The Deffuant-Weisbuch (DW) model is a well-known bounded-confidence opinion dynamics that has attracted wide interest. Although the heterogeneous DW model has been studied by simulations over $20$ years, its convergence proof is open. Our previous paper \cite{GC-WS-WM-FB:20} solves the problem for the case of uniform weighting factors greater than or equal to $1/2$, but the general case remains unresolved.
This paper considers the DW model with heterogeneous confidence bounds and heterogeneous (unconstrained) weighting factors and shows that, with probability one, the opinion of each agent converges to a fixed vector. In other words, this paper resolves the convergence conjecture for the heterogeneous DW model. Our analysis also clarifies how the convergence speed may be arbitrarily slow under certain parameter conditions.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) and movable antenna (MA)/fluid antenna (FA) techniques have both received increasing attention in the realm of wireless communications due to their ability to reconfigure and improve wireless channel conditions. In this paper, we investigate the integration of MAs/FAs into an IRS-assisted wireless communication system. In particular, we consider the downlink transmission from a multi-MA base station (BS) to a single-antenna user with the aid of an IRS, aiming to maximize the user's received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), by jointly optimizing the BS/IRS active/passive beamforming and the MAs' positions. Due to the similar capability of MAs and IRS for channel reconfiguration, we first conduct theoretical analyses of the performance gain of MAs over conventional fixed-position antennas (FPAs) under the line-of-sight (LoS) BS-IRS channel and derive the conditions under which the performance gain becomes more or less significant. Next, to solve the received SNR maximization problem, we propose an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm that decomposes it into two subproblems and solve them alternately. Numerical results are provided to validate our analytical results and evaluate the performance gains of MAs over FPAs under different setups.

Movable antennas (MAs) have received increasing attention in wireless communications due to their capability of antenna position adjustment to reconfigure wireless channels. However, moving MAs results in non-negligible delay, which may decrease the effective data transmission time. To reduce the movement delay, we study in this paper a new MA trajectory optimization problem. In particular, given the desired destination positions of multiple MAs, we aim to jointly optimize their associations with the initial MA positions and the trajectories for moving them from their respective initial to destination positions within a given two-dimensional (2D) region, such that the delay of antenna movement is minimized, subject to the inter-MA minimum distance constraints in the movement. However, this problem is a continuous-time mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem that is challenging to solve. To tackle this challenge, we propose a two-stage optimization framework that sequentially optimizes the MAs' position associations and trajectories, respectively. First, we relax the inter-MA distance constraints and optimally solve the resulted delay minimization problem. Next, we check if the obtained MA association and trajectory solutions satisfy the inter-MA distance constraints. If not satisfied, we then employ a successive convex approximation (SCA) algorithm to adjust the MAs' trajectories until they satisfy the given constraints. Simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of our proposed trajectory optimization method in reducing the movement delay as well as draw useful insights.

Fluid antennas (FAs) and mobile antennas (MAs) are innovative technologies in wireless communications that are able to proactively improve channel conditions by dynamically adjusting the transmit/receive antenna positions within a given spatial region. In this paper, we investigate an MA-enhanced multiple-input single-output (MISO) secure communication system, aiming to maximize the secrecy rate by jointly optimizing the positions of multiple MAs. Instead of continuously searching for the optimal MA positions as in prior works, we propose to discretize the transmit region into multiple sampling points, thereby converting the continuous antenna position optimization into a discrete sampling point selection problem. However, this point selection problem is combinatory and thus difficult to be optimally solved. To tackle this challenge, we ingeniously transform this combinatory problem into a recursive path selection problem in graph theory and propose a partial enumeration algorithm to obtain its optimal solution without the need for high-complexity exhaustive search. To further reduce the complexity, a linear-time sequential update algorithm is also proposed to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution. Numerical results show that our proposed algorithms yield much higher secrecy rates as compared to the conventional FPA and other baseline schemes.

The movable antenna (MA) technology has attracted increasing attention in wireless communications due to its capability for flexibly adjusting the positions of multiple antennas in a local region to reconfigure channel conditions. In this paper, we investigate its application in an amplify-and-forward (AF) relay system, where a multi-MA AF relay is deployed to assist in the wireless communications from a source to a destination. In particular, we aim to maximize the achievable rate at the destination, by jointly optimizing the AF weight matrix at the relay and its MAs' positions in two stages for receiving the signal from the source and transmitting its amplified version to the destination, respectively. However, compared to the existing one-stage antenna position optimization, the two-stage position optimization is more challenging due to its intricate coupling in the achievable rate at the destination. To tackle this challenge, we decompose the considered problem into several subproblems by invoking the alternating optimization (AO) and solve them by using the semidefinite programming and the gradient ascent. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed system over the conventional relaying system with fixed-position antennas (FPAs) and also drive essential insights.

The Friedkin-Johnsen (FJ) model introduces prejudice into the opinion evolution and has been successfully validated in many practical scenarios; however, due to its weighted average mechanism, only one prejudiced agent can always guide all unprejudiced agents synchronizing to its prejudice under the connected influence network, which may not be in line with some social realities. To fundamentally address the limitation of the weighted average mechanism, a weighted-median opinion dynamics has been recently proposed; however, its theoretical analysis is challenging due to its nonlinear nature. This paper studies the weighted-median opinion dynamics with prejudice, and obtains the convergence and convergence rate when all agents have prejudice, and a necessary and sufficient condition for asymptotic consensus when a portion of agents have prejudice. These results are the first time to analyze the discrete-time and synchronous opinion dynamics with the weighted median mechanism, and address the phenomenon of the FJ model that connectivity leads to consensus when a few agents with the same prejudice join in an unprejudiced group.

