This paper is the first to present a novel, non-contact method that utilizes orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals (of frequency 5.23 GHz, emitted by a software defined radio) to radio-expose the pulmonary patients in order to differentiate between five prevalent respiratory diseases, i.e., Asthma, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Interstitial lung disease (ILD), Pneumonia (PN), and Tuberculosis (TB). The fact that each pulmonary disease leads to a distinct breathing pattern, and thus modulates the OFDM signal in a different way, motivates us to acquire OFDM-Breathe dataset, first of its kind. It consists of 13,920 seconds of raw RF data (at 64 distinct OFDM frequencies) that we have acquired from a total of 116 subjects in a hospital setting (25 healthy control subjects, and 91 pulmonary patients). Among the 91 patients, 25 have Asthma, 25 have COPD, 25 have TB, 5 have ILD, and 11 have PN. We implement a number of machine and deep learning models in order to do lung disease classification using OFDM-Breathe dataset. The vanilla convolutional neural network outperforms all the models with an accuracy of 97%, and stands out in terms of precision, recall, and F1-score. The ablation study reveals that it is sufficient to radio-observe the human chest on seven different microwave frequencies only, in order to make a reliable diagnosis (with 96% accuracy) of the underlying lung disease. This corresponds to a sensing overhead that is merely 10.93% of the allocated bandwidth. This points to the feasibility of 6G integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems of future where 89.07% of bandwidth still remains available for information exchange amidst on-demand health sensing. Through 6G ISAC, this work provides a tool for mass screening for respiratory diseases (e.g., COVID-19) at public places.

This work performs the statistical QoS analysis of a Rician block-fading reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted D2D link in which the transmit node operates under delay QoS constraints. First, we perform mode selection for the D2D link, in which the D2D pair can either communicate directly by relaying data from RISs or through a base station (BS). Next, we provide closed-form expressions for the effective capacity (EC) of the RIS-assisted D2D link. When channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is available, the transmit D2D node communicates with the variable rate $r_t(n)$ (adjustable according to the channel conditions); otherwise, it uses a fixed rate $r_t$. It allows us to model the RIS-assisted D2D link as a Markov system in both cases. We also extend our analysis to overlay and underlay D2D settings. To improve the throughput of the RIS-assisted D2D link when CSIT is unknown, we use the HARQ retransmission scheme and provide the EC analysis of the HARQ-enabled RIS-assisted D2D link. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that: i) the EC increases with an increase in RIS elements, ii) the EC decreases when strict QoS constraints are imposed at the transmit node, iii) the EC decreases with an increase in the variance of the path loss estimation error, iv) the EC increases with an increase in the probability of ON states, v) EC increases by using HARQ when CSIT is unknown, and it can reach up to $5\times$ the usual EC (with no HARQ and without CSIT) by using the optimal number of retransmissions.

A large number of survey papers are being published in blockchain since the first survey appeared in 2017. A person entering into the field of blockchain is faced with the issue of which blockchain surveys to read and why? Who is publishing these surveys and what is the nature of these surveys? Which of the publishers are publishing more such surveys and what are the lengths of the published surveys? Which kind of survey is getting more citations? Which of the authors is collaborating on such surveys? etc. All these questions motivated us to analyze the trends in publishing blockchain surveys. In this paper, we have performed a bibliometric analysis on $801$ surveys or review papers published in the field of blockchain in the last approximately five years. We have analyzed the papers with respect to the publication type, publishers and venue, references, citations, paper length, different categories, year, countries, authors, and their collaborations and found interesting insights. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first of its kind and hope to provide better understanding of the field.

This work does the statistical quality-of-service (QoS) analysis of a block-fading device-to-device (D2D) link in a multi-tier cellular network that consists of a macro-BS (BSMC) and a micro-BS (BSmC) which both operate in full-duplex (FD) mode. For the D2D link under consideration, we first formulate the mode selection problem-whereby D2D pair could either communicate directly, or, through the BSmC, or, through the BSMC-as a ternary hypothesis testing problem. Next, to compute the effective capacity (EC) for the given D2D link, we assume that the channel state information (CSI) is not available at the transmit D2D node, and hence, it transmits at a fixed rate r with a fixed power. This allows us to model the D2D link as a Markov system with six-states. We consider both overlay and underlay modes for the D2D link. Moreover, to improve the throughput of the D2D link, we assume that the D2D pair utilizes two special automatic repeat request (ARQ) schemes, i.e., Hybrid-ARQ (HARQ) and truncated HARQ. Furthermore, we consider two distinct queue models at the transmit D2D node, based upon how it responds to the decoding failure at the receive D2D node. Eventually, we provide closed-form expressions for the EC for both HARQ-enabled D2D link and truncated HARQ-enabled D2D link, under both queue models. Noting that the EC looks like a quasi-concave function of r, we further maximize the EC by searching for an optimal rate via the gradient-descent method. Simulation results provide us the following insights: i) EC decreases with an increase in the QoS exponent, ii) EC of the D2D link improves when HARQ is employed, iii) EC increases with an increase in the quality of self-interference cancellation techniques used at BSmC and BSMC in FD mode.

