Origami-based structures play an important role in the realization of deployable mechanisms and unique mechanical properties via programmable deformation by folding. Among origami-based structures, tessellation by the coupling of origami tubes enriches the variations in geometry and mechanical properties. However, thickness accommodation is a critical problem in engineering applications involving the coupling of thick origami tubes. To solve this problem, this study proposes the coupling of thick Miura-ori tubes along the creases for facile fabrication, which sustains the one-degree-of-freedom (DOF) motion of thick Miura-ori tubes owing to the local mirror symmetry around the coupling interfaces. Furthermore, the coupling method contributes to the high stiffness of the coupled Miura-ori tubes, as evidenced by the wide gap in the eigenvalues between the one-DOF mode and the elastic modes obtained by the bar-and-hinge models. Finally, meter-scale coupled Miura-ori tubes were fabricated to demonstrate one-DOF motion and high stiffness. The findings of this study enable the rapid construction of structures by one-DOF motion and enhancement of transportability via flat-foldability.

Under pressure, it exhibits H-bond disordering, tunneling, and finally, H-bond symmetrization at ~18 GPa. This study investigates these 300 K pressure-induced state changes in $δ$ with ab initio calculations. H-bond disordering in $δ$ was modeled using supercell multi-configuration quasiharmonic calculations. We examine: (a) energy barriers for proton jumps, (b) the pressure dependence of phonon frequencies, (c) 300 K compressibility, (d) neutron diffraction pattern anomalies, and (e) compare ab initio bond lengths with measured ones. Such thorough and systematic comparisons indicate that: (a) proton "disorder" has a restricted meaning when applied to $δ$. Nevertheless, H-bonds are disordered between 0 and 8 GPa, and a gradual change in H-bond configuration results in enhanced compressibility. (b) several structural and vibrational anomalies at ~8 GPa are consistent with the disappearance of a particular (HOC-12) H-bond configuration and its change into another one (HOC-11*). (c) between 8-11 GPa, H-bond configuration (HOC-11*) is generally ordered, at least in short- to mid-range scale. (d) between 11.5-18 GPa, H-bond lengths approach a critical value that impedes compression, resulting in decreased compressibility. In this pressure range, especially approaching H-bond symmetrization at ~18 GPa, anharmonicity and tunneling should play an essential role in the proton dynamics. Further simulations accounting for these effects are desirable to clarify the protons' state in this pressure range.

This uncommon type of prediction is achieved by carrying out a high-throughput sampling of atomic configurations in a 56-atom supercell followed by a Boltzmann ensemble statistics calculation. Mg$_2$GeO$_4$ is a low-pressure analog of $I\bar{4}2d$-type Mg$_2$SiO$_4$, a predicted major planet-forming phase of super-Earths' mantles. Therefore, a similar ODT is anticipated in $I\bar{4}2d$-type Mg$_2$SiO$_4$ as well, which should impact the internal structure and dynamics of these planets. The prediction of this Th$_3$P$_4$-type phase in Mg$_2$GeO$_4$ enhances further the relationship between the crystal structures of Earth/planet-forming silicates and oxides at extreme pressures and those of rare-earth sesquisulfides at low pressures.

Fe-bearing MgO [(Mg$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)O] is considered a major constituent of terrestrial exoplanets. Crystallizing in the B1 structure in the Earth's lower mantle, (Mg$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)O undergoes a high-spin ($S=2$) to low-spin ($S=0$) transition at $\sim$45 GPa, accompanied by anomalous changes of this mineral's physical properties, while the intermediate-spin ($S=1$) state has not been observed. In this work, we investigate (Mg$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)O ($x \leq 0.25$) up to $1.8$ TPa via first-principles calculations. Our calculations indicate that (Mg$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)O undergoes a simultaneous structural and spin transition at $\sim$0.6 TPa, from the B1 phase low-spin state to the B2 phase intermediate-spin state, with Fe's total electron spin $S$ re-emerging from $0$ to $1$ at ultrahigh pressure. Upon further compression, an intermediate-to-low spin transition occurs in the B2 phase. Depending on the Fe concentration ($x$), metal$-$insulator transition and rhombohedral distortions can also occur in the B2 phase. These results suggest that Fe and spin transition may affect planetary interiors over a vast pressure range.

