We derive the explicit embedding of the effective Kerr spacetimes, which are pertinent to the vanishing of static Love numbers, soft hair descriptions of Kerr black holes, and low-frequency scalar-Kerr scattering amplitudes, as solutions within N = 2 supergravity. These spacetimes exhibit a hidden $SL(2, R) \times U (1)$ or $SO(4, 2)$ symmetry resembling the so called subtracted geometries with $SL(2, R) \times SL(2, R)$ symmetry, which accurately represent the near-horizon geometry of Kerr black holes and, as we will argue most accurately represents the internal structure of the Kerr black hole. To quantify the differences among the effective Kerr spacetimes, we compare their physical quantities, internal structures, and geodesic equations. Although their thermodynamic properties, including entropy, match those of Kerr, our study uncovers significant differences in the interiors of these effective Kerr solutions. A careful examination of the internal structure of the spacetimes highlights the distinctions between various effective Kerr geometries and their quasinormal spectra.

We study young massive clusters (YMCs) in their embedded "infant" phase with $\sim0.\!^{\prime\prime}1$ ALMA, HST, and JWST observations targeting the central starburst ring in NGC 3351, a nearby Milky Way analog galaxy. Our new ALMA data reveal 18 bright and compact (sub-)millimeter continuum sources, of which 8 have counterparts in JWST images and only 6 have counterparts in HST images. Based on the ALMA continuum and molecular line data, as well as ancillary measurements for the HST and JWST counterparts, we identify 14 sources as infant star clusters with high stellar and/or gas masses (${\sim}10^5\;\mathrm{M_\odot}$), small radii (${\lesssim}\,5\;\mathrm{pc}$), large escape velocities ($6{-}10\;\mathrm{km/s}$), and short free-fall times ($0.5{-}1\;\mathrm{Myr}$). Their multiwavelength properties motivate us to divide them into four categories, likely corresponding to four evolutionary stages from starless clumps to exposed HII region-cluster complexes. Leveraging age estimates for HST-identified clusters in the same region, we infer an evolutionary timeline going from $\sim$1-2 Myr before cluster formation as starless clumps, to $\sim$4-6 Myr after as exposed HII region-cluster complexes. Finally, we show that the YMCs make up a substantial fraction of recent star formation across the ring, exhibit an non-uniform azimuthal distribution without a very coherent evolutionary trend along the ring, and are capable of driving large-scale gas outflows.

Abstract:
While static Love number vanish identically for Kerr black holes, we show that the corresponding dynamical tidal coefficients are generically non-zero and exhibit logarithmic behavior. The computational method employs a related but simpler scheme consistent with CFT descriptions, low-frequency regimes and post-Newtonian results. These coefficients are illustrated with a numerical examples.

Motivated by this, we explore magnetospheric models and black hole jet emissions in MOdified Gravity (MOG) scenarios. Specifically, we construct new power emitting magnetospheres in a Kerr-MOG background which are found to depend non-trivially on the MOG deformation parameter. This may allow for high-precision tests of GR. In addition, a complete set of analytic solutions for vacuum magnetic field configurations around static MOG black holes are explicitly derived, and found to comprise exclusively Heun polynomials.

In this paper, we examine hidden conformal symmetry of black rings and black strings solutions, thus demonstrating that the presence of hidden conformal symmetry is not linked to the separability of the KG-equation (or the existence of a Killing-Yano tensor). Further, we will argue that these classes of non-extremal black holes have a dual 2D CFT. New revised monodromy techniques are developed to encompass all the cases we consider.

