We consider the propagation of photons in a model of a charged scalar Bose-Einstein (BE) condensate. We determine the dispersion relations of the collective modes, as well as the photon polarization tensor and the dielectric constant in the model. Two modes correspond to the transverse photon polarizations, with dispersion relations of the usual form for transverse photons in a plasma. The other two modes, denoted as the $(\pm)$ modes, are combinations of the longitudinal photon and the massive scalar field. Their dispersion relations behave very differently as functions of momentum. The $(+)$ mode dispersion relation increases steadily and remains greater than the momentum as the momentum increases. The dispersion relation of the $(-)$ mode decreases in a given momentum range, with the group velocity being negative in that range, while in another range it increases steadily but remains smaller than the momentum, akin to the situation in a medium with an index of refraction greater than 1. We consider the non-relativistic limit of the $(\pm)$ dispersion relations and discuss some aspects of the results. We also determine the wavefunctions of the $(\pm)$ modes, which are useful to obtain the corrections to the dispersion relations, e.g., imaginary parts due to the damping effects and/or the effects of scattering, due to the interactions with the excitations of the system. The results can be useful in various physical contexts that have been considered in the literature involving the electrodynamics of a charged scalar BE condensate.

In an optically active medium, such as a plasma that contains a neutrino background, the left-handed and right-handed polarization photon modes acquire different dispersion relations. We study the propagation of photons in such a medium, which is otherwise isotropic, within the framework of the covariant collissionless Boltzmann equation incorporating a term that parametrizes the optical activity. Using the linear response approximation, we obtain the formulas for the components of the photon polarization tensor, expressed in terms of integrals over the momentum distribution function of the background particles. The main result here is the formula for the P- and CP-breaking component of the photon polarization tensor in terms of the parameter involved in the new term we consider in the Boltzmann equation to describe the effects of optical activity. We discuss the results for some particular cases, such as long-wavelength and non-relativistic limits, for illustrate purposes. We also discuss the generalizations of the P- and CP-breaking term we included in the Boltzmann equation. In particular we consider the application to a plasma with a neutrino background and establish contact with calculations of the photon self-energy in those systems in the framework of Thermal Field Theory.

We consider the propagation of a neutrino or an antineutrino in a medium composed of fermions $f$ and scalars $φ$ interacting via a Yukawa-type coupling of the form $\bar fνφ$, for neutrino energies at which the processes like $ν+ φ\leftrightarrow f$ or $ν+ \bar f \leftrightarrow \barφ$, and the corresponding ones for the antineutrino, are kinematically accessible. The relevant energy values are around $|m^2_φ- m^2_f|/2m_φ$ or $|m^2_φ- m^2_f|/2m_f$, where $m_φ$ and $m_f$ are the masses of $φ$ and $f$, respectively. We refer to either one of these regions as a resonance energy range. Near these points, the one-loop formula for the neutrino self-energy has a singularity. From a technical point of view, that feature is indicative that the self-energy acquires an imaginary part, which is associated with damping effects and cannot be neglected, while the integral formula for the real part must be evaluated using the principal value of the integral. We carry out the calculations explicitly for some cases that allow us to give analytic results. Writing the dispersion relation in the form $ω= κ+ V_{\text{eff}} - iγ/2$, we give the explicit formula for $V_{\text{eff}}$ and $γ$ for the cases considered. When the neutrino energy is either much larger or much smaller than the resonance energy, $V_{\text{eff}}$ reduces to the effective potential that has been already determined in the literature in the high or low momentum regime, respectively. The virtue of the formula we give for $V_{\text{eff}}$ is that it is valid also in the \emph{resonance energy range}, which is outside the two limits mentioned. As a guide to possible applications we give the relevant formulas for $V_{\text{eff}}$ and $γ$, and consider the solution to the oscillation equations including the damping term, in a simple two-generation case.

