Vortex matter in layered high-$T_c$ superconductors, including iron-pnictides, undergo several thermodynamic phase transitions due to the complex interplay of pinning energy, thermal energy and elastic energy. Moreover, the presence of anisotropy makes their vortex physics even more intriguing. Here, we report a detailed vortex dynamics study, using dc magnetization measurements, in a triclinic iron-pnictide superconductor (Ca$_{0.85}$La$_{0.15}$)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$)(Fe$_2$As$_2$)$_5$, with a superconducting transition temperature, T$_c$ $\sim$ 31 K. A second magnetization peak (SMP) feature is observed for magnetic field perpendicular ($H$$\parallel$$c$) and parallel ($H$$\parallel$$ab$) to the crystal plane. However, its fundamental origin is quite different in both directions. For $H$$\parallel$$c$, the SMP can be well explained using an elastic-to-plastic vortex creep crossover, using collective creep theory. In addition, a possible rhombic-to-square vortex lattice phase transition is also observed for fields in between the onset-field and peak-field related to the SMP. On the other hand, for $H$$\parallel$$ab$, a clear signature of an order-disorder vortex phase transition is observed in the isothermal $M$($H$) measurements at $T$ $\geq$ 6 K. The disordered phase exhibits the characteristics of entangled pinned vortex-liquid. We construct a comprehensive vortex phase diagram by displaying characteristic temperatures and magnetic fields for both crystal geometries in this unique superconducting compound. Our study sheds light on the intricate vortex dynamics and pinning in an iron-pnictide superconductor with triclinic symmetry.

We report the studies of detailed magnetic relaxation and isothermal magnetization measurements in the vortex state of the 112-type iron-pnictide Ca$_{0.82}$La$_{0.18}$Fe$_{0.96}$Ni$_{0.04}$As$_2$ superconductor with $T_c$ $\sim$ 22 K. In the isothermal $M(H)$, a well defined second magnetization peak (SMP) feature is observed in the entire temperature range below $T_c$ for measurements with $H$ $\parallel$ $c$-axis. However, for $H$ $\parallel$ $ab$-planes, the SMP feature is suppressed at low temperatures, which might be due to 2D Josephson vortices forming at low temperatures and high magnetic fields in such an anisotropic system. A rigorous analysis considering the magnetic relaxation data for $H$ $\parallel$ $c$-axis suggests an elastic to plastic pinning crossover across $H_p$, which also seems accompanied with a possible phase transition in vortex lattice near $H_p$. Moreover, point disorder and surface defects are likely to be the dominant sources of pinning, which contribute to the $δl$-type of pinning in the sample. A high $J_c$, in access of 10$^5$ A/cm$^2$ observed could potentially make this material technologically important.

The temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth $λ_{ab}$ of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals is determined directly from the shielding magnetic susceptibility, measured in the Meissner region with the field parallel to the ab layers. The doping levels studied cover the underdoped, optimally-doped and overdoped regimes. At temperatures below 0.5Tc a well-defined power-law behavior $λ_{ab}(T)-λ_{ab}(0)=AT^n$ (with n approximately 2.5) is observed. At lower temperatures (T<0.3Tc) the data are still consistent with n=2 and $A\propto T_c^{-3}$, as predicted by the strong pair-breaking scenario proposed by Gordon et al., Phys. Rev. B 81, 180501(R) (2010). The temperature dependence of the superfluid density $ρ_s\proptoλ_{ab}^{-2}$ presents a marked positive curvature just below Tc which is a sign of two-gap superconductivity. The analysis of $ρ_s(T)$ in terms of a two-gap model allowed to estimate parameters like the in-band and inter-band couplings, the relative weight of each band, and their dependence with the doping level. A comparison with $ρ_s(T)$ data obtained by using other techniques in compounds with a similar composition is also presented.

Here we extend this study to the finite field (or Prange) regime, in which the magnetic susceptibility is expected to be strongly dependent on the applied magnetic field. These measurements are analyzed in the framework of the three-dimensional anisotropic Ginzburg Landau (3D-aGL) approach generalized to the short wavelength regime through the introduction of a total-energy cutoff in the fluctuation spectrum. The results further confirm the adequacy of GL approaches to describe the fluctuation effects close to the superconducting transition of these materials.

The superconducting phase of the high-Tc cuprates has been thought to be described by a single d-wave pairing order parameter. Recently, there has been growing evidence suggesting that another form of order, possibly inherited from the pseudogap phase above Tc, may coexist with superconductivity in the underdoped regime. Through a combined study of scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we report the observation of two distinct gaps (a small-gap and a large-gap) that coexist both in real space and in the anti-nodal region of momentum space in the superconducting phase of Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+delta. We show that the small-gap is associated with superconductivity. The large-gap persists to temperatures above the transition temperature Tc and is found to be linked to short-range charge ordering. Remarkably, we find a strong, short-ranged correlation between the local small- and large- gap magnitudes suggesting that the superconductivity and charge ordering are affected by similar physical processes.

We have performed a systematic angle-resolved photoemission study of chemically substituted cuprates Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2-x}$Bi$_{x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$. We observed that the Fermi surface area shrinks linearly with Bi substitution content $x$, reflecting the electron doping nature of this chemical substitution. In addition, the spectral linewidth broadens rapidly with increasing $x$, and becomes completely incoherent at the superconducting-insulating boundary. The d-wave-like normal-state gap observed in the lightly underdoped region gradually evolves into a large soft gap, which suppresses antinodal spectral weight linearly in both the excitation energy and temperature. Combining with the bulk resistivity data obtained on the same samples, we establish the emergence of the Coulomb gap behavior in the very underdoped regime. Our results reveal the dual roles, doping and disorder, of off-plane chemical substitutions in high-$T_c$ cuprates and elucidate the nature of the quantum electronic states due to strong correlation and disorder.