Fluid antennas (FAs) and movable antennas (MAs) have attracted increasing attention in wireless communications recently. As compared to the conventional fixed-position antennas (FPAs), their geometry can be dynamically reconfigured, such that more flexible beamforming can be achieved for signal coverage and/or interference nulling. In this paper, we investigate the use of MAs to achieve uniform coverage for multiple regions with arbitrary number and width in the spatial domain. In particular, we aim to jointly optimize the MAs weights and positions within a linear array to maximize the minimum beam gain over the desired spatial regions. However, the resulting problem is non-convex and difficult to be optimally solved. To tackle this difficulty, we propose an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution, where the MAs weights and positions are alternately optimized by applying successive convex approximation (SCA) technique. Numerical results show that our proposed MAbased beam coverage scheme can achieve much better performance than conventional FPAs.

However, previous research has primarily focused on characterizing the performance limits of various MA-assisted wireless communication systems, with less emphasis on their practical implementation. Additionally, we draw from fields such as antenna design and mechanical control to provide an overview of candidate implementation methods for the proposed MA architectures, utilizing either direct mechanical or equivalent electronic control. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems may face a heavy computation burden since the sensory data needs to be further processed. This paper studies a novel system that integrates sensing, communication, and computation, aiming to provide services for different objectives efficiently. This system consists of a multi-antenna multi-functional base station (BS), an edge server, a target, and multiple singleantenna communication users. The BS needs to allocate the available resources to efficiently provide sensing, communication, and computation services. Due to the heavy service burden and limited power budget, the BS can partially offload the tasks to the nearby edge server instead of computing them locally. We consider the estimation of the target response matrix, a general problem in radar sensing, and utilize Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) as the corresponding performance metric. To tackle the non-convex optimization problem, we propose both semidefinite relaxation (SDR)-based alternating optimization and SDR-based successive convex approximation (SCA) algorithms to minimize the CRB of radar sensing while meeting the requirement of communication users and the need for task computing. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the optimal rankone solutions of both the alternating and SCA algorithms can be directly obtained via the solver or further constructed even when dealing with multiple functionalities. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can provide higher target estimation performance than state-of-the-art benchmarks while satisfying the communication and computation constraints.

Fluid antennas (FAs) and movable antennas (MAs) have drawn increasing attention in wireless communications recently due to their ability to create favorable channel conditions via local antenna movement within a confined region. In this letter, we advance their application for cognitive radio to facilitate efficient spectrum sharing between primary and secondary communication systems. In particular, we aim to jointly optimize the transmit beamforming and MA positions at a secondary transmitter (ST) to maximize the received signal power at a secondary receiver (SR) subject to the constraints on its imposed co-channel interference power with multiple primary receivers (PRs). However, such an optimization problem is difficult to be optimally solved due to the highly nonlinear functions of the received signal/interference power at the SR/all PRs in terms of the MA positions. To drive useful insights, we first perform theoretical analyses to unveil MAs' capability to achieve maximum-ratio transmission with the SR and effective interference mitigation for all PRs at the same time. To solve the MA position optimization problem, we propose an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed algorithms can significantly outperform the conventional fixed-position antennas (FPAs) and other baseline schemes.

In this paper, we study an IRS-assisted coverage enhancement problem for a given region, aiming to optimize the passive reflection of the IRS for improving the average communication performance in the region by accounting for both deterministic and random channels in the environment. To this end, we first derive the closed-form expression of the average received signal power in terms of the deterministic base station (BS)-IRS-user cascaded channels over all user locations, and propose an IRS-aided coverage enhancement framework to facilitate the estimation of such deterministic channels for IRS passive reflection design. Specifically, to avoid the exorbitant overhead of estimating the cascaded channels at all possible user locations, a location selection method is first proposed to select only a set of typical user locations for channel estimation by exploiting the channel spatial correlation in the region. To estimate the deterministic cascaded channels at the selected user locations, conventional IRS channel estimation methods require additional pilot signals, which not only results in high system training overhead but also may not be compatible with the existing communication protocols. To overcome this issue, we further propose a single-layer neural network (NN)-enabled IRS channel estimation method in this paper, based on only the average received signal power measurements at each selected location corresponding to different IRS random training reflections, which can be offline implemented in current wireless systems. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed scheme can significantly improve the coverage performance of the target region and outperform the existing power-measurement-based IRS reflection designs.

Opinion dynamics models are important in understanding and predicting opinion formation processes within social groups. Although the weighted-averaging opinion-update mechanism is widely adopted as the micro-foundation of opinion dynamics, it bears a non-negligibly unrealistic implication: opinion attractiveness increases with opinion distance. Recently, the weighted-median mechanism has been proposed as a new microscopic mechanism of opinion exchange. Numerous advancements have been achieved regarding this new micro-foundation, from theoretical analysis to empirical validation, in a discrete-time asynchronous setup. However, the original discrete-time weighted-median model does not allow for "compromise behavior" in opinion exchanges, i.e., no intermediate opinions are created between disagreeing agents. To resolve this problem, this paper propose a novel continuous-time weighted-median opinion dynamics model, in which agents' opinions move towards the weighted-medians of their out-neighbors' opinions. It turns out that the proof methods for the original discrete-time asynchronous model are no longer applicable to the analysis of the continuous-time model. In this paper, we first establish the existence and uniqueness of the solution to the continuous-time weighted-median opinion dynamics by showing that the weighted-median mapping is contractive on any graph. We also characterize the set of all the equilibria. Then, by leveraging a new LaSalle invariance principle argument, we prove the convergence of the continuous-time weighted-median model for any initial condition and derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the convergence to consensus.