We consider the calculation of the thermal self-energy of a neutrino that propagates in a medium composed of fermions and scalars interacting via a Yukawa-type coupling, in the case that the neutri no energy is much larger than the fermion and scalar masses, as well as the temperature and chemical potentials of the background. In this kinematic regime the one-loop contribution to the imaginary part of the self-energy is negligible. We consider the two-loop contribution and we encounter the so-called pinch singularities which are known to arise in higher loop self-energy calculations in Thermal Field Theory. With a judicious use of the properties and parametrizations of the thermal propagators the singularities are treated effectively and actually disappear. From the imaginary part of the self-energy, we obtain a precise formula for the damping matrix expressed in terms of integrals over the background particle distributions. The formulas predict a specific dependence of the damping terms on the neutrino energy, depending on the background conditions. For guidance to estimating the effects in specific contexts, we compute the damping terms for several limiting cases of the momentum distribution functions of the background particles. We discuss briefly the connection between the results of our calculations for the damping matrix and the decoherence effects described in terms of the Lindblad equation.

We use the exponential parametrization of the nonextensive distribution to calculate the dielectric constant in an electron gas obeying the nonextensive statistics. As we show, the exponential parametrization allows us to make such calculations in a straightforward way, bypassing the use of intricate formulas obtained from integral tables and/or numerical methods. For illustrative purposes, we apply first the method to the calculation of the permittivity and the corresponding dispersion relation in the ultrarelativistic limit of the electron gas, and verify that it reproduces in a simple way the results that had been obtained previously by other authors using the standard parametrization of the nonextensive distribution. In the same spirit we revisit the calculation of the same quantities for a non-relativistic gas, in the high frequency limit, which has been previously carried out, first by Lima, Silva and Santos, and subsequently revised by Chen and Li. Our own results agree with those obtained by Chen and Li. For completeness, we also apply the method the low frequency limit in the non-relativistic case, which has been previously considered by Dai, Chen and Li in the context of the stream plasma instability. We discuss some features of the results obtained in each case and their interpretation of terms of generalized nonextensive quantities, such as the Debye length $λ_{D}^{(q)}$, the plasma frequency $ω_{p}^{(q)}$ and the ultra-relativistic frequency $Ω^{(q)}_{e,rel}$. In the limit $q \rightarrow 1$ such quantities reduce to their classical value and the classical result of the dispersion relations are reproduced.

We consider the decoherence effects in the propagation of active neutrinos due to the non-forward neutrino scattering processes in a matter background composed of electrons and nucleons. We calculate the contribution to the imaginary part of the neutrino self-energy arising from such processes. Since the initial neutrino state is depleted but does not actually disappear (the initial neutrino transitions into a neutrino of a different flavor but does not decay) those processes should be associated with decoherence effects that cannot be described in terms of the coherent evolution of the state vector. Based on the formalism developed in our previous work for treating the non-forward scattering processes using the notion of the stochastic evolution of the state, we identify the jump operators, as used in the context of the master or Lindblad equation, in terms of the results of the the calculation of the non-forward neutrino scattering contribution to the imaginary part of the neutrino self-energy. As a guide to estimating the decoherence effects in situations of practical interest we give explicit formulas for the decoherence terms for different background conditions, and point out some of the salient features in particular the neutrino energy dependence. To establish contact wih previous works in which the decoherence terms are treated as phenomenological parameters, we consider the solution to the evolution equation in the two-generation case. We give formulas that are useful for estimating the effects of the decoherence terms under various conditions and environments, including the typical conditions applicable to long baseline experiments, where matter effects are important. In those contexts the effects appear to be small, and indicative that if significant decoherence effects were to be found they would be due to non-standard contributions to the decoherence terms.

