Group completions and the homotopical monadicity theorem
Abstract: We abstract and generalize homotopical monadicity statements, placing in a single conceptual framework a range of old and recent recognition and characterization principles in iterated loop space theory in classical, equivariant, and multiplicative frameworks. Some of the examples are new and some are old, but all are illuminated by the coherent framework, which we feel certain will encompass exam… ▽ More

Multiplicative equivariant $K$-theory and the Barratt-Priddy-Quillen theorem
Abstract: We prove a multiplicative version of the equivariant Barratt-Priddy-Quillen theorem, starting from the additive version proven in arXiv:1207.3459. The proof uses a multiplicative elaboration of an additive equivariant infinite loop space machine that manufactures orthogonal $G$-spectra from symmetric monoidal $G$-categories. The new machine produces highly structured associative ring and module… ▽ More

Operads, monoids, monads, and bar constructions
Abstract: We give a description of unital operads in a symmetric monoidal category as monoids in a monoidal category of unital $Λ$-sequences. This is a new variant of Kelly's old description of operads as monoids in the monoidal category of symmetric sequences. The monads associated to unital operads are the ones of interest in iterated loop space theory and factorization homology, among many other applicat… ▽ More

Symmetric monoidal G-categories and their strictification
Abstract: We give an operadic definition of a genuine symmetric monoidal G-category, and we prove that its classifying space is a genuine E_\infty G-space. We do this by developing some very general categorical coherence theory. We combine results of Corner and Gurski, Power, and Lack, to develop a strictification theory for pseudoalgebras over operads and monads. It specializes to strictify genuine symmetr… ▽ More

A symmetric monoidal and equivariant Segal infinite loop space machine
Abstract: In [MMO] (arXiv:1704.03413), we reworked and generalized equivariant infinite loop space theory, which shows how to construct $G$-spectra from $G$-spaces with suitable structure. In this paper, we construct a new variant of the equivariant Segal machine that starts from the category $\scr{F}$ of finite sets rather than from the category ${\scr{F}}_G$ of finite $G$-sets and which is equivalent to t… ▽ More

Equivariant infinite loop space theory, the space level story
Abstract: We rework and generalize equivariant infinite loop space theory, which shows how to construct $G$-spectra from $G$-spaces with suitable structure. There is a classical version which gives classical $Ω$-$G$-spectra for any topological group $G$, but our focus is on the construction of genuine $Ω$-$G$-spectra when $G$ is finite. We also show what is and is not true when $G$ is a compact Lie group.… ▽ More

The homotopy theory of equivariant posets
Abstract: Let $G$ be a discrete group. We prove that the category of $G$-posets admits a model structure that is Quillen equivalent to the standard model structure on $G$-spaces. As is already true nonequivariantly, the three classes of maps defining the model structure are not well understood calculationally. To illustrate, we exhibit some examples of cofibrant and fibrant posets and an example of a non-co… ▽ More

Six model structures for DG-modules over DGAs: Model category theory in homological action
Abstract: In Part 1, we describe six projective-type model structures on the category of differential graded modules over a differential graded algebra A over a commutative ring R. When R is a field, the six collapse to three and are well-known, at least to folklore, but in the general case the new relative and mixed model structures offer interesting alternatives to the model structures in common use. Enriched model categories in equivariant contexts
Abstract: We give a general framework of equivariant model category theory. Our groups G, called Hopf groups, are suitably defined group objects in any well-behaved symmetric monoidal category V. For any V, a discrete group G gives a Hopf group, denoted I[G]. When V is cartesian monoidal, the Hopf groups are just the group objects in V. When V is the category of modules over a commutative ring R, I[G] is th… ▽ More

Equivariant iterated loop space theory and permutative G-categories
Abstract: We set up operadic foundations for equivariant iterated loop space theory. We start by building up from a discussion of the approximation theorem and recognition principle for V-fold loop G-spaces to several avatars of a recognition principle for infinite loop G-spaces. We then explain what genuine permutative G-categories are and, more generally, what E_{\infty} G-categories are, giving examples… ▽ More

Enriched model categories and presheaf categories
Abstract: We collect in one place a variety of known and folklore results in enriched model category theory and add a few new twists. The central theme is a general procedure for constructing a Quillen adjunction, often a Quillen equivalence, between a given V-model category and a category of enriched presheaves in V, where V is any good enriching category. For example, we rederive the result of Schwede and… ▽ More

Abstract: We give a generalized version of the Freyd conjecture and a way to think about a possible proof. What are $E_{\infty}$ ring spaces good for?
Abstract: Infinite loop space theory, both additive and multiplicative, arose largely from two basic motivations. One was to solve calculational questions in geometric topology. The other was to better understand algebraic K-theory. The Adams conjecture is intrinsic to the first motivation, and Quillen's proof of that led directly to his original, calculationally accessible, definition of algebraic K-theo… ▽ More

What precisely are $E_{\infty}$ ring spaces and $E_{\infty}$ ring spectra?
Abstract: E infinity ring spectra were defined in 1972, but the term has since acquired several alternative meanings. The same is true of several related terms. The new formulations are not always known to be equivalent to the old ones and even when they are, the notion of "equivalence" needs discussion: Quillen equivalent categories can be quite seriously inequivalent. Part of the confusion stems from a… ▽ More

Isomorphisms between left and right adjoints
Abstract: There are many contexts in algebraic geometry, algebraic topology, and homological algebra where one encounters a functor that has both a left and right adjoint, with the right adjoint being isomorphic to a shift of the left adjoint specified by an appropriate ``dualizing object''. Typically the left adjoint is well understood while the right adjoint is more mysterious, and the result identifies… ▽ More