A primary new capability of JWST is the ability to penetrate the dust in star forming galaxies to identify and study the properties of young star clusters that remain embedded in dust and gas. In this paper we combine new infrared images taken with JWST with our optical HST images of the star-bursting barred (Seyfert2) spiral galaxy NGC 1365. We find that this galaxy has the richest population of massive young clusters of any known galaxy within 30 Mpc, with $\sim$ 30 star clusters that are more massive than 10$^6$ Msolar and younger than 10 Myr. Sixteen of these clusters are newly discovered from our JWST observations. An examination of the optical images reveals that 4 of 30 ($\sim$13$\%$) are so deeply embedded that they cannot be seen in the I band (AV $\gt$ 10 mag), and that 11 of 30 ($\sim$37$\%$) are missing in the HST B band, so age and mass estimates from optical measurements alone are challenging. These numbers suggest that massive clusters in NGC 1365 remain obscured in the visible for $\sim$ 1.3 $\pm$ 0.7 Myr, and are either completely or partially obscured for $\sim$ 3.7 $\pm$ 1.1 Myr. We also use the JWST observations to gain new insights into the triggering of star cluster formation by the collision of gas and dust streamers with gas and dust in the bar. The JWST images reveal previously unknown structures (e.g., bridges and overshoot regions from stars that form in the bar) that help us better understand the orbital dynamics of barred galaxies and associated star-forming rings. Finally, we note that the excellent spatial resolution of the NIRCAM F200W filter provides a better way to separate barely resolved compact clusters from individual stars based on their sizes.

We present a study of the internal structure of 82 star clusters located at the outer regions of the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud using data of the VISCACHA Survey. Through the construction of the minimum spanning tree, which analyzes the relative position of stars within a given cluster, it was possible to characterize the internal structure and explore the fractal or subclustered distribution for each cluster. We computed the parameters m (which is the average length of the connected segments normalized by the area), s (which is the mean points separation in units of cluster radius), and Q (the ratio of these components). These parameters are useful to distinguish between radial, homogeneous, and substructured distributions of stars. The dependence of these parameters with the different characteristics of the clusters, such as their ages and spatial distribution, was also studied. We found that most of the studied clusters present a homogeneous stellar distribution or a distribution with a radial concentration. Our results are consistent with the models, suggesting that more dynamically evolved clusters seem to have larger Q values, confirming previous results from numerical simulations. There also seems to be a correlation between the internal structure of the clusters and their galactocentric distances, in the sense that for both galaxies, the more distant clusters have larger Q values. We also paid particular attention to the effects of contamination by non-member field stars and its consequences finding that field star decontamination is crucial for these kinds of studies.

The PHANGS collaboration has been building a reference dataset for the multi-scale, multi-phase study of star formation and the interstellar medium in nearby galaxies. With the successful launch and commissioning of JWST, we can now obtain high-resolution infrared imaging to probe the youngest stellar populations and dust emission on the scales of star clusters and molecular clouds ($\sim$5-50 pc). In Cycle 1, PHANGS is conducting an 8-band imaging survey from 2-21$μ$m of 19 nearby spiral galaxies. CO(2-1) mapping, optical integral field spectroscopy, and UV-optical imaging for all 19 galaxies have been obtained through large programs with ALMA, VLT/MUSE, and Hubble. PHANGS-JWST enables a full inventory of star formation, accurate measurement of the mass and age of star clusters, identification of the youngest embedded stellar populations, and characterization of the physical state of small dust grains. When combined with Hubble catalogs of $\sim$10,000 star clusters, MUSE spectroscopic mapping of $\sim$20,000 HII regions, and $\sim$12,000 ALMA-identified molecular clouds, it becomes possible to measure the timescales and efficiencies of the earliest phases of star formation and feedback, build an empirical model of the dependence of small dust grain properties on local ISM conditions, and test our understanding of how dust-reprocessed starlight traces star formation activity, all across a diversity of galactic environments. Here we describe the PHANGS-JWST Treasury survey, present the remarkable imaging obtained in the first few months of science operations, and provide context for the initial results presented in the first series of PHANGS-JWST publications.

