Abstract:
Using density functional theory, we investigate systematically mixed MA(Pb:Sn)X3 perovskites, where MA is CH3NH3+, and X is Cl, Br, or I. Ab initio calculations of the orthorhombic, tetragonal, and cubic perovskite phases show that the substitution of lead by tin has a much weaker influence on both structure and cohesive energies than the substitution of the halogen. The thermodynamic stability of the MA(Pb:Sn)X3 mixtures at finite, non-zero temperatures is studied within the Regular Solution Model. We predict that it will be possible to create MA(Pb:Sn)I3 mixtures at any temperature. Our results imply that mixing is unlikely for the low-temperature phase of bromide and chloride compounds, where instead local clusters are more likely to form. We further predict that in the high-temperature cubic phase, Pb and Sn compounds will mix for both MA(Pb:Sn)Br3 and MA(Pb:Sn)Cl3 due to the entropy contribution to the Helmholtz free energy.

Abstract:
Using ab initio electronic structure calculations we investigate the change of the band structure and the nu_0 topological invariant in HgSe (non-centrosymmetric system) under two different type of uniaxial strain along the [001] and [110] directions, respectively. Both compressive [001] and [110] strain leads to the opening of a (crystal field) band gap (with a maximum value of about 37 meV) in t…

Using ab initio electronic structure calculations we investigate the change of the band structure and the nu_0 topological invariant in HgSe (non-centrosymmetric system) under two different type of uniaxial strain along the [001] and [110] directions, respectively. Both compressive [001] and [110] strain leads to the opening of a (crystal field) band gap (with a maximum value of about 37 meV) in the vicinity of Gamma, and the concomitant formation of a camel-back- (inverse camel-back-) shape valence (conduction) band along the direction perpendicular to the strain with a minimum (maximum) at Gamma. We find that the Z_2 invariant nu_0=1, which demonstrates conclusively that HgSe is a strong topological insulator (TI). With further increase of the strain the band gap decreases vanishing at a critical strain value (which depends on the strain type) where HgSe undergoes a transition from a strong TI to a trivial (normal) insulator. HgSe exhibits a similar behavior under a tensile [110] uniaxial strain. On the other hand, HgSe remains a normal insulator by applying a [001] tensile uniaxial strain. Complementary electronic structure calculations of the non-polar (110) surface under compressive [110] tensile strain show two Dirac cones at the Gamma point whose spin chiral states are associated with the top and bottom slab surfaces.

We present a GPU implementation of LAMMPS, a widely-used parallel molecular dynamics (MD) software package, and show 5x to 13x single node speedups versus the CPU-only version of LAMMPS. This new CUDA package for LAMMPS also enables multi-GPU simulation on hybrid heterogeneous clusters, using MPI for inter-node communication, CUDA kernels on the GPU for all methods working with particle data, and standard LAMMPS C++ code for CPU execution. Cell and neighbor list approaches are compared for best performance on GPUs, with thread-per-atom and block-per-atom neighbor list variants showing best performance at low and high neighbor counts, respectively. Computational performance results of GPU-enabled LAMMPS are presented for a variety of materials classes (e.g. biomolecules, polymers, metals, semiconductors), along with a speed comparison versus other available GPU-enabled MD software. Finally, we show strong and weak scaling performance on a CPU/GPU cluster using up to 128 dual GPU nodes.