However, current works on OIRS predominantly assume known channel state information (CSI), which is essential to practical OIRS configuration. To bridge such a gap, this paper proposes a new and customized channel estimation protocol for OIRSs under the alignment-based channel model. Specifically, we first unveil OIRS spatial and temporal coherence characteristics and derive the coherence distance and the coherence time in closed form. Next, to achieve fast beam alignment over different coherence time, we propose to dynamically tune the rotational angles of the OIRS reflecting elements following a geometric optics-based non-uniform codebook. Given the above beam alignment, we propose an efficient joint space-time sampling-based algorithm to estimate the OIRS channel. In particular, we divide the OIRS into multiple subarrays based on the coherence distance and sequentially estimate their associated CSI, followed by a spacetime interpolation to retrieve full CSI for other non-aligned transceiver antennas. Numerical results validate our theoretical analyses and demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed OIRS channel estimation scheme as compared to other benchmark schemes.

However, a "DISCO" reconfigurable intelligent surface (DRIS), i.e., an illegitimate RIS with random, time-varying reflection properties that acts like a "disco ball," introduces a paradigm shift that enables active channel aging more rapidly during the channel coherence time. In this letter, we investigate the impact of DISCO jamming attacks launched by a DRISbased fully-passive jammer (FPJ) on an ISAC system. Specifically, an ISAC problem formulation and a corresponding waveform optimization are presented in which the ISAC waveform design considers the trade-off between the S&C performance and is formulated as a Pareto optimization problem. Moreover, a theoretical analysis is conducted to quantify the impact of DISCO jamming attacks. Fluid antennas (FAs) and movable antennas (MAs) have emerged as promising technologies in wireless communications, which offer the flexibility to improve channel conditions by adjusting transmit/receive antenna positions within a spatial region. In this letter, we focus on an MA-enhanced multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system, aiming to optimize the positions of multiple transmit MAs to maximize the received signal power. Unlike the prior works on continuously searching for the optimal MA positions, we propose to sample the transmit region into discrete points, such that the continuous antenna position optimization problem is transformed to a discrete sampling point selection problem based on the point-wise channel information. However, such a point selection problem is combinatory and challenging to be optimally solved. To tackle this challenge, we ingeniously recast it as an equivalent fixed-hop shortest path problem in graph theory and propose a customized algorithm to solve it optimally in polynomial time. To further reduce the complexity, a linear-time sequential update algorithm is also proposed to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution. RaF is found to have a comparable photon-scattering rate to homoelectronic laser-coolable molecules. Thanks to its highly diagonal Franck-Condon matrix, it is expected to scatter an order of magnitude more photons than other molecules when using just 3 cooling lasers, before it decays to a dark state. System identification through learning approaches is emerging as a promising strategy for understanding and simulating dynamical systems, which nevertheless faces considerable difficulty when confronted with power systems modeled by differential-algebraic equations (DAEs). This paper introduces a neural network (NN) framework for effectively learning and simulating solution trajectories of DAEs. The proposed framework leverages the synergy between Implicit Runge-Kutta (IRK) time-stepping schemes tailored for DAEs and NNs (including a differential NN (DNN)). The framework enforces an NN to cooperate with the algebraic equation of DAEs as hard constraints and is suitable for the identification of the ordinary differential equation (ODE)-modeled dynamic equation of DAEs using an existing penalty-based algorithm. Finally, the paper demonstrates the efficacy and precision of the proposed NN through the identification and simulation of solution trajectories for the considered DAE-modeled power system.

Both passive and active intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) can be deployed in complex environments to enhance wireless network coverage by creating multiple blockage-free cascaded line-of-sight (LoS) links. In this paper, we study a multi-passive/active-IRS (PIRS/AIRS) aided wireless network with a multi-antenna base station (BS) in a given region. First, we divide the region into multiple non-overlapping cells, each of which may contain one candidate location that can be deployed with a single PIRS or AIRS. Then, we show several trade-offs between minimizing the total IRS deployment cost and enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance over all cells via direct/cascaded LoS transmission with the BS. To reconcile these trade-offs, we formulate a joint multi-PIRS/AIRS deployment problem to select an optimal subset of all candidate locations for deploying IRS and also optimize the number of passive/active reflecting elements deployed at each selected location to satisfy a given SNR target over all cells, such that the total deployment cost is minimized. However, due to the combinatorial optimization involved, the formulated problem is difficult to be solved optimally. To tackle this difficulty, we first optimize the reflecting element numbers with given PIRS/AIRS deployed locations via sequential refinement, followed by a partial enumeration to determine the PIRS/AIRS locations. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm achieves better cost-performance trade-offs than other baseline deployment strategies.

