Discrete Morse theory on $ΩS^2$
Abstract: A classical result in Morse theory is the determination of the homotopy type of the loop space of a manifold. In this paper, we study this result through the lens of discrete Morse theory. This requires a suitable simplicial model for the loop space. Here, we use Milnor's $\textrm{F}^+\textrm{K}$ construction to model the loop space of the sphere $S^2$, describe a discrete gradient on it, and iden… ▽ More

Discrete Morse theory for open complexes
Abstract: We develop a discrete Morse theory for open simplicial complexes $K=X\setminus T$ where $X$ is a simplicial complex and $T$ a subcomplex of $X$. A discrete Morse function $f$ on $K$ gives rise to a discrete Morse function on the order complex $S_K$ of $K$, and the topology change determined by $f$ on $K$ can be understood by analyzing the the topology change determined by the discrete Morse functi… ▽ More

Assessing Cerebellar Disorders With Wearable Inertial Sensor Data Using Time-Frequency and Autoregressive Hidden Markov Model Approaches
Abstract: We use autoregressive hidden Markov models and a time-frequency approach to create meaningful quantitative descriptions of behavioral characteristics of cerebellar ataxias from wearable inertial sensor data gathered during movement. Wearable sensor data is relatively easily collected and provides direct measurements of movement that can be used to develop useful behavioral biomarkers. Sensitive an… ▽ More

Approximate triangulations of Grassmann manifolds
Abstract: We define the notion of an approximate triangulation for a manifold $M$ embedded in euclidean space. The basic idea is to build a nested family of simplicial complexes whose vertices lie in $M$ and use persistent homology to find a complex in the family whose homology agrees with that of $M$. Our key examples are various Grassmann manifolds $G_k({\mathbb R}^n)$.

Min-max theory for cell complexes
Abstract: In the study of smooth functions on manifolds, min-max theory provides a mechanism for identifying critical values of a function. In this paper we introduce a discretized version of this theory associated to a discrete Morse function on a (regular) cell complex. As applications we prove a discrete version of the Mountain Pass Lemma and give an alternate proof of a discrete Lusternik-Schnirelmann T… ▽ More

Measuring Congressional District Meandering
Abstract: In recent decades, state legislatures have often drawn U.S. Congressional voting districts that look---to the human eye---to be rather twisted. In this paper, we propose a method to measure how much districts "meander" via a computation of the medial axis of the region. We then compare this to the medial axis of the convex hull of the district to obtain the {\em medial-hull ratio}: a dimensionless… ▽ More

Discrete Stratified Morse Theory: Algorithms and A User's Guide
Abstract: Inspired by the works of Forman on discrete Morse theory, which is a combinatorial adaptation to cell complexes of classical Morse theory on manifolds, we introduce a discrete analogue of the stratified Morse theory of Goresky and MacPherson. Theoretical Geometry, Critical Theory, and Concept Spaces in IR
Abstract: We use the theory of persistent homology to analyze a data set arising from the study of various aspects of democracy. Our results show that most "mature" democracies look more or less the same, in the sense that they form a single connected component in the data set, while more authoritarian countries cluster into groups depending on various factors. For example, we find several distinct $2$-dime… ▽ More

One-bit compressive sensing with norm estimation
Abstract: Consider the recovery of an unknown signal ${x}$ from quantized linear measurements. In the one-bit compressive sensing setting, one typically assumes that ${x}$ is sparse, and that the measurements are of the form $\operatorname{sign}(\langle {a}_i, {x} \rangle) \in \{\pm1\}$. Since such measurements give no information on the norm of ${x}$, recovery methods from such measurements typically assum… ▽ More

Unknotting tunnels in hyperbolic 3-manifolds
Abstract: An unknotting tunnel in a 3-manifold with boundary is a properly embedded arc, the complement of an open neighborhood of which is a handlebody. A geodesic with endpoints on the cusp boundary of a hyperbolic 3-manifold and perpendicular to the cusp boundary is called a vertical geodesic. Given a vertical geodesic in a hyperbolic 3-manifold M, we find sufficient conditions for it to be an unknotting… ▽ More

Low dimensional homology of linear groups over Hensel local rings
Abstract: We prove that if R is a Hensel local ring with infinite residue field k, the natural map H_i(GL(n,R),Z/p) ---> H_i(GL(n,k),Z/p) is an isomorphism for i <=3, p distinct from char(k). This implies rigidity for H_i(GL_n), i <=3, which in turn implies the Friedlander-Milnor conjecture in positive characteristic in degrees <=3.
