Quasicrystals are characterized by atomic arrangements possessing long-range order without periodicity. Van der Waals (vdW) bilayers provide a unique opportunity to controllably vary atomic alignment between two layers from a periodic moiré crystal to an aperiodic quasicrystal. Here, we reveal a remarkable consequence of the unique atomic arrangement in a dodecagonal WSe2 quasicrystal: the K and Q valleys in separate layers are brought arbitrarily close in momentum space via higher-order Umklapp scatterings. A modest perpendicular electric field is sufficient to induce strong interlayer K-Q hybridization, manifested as a new hybrid excitonic doublet. Concurrently, we observe the disappearance of the trion resonance and attribute it to quasicrystal potential driven localization. Our findings highlight the remarkable attribute of incommensurate systems to bring any pair of momenta into close proximity, thereby introducing a novel aspect to valley engineering.

Many fascinating properties discovered in graphene and transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) moiré superlattices originate from flat bands and enhanced many-body effects. Here, we discover new many-electron excited states in TMD homobilayers. As optical resonances evolve with twist angle and doping in MoSe$_2$ bilayers, a unique type of ``charge-transfer" trions is observed when gradual changes in atomic alignment between the layers occur. In real space, the optically excited electron-hole pair mostly resides in a different site from the doped hole in a moiré supercell. In momentum space, the electron-hole pair forms in the single-particle-band $K$-valley, while the hole occupies the $Γ$-valley. The rich internal structure of this trion resonance arises from the ultra-flatness of the first valence band and the distinct influence of moiré potential modulation on holes and excitons. Our findings open new routes to realizing photon-spin transduction or implementing moiré quantum simulators with independently tunable fermion and boson densities.

Modern graphics processing units (GPUs) provide an unprecedented level of computing power. In this study, we present a high-performance, multi-GPU implementation of the analytical nuclear gradient for Kohn-Sham time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), employing the Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA) and Gaussian-type atomic orbitals as basis functions. We discuss GPU-efficient algorithms for the derivatives of electron repulsion integrals and exchange-correlation functionals within the range-separated scheme. As an illustrative example, we calculated the TDA-TDDFT gradient of the S1 state of a full-scale green fluorescent protein with explicit water solvent molecules, totaling 4353 atoms, at the wB97X/def2-SVP level of theory. Our algorithm demonstrates favorable parallel efficiencies on a high-speed distributed system equipped with 256 Nvidia A100 GPUs, achieving >70% with up to 64 GPUs and 31% with 256 GPUs, effectively leveraging the capabilities of modern high-performance computing systems.

Semiconductor moiré systems, characterized by their periodic spatial light emission, unveil a new paradigm of active metasurfaces. Here, we show that ferroelectric moiré domains formed in a twisted hexagonal boron nitride (t-hBN) substrate can modulate light emission from an adjacent semiconductor MoSe$_2$ monolayer, enhancing its functionality as an active metasurface. The electrostatic potential at the surface of the t-hBN substrate provides a simple way to confine excitons in the MoSe$_2$ monolayer. The excitons confined within the domains and at the domain walls are spectrally separated due to a pronounced Stark shift. Moreover, the patterned light emission can be dynamically controlled by electrically gating the ferroelectric domains, introducing a novel functionality beyond conventional semiconductor moiré systems. Our findings chart an exciting pathway for integrating nanometer-scale moiré ferroelectric domains with various optically active functional layers, paving the way for advanced nanophotonic applications.

Metal thin films on soft polymers provide a unique opportunity for resistance-based strain sensors. A mechanical mismatch between the conductive film and the flexible substrate causes cracks to open and close, changing the electrical resistance as a function of strain. However, the very randomness of the formation, shape, length, orientation, and distance between adjacent cracks limits the sensing range as well as repeatability. Herein, we present a breakthrough: the Zerogap Strain Sensor, whereby lithography eliminates randomness and violent tearing process inherent in conventional crack sensors and allows for short periodicity between gaps with gentle sidewall contacts, critical in high strain sensing enabling operation over an unprecedently wide range. Our sensor achieves a gauge factor of over 15,000 at εext=18%, the highest known value. With the uniform gaps of three-to-ten thousand nanometer widths characterized by periodicity and strain, this approach has far reaching implications for future strain sensors whose range is limited only by that of the flexible substrate, with non-violent operations that always remain below the tensile limit of the metal.