One main challenge for implementing intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided communications lies in the difficulty to obtain the channel knowledge for the base station (BS)-IRS-user cascaded links, which is needed to design high-performance IRS reflection in practice. Traditional methods for estimating IRS cascaded channels are usually based on the additional pilot signals received at the BS/users, which increase the system training overhead and also may not be compatible with the current communication protocols. To tackle this challenge, we propose in this paper a new single-layer neural network (NN)-enabled IRS channel estimation method based on only the knowledge of users' individual received signal power measurements corresponding to different IRS random training reflections, which are easily accessible in current wireless systems. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed channel estimation method, we design the IRS reflection for data transmission based on the estimated cascaded channels in an IRS-aided multiuser communication system. Numerical results show that the proposed IRS channel estimation and reflection design can significantly improve the minimum received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) among all users, as compared to existing power measurement based designs.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) can be densely deployed in complex environments to create cascaded line-of-sight (LoS) links between base stations (BSs) and users, which significantly enhance the signal coverage. In this paper, we consider the wireless power transfer (WPT) from a multi-antenna BS to multiple energy users (EUs) by exploiting the signal beam routing via multi-IRS reflections. First, we present a baseline beam routing scheme with each IRS serving at most one EU, where the BS transmits wireless power to all EUs simultaneously while the signals to different EUs undergo disjoint sets of multi-IRS reflection paths. Under this setup, we aim to tackle the joint beam routing and resource allocation optimization problem by jointly optimizing the reflection paths for all EUs, the active/passive beamforming at the BS/each involved IRS, as well as the BS's power allocation for different EUs to maximize the minimum received signal power among all EUs. Next, to further improve the WPT performance, we propose two new beam routing schemes, namely dynamic beam routing and subsurface-based beam routing, where each IRS can serve multiple EUs via different time slots and different subsurfaces, respectively. In particular, we prove that dynamic beam routing outperforms subsurface-based beam routing in terms of minimum harvested power among all EUs. In addition, we show that the optimal performance of dynamic beam routing is achieved by assigning all EUs with orthogonal time slots for WPT. A clique-based optimization approach is also proposed to solve the joint beam routing and resource allocation problems for the baseline beam routing and proposed dynamic beam routing schemes. Numerical results are finally presented, which demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed dynamic beam routing scheme to the baseline scheme.

The stable cooperation ratio of spatial evolutionary games has been widely studied using simulations or approximate analysis methods. However, sometimes such ``stable'' cooperation ratios obtained via approximate methods might not be actually stable, but correspond to quasi-equilibriums instead. We find that various classic game models, like the evolutionary snowdrift game, evolutionary prisoner's dilemma, and spatial public goods game on square lattices and scale-free networks, exhibit the phase transition in convergence time to the equilibrium state. Moreover, mathematical principles are provided to explain the phase transition of convergence time and quasi-equilibrium of cooperation ratio. The findings explain why and when cooperation and defection have a long-term coexistence.

We report a detailed study of the magnetic properties of KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$, in which magnetic Gd$^{3+}$ ($S=7/2$) ions form into two-dimensional triangular layers. Magnetization, specific heat and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) measurements have been performed on KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$ single crystals. The results show that a long-range antiferromagnetic state is established below $T_{\rm N}=0.24$ K. In zero fields, only about half of the full entropy is released at $T_{\rm N}$, indicating that not all the magnetic moments are frozen below the ordering temperature, as expected from the geometrical frustration of the triangular spin lattice. Further studies under external fields were performed down to 50 mK, and the magnetic phase diagrams are established with magnetic fields applied both within and perpendicular to the triangular plane. KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$ serves as an example of a two-dimensional triangular lattice with large spin values ($S=7/2$) and can be directly compared with the iso-structure KBaR(BO$_3$)$_2$ (R = Dy-Yb) family of doublet ground states, which exhibit effective spins of $S=1/2$.

Instead of a quantum spin liquid ground state, an antiferromagnetically ordered state is found below $T_{\mathrm{N}}=0.52~\rm K$. With applying field in the [111] direction, the antiferromagnetic order is suppressed at the critical field of $B_{\mathrm{c}}=0.75~\rm T$, and enhancement of the critical fluctuations with linear crossover behaviors is observed near the critical point.

In this report, we investigated a new rare earth based one-dimensional Ising spin chain magnet~\DNG~by means of magnetization, specific heat and powder neutron diffraction measurements. Due to the crystalline electrical field splitting, the magnetic Dy ions share an Ising like ground doublet state. Owning to the local point symmetry, these Ising moments form into two canted magnetic sublattices, which were further confirmed by the angle-dependent magnetization measurement. In zero fields, two successive antiferromagnetic phase transitions were found at temperatures $T_{\mathrm{N1}}=6~\rm K$ and $T_{\mathrm{N2}}=5~\rm K$, respectively. Only part of the moments are statically ordered in this intermediate state between $T_{\mathrm{N1}}$ and $T_{\mathrm{N2}}$. Powder neutron diffraction experiments at different temperatures were performed as well. An incommensurate magnetic propagation vector of $\mathbf{k_{\rm m}}=(0.5,0.4,0.5)$ was identified. The refined spin configurations through the irreducible representation analysis confirmed that these Ising spins are canted in the crystal $ab$~plane.

