We present optical and near-infrared observations of a low-luminosity Type IIP supernova (SN) 2016bkv from the initial rising phase to the plateau phase. Our observations show that the end of the plateau is extended to $\gtrsim 140$ days since the explosion, indicating that this SN takes one of the longest time to finish the plateau phase. among Type IIP SNe (SNe IIP), including low-luminosity (LL) SNe IIP. The line velocities of various ions at the middle of the plateau phase are as low as 1,000--1,500 km s$^{-1}$, which is the lowest even among LL SNe IIP. These measurements imply that the ejecta mass in SN 2016bkv is larger than that of the well-studied LL IIP SN 2003Z. In the early phase, SN 2016bkv shows a strong bump in the light curve. In addition, the optical spectra in this bump phase exhibit a blue continuum accompanied with a narrow H$α$ emission line. These features indicate an interaction between the SN ejecta and the circumstellar matter (CSM) as in SNe IIn. Assuming the ejecta-CSM interaction scenario, the mass loss rate is estimated to be $\sim 1.7 \times 10^{-2} M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ within a few years before the SN explosion. This is comparable to or even larger than the largest mass loss rate observed for the Galactic red supergiants ($\sim 10^{-3} M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ for VY CMa). We suggest that the progenitor star of SN 2016bkv experienced a violent mass loss just before the SN explosion.

We present extensively dense observations of the super-Chandrasekhar supernova (SC SN) candidate SN 2012dn from $-11$ to $+140$ days after the date of its $B$-band maximum in the optical and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths conducted through the OISTER ToO program. The NIR light curves and color evolutions up to 35 days after the $B$-band maximum provided an excellent match with those of another SC SN 2009dc, providing a further support to the nature of SN 2012dn as a SC SN. We found that SN 2012dn exhibited strong excesses in the NIR wavelengths from $30$ days after the $B$-band maximum. The $H$ and $K_{s}$-band light curves exhibited much later maximum dates at $40$ and $70$ days after the $B$-band maximum, respectively, compared with those of normal SNe Ia. The $H$ and $K_{s}$-band light curves subtracted by those of SN 2009dc displayed plateaued evolutions, indicating a NIR echo from the surrounding dust. The distance to the inner boundary of the dust shell is limited to be $4.8 - 6.4\times10^{-2}$ pc. No emission lines were found in its early phase spectrum, suggesting that the ejecta-CSM interaction could not occur. On the other hand, we found no signature that strongly supports the scenario of dust formation. The mass loss rate of the pre-explosion system is estimated to be $10^{-6}-10^{-5}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, assuming that the wind velocity of the system is $10-100$ km~s$^{-1}$, which suggests that the progenitor of SN 2012dn could be a recurrent nova system. We conclude that the progenitor of this SC SN could be explained by the single-degenerate scenario.

We report observations of the Type Iax supernova (SN Iax) 2012Z at optical and near-infrared wavelengths from immediately after the explosion until $\sim$ $260$ days after the maximum luminosity using the Optical and Infrared Synergetic Telescopes for Education and Research (OISTER) Target-of-Opportunity (ToO) program and the Subaru telescope. We found that the near-infrared (NIR) light curve evolutions and color evolutions are similar to those of SNe Iax 2005hk and 2008ha. The NIR absolute magnitudes ($M_{J}\sim-18.1$ mag and $M_{H}\sim-18.3$ mag) and the rate of decline of the light curve ($Δ$ $m_{15}$($B$)$=1.6 \pm 0.1$ mag) are very similar to those of SN 2005hk ($M_{J}\sim-17.7$ mag, $M_{H}\sim$$-18.0$ mag, and $Δ$ $m_{15}$($B$)$\sim1.6$ mag), yet differ significantly from SNe 2008ha and 2010ae ($M_{J}\sim-14 - -15$ mag and $Δ$ $m_{15}$($B$)$\sim2.4-2.7$ mag). The estimated rise time is $12.0 \pm 3.0$ days, which is significantly shorter than that of SN 2005hk or any other Ia SNe. The rapid rise indicates that the $^{56}$Ni distribution may extend into the outer layer or that the effective opacity may be lower than that in normal SNe Ia. The late-phase spectrum exhibits broader emission lines than those of SN 2005hk by a factor of 6--8. Such high velocities of the emission lines indicate that the density profile of the inner ejecta extends more than that of SN 2005hk. We argue that the most favored explosion scenario is a `failed deflagration' model, although the pulsational delayed detonations is not excluded.

