A note on Morita equivalence to graph inverse semigroups
Abstract: We characterize the inverse semigroups that are Morita equivalent to graph inverse semigroups. We also consider a generalization to inverse semigroups associated with left cancellative categories.

On the inverse hull of a Markov shift
Abstract: In this paper we provide an abstract characterization of the inverse hulls of semigroups associated with Markov shifts. As an application of the characterization we give an example of Markov shifts that are not conjugate, but have isomorphic inverse hulls.

On zigzag maps and the path category of an inverse semigroup
Abstract: We study the path category of an inverse semigroup admitting unique maximal idempotents and give an abstract characterization of the inverse semigroups arising from zigzag maps on a left cancellative category. As applications we show that every inverse semigroup is Morita equivalent to an inverse semigroup of zigzag maps and hence the class of Cuntz-Krieger $C^*$-algebras of singly aligned categor… ▽ More

Condition (K) for inverse semigroups and the ideal structure of their $C^*$-algebras
Abstract: Inspired by results for graph $C^*$-algebras, we investigate connections between the ideal structure of an inverse semigroup $S$ and that of its tight $C^*$-algebra by relating ideals in $S$ to certain open invariant sets in the associated tight groupoid. We also develop analogues of Conditions (L) and (K) for inverse semigroups, which are related to certain congruences on $S$. We finish with appl… ▽ More

Local electroexfoliation of graphene with a STM tip
Abstract: Graphite surfaces can be manipulated by several methods to create graphene structures of different shapes and sizes. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) can be used to create these structures either through mechanical contact between the tip and the surface or through electro-exfoliation. In the latter, the mechanisms involved in the process of exfoliation with an applied voltage are not fully und… ▽ More

Amenability and Uniqueness for Groupoids Associated with Inverse Semigroups
Abstract: We investigate recent uniqueness theorems for reduced $C^*$-algebras of Hausdorff étale groupoids in the context of inverse semigroups. In many cases the distinguished subalgebra is closely related to the structure of the inverse semigroup. In order to apply our results to full $C^*$-algebras, we also investigate amenability. More specifically, we obtain conditions that guarantee amenability of th… ▽ More

Comparing the distribution of the electronic gap of an organic molecule with its photoluminescence spectrum
Abstract: The electronic gap structure the organic molecule N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-(1,1'-biphenyl)-4,4'-diamine, or TPD, has been studied by means of a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) operated under ambient conditions, and by Photoluminescence (PL) analysis. Thousands of current-voltage characteristics have been measured at different spots of the sample showing the typical behavior of a… ▽ More

On inverse semigroup $C^*$-algebras and crossed products
Abstract: We describe the $C^*$-algebra of an $E$-unitary or strongly 0-$E$-unitary inverse semigroup as the partial crossed product of a commutative $C^*$-algebra by the maximal group image of the inverse semigroup. We give a similar result for the $C^*$-algebra of the tight groupoid of an inverse semigroup. We also study conditions on a groupoid $C^*$-algebra to be Morita equivalent to a full crossed prod… ▽ More

$C^*$-algebras of inverse semigroups: amenability and weak containment
Abstract: We argue that weak containment is an appropriate notion of amenability for inverse semigroups. Given an inverse semigroup $S$ and a homomorphism $φ$ of $S$ onto a group $G$, we show, under an assumption on $\ker(φ)$, that $S$ has weak containment if and only if $G$ is amenable and $\ker(φ)$ has weak containment. Using Fell bundle amenability, we find a related result for inverse semigroups with… ▽ More