Although the multi-antenna or so-called multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission has been the enabling technology for the past generations of radio-frequency (RF)-based wireless communication systems, its application to the visible light communication (VLC) still faces a critical challenge as the MIMO spatial multiplexing gain can be hardly attained in VLC channels due to their strong spatial correlation. In this paper, we tackle this problem by deploying the optical intelligent reflecting surface (OIRS) in the environment to boost the capacity of MIMO VLC. Firstly, based on the extremely near-field channel condition in VLC, we propose a new channel model for OIRS-assisted MIMO VLC and reveal its peculiar ``no crosstalk'' property, where the OIRS reflecting elements can be respectively configured to align with one pair of transmitter and receiver antennas without causing crosstalk to each other. Next, we characterize the OIRS-assisted MIMO VLC capacities under different practical power constraints and then proceed to maximize them by jointly optimizing the OIRS element alignment and transmitter emission power. In particular, for optimizing the OIRS element alignment, we propose two algorithms, namely, location-aided interior-point algorithm and log-det-based alternating optimization algorithm, to balance the performance versus complexity trade-off; while the optimal transmitter emission power is derived in closed form. Numerical results are provided, which validate the capacity improvement of OIRS-assisted MIMO VLC against the VLC without OIRS and demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed algorithms compared to baseline schemes.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been widely recognized as an efficient technique to reconfigure the electromagnetic environment in favor of wireless communication performance. In this paper, we propose a new application of IRS for device-free target sensing via joint location and orientation estimation. In particular, different from the existing works that use IRS as an additional anchor node for localization/sensing, we consider mounting IRS on the sensing target, whereby estimating the IRS's location and orientation as that of the target by leveraging IRS's controllable signal reflection. To this end, we first propose a tensor-based method to acquire essential angle information between the IRS and the sensing transmitter as well as a set of distributed sensing receivers. Next, based on the estimated angle information, we formulate two optimization problems to estimate the location and orientation of the IRS/target, respectively, and obtain the locally optimal solutions to them by invoking two iterative algorithms, namely, gradient descent method and manifold optimization. In particular, we show that the orientation estimation problem admits a closed-form solution in a special case that usually holds in practice. Furthermore, theoretical analysis is conducted to draw essential insights into the proposed sensing system design and performance. Simulation results verify our theoretical analysis and demonstrate that the proposed methods can achieve high estimation accuracy which is close to the theoretical bound.

Mechanistic and tractable mathematical models play a key role in understanding how social influence shapes public opinions. Recently, a weighted-median mechanism has been proposed as a new micro-foundation of opinion dynamics and validated via experimental data. Numerical studies also indicate that this new mechanism recreates some non-trivial real-world features of opinion evolution. In this paper, we conduct a thorough theoretical analysis of the weighted-median opinion dynamics. We fully characterize the set of all equilibria, and we establish the almost-sure finite-time convergence for any initial condition. Moreover, we prove a necessary and sufficient graph-theoretic condition for the almost-sure convergence to consensus, as well as a sufficient graph-theoretic condition for almost-sure persistent dissensus. It turns out that the weighted-median opinion dynamics, despite its simplicity in form, exhibit rich dynamical behavior that depends on some delicate network structures. To complement our sufficient conditions for almost-sure dissensus, we further prove that, given the influence network, determining whether the system almost surely achieves persistent dissensus is NP-hard, which reflects the complexity the network topology contributes to opinion evolution.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) can be densely deployed in complex environment to create cascaded line-of-sight (LoS) paths between multiple base stations (BSs) and users via tunable IRS reflections, thereby significantly enhancing the coverage performance of wireless networks. To achieve this goal, it is vital to optimize the deployed locations of BSs and IRSs in the wireless network, which is investigated in this paper. Specifically, we divide the coverage area of the network into multiple non-overlapping cells and decide whether to deploy a BS/IRS in each cell given a total number of BSs/IRSs available. We show that to ensure the network coverage/communication performance, i.e., each cell has a direct/cascaded LoS path with at least one BS, as well as such LoS paths have the average number of IRS reflections less than a given threshold, there is a fundamental trade-off with the deployment cost or the number of BSs/IRSs needed. To optimally characterize this trade-off, we formulate a joint BS and IRS deployment problem based on graph theory, which, however, is difficult to be optimally solved due to the combinatorial optimization involved. To circumvent this difficulty, we first consider a simplified problem with given BS deployment and propose the optimal as well as an efficient suboptimal IRS deployment solution to it, by applying the branch-and-bound method and iteratively removing IRSs from the candidate locations, respectively. Next, an efficient sequential update algorithm is proposed for solving the joint BS and IRS deployment problem. Numerical results are provided to show the efficacy of the proposed design approach and optimization algorithms for the joint BS and IRS deployment. The trade-off between the network coverage performance and the number of deployed BSs/IRSs with different cost ratios is also unveiled.

Object detection is one of the most significant aspects of computer vision, and it has achieved substantial results in a variety of domains. It is worth noting that there are few studies focusing on slender object detection. CNNs are widely employed in object detection, however it performs poorly on slender object detection due to the fixed geometric structure and sampling points. In comparison, Deformable DETR has the ability to obtain global to specific features. Even though it outperforms the CNNs in slender objects detection accuracy and efficiency, the results are still not satisfactory. Therefore, we propose Deformable Feature based Attention Mechanism (DFAM) to increase the slender object detection accuracy and efficiency of Deformable DETR. The DFAM has adaptive sampling points of deformable convolution and attention mechanism that aggregate information from the entire input sequence in the backbone network. This improved detector is named as Deformable Feature based Attention Mechanism DETR (DFAM- DETR). Results indicate that DFAM-DETR achieves outstanding detection performance on slender objects.