We consider the decoherence effects in the propagation of neutrinos in a background composed of a scalar particle and a fermion due to the non-forward neutrino scattering processes. Using a simple model for the coupling of the form $\bar f_Rν_Lφ$ we calculate the contribution to the imaginary part of the neutrino self-energy arising from the non-forward neutrino scattering processes in such backgrounds, from which the damping terms are determined. In the case we are considering, in which the initial neutrino state is depleted but does not actually disappear (the initial neutrino transitions into a neutrino of a different flavor but does not decay into a $fφ$ pair, for example), we associate the damping terms with decoherence effects. For this purpose we give a precise prescription to identify the decoherence terms, as used in the context of the master or Linblad equation, in terms of the damping terms we have obtained from the calculation of the imaginary part of the neutrino self-energy from the non-forward neutrino scattering processes. The results can be directly useful in the context of Dark Matter-neutrino interaction models in which the scalar and/or fermion constitute the dark-matter, and can also serve to guide the generalizations to other models and/or situations in which the decoherence effects in the propagation of neutrinos originate from the non-forward scattering processes may be important. As a guide to estimating such decoherence effects, the contributions to the absorptive part of the self-energy and the corresponding damping terms are computed explicitly in the context of the model we consider, for several limiting cases of the momentum distribution functions of the background particles.

We calculate the imaginary part of the neutrino self-energy in this case, from which the damping terms are determined. The results are useful in the context of Dark Matter-neutrino interaction models in which the scalar and/or fermion constitute the dark-matter. The corresponding formulas for models in which the scalar particle couples to two neutrinos via a coupling of the form $λ^{(ννφ)}\barν^c_Rν_Lφ$ are then obtained as a special case, which can be important also in the context of neutrino collective oscillations in a supernova and in the Early Universe hot plasma before neutrino decoupling. A particular feature of our results is that the damping term in a $νφ$ background is independent of the antineutrino-neutrino asymmetry in the background. Therefore, the relative importance of the damping term may be more significant if the neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry in the background is small, because the leading $Z$-exchange and $φ$-exchange contributions to the effective potential, which are proportional to the neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry, are suppressed in that case, while the damping term is not.

The corresponding formulas for models in which the scalar particle couples to two neutrinos via a coupling of the form $λ^{(ννφ)}\barν^c_Rν_Lφ$ are then obtained as a special case. In the presence of these interactions there can be new contributions to the neutrino effective potential and index of refraction in the context of neutrino collective oscillations in a supernova and in the Early Universe hot plasma before neutrino decoupling. The formulas obtained here can be used to estimate those effects and/or put limits on the model parameters based on the contribution that such interactions can have in those contexts. A particular feature of the results is that the contribution to the neutrino self-energy or effective potential in a neutrino background due to the $ννφ$ coupling is proportional to the antineutrino-neutrino asymmetry $(n_{\barν} - n_ν)$, in contrast to the standard $Z$ contribution which is proportional to $(n_ν - n_{\barν})$. Therefore the two contributions tend to cancel. If the cancellation is significant, it is conceivable that the $O(1/m^4_φ)$ terms give the dominant contribution. Alternatively, a limit can be set by requiring that the contribution of the $ννφ$ interaction to the neutrino effective potential does not cancel the standard contribution in an appreciable way.

We study the electromagnetic coupling of a neutrino that propagates in a two-stream electron background medium. Specifically, we calculate the electromagnetic vertex function for a medium that consists of a \emph{normal} electron background plus another electron \emph{stream} background that is moving with a velocity four-vector $v^μ$ relative to the normal background. The results can be used as the basis for studying the neutrino electromagnetic properties and various processes in such a medium. As an application, we calculate the neutrino dispersion relation in the presence of an external magnetic field ($\vec B$), focused in the case in which $B$ is inhomogeneous, keeping only the terms of the lowest order in $1/m^2_W$ and linear in the $B$ and its gradient. We show that the dispersion relation contains additional anisotropic terms involving the derivatives of $\vec B$, such as the gradient of $\hat k\cdot(\vec v\times\vec B)$, which involve the stream background velocity, and a term of the form $\hat k\cdot(\nabla\times \vec B)$ that can be present in the absence of the stream background, in addition to a term of the form $\hat k\cdot\vec v$ and the well known term $\hat k\cdot\vec B$ that arises in the constant $\vec B$ case. The derivative-dependent terms are even under a $CP$ transformation. As a result, in contrast to the latter two just mentioned, they depend on the sum of the particle and antiparticle densities and therefore can be non-zero in a $CP$-symmetric medium in which the particle and antiparticle densities are equal.