The hidden conformal symmetry is realized in the form of $Vir_L \times Vir_R$ diffeomorphisms which act non-trivially on the black hole horizon. Semiclassical formulae are derived for the temperature and central charges of the dual CFT. Assuming the applicability of the Cardy formula, these CFT quantities precisely reproduce the macroscopic Bekenstein-Hawking area law. The first law of black hole mechanics, which relates the change of energy to the change of entropy and other conserved charges, has been the main motivation for probing the thermodynamic properties of black holes. In this work, we investigate the thermodynamics of Kerr Taub-NUT AdS black holes. We present geometric Komar definitions for the black hole charges, that by construction satisfy the Smarr formula. Further, by a scaling argument based on Euler's theorem, we establish the first law for the Kerr Taub-NUT AdS black holes. The corresponding first law includes variations in the cosmological constant, NUT charges and angular momenta. The key new ingredient in the construction are the independent variations of both angular momenta, the black hole and Misner string angular momenta. Employing the Brown-York quasilocal charge definitions we show that our expression for the mass and spin coincide with our generalized Komar expressions. We indicate the relevance of these results to the thermodynamics of rotating AdS black holes, including the proper choice of time-like Killing vector to produce the correct thermodynamic mass.

Aims: The purpose of this work is to study the properties of the spatial distribution of the young population in three nearby galaxies in order to better understand the first stages of star formation.
Methods: We used ACS/HST photometry and the "path-linkage criterion" in order to obtain a catalog of young stellar groups (YSGs) in the galaxy NGC 2403. We studied the internal distribution of stars in these YSGs using the Q parameter. We extended these analyses to the YSGs detected in in NGC 300 and NGC 253 our previous works. We built the young stars' density maps for these three galaxies. Through these maps, we were able to identify and study young stellar structures on larger scales.
Results: We found 573 YSGs in the galaxy NGC 2403, for which we derived their individual sizes, densities, luminosity function, and other fundamental characteristics. We find that the vast majority of the YSGs in NGC 2403, NGC 300 and NGC 253 present inner clumpings, following the same hierarchical behavior that we observed in the young stellar structures on larger scales in these galaxies. We derived values of the fractal dimension for these structures between ~ 1.5 and 1.6. These values are very similar to those obtained in other star forming galaxies and in the interstellar medium, suggesting that the star formation process is regulated by supersonic turbulence.

Nontrivial diffeomorphisms act on the horizon of a generic 4D black holes and create distinguishing features referred to as soft hair. Amongst these are a left-right pair of Virasoro algebras with associated charges that reproduce the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for Kerr black holes. In this paper we show that if one adds a negative cosmological constant, there is a similar set of infinitesimal diffeomorphisms that act non-trivially on the horizon. The algebra of these diffeomorphisms gives rise to a central charge. Adding a boundary counterterm, justified to achieve integrability, leads to well-defined central charges with cL = cR. The macroscopic area law for Kerr-AdS black holes follows from the assumption of a Cardy formula governing the black hole microstates.

We argue that the equations of motion of quantum field theories in curved backgrounds encode new fundamental black hole thermodynamic relations. We define new entropy variation relations. These `emerge' through the monodromies that capture the infinitesimal changes in the black hole background produced by the field excitations. This raises the possibility of new thermodynamic relations defined as independent sums involving entropies, temperatures and angular velocities defined at every black hole horizon. We present explicit results for the sum of all horizon entropy variations for general rotating black holes, both in asymptotically at and asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes in four and higher dimensions. The expressions are universal, and in most cases add up to zero. We also find that these thermodynamic summation relations apply in theories involving multi-charge black holes.

In this paper, we propose a method to calculate the exact Taylor series of the scattering matrix in general multiterminal tight-binding systems to arbitrary order N, which allows us to find the Taylor expansion of Landauer conductance in mesoscopic systems. The method is based on the recursive scattering matrix method (RSMM) that permits us to find the scattering matrix of a system from the scattering matrices of its subsystems. Following ideas of automatic differentiation, we determine expressions for the sum, product, inverse, and diagonalization of a matrix Taylor expansion, and use them into the RSMM to find Taylor series of scattering matrices. The method is validated by obtaining the transmission function of atomic chains with site defects and graphene nanoconstrictions. Finally, an analysis of convergence radius and error estimations of these Taylor expansions is presented.