We present a new method of deriving shapes of entanglement wedges directly from CFT calculations. We point out that a reduced density matrix in holographic CFTs possesses a sharp wedge structure such that inside the wedge we can distinguish two local excitations, while outside we cannot. We can determine this wedge, which we call a CFT wedge, by computing a distinguishability measure. We find that CFT wedges defined by the fidelity or Bures distance as a distinguishability measure, coincide perfectly with shadows of entanglement wedges in AdS/CFT. We confirm this agreement between CFT wedges and entanglement wedges for two dimensional holographic CFTs where the subsystem is chosen to be an interval or double intervals, as well as higher dimensional CFTs with a round ball subsystem. On the other hand if we consider a free scalar CFT, we find that there are no sharp CFT wedges. This shows that sharp entanglement wedges emerge only for holographic CFTs owing to the large N factorization. We also generalize our analysis to a time-dependent example and to a holographic boundary conformal field theory (AdS/BCFT). Finally we study other distinguishability measures to define CFT wedges. We observe that some of measures lead to CFT wedges which slightly deviate from the entanglement wedges in AdS/CFT and we give a heuristic explanation for this. This paper is an extended version of our earlier letter arXiv:1908.09939 and includes various new observations and examples.

We find that in holographic CFTs, the results coincide with the known results of pure state local operator quenches. On the other hand, we obtain new behaviors in the Dirac fermion CFT, which are missing in the pure state counterpart. By combining our results with the inequalities known for von-Neumann entropy, we obtain an upper bound of the pure state local operator quenches in the Dirac fermion CFT. We also explore predictions about the behaviors of entanglement entropy for more general mixed states.

We present a new method of deriving the geometry of entanglement wedges in holography directly from conformal field theories (CFTs). We analyze an information metric called the Bures metric of reduced density matrices for locally excited states. This measures distinguishability of states with different points excited. For a subsystem given by an interval, we precisely reproduce the expected entanglement wedge for two dimensional holographic CFTs from the Bures metric, which turns out to be proportional to the AdS metric on a time slice. On the other hand, for free scalar CFTs, we do not find any sharp structures like entanglement wedges. When a subsystem consists of disconnected two intervals we manage to reproduce the expected entanglement wedge from holographic CFTs with correct phase transitions, up to a very small error, from a quantity alternative to the Bures metric.

We then discuss a series of holographic duals to the optimized correlation measures, finding a novel geometrical measure of correlation, the \textit{entanglement wedge mutual information} (EWMI), as the dual of the $Q$-correlation. We prove that the EWMI satisfies the properties of the $Q$-correlation as well as the strong superadditivity, and that it can become larger than the entanglement measures. These results imply that both of the EWCS and the EWMI capture more than quantum entanglement in the entanglement wedge, which enlightens a potential role of classical correlations in holography.

Unsupervised learning can discover various unseen diseases, relying on large-scale unannotated medical images of healthy subjects. Towards this, unsupervised methods reconstruct a single medical image to detect outliers either in the learned feature space or from high reconstruction loss. However, without considering continuity between multiple adjacent slices, they cannot directly discriminate diseases composed of the accumulation of subtle anatomical anomalies, such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Moreover, no study has shown how unsupervised anomaly detection is associated with disease stages. Therefore, we propose a two-step method using Generative Adversarial Network-based multiple adjacent brain MRI slice reconstruction to detect AD at various stages: (Reconstruction) Wasserstein loss with Gradient Penalty + L1 loss---trained on 3 healthy slices to reconstruct the next 3 ones---reconstructs unseen healthy/AD cases; (Diagnosis) Average/Maximum loss (e.g., L2 loss) per scan discriminates them, comparing the reconstructed/ground truth images. The results show that we can reliably detect AD at a very early stage with Area Under the Curve (AUC) 0.780 while also detecting AD at a late stage much more accurately with AUC 0.917; since our method is fully unsupervised, it should also discover and alert any anomalies including rare disease.

Accurate Computer-Assisted Diagnosis, relying on large-scale annotated pathological images, can alleviate the risk of overlooking the diagnosis. Unfortunately, in medical imaging, most available datasets are small/fragmented. To tackle this, as a Data Augmentation (DA) method, 3D conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) can synthesize desired realistic/diverse 3D images as additional training data. However, no 3D conditional GAN-based DA approach exists for general bounding box-based 3D object detection, while it can locate disease areas with physicians' minimum annotation cost, unlike rigorous 3D segmentation. Moreover, since lesions vary in position/size/attenuation, further GAN-based DA performance requires multiple conditions. Therefore, we propose 3D Multi-Conditional GAN (MCGAN) to generate realistic/diverse 32 X 32 X 32 nodules placed naturally on lung Computed Tomography images to boost sensitivity in 3D object detection. Our MCGAN adopts two discriminators for conditioning: the context discriminator learns to classify real vs synthetic nodule/surrounding pairs with noise box-centered surroundings; the nodule discriminator attempts to classify real vs synthetic nodules with size/attenuation conditions. The results show that 3D Convolutional Neural Network-based detection can achieve higher sensitivity under any nodule size/attenuation at fixed False Positive rates and overcome the medical data paucity with the MCGAN-generated realistic nodules---even expert physicians fail to distinguish them from the real ones in Visual Turing Test.