We study the propagation of a neutrino in a medium that consists of two or more thermal backgrounds of electrons and nucleons moving with some relative velocity, in the presence of a static and homogeneous electromagnetic field. We calculate the neutrino self-energy and dispersion relation using the linear thermal Schwinger propagator, we give the formulas for the dispersion relation and discuss general features of the results obtained, in particular the effects of the stream contributions. As a specific example we discuss in some detail the case of a magnetized two-stream electron, i.e., two electron backgrounds with a relative velocity $\vec v$ in the presence of a magnetic field. For a neutrino propagating with momentum $\vec k$, in the presence of the stream the neutrino dispersion relation acquires an anisotropic contribution of the form $\hat k\cdot\vec v$ in addition to the well known term $\hat k\cdot\vec B$, as well as an additional contribution proportional to $\vec B\cdot\vec v$. We consider the contribution from a nucleon stream background as an example of other possible stream backgrounds, and comment on possible generalizations to take into account the effects of inhomogeneous fields. We explain why a term of the form $\hat k\cdot(\vec v\times\vec B)$ does not appear in the dispersion relation in the constant field case, while a term of similar form can appear in the presence of an inhomogeneous field involving its gradient.

We present a systematic decomposition of the thermal self-energy, from which the dispersion relation of the modes that propagate in the medium are obtained. We find that there are several modes and in each case we obtain the equation for the dispersion relation as well as the corresponding spin-3/2 spinor. As an example of the general procedure and results, we consider a model in which the chiral spin-3/2 particle couples to a spin-1/2 fermion and a scalar particle, and propagates in a thermal background composed of such particles. The dispersion relations and corresponding spinors are detemined explcitly in this case from the 1-loop TFT expression for the self-energy. The results in this case share some resemblance and analogies with the photon and the chiral fermion cases but, as already noted, there are also differences. The present work provides the groundwork for considering problems related to the properties of chiral spin-3/2 particles in a medium, in analogy to the case of neutrinos for example, which can be relevant in physical contexts of current interest.

We compute the cross section for the electromagnetic annihilation into charged leptons, and the electromagnetic scattering off nucleons, of spin-3/2 self-conjugate (Majorana) particles using the general form of the electromagnetic vertex function that was obtained previously for such particles. In addition to the restrictions imposed by common principles such as electromagnetic gauge invariance and hermiticity, the vertex function incorporates the restriction due to the Majorana condition as well as the particular properties related to the spinors in the Rarita-Schwinger representation, and is the counterpart of the so-called anapole interaction of spin-1/2 Majorana particles. The formulas obtained for the cross sections share certain similarities with the corresponding results in the spin-1/2 case, but they also reveal some important differences which are pointed out and discussed. The results given here can be useful for applications involving the electromagnetic interactions of spin-3/2 or spin-1/2 Majorana particles in several contexts that have been of interest in the recent literature such as nucleosynthesis and dark matter.

The structure of the electromagnetic vertex function of spin-3/2 particles is analyzed in a general way, for the diagonal and off-diagonal couplings, of charged as well as neutral particles including the case of self-conjugate (Majorana) particles. The restrictions imposed by common principles such as electromagnetic gauge invariance and hermiticity are studied, and the implications due to the discrete space-time symmetries or the Majorana condition are deduced when they are applicable. In some cases certain features of the vertex function are analogous to the known ones for the spin-1/2 or spin-1 particles, but we find and discuss other particular properties which are related to the spin-3/2 Rarita-Schwinger representation. For example, in the diagonal Majorana case, the vertex function can contain a term of the form $γ_μγ_5$, which resembles the axial charge radius term for Majorana neutrinos, plus another one that resembles the vertex function for self-conjugate spin-1 particles, but with the particularity that the two terms may not appear independently of each other, but instead with a specific relative coefficient. In essence this is due to the requirement that the vertex function does not mix the genuine spin-3/2 degrees of freedom with the spurious spin-1/2 components of the Rarita-Schwinger representation. The analogous results for the other cases (off-diagonal and charged couplings) are discussed as well.