The metric is stationary, asymptotically near horizon extremal Kerr (NHEK), and contains a localized massless strut along the symmetry axis between the black holes. In the deep infrared, it flows to two separate throats which we call "pierced-NHEK" geometries: each throat is NHEK pierced by a conical singularity. We find that in spite of the presence of the strut for the pierced-NHEK geometries the isometry group SL(2,R)xU(1) is restored. We find the physical parameters and entropy.

In particular, we focused our attention in its hierarchical clustering distributions and the properties of the smallest groups. We used multiband Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data from three fields covering more than half of NGC 247 to select the young population. We also performed a fractal analysis to determinate the clustering properties of this population. We build a stellar density map and the corresponding dendrograms corresponding to the galactic young population to detect large structures and draw their main characteristics. We detected 339 young star groups, for which we computed a mean radius of $\sim$ 60 pc and a maximum in the size distribution between 30 and 70 pc. We also obtained LF slopes with a bimodal distribution showing peaks at $\sim$ 0.1 and $\sim$ 0.2. We identified several candidates to HII regions which follow an excellent spatial correlation with the young groups found by the PLC. We observed that the young population are hierarchically organized, where the smaller and denser structures are within larger and less dense ones. We noticed that all these groups presented a fractal subclustering, following the hierarchical distribution observed in the corresponding stellar density map. For the large young structures observed in this map, we obtained a fractal dimension of $\sim$ 1.6-1.8 using the perimeter-area relation and the cumulative size distribution. These values are consistent with a scenario of hierarchical star formation.

We present a study of the young population in the starburst galaxy NGC 253. In particular, we focused our attention on searching young star groups, obtaining their main properties and studying their hierarchical organization. For this task, we used multiband images and their corresponding photometric data obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys of the Hubble Space Telescope (ACS/HST).
We have first derived the absorption affecting the different regions of the galaxy. Then, we applied an automatic and objective searching method over the corrected data in order to detect young star groups. We complemented this result with the construction of the stellar density map for the blue young population. A statistical procedure to decontaminate the photometric diagrams from field stars was applied over the detected groups and we estimated their fundamental parameters.
As a result, we built a catalog of 875 new identified young groups with their main characteristics, including coordinates, sizes, estimated number of members, stellar densities, luminosity function (LF) slopes and galactocentric distances. We observed these groups delineate different structures of the galaxy, and they are the last step in the hierarchical way in which the young population is organized. From their size distribution, we found they have typical radius of $\sim 40 - 50$ pc. These values are consistent with those ones found in others nearby galaxies. We estimated a mean value of the LF slope of 0.21 and an average density of 0.0006 stars/pc$^3$ for the identified young groups taking into account stars earlier than B6.

Black hole (BH) shadows in dynamical binary BHs (BBHs) have been produced via ray-tracing techniques on top of expensive fully non-linear numerical relativity simulations. We show that the main features of these shadows are captured by a simple quasi-static resolution of the photon orbits on top of the static double-Schwarzschild family of solutions. Whilst the latter contains a conical singularity between the line separating the two BHs, this produces no major observable effect on the shadows, by virtue of the underlying cylindrical symmetry of the problem. This symmetry is also present in the stationary BBH solution comprising two Kerr BHs separated by a massless strut. We produce images of the shadows of the exact stationary co-rotating (even) and counter-rotating (odd) stationary BBH configurations. This allow us to assess the impact on the binary shadows of the intrinsic spin of the BHs, contrasting it with the effect of the orbital angular momentum.

A new solution of four-dimensional vacuum General Relativity is presented. It describes the near horizon region of the extreme (maximally spinning) binary black hole system with two identical extreme Kerr black holes held in equilibrium by a massless strut. This is the first example of a non-supersymmetric, asymptotically flat near horizon extreme binary black hole geometry of two uncharged black holes. The black holes are co-rotating, and the solution is uniquely specified by the mass. The binary extreme system has finite entropy. The distance between the black holes is fixed, but there is a zero-distance limit where the objects collapse into one. This limiting geometry corresponds to the near horizon extreme Kerr (NHEK) black hole.

