguity parameter remaining in the current formalism is determined by comparing those quantities, expressed as functions of the orbital frequency, with self-force results valid in the small mass ratio limit.

We highlight some subtleties that affect naive implementations of quadrupolar and octupolar gravitational waveforms from numerically-integrated trajectories of three-body systems. Some of those subtleties arise from the requirement that the source be contained in its "coordinate near zone" when applying the standard PN formulae for gravitational-wave emission, and from the need to use the non-linear Einstein equations to correctly derive the quadrupole emission formula. We show that some of these subtleties were occasionally overlooked in the literature, with consequences for published results. We also provide prescriptions that lead to correct and robust predictions for the waveforms computed from numerically-integrated orbits.

The Fokker action of point-particle binaries at the fourth post-Newtonian (4PN) approximation of general relativity has been determined previously. However two ambiguity parameters associated with infra-red (IR) divergencies of spatial integrals had to be introduced. These two parameters were fixed by comparison with gravitational self-force (GSF) calculations of the conserved energy and periastron advance for circular orbits in the test-mass limit. In the present paper together with a companion paper, we determine both these ambiguities from first principle, by means of dimensional regularization. Our computation is thus entirely defined within the dimensional regularization scheme, for treating at once the IR and ultra-violet (UV) divergencies. In particular, we obtain crucial contributions coming from the Einstein-Hilbert part of the action and from the non-local tail term in arbitrary dimensions, which resolve the ambiguities.

We study invasion fronts and spreading speeds in two component reaction-diffusion systems. Using a variation of Lin's method, we construct traveling front solutions and show the existence of a bifurcation to locked fronts where both components invade at the same speed. Expansions of the wave speed as a function of the diffusion constant of one species are obtained. The bifurcation can be sub or super-critical depending on whether the locked fronts exist for parameter values above or below the bifurcation value. Interestingly, in the sub-critical case numerical simulations reveal that the spreading speed of the PDE system does not depend continuously on the coefficient of diffusion.

We establish center manifold theorems that allow one to study the bifurcation of small solutions from a trivial state in systems of functional equations posed on the real line. The class of equations includes most importantly nonlinear equations with nonlocal coupling through convolution operators as they arise in the description of spatially extended dynamics in neuroscience. These systems possess a natural spatial translation symmetry but local existence or uniqueness theorems for a spatial evolution associated with this spatial shift or even a well motivated choice of phase space for the induced dynamics do not seem to be available, due to the infinite range forward- and backward-coupling through nonlocal convolution operators. We perform a reduction relying entirely on functional analytic methods. Despite the nonlocal nature of the problem, we do recover a local differential equation describing the dynamics on the set of small bounded solutions, exploiting that the translation invariance of the original problem induces a flow action on the center manifold. We apply our reduction procedure to problems in mathematical neuroscience, illustrating in particular the new type of algebra necessary for the computation of Taylor jets of reduced vector fields.