The interplay between itinerant electrons and local magnetic moments in quantum materials brings about rich and fascinating phenomena and stimulates various developments in the theoretical framework. In this work, thermodynamic, electric transport, and neutron diffraction measurements were performed on a newly synthesized honeycomb lattice magnet TmNi$_3$Al$_9$. Based on the experimental data, a magnetic field temperature phase diagram was constructed, exhibiting three essentially different magnetic regions. Below ${T_{\rm N}=2.97 \pm 0.02}\ \rm K$ Tm$^{3+}$ moments order antiferromagnetically in zero field. We found that the Tm$^{3+}$ ions form a pseudo-doublet ground state with the Ising-like moments lying normal to the two-dimensional honeycomb layers. Application of a magnetic field along the easy axis gradually suppresses the antiferromagnetic order in favor of an induced ferromagnetic state above the critical field ${B_c=0.92 \pm 0.05}\ \rm T$. In the vicinity of $B_c$, a strong enhancement of the quantum spin fluctuations was observed. The quantum Ising nature of the local moments and the coupling to itinerant electrons are discussed.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a promising technique to enhance wireless communication performance cost effectively. The existing literature has mainly considered IRS being deployed near user terminals to improve their performance. However, this approach may incur a high cost if IRSs need to be densely deployed in the network to cater to random user locations. To avoid such high deployment cost, in this paper we consider a new IRS aided wireless network architecture, where IRSs are deployed in the vicinity of each base station (BS) to assist in its communications with distributed users regardless of their locations. Besides significantly enhancing IRSs' signal coverage, this scheme helps reduce the IRS associated channel estimation overhead as compared to conventional user-side IRSs, by exploiting the nearly static BS-IRS channels over short distance. For this scheme, we propose a new two stage transmission protocol to achieve IRS channel estimation and reflection optimization for uplink data transmission efficiently. In addition, we propose effective methods for solving the user IRS association problem based on long term channel knowledge and the selected user IRS BS cascaded channel estimation problem. Finally, all IRSs' passive reflections are jointly optimized with the BS's multi-antenna receive combining to maximize the minimum achievable rate among all users for data transmission. Numerical results show that the proposed co site IRS empowered BS scheme can achieve significant performance gains over the conventional BS without co site IRS and existing schemes for IRS channel estimation and reflection optimization, thus enabling an appealing low cost and high performance BS design for future wireless networks.

Shubnikov-de Hass oscillations are directly observed in undoped antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4. With increasing magnetic fields, the oscillation period decreases gradually in the magnetic transition from canted antiferromagnetism to ferromagnetism and then saturates in high magnetic fields, indicating the field-induced evolution of the band structure. From the analysis of the high-field oscillations, a nontrivial Berry phase and a small effective mass are extracted, in agreement with the predicted Weyl semimetal phase in ferromagnetic MnBi2Te4. Furthermore, rotating the magnetization of MnBi2Te4 can lead to a splitting of the high-field oscillations, which suggests the enhanced asymmetry of the Weyl cones in tilted fields. Therefore, the observation of these magnetically tunable quantum oscillations clearly demonstrates the indispensable role of field in tuning the band structure or physical properties of MnBi2Te4.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) can be densely deployed in wireless networks to significantly enhance the communication channels. In this letter, we consider the downlink transmission from a multi-antenna base station (BS) to a single-antenna user, by exploiting the cooperative passive beamforming (CPB) and line-of-sight (LoS) path diversity gains of multi-IRS signal reflection. Unlike existing works where only one single multi-IRS reflection path from the BS to user is selected, we propose a new and more general multi-path beam routing scheme. Specifically, the BS sends the user's information signal via multiple orthogonal active beams (termed as active beam splitting), which point towards different IRSs. Then, these beamed signals are subsequently reflected by selected IRSs via their CPB in different paths, and finally coherently combined at the user's receiver (thus named {\it \textbf{passive beam combining}}). For this scheme, we formulate a new multi-path beam routing design problem to jointly optimize the number of IRS reflection paths, the selected IRSs for each of the reflection paths, the active/passive beamforming at the BS/each selected IRS, as well as the BS's power allocation over different active beams, so as to maximize the received signal power at the user. To solve this challenging problem, we first derive the optimal BS/IRS beamforming and BS power allocation for a given set of reflection paths. The clique-based approach in graph theory is then applied to solve the remaining multi-path selection problem efficiently. Simulation results show that our proposed multi-path beam routing scheme significantly outperforms its conventional single-path beam routing special case.

This paper is to consider the problems of estimation and recognition from the perspective of sigma-max inference (probability-possibility inference), with a focus on discovering whether some of the unknown quantities involved could be more faithfully modeled as fuzzy uncertainty. Two related key issues are addressed: 1) the random-fuzzy dual interpretation of unknown quantity being estimated; 2) the principle of selecting sigma-max operator for practical problems, such as estimation and recognition. Our perspective, conceived from definitions of randomness and fuzziness, is that continuous unknown quantity involved in estimation with inaccurate prior should be more appropriately modeled as randomness and handled by sigma inference; whereas discrete unknown quantity involved in recognition with insufficient (and inaccurate) prior could be better modeled as fuzziness and handled by max inference. The philosophy was demonstrated by an updated version of the well-known interacting multiple model (IMM) filter, for which the jump Markovian System is reformulated as a hybrid uncertainty system, with continuous state evolution modeled as usual as model-conditioned stochastic system and discrete mode transitions modeled as fuzzy system by a possibility (instead of probability) transition matrix, and hypotheses mixing is conducted by using the operation of "max" instead of "sigma". For our example of maneuvering target tracking using simulated data from both a short-range fire control radar and a long-range surveillance radar, the updated IMM filter shows significant improvement over the classic IMM filter, due to its peculiarity of hard decision of system model and a faster response to the transition of discrete mode.