There is an exciting prospect of obtaining the shadow of astrophysical black holes (BHs) in the near future with the Event Horizon Telescope. As a matter of principle, this justifies asking how much one can learn about the BH horizon itself from such a measurement. Since the shadow is determined by a set of special photon orbits, rather than horizon properties, it is possible that different horizon geometries yield similar shadows. One may then ask how sensitive is the shadow to details of the horizon geometry? As a case study, we consider the double Schwarzschild BH and analyse the impact on the lensing and shadows of the conical singularity that holds the two BHs in equilibrium -- herein taken to be a strut along the symmetry axis in between the two BHs. Whereas the conical singularity induces a discontinuity of the scattering angle of photons, clearly visible in the lensing patterns along the direction of the strut's location, it produces no observable effect on the shadows, whose edges remain everywhere smooth. The latter feature is illustrated by examples including both equal and unequal mass BHs. This smoothness contrasts with the intrinsic geometry of the (spatial sections of the) horizon of these BHs, which is not smooth, and provides a sharp example on how BH shadows are insensitive to some horizon geometry details. This observation, moreover, suggests that for the study of their shadows, this static double BH system may be an informative proxy for a dynamical binary.

Blandford and Znajek discovered a process by which a spinning black hole can transfer rotational energy to a plasma, offering a mechanism for energy and jet emissions from quasars. Here we describe a version of this mechanism that operates with only vacuum electromagnetic fields outside the black hole. The setting, which is not astrophysically realistic, involves either a cylindrical black hole or one that lives in 2+1 spacetime dimensions, and the field is given in simple, closed form for a wide class of metrics. For asymptotically Anti-de Sitter black holes in 2+1 dimensions the holographic dual of this mechanism is the transfer of angular momentum and energy, via a resistive coupling, from a rotating thermal state containing an electric field to an external charge density rotating more slowly than the thermal state. In particular, the entropy increase of the thermal state due to Joule heating matches the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy increase of the black hole.

Ambient magnetic fields are thought to play a critical role in black hole jet formation. Furthermore, dual electromagnetic signals could be produced during the inspiral and merger of binary black hole systems. However, due to the absence of theoretical models, the physical status of binary black hole arrays with dual jets has remained unresolved. In this paper, we derive the exact solution for the electromagnetic field occurring when a static, axisymmetric binary black hole system is placed in the field of two magnetic or electric monopoles. As a by-product of this derivation, we also find the exact solution of the binary black hole configuration in a magnetic or electric dipole field. The presence of conical singularities in the static black hole binaries represent the gravitational attraction between the black holes that also drag the external two monopole field. We show that these off-balance configurations generate no energy outflows.

We report on the unveiling of the nature of the unidentified X-ray source 3XMM J005450.3-373849 as a Seyfert-2 galaxy located behind the spiral galaxy NGC 300 using Hubble Space Telescope data, new spectroscopic Gemini observations and available XMM-Newton and Chandra data. We show that the X-ray source is positionally coincident with an extended optical source, composed by a marginally resolved nucleus/bulge, surrounded by an elliptical disc-like feature and two symmetrical outer rings. The optical spectrum is typical of a Seyfert-2 galaxy redshifted to z=0.222 +/- 0.001, which confirms that the source is not physically related to NGC 300. At this redshift the source would be located at 909+/-4 Mpc (comoving distance in the standard model). The X-ray spectra of the source are well-fitted by an absorbed power-law model. By tying $N_\mathrm{H}$ between the six available spectra, we found a variable index $Γ$ running from ~2 in 2000-2001 years, to 1.4-1.6 in the 2005-2014 period. Alternatively, by tying $Γ$, we found variable absorption columns of N_H ~ 0.34 x $10^{-22}$ cm$^{-2}$ in 2000-2001 years, and 0.54-0.75 x $10^{-22}$ cm$^{-2}$ in the 2005-2014 period. Although we cannot distinguish between an spectral or absorption origin, from the derived unabsorbed X-ray fluxes, we are able to assure the presence of long-term X-ray variability. Furthermore, the unabsorbed X-ray luminosities of 0.8-2 x 10$^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ derived in the X-ray band are in agreement with a weakly obscured Seyfert-2 AGN at $z \approx 0.22$.