Multi-wavelength observations of the black-widow binary system 2FGL J2339.6-0532 are reported. The Fermi gamma-ray source 2FGL J2339.6-0532 was recently categorized as a black widow in which a recycled millisecond pulsar (MSP) is evaporating up the companion star with its powerful pulsar wind. Our optical observations show clear sinusoidal light curves due to the asymmetric temperature distribution of the companion star. Assuming a simple geometry, we constrained the range of the inclination angle of the binary system to 52$^{\circ}$ < i < 59$^{\circ}$, which enables us to discuss the interaction between the pulsar wind and the companion in detail. The X-ray spectrum consists of two components: a soft, steady component that seems to originate from the surface of the MSP, and a hard variable component from the wind-termination shock near the companion star. The measured X-ray luminosity is comparable to the bolometric luminosity of the companion, meaning that the heating efficiency is less than 0.5. In the companion orbit, 10$^{11}$ cm from the pulsar, the pulsar wind is already in particle dominant-stage, with a magnetization parameter of $σ$ < 0.1. In addition, we precisely investigated the time variations of the X-ray periodograms and detected a weakening of orbital modulation. The observed phenomenon may be related to an unstable pulsar-wind activity or a weak mass accretion, both of which can result in the temporal extinction of radio-pulse.

We performed optical simultaneous dual-band (SDSS $g'$- and $i'$- band) photometry and low-resolution spectroscopy for the WZ Sge-type dwarf nova EZ Lyn during its 2010 superoutburst. Dual-band photometry revealed that the $g'-i'$ color reddened with a decrease in brightness, during the main superoutburst and the following rebrightening phase, whereas the color became bluer with a further decrease in brightness during the slow, final decline phase. With a fit to our photometric results by a blackbody function, we estimated the disk radius ratio (ratio of the disk radius to the binary separation) and compared this with that of V455 And, a WZ Sge-type object that did not show any rebrightening in the 2007 superoutburst. The comparison revealed: (1) the disk radius ratio of EZ Lyn decreased more slowly than that of V455 And; and (2) the radius ratio of EZ Lyn at the end of the main superoutburst was larger than that of the V455 And. These results favor the mass reservoir model for the mechanism of rebrightening. During both the superoutburst plateau and subsequent rebrightening phase, H$α$ and H$β$ lines were detected. The H$α$ line showed a double-peak profile from which we estimated the disk radius ratio. The comparison of this ratio with that derived by photometry, indicates that the H$α$ disk was larger than the photometric one, which suggests that the optically thin gas was extended to the outer region more than the optically thick gas disk and was possibly responsible for the rebrightening phenomenon. Time-series dual-band photometry during the main superoutburst revealed that color variations during the early superhump show roughly the same behavior as that of V455 And, whereas color variations during the ordinary superhump display clear anticorrelation with brightness, in contrast to that seen in the V455 And.

CTA 102, classified as a flat spectrum radio quasar at z=1.037, produced exceptionally bright optical flare in 2012 September. Following Fermi-LAT detection of enhanced gamma-ray activity, we densely monitored this source in the optical and near-infrared bands for the subsequent ten nights using twelve telescopes in Japan and South-Africa. On MJD 56197 (2012 September 27, 4-5 days after the peak of bright gamma-ray flare), polarized flux showed a transient increase, while total flux and polarization angle remained almost constant during the "orphan polarized-flux flare". We also detected an intra-night and prominent flare on MJD 56202. The total and polarized fluxes showed quite similar temporal variations, but PA again remained constant during the flare. Interestingly, the polarization angles during the two flares were significantly different from the jet direction. Emergence of a new emission component with high polarization degree (PD) up to 40% would be responsible for the observed two flares, and such a high PD indicates a presence of highly ordered magnetic field at the emission site. We discuss that the well-ordered magnetic field and even the observed directions of polarization angle which is grossly perpendicular to the jet are reasonably accounted for by transverse shock(s) propagating down the jet.

