Abstract:
We explore high-pressure phase stability and superconductivity of lanthanum hydrides $LaH_m$ (m=4-11,16). We predict stability of a hitherto unreported polyhydride $P6/mmm$-$LaH_{16}$ at pressures above 150 GPa; at 200 GPa its predicted superconducting $T_C$ is 156 K, critical field $μ_0$$H_C$(0) ~ 35 T and superconducting gap is up to 35 meV. We revisit superconductivity of the recently discovered $LaH_{10}$ and find its $T_C$ to be up to 259 K (170 GPa) from solving the Eliashberg equation and 271 K from solving the gap equation in SCDFT which also allowed us to compute the Coulomb pseudopotential $μ^*$ for $LaH_{10}$ and $LaH_{16}$. Presence of several polymorph modifications of LaH10 may explain the variety in the experimentally measured $T_C$ values for $LaH_{10}$ [1,2]

Recent experiments discovered superhydrides at very high pressures, e.g. FeH5 at 130 GPa and LaH10 at 170 GPa. Hydrogen-rich superhydrides are believed to be very promising high-Tc superconductors as they are expected to mimic characteristics of metallic hydrogen. Recent experiments discovered superhydrides at very high pressures, e.g. FeH5 at 130 GPa and LaH10 at 170 GPa. With the motivation of discovering new hydrogen-rich high-Tc superconductors at lowest possible pressure, here we report the prediction and experimental synthesis of cerium superhydride CeH9 below 100 GPa in the laser-heated diamond anvil cell. Ab-initio calculations were carried to evaluate the detailed chemistry of the Ce-H system and to understand the structure, stability and superconductivity of CeH9. CeH9 crystallizes in a P63/mmc clathrate structure with a substantially dense 3-dimensional hydrogen sublattice at 100 GPa. These findings shed a new light on the search for superhydrides in close proximity with atomic hydrogen within a feasible pressure range. Discovery of superhydride CeH9 provides a practical platform to further investigate and understand conventional superconductivity in hydrogen rich superhydrides.

With the motivation of searching for new superconductors in the Mg-B system, we performed ab initio evolutionary searches for all the stable compounds in this binary system in the pressure range of 0-200 GPa. We found previously unknown, yet thermodynamically stable, compositions MgB$_3$ and Mg$_3$B$_{10}$. Experimentally known MgB$_2$ is stable in the entire pressure range 0-200 GPa, while MgB$_7$ and MgB$_{12}$ are stable at pressures below 90 GPa and 35 GPa, respectively. We predict a reentrant behavior for MgB$_4$, which becomes unstable against decomposition into MgB$_2$ and MgB$_7$ at 4 GPa and then becomes stable above 61 GPa. We find ubiquity of phases with boron sandwich structures analogous to the AlB$_2$-type structure. However, with the exception of MgB$_2$, all other magnesium borides have low electron-phonon coupling constants $λ$ of 0.32 to 0.39 and are predicted to have T$_c$ below 3 K.

Following the idea that hydrogen-rich compounds might be high-T$_c$ superconductors at high pressures, and the very recent breakthrough in predicting and synthesizing hydrogen sulfide with record-high T$_c$ = 203 K, ab initio evolutionary algorithm for crystal structure prediction was employed to find stable germanium hydrides. In addition to the earlier structure of germane with space group Ama2, we propose a new C2/m structure, which is energetically more favorable at pressures above 278 GPa (with inclusion of zero point energy). Our calculations indicate metallicity of the new C2/m phase of germane with T$_c$ = 67 K at 280 GPa. Germane is found to exhibit thermodynamic instability to decomposition to hydrogen and the new compound Ge$_3$H$_{11}$ at pressures above 300 GPa. Ge$_3$H$_{11}$ with space group I$\bar{4}$m2 is found to become stable at above 285 GPa with T$_c$ = 43 K. We find that the pressure-induced phase stability of germanium hydrides is distinct from its analogous isoelectronic systems, e.g., Si-hydrides and Sn-hydrides. Superconductivity stems from large electron-phonon coupling associated with the wagging, bending and stretching intermediate-frequency modes derived mainly from hydrogen.

Abstract:
Boron suboxide B6O, the hardest known oxide, has an R-3m crystal structure (α-B6O) that can be described as an oxygen-intercalated structure of α-boron, or, equivalently, as a cubic close packing of B12 icosahedra with two oxygen atoms occupying all octahedral voids in it. Here we show a new ground state of this compound at ambient conditions, Cmcm-B6O (\b{eta}-B6O), which in all quantum-mechanica…

Here we show a new ground state of this compound at ambient conditions, Cmcm-B6O (\b{eta}-B6O), which in all quantum-mechanical treatments that we tested (GGA, LDA, and hybrid functional HSE06) comes out to be slightly but consistently more stable. Increasing pressure and temperature further stabilize it with respect to the known α-B6O structure. \b{eta}-B6O also has a slightly higher hardness and may be synthesized using different experimental protocols. We suggest that \b{eta}-B6O is present in mixture with α-B6O, and its presence accounts for previously unexplained bands in the experimental Raman spectrum.

In addition to the traditional SnH$_4$, new hydrides SnH$_8$, SnH$_{12}$ and SnH$_{14}$ are found to be thermodynamically stable at high pressure. Dynamical stability and superconductivity of tin-hydrides are systematically investigated. I$\bar{4}$m2-SnH$_8$, C2/m-SnH$_{12}$ and C2/m-SnH$_{14}$ exhibit higher superconducting transition temperatures of 81, 93 and 97 K compared to the traditional compound SnH$_4$ with T$_c$ of 52 K at 200 GPa. An interesting bent H$_3^-$ in I$\bar{4}$m2-SnH$_8$ and novel liner H$_4^-$ in C2/m-SnH$_{12}$ are observed. All the new tin-hydrides remain metallic over their predicted range of stability. The intermediate-frequency wagging and bending vibrations have more contribution to electron-phonon coupling parameter than high-frequency stretching vibrations of H$_2$ and H$_3$.

Its structure has $C2/c$ space group symmetry and contains 18 atoms in the primitive unit cell. Given the analogy between BeF$_{2}$ and SiO$_{2}$, silica phases have been investigated as well, but the new phase has not been observed to be thermodynamically stable for this system. However, it is found to be metastable and to have comparable energy to the known metastable phases of SiO$_{2}$, suggesting a possibility of its synthesis.