In both of these models, we find that the EoP becomes a non-monotonic function of the distance between $A$ and $B$ when the total number of lattice sites is small. When it is large, the EoP becomes monotonic and shows a plateau-like behavior. Moreover, we show that the original reflection symmetry which exchanges $A$ and $B$ can get broken in optimally purified systems. In the Ising model, we find this symmetry breaking in the ferromagnetic phase. We provide an interpretation of our results in terms of the interplay between classical and quantum correlations.

Relative entropy of entanglement (REE) is an entanglement measure of bipartite mixed states, defined by the minimum of the relative entropy $S(ρ_{AB}|| σ_{AB})$ between a given mixed state $ρ_{AB}$ and an arbitrary separable state $σ_{AB}$. The REE is always bounded by the mutual information $I_{AB}=S(ρ_{AB} || ρ_{A}\otimes ρ_{B})$ because the latter measures not only quantum entanglement but also classical correlations. In this paper we address the question of to what extent REE can be small compared to the mutual information in conformal field theories (CFTs). For this purpose, we perturbatively compute the relative entropy between the vacuum reduced density matrix $ρ^{0}_{AB}$ on disjoint subsystems $A \cup B$ and arbitrarily separable state $σ_{AB}$ in the limit where two subsystems A and B are well separated, then minimize the relative entropy with respect to the separable states. We argue that the result highly depends on the spectrum of CFT on the subsystems. When we have a few low energy spectrum of operators as in the case where the subsystems consist of a finite number of spins in spin chain models, the REE is considerably smaller than the mutual information. However in general our perturbative scheme breaks down, and the REE can be as large as the mutual information.

We introduce a new information-theoretic measure of multipartite quantum/classical correlations $Δ_P$, by generalizing the entanglement of purification to multipartite states. We provide proofs of its various properties, focusing on several entropic inequalities, in generic quantum systems. In particular, it turns out that the multipartite entanglement of purification gives an upper bound on multipartite mutual information, which is a generalization of quantum mutual information in the spirit of relative entropy. After that, motivated by a tensor network description of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we also define a holographic dual of multipartite entanglement of purification $Δ_W$, as a sum of minimal areas of codimension-2 surfaces which divide the entanglement wedge into multi-pieces. We prove that this geometrical quantity satisfies all properties we proved for the multipartite entanglement of purification. These agreements strongly support the $Δ_{P}=Δ_{W}$ conjecture. We also show that the multipartite entanglement of purification gives an upper bound on multipartite squashed entanglement, which is a promising measure of multipartite quantum entanglement. We discuss potential saturation of multipartite squashed entanglement onto multipartite mutual information in holographic CFTs and its applications.

This quantity measures correlations between two subsystems and is reduced to the entanglement entropy when the total system is pure. We obtain explicit numerical values by assuming minimal gaussian wave functionals for the purified states. We find that when the distance between the subsystems is large, the EoP behaves like the mutual information. However, when the distance is small, the EoP shows a characteristic behavior which qualitatively agrees with the conjectured holographic computation and which is different from that of the mutual information. The highest pressure form of the major Earth-forming mantle silicate is MgSiO3 post-perovskite (PPv). Understanding the fate of PPv at TPa pressures is the first step for understanding the mineralogy of super-Earths-type exoplanets, arguably the most interesting for their similarities with Earth. Modeling their internal structure requires knowledge of stable mineral phases, their properties under compression, and major element abundances. Several studies of PPv under extreme pressures support the notion that a sequence of pressure induced dissociation transitions produce the elementary oxides SiO2 and MgO as the ultimate aggregation form at ~3 TPa. However, none of these studies have addressed the problem of mantle composition, particularly major element abundances usually expressed in terms of three main variables, the Mg/Si and Fe/Si ratios and the Mg#, as in the Earth. Here we show that the critical compositional parameter, the Mg/Si ratio, whose value in the Earth's mantle is still debated, is a vital ingredient for modeling phase transitions and internal structure of super-Earth mantles. Specifically, we have identified new sequences of phase transformations, including new recombination reactions that depend decisively on this ratio. This is a new level of complexity that has not been previously addressed, but proves essential for modeling the nature and number of internal layers in these rocky mantles.

In Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating geometries dual to non-relativistic theories, we show that the holographic entanglement entropy is not well-defined for Lorentz boosted subsystems in general. Lakshtanov et al. (2007) showed that incorporation of aluminum and some water into SiO2 significantly reduces the post-stishovite transition pressure in SiO2. This discovery suggested that the ferroelastic post-stishovite transition in subducted MORB crust could be the source of reflectors/scatterers with low shear velocities observed in the mid to upper lower mantle. A few years later, a similar effect was observed in anhydrous Al-bearing silica. In this paper, we show using first principles static calculations and molecular dynamics using inter-atomic potentials that hydrogen bonds and hydrogen mobility play a crucial role in lowering the post-stishovite transition pressure. A cooperative redistribution of hydrogen atoms is the main mechanism responsible for the transition pressure reduction in hydrous aluminous stishovite. The effect is enhanced by increasing hydrogen concentration. This perspective suggests a potential relationship between the depth of seismic scatterers and the water content in stishovite.

Abstract:
We report the discovery of a new allotrope of iron by first principles calculations. This phase has $Pmn2_1$ symmetry, a six-atom unit cell (hence the name Fe$_6$), and the highest magnetization density (M$_s$) among all known crystalline phases of iron. Obtained from the structural optimizations of the Fe$_3$C-cementite crystal upon carbon removal, $Pmn2_1$ Fe$_6$ is shown to result from the stab…

We report the discovery of a new allotrope of iron by first principles calculations. This phase has $Pmn2_1$ symmetry, a six-atom unit cell (hence the name Fe$_6$), and the highest magnetization density (M$_s$) among all known crystalline phases of iron. Obtained from the structural optimizations of the Fe$_3$C-cementite crystal upon carbon removal, $Pmn2_1$ Fe$_6$ is shown to result from the stabilization of a ferromagnetic FCC phase, further strained along the Bain path. Although metastable from 0 to 50 GPa, the new phase is more stable, at low pressures, than the other well-known HCP and FCC allotropes and smoothly transforms into the FCC phase under compression. If stabilized to room temperature, e.g., by interstitial impurities, Fe$_{6}$ could become the basis material for high M$_s$ rare-earth-free permanent magnets and high-impact applications such as, light-weight electric engine rotors or high-density recording media. The new phase could also be key to explain the enigmatic high M$_s$ of Fe$_{16}$N$_2$, which is currently attracting an intense research activity.

We present a genetic algorithm (GA) for structural search that combines the speed of structure exploration by classical potentials with the accuracy of density functional theory (DFT) calculations in an adaptive and iterative way. We present a genetic algorithm (GA) for structural search that combines the speed of structure exploration by classical potentials with the accuracy of density functional theory (DFT) calculations in an adaptive and iterative way. This strategy increases the efficiency of the DFT-based GA by several orders of magnitude. This gain allows considerable increase in size and complexity of systems that can be studied by first principles. The method's performance is illustrated by successful structure identifications of complex binary and ternary inter-metallic compounds with 36 and 54 atoms per cell, respectively. The discovery of a multi-TPa Mg-silicate phase with unit cell containing up to 56 atoms is also reported. Such phase is likely to be an essential component of terrestrial exoplanetary mantles.

Abstract:
We combine density functional theory within the local density approximation, the quasiharmonic approximation, and vibrational density of states to calculate single crystal elastic constants, and bulk and shear moduli of diamond at simultaneous high pressures and temperatures in the ranges of 0-500 GPa and 0-4800 K. Comparison with experimental values at ambient pressure and high temperature shows an excellent agreement for the first time with our first-principles results validating our method. We show that the anisotropy factor of diamond increases to 40% at high pressures and becomes temperature independent.

Abstract:
We propose three new phases of H2O under ultrahigh pressure. Our structural search was performed using an adaptive genetic algorithm which allows an extensive exploration of crystal structure. The new sequence of pressure-induced transitions beyond ice X at 0 K should be ice X - Pbcm - Pbca - Pmc21 - P21 - P21/c phases. Across the Pmc21 - P21 transition, the coordination number of oxygen increases…

All stable crystalline phases have nonmetallic band structures up to 7 TPa.

Abstract:
Platinum is widely used as a pressure calibration standard. However, the established thermal EOS has uncertainties, especially in the high $P$-$T$ range. We use density functional theory to calculate the thermal equation of state of platinum, up to 550 GPa and 5000 K. The static lattice energy is computed by using the LAPW method, with LDA, PBE, and the recently proposed WC functional. The elect…

The electronic thermal free energy is evaluated using the Mermin functional. The vibrational part is computed within the quasi-harmonic approximation using density functional perturbation theory and pseudopotentials. Special attention is paid to the influence of the electronic temperature to the phonon frequencies. We find that in overall LDA results agree best with the experiments. Based on the DFT calculations and the established experimental data, we develop a consistent thermal EOS of platinum as a reference for pressure calibration.