Internet-of-Things (IoT) envisions a future in which human beings communicate with each other and with devices that have identities and virtual personalities, as well as sensing, processing, and networking capabilities, which will allow the developing of smart environments that operate with little or no human intervention. In such IoT environments, that will have battery-operated sensors and devices, energy efficiency becomes a fundamental concern. Thus, energy-efficient (EE) connectivity is gaining significant attention from the industrial and academic communities. This work aims to provide a comprehensive state-of-the-art survey on the energy efficiency of medium access control (MAC) protocols for cellular IoT. we provide a detailed discussion on the sources of energy dissipation at the MAC layer and then propose solutions. In addition to reviewing the proposed MAC designs, we also provide insights and suggestions that can guide practitioners and researchers in designing EE MAC protocols that extend the battery life of IoT devices. Finally, we identify a range of challenging open problems that should be solved for providing EE MAC services for IoT devices, along with corresponding opportunities and future research ideas to address these challenges.

Blockchain is challenging the status quo of the central trust infrastructure currently prevalent in the Internet towards a design principle that is underscored by decentralization, transparency, and trusted auditability. In ideal terms, blockchain advocates a decentralized, transparent, and more democratic version of the Internet. Essentially being a trusted and decentralized database, blockchain finds its applications in fields as varied as the energy sector, forestry, fisheries, mining, material recycling, air pollution monitoring, supply chain management, and their associated operations. In this paper, we present a survey of blockchain-based network applications. Our goal is to cover the evolution of blockchain-based systems that are trying to bring in a renaissance in the existing, mostly centralized, space of network applications. While re-imagining the space with blockchain, we highlight various common challenges, pitfalls, and shortcomings that can occur. Our aim is to make this work as a guiding reference manual for someone interested in shifting towards a blockchain-based solution for one's existing use case or automating one from the ground up.

This study uses the article content and metadata of four important computer networking periodicals-IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials (COMST), IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking (TON), ACM Special Interest Group on Data Communications (SIGCOMM), and IEEE International Conference on Computer Communications (INFOCOM)-obtained using ACM, IEEE Xplore, Scopus and CrossRef, for an 18-year period (2000-2017) to address important bibliometrics questions. All of the venues are prestigious, yet they publish quite different research. The first two of these periodicals (COMST and TON) are highly reputed journals of the fields while SIGCOMM and INFOCOM are considered top conferences of the field. SIGCOMM and INFOCOM publish new original research. TON has a similar genre and publishes new original research as well as the extended versions of different research published in the conferences such as SIGCOMM and INFOCOM, while COMST publishes surveys and reviews (which not only summarize previous works but highlight future research opportunities). In this study, we aim to track the co-evolution of trends in the COMST and TON journals and compare them to the publication trends in INFOCOM and SIGCOMM. Our analyses of the computer networking literature include: (a) metadata analysis; (b) content-based analysis; and (c) citation analysis. In addition, we identify the significant trends and the most influential authors, institutes and countries, based on the publication count as well as article citations. Through this study, we are proposing a methodology and framework for performing a comprehensive bibliometric analysis on computer networking research. To the best of our knowledge, no such study has been undertaken in computer networking until now.

Consider a device to device (D2D) link which utilizes the mode selection to decide between the direct mode and cellular mode. This paper investigates the impact of mode selection on effective capacity (EC) (the maximum sustainable constant arrival rate at a transmitters queue under statistical quality of service constraints) of a D2D link for both overlay and underlay scenarios. Due to lack of channel state information, the transmit device sends data at a fixed rate and fixed power; this fact combined with mode selection makes the D2D channel a Markov service process. Thus, the EC is obtained by calculating the entries of the transition probability matrix corresponding to the Markov D2D channel. Numerical results show that the EC decays exponentially (and the gain of overlay D2D over underlay D2D diminishes) with the increase in estimation error of the pathloss measurements utilized by the mode selection.

Many of these devices have limited battery life with constraints on transmit power. High user power consumption in cellular networks restricts the deployment of many IoT devices in 5G. To enable the inclusion of these devices, 5G should be supplemented with strategies and schemes to reduce user power consumption. Therefore, we present a novel joint uplink user association and resource allocation scheme for minimizing user transmit power while meeting the quality of service. We analyze our scheme for two-tier heterogeneous network (HetNet) and show an average transmit power of -2.8 dBm and 8.2 dBm for our algorithms compared to 20 dBm in state-of-the-art Max reference signal received power (RSRP) and channel individual offset (CIO) based association schemes.

Recent exponential growth of data over cellular networks has cause the progression from conventional mobile communication networks to heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets). Quality of experience (QoE)-aware traffic load balancing in such dense HetNets is considered a major problem. Current HetNets exploit reactive load balancing schemes that hinder in achieving desired QoE gain. In this paper, we propose a novel proactive load balancing framework which leverages content caching and mobility prediction to improve user QoE. We use Semi-Markov model to predict users' future cells and a novel proactive caching algorithm is proposed to pre-fetch user future demands at these cells. This allows us to reduce cell congestion and offers better average downlink rates. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, system level simulations are performed and compared with state of the art approaches. Encouragingly, our system achieves up-to $98.7\%$ cell load balancing in terms of Jain's fairness index, reduces $20\%$ backhaul load, and provides $31\%$ improved downlink rates at congested cells in contrast to reactive approaches.

In higher educational institutes, many students have to struggle hard to complete different courses since there is no dedicated support offered to students who need special attention in the registered courses. Machine learning techniques can be utilized for students' grades prediction in different courses. Such techniques would help students to improve their performance based on predicted grades and would enable instructors to identify such individuals who might need assistance in the courses. In this paper, we use Collaborative Filtering (CF), Matrix Factorization (MF), and Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBM) techniques to systematically analyze a real-world data collected from Information Technology University (ITU), Lahore, Pakistan. We evaluate the academic performance of ITU students who got admission in the bachelor's degree program in ITU's Electrical Engineering department. The RBM technique is found to be better than the other techniques used in predicting the students' performance in the particular course.