We present our photometric studies of the newly discovered optical transient, OT J012059.6+325545, which underwent a large outburst between 2010 November and 2011 January. The amplitude of the outburst was about 8 mag. We performed simultaneous multi-color photometry by using g', Rc, and i'-band filters from the early stage of the outburst. The time resolved photometry during the early stage revealed periodic variations with double-peaked profiles, which are referred to as early superhumps, with amplitudes of about 0.08 mag. After the rapid fading from the main outburst, we found rebrightening phenomena, which occurred at least nine times. The large amplitude of the outburst, early superhumps, and rebrightening phenomena are typical features of WZ Sge-type dwarf novae. We detected color variations within the early superhump modulations making this only the second system, after V445 And, for which this has been established. We carried out numerical calculations of the accretion disk to explain both of the modulations and the color variations of the early superhump. This modeling of the disk height supports the idea that height variations within the outer disk can produce the early superhump modulations, though we cannot rule out that temperature asymmetries may also play a role.

We present the results of the optical spectropolarimetry of Earthshine on the Moon for Earth phase angles ranging from 49 to 96 degrees. The observations were conducted on 2011 March 9-13 (UT) using the spectropolarimeter HBS installed on the 1.88 m telescope at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. The wavelength coverage was 450-850 nm with a resolution of 6 nm. The observed Earthshine polarization degree spectra exhibit decreasing polarization degree with increasing wavelength at any phase. The overall degree of polarization increases as the Earth approaches a quadrature phase. The phase dependence differs with the wavelengths; the maximum polarization for the V band occurs at a phase angle of ~90 degrees, whereas that for longer wavelengths is reached at larger phase angles. This is interpreted as indicating that Earthshine polarization at shorter wavelengths is dominated by atmospheric Rayleigh scattering, whereas that at longer wavelengths has an increasingly effective contribution from the Earth surface reflection. The wavelength dependence of the phase angle of the maximum polarization appears to be unique among the terrestrial planetary bodies in the Solar System. Therefore this might constitute important evidence pointing toward a distinctive characteristic of the Earth: the planet has a scattering but transparent atmosphere above its surface.

We investigate the efficiency of interstellar polarization $p_λ/A_λ$ where $p_λ$ is the fractional linear polarization and $A_λ$ is extinction, in 16 lines of sight as a function of wavelength $λ$. We have used the data obtained with the low-dispersion spectropolarimeter HBS as well as those in literature. It is found that the polarization efficiency $p_λ/A_λ$ is proportional to $\exp(-β/λ)$ in wavelength $λ\approx 0.4-0.8 \micron$, where $β$ is a parameter which varies from 0.5 to 1.2 $\micron$. We find that $β$ is negatively correlated with the dust temperature deduced from infrared data by Schlegel et al., suggesting that the polarization efficiency is higher in short wavelength for higher temperature. According to the alignment theory by radiative torques (RATs), if the radiation is stronger and bluer, RATs will make small grains align better, and the polarization efficiency will increase in short wavelength. Our finding of the correlation between $β$ and the temperature is consistent with what is expected with the alignment mechanism by RATs.

We present optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry of a classical nova, V2362 Cyg (= Nova Cygni 2006). V2362 Cyg experienced a peculiar rebrightening with a long duration from 100 to 240 d after the maximum of the nova. Our multicolor observation indicates an emergence of a pseudophotosphere with an effective temperature of 9000 K at the rebrightening maximum. After the rebrightening maximum, the object showed a slow fading homogeneously in all of the used bands for one week. This implies that the fading just after the rebrightening maximum ( less or equal 1 week ) was caused by a slowly shrinking pseudophotosphere. Then, the NIR flux drastically increased, while the optical flux steeply declined. The optical and NIR flux was consistent with blackbody radiation with a temperature of 1500 K during this NIR rising phase. These facts are likely to be explained by dust formation in the nova ejecta. Assuming an optically thin case, we estimate the dust mass of 10^(-8) -- 10^(-10) M_solar, which is less than those in typical dust-forming novae. These results support the senario that a second, long-lasting outflow, which caused the rebrightening, interacted with a fraction of the initial outflow and formed dust grains.

We report on optical-near-infrared photopolarimetric observations of a blazar 3C 454.3 over 200 d. The object experienced an optical outburst in July 2007. This outburst was followed by a short state fainter than $V=15.2$ mag lasting $\sim 25$ d. The object, then, entered an active state during which we observed short flares having a timescale of 3-10 d. The object showed two types of features in the color-magnitude relationship. One is a "bluer-when-brighter" trend in the outburst state, and the other is a "redder-when-brighter" trend in the faint state. These two types of features suggest a contribution of a thermal emission to the observed flux, as suspected in previous studies. Our polarimetric observation detected two episodes of the rotation of the polarization vector. The first one was a counterclockwise rotation in the $QU$ plane during the outburst state. After this rotation event of the polarization vector, the object entered a rapidly fading stage. The second one was seen in a series of flares during the active state. Each flare had a specific position angle of polarization, and it apparently rotated clockwise from the first to the last flares. Thus, the object exhibited rotations of the polarization vector in opposite directions. We estimated a decay timescale of the short flares during the active state, and then calculated an upper limit of the strength of the magnetic field, $B$=0.2 G, assuming a typical beaming factor of blazars, $δ=20$. This upper limit of $B$ is smaller than those previously estimated from spectral analysis.