We apply the Thermal Field Theory (TFT) methods to study the propagation of photons in a plasma wire, that is, a system in which the electrons are confined to a one-dimensional tube or wire, but are otherwise free. We find the appropriate expression for the photon \emph{free-field} propagator in such a medium, and write down the dispersion relation in terms of the free-field propagator and the photon self-energy. The self-energy is then calculated in the one-loop approximation and the corresponding dispersion relation is determined and studied in some detail. Our work differs from previous work on this subject in that we do not adopt any specific electronic wave functions in the coordinates that are transverse to the idealized wire, or rely on particular features of the electronic structure. We treat the electrons as a free gas of particles, constrained to move in one dimension, but otherwise in a model-independent way only following the rules of TFT adapted to the situation at hand. For the appropriate conditions of the plasma the \emph{static approximation} can be employed and the dispersion relation reduces to the results obtained in previous works, but the formula that we obtain is valid under more general conditions, including those in which the static approximation is not valid. In particular, the dispersion relation has several branches, which are not revealed if the static approximation is used. The dispersion relations obtained reproduce several unique features of these systems that have been observed in recent experiments.

Various decay processes, such as the decay of a spin-1 particle into two photons or the gravitational decay of a spin-1/2 fermion, are forbidden in the vacuum by a combination of requirements, including angular momentum conservation, Lorentz invariance and gauge invariance. We show that such processes can occur in a medium, such as a thermal background of particles, even if it is homogeneous and isotropic. We carry out a model-independent analysis of the vertex function for such processes in terms of a set of form factors, and show that the amplitude can be non-zero while remaining consistent with the symmetry principles mentioned above. The results simulate Lorentz symmetry violating effects, although in this case they arise from completely Lorentz-invariant physics.

We propose a model for describing the growth on an untreated tumor, which is characterized in a simple way by a minimal number of parameters with a well-defined physical interpretation. The model is motivated by invoking the Master Equation and the Principle of Detailed Balance in the present context, and it is easily generalizable to include the effects of various types of therapies. In the simplest version that we consider here, it leads to a linear equation that describes the population growth in a dynamic environment, for which a complete solution can be given in terms of the integral of the growth rate. The essential features of the general solution for this case are illustrated with a few examples.

We study the electromagnetic properties of a system that consists of an electron background and a neutrino gas that may be moving or at rest, as a whole, relative to the background. The photon self-energy for this system is characterized by the usual transverse and longitudinal polarization functions, and two additional ones which are the focus of our calculations, that give rise to birefringence and anisotropic effects in the photon dispersion relations. Expressions for them are obtained, which depend on the neutrino number densities and involve momentum integrals over the electron distribution functions, and are valid for any value of the photon momentum and general conditions of the electron gas. Those expressions are evaluated explicitly for several special cases and approximations which are generally useful in astrophysical and cosmological settings. Besides studying the photon dispersion relations, we consider the macroscopic electrodynamic equations for this system, which involve the standard dielectric and permeability constants plus two additional ones related to the photon self-energy functions. As an illustration, the equations are used to discuss the evolution of a magnetic field perturbation in such a medium. This particular phenomena has also been considered in a recent work by Semikoz and Sokoloff as a mechanism for the generation of large-scale magnetic fields in the Early Universe as a consequence of the neutrino-plasma interactions, and allows us to establish contact with a specific application in a well defined context, with a broader scope and from a very different point of view.