While the linear behavior of gravity in braneworld models is well understood, much less is known about full non-linear gravitational effects. Even when they agree at the linear level, these could be expected to distinguish braneworlds from a lower-dimensional theory with no brane. Black holes are a good testing ground for such studies, as they are nonlinear solutions that would be expected to reflect the background geometry. In particular, we assess the role of black hole quasinormal modes in gravitational experiments devised to be sensitive to the existence of the brane, in a lower-dimensional setting where we have analytical control. We compute quasinormal modes of brane-localized black holes and find that they follow the entropy of the corresponding black hole. This observation allows us to conclude that, surprisingly, the scattering problem we consider, at least in some regimes, does not distinguish between non-linear gravitational effects of black holes in AdS space with a brane and black holes in a spacetime of one lower dimension.

The solutions are exact in flat spacetime and approximate in Kerr spacetime. The compact object produces a conical jet whose properties carry information about its nature. For example, the jet from a star is surrounded by a current sheet, while that of a black hole is smooth. We compute an effective resistance in each case and compare to the canonical values used in circuit models of energy extraction. These solutions illustrate all of the basic features of the Blandford-Znajek process for energy extraction and jet formation in a clean setting.

We show that this behavior can be derived analytically from the assumption of fixed functional dependence of current and field line rotation on magnetic flux. We present new exact solutions of Force-Free Electrodynamics (FFE) in the Near-Horizon region of an Extremal Kerr black hole (NHEK) and offer a complete classification of the subset that form highest-weight representations of the spacetime's SL(2,R) x U(1) isometry group. For a natural choice of spacetime embedding of this isometry group, the SL(2,R) highest-weight conditions lead to stationary solutions with non-trivial angular dependence, as well as axisymmetry when the U(1)-charge vanishes. In addition, we unveil a hidden SL(2,C) symmetry of the equations of FFE that stems from the action of a complex automorphism group, and enables us to generate an SL(2,C) family of (generically time-dependent) solutions. We then obtain still more general solutions with less symmetry by appealing to a principle of linear superposition that holds for solutions with collinear currents and allows us to resum the highest-weight primaries and their SL(2,R)-descendants.

We study three-dimensional consistent truncations of type IIB supergravity which admit warped AdS$_3$ solutions. These theories contain subsectors that have no bulk dynamics. We show that the symplectic form for these theories, when restricted to the non-dynamical subsectors, equals the symplectic form for pure Einstein gravity in AdS$_3$. Consequently, for each consistent choice of boundary conditions in AdS$_3$, we can define a consistent phase space in warped AdS$_3$ with identical conserved charges. This way, we easily obtain a Virasoro $\times$ Virasoro asymptotic symmetry algebra in warped AdS$_3$; two different types of Virasoro $\times$ Kač-Moody symmetries are also consistent alternatives.
Next, we study the phase space of these theories when propagating modes are included. We show that, as long as one can define a conserved symplectic form without introducing instabilities, the Virasoro $\times$ Virasoro asymptotic symmetries can be extended to the entire (linearized) phase space. This implies that, at least at semi-classical level, consistent theories of gravity in warped AdS$_3$ are described by a two-dimensional conformal field theory, as long as stability is not an issue.

We used this material to derive the photometric, spectroscopic and kinematic properties of the brightest (V < 16) stars in the region. The VI deep photometry on the other end, helped us to unravel the lower main sequence of a few, possibly physical, star groups in the area.
Our analysis confirmed previous suggestions that the extinction toward this line of sight follows the normal law (Rv = 3.1). We could recognize B-type stars spread in distance from a few hundred pc to at least 2 kpc. We found two young groups (age ~ 3 Myr) located respectively at about 2.3 and 3.2 kpc from the Sun. They are characterized by a significant variable extinction (E(B-V) ranging from 0.28 to 0.45 mag), and host a significant pre-main sequence population. We computed the initial mass functions for these groups and obtained slopes Gamma from -0.94 to -1.02 (e_Gamma = 0.3), in a scale where the classical Salpeter law is -1.35. We estimated the total mass of both main stellar groups in ~ 1100$ and ~ 500$ Mo, respectively. Our kinematic analysis indicated that both groups of stars deviate from the standard rotation curve of the Milky Way, in line with literature results for this specific Galactic direction.
Finally, along the same line of sight we identified a third group of early-type stars located at ~ 8 kpc from the Sun. This group might be located in the far side of the Sagittarius-Carina spiral arm.