Our observation shows that this object is an SU UMa-type dwarf nova having a very short superhump period of 76.67+/- 0.03 min (0.05324+/-0.00002 d). The next superoutburst was observed in March 2008. The recurrence time of superoutbursts (supercycle) is, hence, estimated to be ~480 d. The supercycle is much shorter than those of WZ Sge-type dwarf novae having supercycles of >~ 10 yr, which are a major population of dwarf novae in the shortest orbital period regime (<~85 min). Using a hierarchical cluster analysis, we identified seven groups of dwarf novae in the shortest orbital period regime. We identified a small group of objects that have short supercycles, small outburst amplitudes, and large superhump period excesses, compared with those of WZ Sge stars. OT J055717+683226 probably belongs to this group.

We report detailed, long term near-infrared (NIR) light curves of GRS 1915+105 in 2007-2008, covering its long "soft state" for the first time. From our NIR monitoring and the X-ray data of the All Sky Monitor (ASM) onboard Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), we discovered that the NIR flux dropped by > 1 mag during short X-ray flares with a time-scale of days. With the termination of the soft state, the H-Ks color reddened and the anti-correlation pattern was broken. The observed H-Ks color variation suggests that the dominant NIR source was an accretion disk during the soft state. The short X-ray flares during the soft state were associated with spectral hardening in X-rays and increasing radio emission indicating jet ejection. The temporal NIR fading during the X-ray flares, hence, implies a sudden decrease of the contribution of the accretion disk when the jet is ejected.

We present the result of near-infrared and optical observations of the BL Lac object S5 0716$ + $714 carried out by the KANATA telescope. S5 0716$ + $714 has both a long term high-amplitude variability and a short-term variability within a night. The shortest variability (microvariability) time-scale is important for understanding the geometry of jets and magnetic field, because it provides a possible minimum size of variation sources. Here, we report the detection of 15-min variability in S5 0716$ + $714, which is one of the shortest time-scales in optical and near-infrared variations observed in blazars. The detected microvariation had an amplitude of $0.061{\pm}0.005$ mag in $V$ band and a blue color of $Δ(V-J)=-0.025{\pm}0.011$. Furthermore, we successfully detected an unprecedented, short time-scale polarimetric variation which correlated with the brightness change. We revealed that the microvariation had a specific polarization component. The polarization degree of the variation component was higher than that of the total flux. These results suggest that the microvariability originated from a small and local region where the magnetic field is aligned.

We report photometric observations of AL Com during its rare outburst in 2007. The light curve is reminiscent of its past superoutbursts in 1995 and 2001, except for the rebrightening phase after the main superoutburst. During the rebrightening phase in 2007, we found clear modulations between V=16.2-15.2. In conjunction with the lack of prominent superhumps in our time-series observations, the modulations can most naturally be interpreted as repetitive short rebrightenings with a cycle of 1-2 days. The rebrightening characteristics in 2007 are different from those in 1995 and 2001. This indicates that the type of rebrightenings in WZ Sge stars depends not on binary parameters of objects, but on the mass-accretion process for each outburst.

We present an extended optical spectropolarimetry of R CrB from 1998 January to 2003 September. The polarization was almost constant in the phase of maximum brightness, being consistent with past observations. We detected, however, temporal changes of polarization ($\sim 0.5$ %) in 2001 March and August, which were the first detection of large polarization variability in R CrB near maximum brightness. The amplitude and the position angle of the `transient polarization' were almost constant with wavelength in both two events. There was a difference by about 20 degrees in the position angle between the two events. Each event could be explained by light scattering due to short-lived dust puff occasionally ejected off the line of sight. The flatness of the polarization against the wavelength suggests that the scatterer is a mixture of dust grains having various sizes. The rapid growth and fading of the transient polarization favors the phenomenological model of dust formation near the stellar photosphere (e.g., within two stellar radii) proposed for the time evolution of brightness and chromospheric emission lines during deeply declining periods, although the fading timescale can hardly be explained by a simple dispersal of expanding dust puff with a velocity of $\sim 200-350$ km s $^{-1}$. Higher expansion velocity or some mechanism to destroy the dust grains should be needed.