We study the electromagnetic vertex function of a neutrino that propagates in an electron background in the presence of a static magnetic field. The structure of the vertex function under the stated conditions is determined and it is written down in terms of a minimal and complete set of tensors. The one-loop expressions for all the form factors is given, up to terms that are linear in the magnetic field, and the approximate integral formulas that hold in the long wavelength limit are obtained. We discuss the physical interpretation of some of the form factors and their relation with the concept of the neutrino induced charge. The neutrino acquires a longitudinal and a transverse charge, due to the fact that the form factors depend on the transverse and longitudinal components of the photon momentum independently. We compute those form factors explicitly in various limiting cases and find that the longitudinal and transverse charge are the same for the case of a non-relativistic electron gas, but not otherwise.

Low energy weak interactions calculations with fermions frequently involve a superposition of quartic products of Dirac spinors, in which the order of the spinors is not the same in all the contributing terms. A common trick that is used to bring them to a uniform ordering is the Fierz transformation. We show that the standard Fierz rearrangement formula quoted in textbooks is one element of a class of transformations of a quartic product amplitude, under which the spinors are rearranged with different orderings and, in the general case, some or all of the spinors are transformed to their Lorentz-invariant complex conjugate form. We give a pedagogical derivation of the explicit forms of all such transformation matrices. In addition to the usual Lorentz scalar quartic products, we consider pseudoscalar ones as well. Such manipulations and formulas are useful, in particular, when some of the fermions involved are Majorana particles.

This work is concerned with the propagation of electromagnetic waves in isotropic chiral media and with the effects produced by a plane boundary between two such media. In analogy with the phenomena of reflection and refraction of plane electromagnetic waves in ordinary dielectrics, the kinematical and dynamical aspects of these phenomena are studied, such as the intensity of the various wave components and the change in the polarization of the wave as it crosses the boundary. As a prerequisite of this, we show that the plane wave solution must be written as a suitable superposition of the circularly amplitudes on both sides of the interface, we elucidate which is the appropriate set of conditions that the solution must satisfy at the boundary, and we set down the minimal, and complete, set of equations that must be solved for the coefficient amplitudes in order to satisfy the boundary conditions. The equations are solved explicitly for some particular cases and configurations (e.g., normal incidence), the salient features of those solutions are analyzed in some detail, and the general solution to the equations is given as well.

After explaining the reasons that make this happen, we consider the calculation of the rates for the process of the form \ell_a + \ell_b -> \ell_a + \ell_c, and its conjugate \bar\ell_a + \bar\ell_b -> \bar\ell_a + \bar\ell_c, where \ell_a, \ell_b and \ell_c denote charged leptons of different flavors. In the context of the Standard Model with Majorana neutrinos, we show that the difference in the rates depends on such phases. Our calculations illustrate in detail the mechanics that operate behind the scene, and set the stage for carrying out the analogous, more complicated (as we explain), calculations for other processes such as μ-> eee+ and its conjugate.

A convenient and general decomposition of the photon self-energy in a magnetized, but otherwise isotropic, medium is given in terms of the minimal set of tensors consistent with the transversality condition. As we show, the self-energy in such a medium is completely parametrized in terms of nine independent form factors, and they reduce to three in the long wavelength limit. We consider in detail an electron gas with a background magnetic field, and using finite temperature field theory methods, we obtain the one-loop formulas for the form factors, which are exact to all orders in the magnetic field. Explicit results are derived for a variety of physical conditions. In the appropriate limits, we recover the well-known semi-classical results for the photon dispersion relations and the Faraday effect. In more general cases, where the semi-classical treatment or the linear approximation (weak field limit) are not applicable, our formulas provide a consistent and systematic way for computing the self-energy form factors and, from them, the photon dispersion relations.