The aim of this paper is to study the degenerate harmonic and degenerate higher-order harmonic numbers, which are respectively degenerate versions of the harmonic and higher-order harmonic numbers, in connection with the degenerate zeta and degenerate Hurwitz zeta function. The moiré potential of the superlattice, however, is fixed by the interlayer coupling of the stacked functional layers (e.g. graphene) and dependent on carrier types (e.g. electrons or holes) and valleys (e.g. Γ vs. K). In contrast, twisted hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layers are predicted to impose a periodic electrostatic potential that may be used to engineer the properties of an adjacent functional thin layer. Here, we show that this potential is described by a simple theory of electric polarization originating from the interfacial charge redistribution, validated by its dependence on supercell sizes and distance from the twisted interfaces. We demonstrate that the potential depth and profile can be further controlled by assembling a double moiré structure. When the twist angles are similar at the two interfaces, the potential is deepened by adding the potential from the two twisted interfaces, reaching ~ 400 meV. When the twist angles are dissimilar at the two interfaces, multi-level polarization states are observed. As an example of controlling a functional layer, we demonstrate how the electrostatic potential from a twisted hBN substrate impedes exciton diffusion in a semiconductor monolayer. These findings suggest exciting opportunities for engineering properties of an adjacent functional layer using the surface potential of a twisted hBN substrate.

The aim of this paper is to study the generalized degenerate (r, s)-Stirling numbers of the second and their natural extensions to polynomials, namely the generalized degenerate (r, s)-Bell polynomials, arising from certain degenerate boson normal ordering. We derive some properties, explicit expressions and generating functions for those numbers and polynomials. The generalized degenerate (r, s)-Stirling numbers of the second and the degenerate boson normal ordering are respectively degenerate versions of the generalized (r, s)-Stirling numbers of the second and the boson normal ordering studied earlier by Blasiak-Person-Solomon.

Recently, Freud-Rodriguez proposed a new counting process which is called the Bell-Touchard process and based on the Bell-Touchard probability distribution. This process was developed to solve the problem of rare events hypothesis which is one of the limitations of the Poisson process. In this paper, we consider the discrete degenerate Bell distributions and the degenerate Bell process which are 'degenerate versions' of the Bell-Touchard probability distributions and the Bell-Touchard process, respectively. We investigate several properties of the degenerate Bell distribution. We introduce the degenerate Bell process by giving two equivalent definitions and show one method of constructing a new infinite family of degenerate Bell process out of a given infinite family of degenerate Bell process.

Here, we demonstrate using that MLIPs and molecular dynamics can accurately capture the potential energy landscape and lattice dynamics that are needed to describe electron thermal diffuse scattering. Using SrTiO$_3$ as a test-bed at cryogenic and room temperatures, we compare electron thermal diffuse scattering simulations using different approximations to incorporate thermal motion. Only when the simulations are based on quantum mechanically accurate MLIPs in combination with path-integral molecular dynamics that include nuclear quantum effects, there is excellent agreement with experiment\end{abstract}

Widely used deep learning models are found to have poor robustness. Little noises can fool state-of-the-art models into making incorrect predictions. While there is a great deal of high-performance attack generation methods, most of them directly add perturbations to original data and measure them using L_p norms; this can break the major structure of data, thus, creating invalid attacks. In this paper, we propose a black-box attack, which, instead of modifying original data, modifies latent features of data extracted by an autoencoder; then, we measure noises in semantic space to protect the semantics of data. We trained autoencoders on MNIST and CIFAR-10 datasets and found optimal adversarial perturbations using a genetic algorithm. Our approach achieved a 100% attack success rate on the first 100 data of MNIST and CIFAR-10 datasets with less perturbation than FGSM.

It is challenging for a security analyst to detect or defend against cyber-attacks. Moreover, traditional defense deployment methods require the security analyst to manually enforce the defenses in the presence of uncertainties about the defense to deploy. As a result, it is essential to develop an automated and resilient defense deployment mechanism to thwart the new generation of attacks. In this paper, we propose a framework based on Markov Decision Process (MDP) and Q-learning to automatically generate optimal defense solutions for networked system states. The framework consists of four phases namely; the model initialization phase, model generation phase, Q-learning phase, and the conclusion phase. The proposed model collects real network information as inputs and then builds them into structural data. We implement a Q-learning process in the model to learn the quality of a defense action in a particular state. To investigate the feasibility of the proposed model, we perform simulation experiments and the result reveals that the model can reduce the risk of network systems from cyber attacks. Furthermore, the experiment shows that the model has shown a certain level of flexibility when different parameters are used for Q-learning.

Inductive transfer learning aims to learn from a small amount of training data for the target task by utilizing a pre-trained model from the source task. Most strategies that involve large-scale deep learning models adopt initialization with the pre-trained model and fine-tuning for the target task. However, when using over-parameterized models, we can often prune the model without sacrificing the accuracy of the source task. This motivates us to adopt model pruning for transfer learning with deep learning models. In this paper, we propose PAC-Net, a simple yet effective approach for transfer learning based on pruning. PAC-Net consists of three steps: Prune, Allocate, and Calibrate (PAC). The main idea behind these steps is to identify essential weights for the source task, fine-tune on the source task by updating the essential weights, and then calibrate on the target task by updating the remaining redundant weights. Under the various and extensive set of inductive transfer learning experiments, we show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance by a large margin.