This paper managed to induce probability theory (sigma system) and possibility theory (max system) respectively from randomness and fuzziness, through which the premature theory of possibility is expected to be well founded. Such an objective is achieved by addressing three open key issues: a) the lack of clear mathematical definitions of randomness and fuzziness; b) the lack of intuitive mathematical definition of possibility; c) the lack of abstraction procedure of the axiomatic definitions of probability/possibility from their intuitive definitions. Especially, the last issue involves the question why the key axiom of "maxitivity" is adopted for possibility measure. By taking advantage of properties of the well-defined randomness and fuzziness, we derived the important conclusion that "max" is the only but un-strict disjunctive operator that is applicable across the fuzzy event space, and is an exact operator for fuzzy feature extraction that assures the max inference is an exact mechanism. It is fair to claim that the long-standing problem of lack of consensus to the foundation of possibility theory is well resolved, which would facilitate wider adoption of possibility theory in practice and promote cross prosperity of the two uncertainty theories of probability and possibility.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a key enabling technology to realize smart and reconfigurable radio environment for wireless communications, by digitally controlling the signal reflection via a large number of passive reflecting elements in real-time. Different from conventional wireless communication techniques that only adapt to but have no or limited control over dynamic wireless channels, IRS provides a new and cost-effective means to combat the wireless channel impairments in a proactive manner. However, despite its great potential, IRS faces new and unique challenges in its efficient integration into wireless communication systems, especially its channel estimation and passive beamforming design under various practical hardware constraints. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a promising technique for wireless communication networks. By dynamically tuning the reflection amplitudes/phase shifts of a large number of passive elements, IRS enables flexible wireless channel control and configuration, and thereby enhances the wireless signal transmission rate and reliability significantly. Despite the vast literature on designing and optimizing assorted IRS-aided wireless systems, prior works have mainly focused on enhancing wireless links with single signal reflection only by one or multiple IRSs, which may be insufficient to boost the wireless link capacity under some harsh propagation conditions (e.g., indoor environment with dense blockages/obstructions). This issue can be tackled by employing two or more IRSs to assist each wireless link and jointly exploiting their single as well as multiple signal reflections over them. However, the resultant double-/multi-IRS aided wireless systems face more complex design issues as well as new practical challenges for implementation as compared to the conventional single-IRS counterpart, in terms of IRS reflection optimization, channel acquisition, as well as IRS deployment and association/selection. As such, a new paradigm for designing multi-IRS cooperative passive beamforming and joint active/passive beam routing arises which calls for innovative design approaches and optimization methods. In this paper, we give a tutorial overview of multi-IRS aided wireless networks, with an emphasis on addressing the new challenges due to multi-IRS signal reflection and routing. Moreover, we point out important directions worthy of research and investigation in the future.

Terahertz (THz) communications with a frequency band $0.1-10$ THz are envisioned as a promising solution to future high-speed wireless communication. Although with tens of gigahertz available bandwidth, THz signals suffer from severe free-spreading loss and molecular-absorption loss, which limit the wireless transmission distance. To compensate for the propagation loss, the ultra-massive multiple-input-multiple-output (UM-MIMO) can be applied to generate a high-gain directional beam by beamforming technologies. In this paper, a review of beamforming technologies for THz UM-MIMO systems is provided. Specifically, we first present the system model of THz UM-MIMO and identify its channel parameters and architecture types. Then, we illustrate the basic principles of beamforming via UM-MIMO and discuss the far-field and near-field assumptions in THz UM-MIMO. Moreover, an important beamforming strategy in THz band, i.e., beam training, is introduced wherein the beam training protocol and codebook design approaches are summarized. The intelligent-reflecting-surface (IRS)-assisted joint beamforming and multi-user beamforming in THz UM-MIMO systems are studied, respectively. The spatial-wideband effect and frequency-wideband effect in the THz beamforming are analyzed and the corresponding solutions are provided. Further, we present the corresponding fabrication techniques and illuminate the emerging applications benefiting from THz beamforming. Open challenges and future research directions on THz UM-MIMO systems are finally highlighted.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an emerging technology to enhance the spectral and energy efficiency of wireless communications cost-effectively. This letter considers a new multi-IRS aided wireless network where a cascaded line-of-sight (LoS) link is established between the base station (BS) and a remote user by leveraging the multi-hop signal reflection of selected IRSs. As compared to the conventional single-/double-hop IRS system, multi-hop IRS system provides more pronounced path diversity and cooperative passive beamforming gains, especially in the environment with dense obstacles. However, a more challenging joint active/passive beamforming and multi-hop beam routing problem also arises for maximizing the end-to-end channel gain. Furthermore, the number of IRS-associated channel coefficients increases drastically with the number of IRS hops. To tackle the above issues, in this letter we propose a new and efficient beam training based solution by considering the use of practical codebook-based BS/IRS active/passive beamforming without the need of explicit channel estimation. Instead of exhaustively or sequentially searching over all combinations of active and passive beam patterns for each beam route, a distributed beam training scheme is proposed to reduce the complexity, by exploiting the (nearly) time-invariant BS-IRS and inter-IRS channels and the cooperative training among the BS and IRSs' controllers. Simulation results show that our proposed design achieves the end-to-end channel gain close to that of the sequential beam search, but at a much lower training overhead and complexity.