We calculate the momentum-dependent part of the matter-induced gravitational couplings of the neutrinos under such conditions, which arise at order $g^2/M^4_W$, and determine their contribution to the neutrino dispersion relation in the presence of a gravitational potential $φ^{\mathrm{ext}}$. These new contributions vanish for the muon and tau neutrinos. For electron neutrinos with momentum $K$, they are of the order of the usual Wolfenstein term times the factor $(K^2/M^2_W)φ^{\mathrm{ext}}$, for high energy neutrinos. In environments where the gravitational potential is substantial, such as those in the vicinity of Active Galactic Nuclei, they could be the dominant term in the neutrino dispersion relation. They must also be taken into account in the analysis of possible violations of the Equivalence Principle in the neutrino sector, in experimental settings involving high energy neutrinos traveling through a matter background.

In a medium that contains a neutrino background in addition to the matter particles, the neutrinos contribute to the photon self-energy as a result of the effective electromagnetic vertex that they acquire in the presence of matter. We calculate the contribution to the photon self-energy in a dense plasma, due to the presence of a gas of charged particles, or neutrinos, that moves as a whole relative to the plasma. General formulas for the transverse and longitudinal components of the photon polarization tensor are obtained in terms of the momentum distribution functions of the particles in the medium, and explicit results are given for various limiting cases of practical interest. The formulas are used to study the electromagnetic properties of a plasma that contains a beam of neutrinos. The transverse and longitudinal photon dispersion relations are studied in some detail. Our results do not support the idea that neutrino streaming instabilities can develop in such a system. We also indicate how the phenomenon of optical activity of the neutrino gas is modified due to the velocity of the neutrino background relative to the plasma. The general approach and results can be adapted to similar problems involving relativistic plasmas and high-temperature gauge theories in other environments.

We derive the evolution equation for this case and discuss some of the physical consequences in environments such as a supernova. For small values of the square mass difference the resonance for neutrinos and antineutrinos occur within regions which are close. In that case, the resonance condition becomes independent of the vacuum parameters and is approximately the same for both.

The effect exists even for massless, chiral neutrinos, where no physics beyond the standard model needs to be assumed.

Abstract:
We compare the use of the Coulomb gauge in finite temperature QED with a recently proposed prescription for covariant gauges, in which only the transverse photon degrees of freedom are thermalized. Using the Landau rule as a guide, we clarify the relation between the retarded electron self-energy and the elements of the self-energy matrix in the real-time formulation of . Using the Landau rule as a guide, we clarify the relation between the retarded electron self-energy and the elements of the self-energy matrix in the real-time formulation of . The general results are illustrated by means of the one-loop expressions for the electron self-energy in a QED plasma.

Abstract:
We use the method of finite temperature field theory to examine the propagation of mixed neutrinos through dense media, putting the emphasis in those situations in which the neutrinos themselves are in the background. We use the method of finite temperature field theory to examine the propagation of mixed neutrinos through dense media, putting the emphasis in those situations in which the neutrinos themselves are in the background. The evolution equation for the flavor amplitudes is deduced, and the expressions for the corresponding hamiltonian matrix are given explicitly. We find that, in order to include the nonlinear effects due to the $ν$-$ν$ interactions, the neutrino propagator that must be used in the calculation of the neutrino self-energy diagrams that contain neutrinos in the internal lines is the propagator for the neutrino modes in the medium instead of the thermal free-field propagator. We also show how the absorptive contributions are included in terms of a non-hermitian part of the hamiltonian matrix, which we indicate how it is calculated. Our treatment provides a consistent generalization of a method that has been successfully applied to the study of neutrino oscillations in matter.

Thermal Self-Energies at Zero Momentum
Authors:

Abstract:
In general the zero momentum limit of thermal self-energies calculated in perturbation theory depends on the order in which the time and the space components of the momentum are taken to zero. We show that this is an artifact of the perturbative calculation, and in fact the non-analyticity of the one-loop self-energy disappears when it is calculated with improved vertices and/or improved propaga…

We show that this is an artifact of the perturbative calculation, and in fact the non-analyticity of the one-loop self-energy disappears when it is calculated with improved vertices and/or improved propagators that incorporate the imaginary part of the self-energy.
