Utilizing an interplay between band topology and intrinsic magnetism, the two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) system MnBi_2Te_4 provides an ideal platform for realizing exotic quantum phenomena and offers great opportunities in the emerging field of antiferromagnetic spintronic technology. Yet, the fabrication of MnBi_2Te_4-based nanodevices is hindered by the high sensitivity of this material, which quickly degrades when exposed to air or to elevated temperatures. Here, we demonstrate an alternative route of fabricating vdW-MnBi_2Te_4-based electronic devices using the cryogenic dry transfer of a printable circuit embedded in an inorganic silicon nitride membrane. The electrical connections between the thin crystal and the top surface of the membrane are established through via contacts. Our magnetotransport study reveals that this innovative via contact approach enables exploring the MnBi_2Te_4-like sensitive 2D materials and engineering synthetic heterostructures as well as complex circuits based on the two-dimensional vdW systems.

Abstract:
The recent realizations of the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ benchmark the (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ family as a promising hotbed for further QAHE improvements. The family owes its potential to its ferromagnetically (FM) ordered MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ septuple layers (SL). However, the QAHE realization is complicated in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and MnBi$_4$Te…

However, the QAHE realization is complicated in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ due to the substantial antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling between the SL. An FM state, advantageous for the QAHE, can be stabilized by interlacing the SL with an increasing number $n$ of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ layers. However, the mechanisms driving the FM state and the number of necessary QLs are not understood, and the surface magnetism remains obscure. Here, we demonstrate robust FM properties in MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$ ($n = 2$) with $T_C \approx 12$ K and establish their origin in the Mn/Bi intermixing phenomenon by a combined experimental and theoretical study. Our measurements reveal a magnetically intact surface with a large magnetic moment, and with FM properties similar to the bulk. Our investigation thus consolidates the MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$ system as perspective for the QAHE at elevated temperatures.

We report on the low-temperature ($T <$ 120 K) thermal expansion of the bismuth-based topological semimetal $β$-PtBi$_2$ and topological superconductor $β$-Bi$_2$Pd candidates. The linear thermal-expansion coefficient of tetragonal $β$-Bi$_2$Pd shows a pronounced anisotropy between the $a$- and $c$-axis while the volume thermal-expansion coefficient $α_V$($β$-Bi$_2$Pd) is considerable larger than $α_V$($β$-PtBi$_2$). The coefficient $α_V$($β$-PtBi$_2$) nearly matches the experimental specific heat, from which a Debye temperature $θ_D =$ 199 K is obtained. On the other hand, $α_V$($β$-Bi$_2$Pd) reasonably fits the Debye model with $θ_D =$ 138 K, extracted from the low-temperature specific heat. An almost constant Grüneisen parameter $Γ\approx$ 2 is obtained for both compounds. No magnetostriction is observed in any of both compounds up to $μ_0 H =$ 16 T. We compare our results with other Bi-based topological materials.

We report the results of the pressure-dependent measurements of the static magnetization and of the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) of Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ to address the properties of the ferromagnetic phase of this quasi-two-dimensional van der Waals magnet. The static magnetic data at hydrostatic pressures up to 3.4 GPa reveal a gradual suppression of ferromagnetism in terms of a reduction of the critical transition temperature, a broadening of the transition width and an increase of the field necessary to fully saturate the magnetization $M_{\rm s}$. The value of $M_{\rm s} \simeq 3μ_{\rm B}$/Cr remains constant within the error bars up to a pressure of 2.8 GPa. The anisotropy of the FMR signal continuously diminishes in the studied hydrostatic pressure range up to 2.39 GPa suggesting a reduction of the easy-axis type magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE). A quantitative analysis of the FMR data gives evidence that up to this pressure the MAE constant $K_{\rm U}$, although getting significantly smaller, still remains finite and positive, i.e. of the easy-axis type. Therefore, a recently discussed possibility of switching the sign of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy in Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ could only be expected at still higher pressures, if possible at all due to the observed weakening of the ferromagnetism under pressure. This circumstance may be of relevance for the design of strain-engineered functional heterostructures containing layers of Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$.

Recently, several putative quantum spin liquid (QSL) states were discovered in ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ rare-earth based triangular-lattice antiferromagnets (TLAF) with the delafossite structure. A way to clarify the origin of the QSL state in these systems is to identify ways to tune them from the putative QSL state towards long-range magnetic order. Here, we introduce the Ce-based TLAF KCeS$_2$ and show via low-temperature specific heat and $μ$SR investigations that it yields magnetic order below $T_{\mathrm N} = 0.38$ K despite the same delafossite structure. We identify a well separated ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ ground state for KCeS$_2$ from inelastic neutron scattering and embedded-cluster quantum chemical calculations. Magnetization and electron spin resonance measurements on single crystals indicate a strong easy-plane $g$~factor anisotropy, in agreement with the ab initio calculations. Finally, our specific-heat studies reveal an in-plane anisotropy of the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram which may indicate anisotropic magnetic interactions in KCeS$_2$.