To this end we propose a "first law" for the inner Cauchy horizons of black holes. The validity of this formula, which seems to be universal, was explicitly checked in all cases.

It can also be obtained by dimensionally reducing six-dimensional vacuum gravity on a circle. Our new approach uses GL(4, R) integrability structure of the theory inherited from six-dimensional vacuum gravity. Our approach is also general enough to potentially generate dipole black objects carrying multiple rotations as well as more exotic multi-horizon configurations.

These asymptotically flat configurations are found for a specific metric ansatz and can be viewed as higher dimensional counterparts of the $d=5$ static black rings, dirings and black Saturn. Similar to that case, they are supported against collapse by conical singularities. The issue of rotating generalizations of these solutions is also considered.

On the black hole species (by means of natural selection)

Recently our understanding of black holes in D-spacetime dimensions, as solutions of the Einstein equation, has advanced greatly. Besides the well established spherical black hole we have now explicitly found other species of topologies of the event horizons. Whether in asymptotically flat, AntideSitter or deSitter spaces, the different species are really non-unique when D > 4. An example of this are the black rings. Another issue in higher dimensions that is not fully understood is the struggle for existence of regular black hole solutions. However, we managed to observe a selection rule for regular solutions of thin black rings: they have to be balanced i.e. in vacuum, a neutral asymptotically flat black ring incorporates a balance between the centrifugal repulsion and the tension. The equilibrium condition seems to be equivalent to the condition to guarantee regularity on the geometry of the black ring solution. We will review the tree of species of black holes and present new results on exotic black holes with charges.

We study the properties of 5-dimensional black objects by using the renormalized boundary stress-tensor for locally asymptotically flat spacetimes. This provides a more refined form of the quasilocal formalism which is useful for a holographic interpretation of asymptotically flat gravity. We apply this technique to examine the thermodynamic properties of black holes, black rings, and black strings. The advantage of using this method is that we can go beyond the `thin ring' approximation and compute the boundary stress tensor for any general (thin or fat) black ring solution. We argue that the boundary stress tensor encodes the necessarily information to distinguish between black objects with different horizon topologies in the bulk. We also study in detail the susy black ring and clarify the relation between the asymptotic charges and the charges defined at the horizon. Furthermore, we obtain the balance condition for `thin' dipole black rings.

We construct solutions for thin black rings in Anti-deSitter and deSitter spacetimes using approximate methods. Black rings in AdS exist with arbitrarily large radius and satisfy a bound |J| \leq LM, which they saturate as their radius becomes infinitely large. For angular momentum near the maximum, they have larger area than rotating AdS black holes. Thin black rings also exist in deSitter space, with rotation velocities varying between zero and a maximum, and with a radius that is always strictly below the Hubble radius. Our general analysis allows us to include black Saturns as well, which we discuss briefly. We present a simple physical argument why supersymmetric AdS black rings must not be expected: they do not possess the necessary pressure to balance the AdS potential. We discuss the possible existence or absence of `large AdS black rings' and their implications for a dual hydrodynamic description. An analysis of the physical properties of rotating AdS black holes is also included.

We present detailed physics analyses of two different 4+1-dimensional asymptotically flat vacuum black hole solutions with spin in two independent planes: the doubly spinning black ring and the bicycling black ring system ("bi-rings"). The latter is a new solution describing two concentric orthogonal rotating black rings which we construct using the inverse scattering technique. We focus particularly on extremal zero-temperature limits of the solutions. We construct the phase diagram of currently known zero-temperature vacuum black hole solutions with a single event horizon, and discuss the non-uniqueness introduced by more exotic black hole configurations such as bi-rings and multi-ring saturns.