The recent discovery of superconductivity in doped infinite-layer nickelates has stimulated intensive interest, especially for similarities and differences compared to that in cuprate superconductors. In contrast to cuprates, although earlier magnetization measurement reveals a Curie-Weiss-like behavior in undoped infinite-layer nickelates, there is no magnetic ordering observed by elastic neutron scattering down to liquid helium temperature. Until now, the nature of the magnetic ground state in undoped infinite-layer nickelates was still elusive. Here, we perform a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment through 139La nuclei to study the intrinsic spin susceptibility of infinite-layer LaNiO2. First, the signature for magnetic ordering or freezing is absent in the 139La NMR spectrum down to 0.24 K, which unambiguously confirms a paramagnetic ground state in LaNiO2. Second, a pseudogap-like behavior instead of Curie-Weiss-like behavior is observed in both the temperature-dependent Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1), which is widely observed in both underdoped cuprates and iron-based superconductors. Furthermore, the scaling behavior between the Knight shift and 1/T1T has also been discussed. Finally, the present results imply a considerable exchange interaction in infinite-layer nickelates, which sets a strong constraint for the proposed theoretical models.

To support large-scale deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in future, a new wireless communication paradigm, namely, cellular-connected UAV, has recently received an upsurge of interests in both academia and industry. Specifically, cellular base stations (BSs) and spectrum are reused to serve UAVs as new aerial user equipments (UEs) for meeting their communication requirements. However, compared to traditional terrestrial UEs, the high altitude of UAVs results in more frequent line-of-sight (LoS) channels with both their associated and non-associated BSs in a much wider area, which causes stronger aerial-ground interference to both UAVs and terrestrial UEs. As such, conventional techniques designed for mitigating the terrestrial interference become ineffective in coping with the new and more severe UAV-terrestrial interference. To tackle this challenge, we propose in this article new interference mitigation solutions for achieving spectral efficient operation of the cellular network with co-existing UAVs and terrestrial UEs. In particular, we exploit the powerful sensing capability of UAVs and inactive BSs in the network for interference mitigation/cancellation. Numerical results are presented to verify the efficacy of the proposed solutions and show their significant spectrum efficiency gains over terrestrial interference mitigation techniques.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is envisioned to play a significant role in future wireless communication systems as an effective means of reconfiguring the radio signal propagation environment. In this paper, we study a new multi-IRS aided massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, where a multi-antenna BS transmits independent messages to a set of remote single-antenna users using orthogonal beams that are subsequently reflected by different groups of IRSs via their respective multi-hop passive beamforming over pairwise line-of-sight (LoS) links. We aim to select optimal IRSs and their beam routing path for each of the users, along with the active/passive beamforming at the BS/IRSs, such that the minimum received signal power among all users is maximized. This problem is particularly difficult to solve due to a new type of path separation constraints for avoiding the IRS-reflected signal induced interference among different users. To tackle this difficulty, we first derive the optimal BS/IRS active/passive beamforming solutions based on their practical codebooks given the reflection paths. Then we show that the resultant multi-beam multi-hop routing problem can be recast as an equivalent graph-optimization problem, which is however NP-complete. To solve this challenging problem, we propose an efficient recursive algorithm to partially enumerate the feasible routing solutions, which is able to effectively balance the performance-complexity trade-off. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves near-optimal performance with low complexity and outperforms other benchmark schemes. Useful insights into the optimal multi-beam multi-hop routing design are also drawn under different setups of the multi-IRS aided massive MIMO network.

Structural balance theory describes stable configurations of topologies of signed interpersonal appraisal networks. Existing models explaining the convergence of appraisal networks to structural balance either diverge in finite time, or could get stuck in jammed states, or converge to only complete graphs. In this paper, we study the open problem how steady non-all-to-all structural balance emerges via local dynamics of interpersonal appraisals. We first compare two well-justified definitions of structural balance for general non-all-to-all graphs, i.e., the triad-wise structural balance and the two-faction structural balance, and thoroughly study their relations. Secondly, based on three widely adopted sociological mechanisms: the symmetry mechanism, the influence mechanism, and the homophily mechanism, we propose two simple models of gossip-like appraisal dynamics, the symmetry-influence-homophily (SIH) dynamics and the symmetry-influence-opinion-homophily (SIOH) dynamics. In these models, the appraisal network starting from any initial condition almost surely achieves non-all-to-all triad-wise and two-faction structural balance in finite time respectively. Moreover, the SIOH dynamics capture the co-evolution of interpersonal appraisals and individuals' opinions. Regarding the theoretical contributions, we show that the equilibrium set of the SIH (SIOH resp.) dynamics corresponds to the set of all the possible triad-wise (two-faction resp.) structural balance configurations of the appraisal networks. Moreover, we prove that, for any initial condition, the appraisal networks in the SIH (SIOH resp.) dynamics almost surely achieve triad-wise (two-faction resp.) structural balance in finite time. Numerical studies of the SIH dynamics also imply some insightful take-home messages on whether multilateral relations reduce or exacerbate conflicts.