Observations of the optical afterglow of GRB 041006 with the Kiso Observatory 1.05 m Schmidt telescope, the Lulin Observatory 1.0 m telescope and the Xinglong Observatory 0.6 m telescope. Three-bands (B, V and R) of photometric data points were obtained on 2004 October 6, 0.025-0.329 days after the burst. These very early multi band light curves imply the existence of a color dependent plateau phase. The B-band light curve shows a clear plateau at around 0.03 days after the burst. The R band light curve shows the hint of a plateau, or a possible slope change, at around 0.1 days after the burst. The overall behavior of these multi-band light curves may be interpreted in terms of the sum of two separate components, one showing a monotonic decay the other exhibiting a rising and a falling phase, as described by the standard afterglow model.

Multi-wavelength B, V, R, I observations of the optical afterglow of GRB 050319 were performed by the 1.05-m telescope at Kiso Observatory and the 1.0-m telescope at Lulin Observatory from 1.31 hours to 9.92 hours after the burst. Our R band lightcurves, combined with other published data, can be described by the smooth broken power-law function, with $α_1$ = -0.84 $\pm$0.02 to $α_2$ = -0.48$\pm$0.03, 0.04 days after the GRB. The optical lightcurves are characterized by shallow decays-- as was also observed in the X-rays-- which may have a similar origin, related to energy injection. However, our observations indicate that there is still a puzzle concerning the chromatic breaks in the R band lightcurve (at 0.04 days) and the X-ray lightcurve (at 0.004 days) that remains to be solved.

We present optical linear spectropolarimetry of the microquasar LS I +61$^{\circ}$ 303. The continuum emission is mildly polarized (up to 1.3 %) and shows almost no temporal change. We find a distinct change of polarization across the H$α$ emission line, indicating the existence of polarization component intrinsic to the microquasar. We estimate the interstellar polarization (ISP) component from polarization of the H$α$ line and derive the intrinsic polarization component. The wavelength dependence of the intrinsic component is well explained by Thomson scattering in equatorial disk of the Be-type mass donor. The position angle (PA) of the intrinsic polarization $\sim 25^{\circ}$ represents the rotational axis of the Be disk. This PA is nearly perpendicular to the PA of the radio jet found during quiescent phases. Assuming an orthogonal disk-jet geometry around the compact star, the rotational axis of the accretion disk is almost perpendicular to that of the Be disk. Moreover, according to the orbital parameters of the microquasar, the compact star is likely to get across the Be disk around their periastron passage. We discuss the peculiar circumstellar structure of this microquasar inferred from our observation and possible connection with its high-energy activities.

We present low-resolution ($R\sim 90$) and medium-resolution ($R\sim 2500$) spectropolarimetry of Nova V475 Sct with the HBS instrument, mounted on the 0.91-m telescope at the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory, and with FOCAS, mounted on the 8.2-m Subaru telescope. We estimated the interstellar polarization toward the nova from the steady continuum polarization components and H$α$ line emission components. After subtracting the interstellar polarization component from the observations, we found that the H$α$ emission seen on 2003 October 7 was clearly polarized. In the polarized flux spectrum, the H$α$ emission had a distinct red wing extending to $\sim +4900$ km s$^{-1}$ and a shoulder around $+3500$ km s$^{-1}$, showing a constant position angle of linear polarization $θ_{\rm *}\simeq 155\arcdeg\pm 15\arcdeg$. This suggests that the nova had an asymmetric outflow with a velocity of $v_{\rm wind}\simeq 3500$ km s$^{-1}$ or more, which is six times higher than the expansion velocity of the ionized shell at the same epoch. Such a high-velocity component has not previously been reported for a nova in the `moderately fast' speed class. Our observations suggest the occurrence of violent mass-loss activity in the nova binary system even during the common-envelope phase. The position angle of the polarization in the H$α$ wing is in good agreement with that of the continuum polarization found on 2003 September 26 ($p_{\rm *}\simeq 0.4$--0.6 %), which disappeared within the following 2 d. The uniformity of the PA between the continuum polarization and the wing polarization on October 7 suggests that the axis of the circumstellar asymmetry remained nearly constant during the period of our observations.
