The metal-insulator transition (MIT) in vanadium dioxide VO$_2$ due to V-V dimerization has been extensively discussed for decades. While it is widely acknowledged that electron correlations, Peierls instabilities, and molecular orbital formations are crucial for understanding the MIT of VO$_2$, the primary origin of the MIT remains controversial. In this study, we delve into the crystal structure and orbital state of VO$_2$ through synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments. The molecular orbital formation corresponding to the V-V dimerization is directly observed in the low-temperature insulating monoclinic phase, called the M1 phase, as indicated by the valence electron density distribution. Moreover, diffuse scattering observed in the high-temperature metal phase of rutile structure suggests the presence of short-range correlation of V displacements, which is not directly attributed to the structural fluctuation of the M1 phase. The short-range order in the rutile phase will be the key to understanding the MIT in this system.

The paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition at $T_N \sim 105$ K evidenced on the susceptibility curve coincides with an increase of electron localization in transport measurements. Thermoelectric power and Hall coefficient measurements both exhibit dramatic changes at $T_N$, characteristic of a reconstruction of the bands structure near the Fermi level. No pronounced structural changes are observed at TN in this compound. The magnetic scattering signal on the neutron powder diffraction patterns below $T_N$ is weak, but can be tentatively modelled with an antiferromagnetic ordering of the spins at both ends of a trimer, the spin of the more symmetric Ru site remaining idle. Crystal field and strong spin-orbit coupling at the Ru$^{4+}$ site seem to be the key parameters to understand the magnetic state of Ba$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$.

The present study demonstrates a coexistence of spontaneous polarization and anti-ferroelectric-like nonlinear response in LSNO at 80 K, suggesting a weak ferroelectricity below the phase transition temperature of 217 K. A combination of first-principles cal-culations and single crystal x-ray diffractions clarifies a polar P21cn structure for the ground state of LSNO, where an in-plane anti-ferroelectric displacement and an out-of-plane polar shift simultaneously take place. The present study offers a new perspective to design ferroelectric and antiferroelectric materials with Ruddlesden-Popper-type compounds.

We have measured the reflectivity spectra of the barium iridate $9R$ BaIrO$_3$, the crystal structure of which consists of characteristic Ir$_3$O$_{12}$ trimers. In the high-temperature phase above the transition temperature $T_c\simeq180$ K, we find that the optical conductivity involves two temperature-dependent optical transitions with an ill-defined Drude response. These features are reminiscent of the optical spectra in the organic dimer Mott insulators, implying a possible emergence of an unusual electronic state named trimer Mott insulator in BaIrO$_3$, where the carrier is localized on the trimer owing to the strong Coulomb repulsion. Along with a pronounced splitting of the phonon peak observed below $T_c$, which is a hallmark of charge disproportionation, we discuss a possible phase transition from the trimer Mott insulator to a charge-ordered insulating phase in BaIrO$_3$.

The magnetic ground state of each compound stands against 2% substitution of magnetic impurities for Zn or Ca. We have found that the magnetic response of these impurities, which behave as paramagnetic spins, depends on the host materials and the difference of the two manifests itself in the Weiss temperature, which can hardly be explained by the dilute magnetic impurities alone in the case of Ba3ZnRu2O9. We consider a contribution from the Ru5+ ions which would appear only in the substituted Ba3ZnRu2O9 and discuss a possible physical meaning of the observed Weiss temperature.

These results indicate that the spin-orbital entropy is a key valuable for the thermoelectric properties of the strongly correlated cobalt oxides.

Here we characterize the full isostructural solid solution series Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{1-x}$W$_x$)O$_6$ ($0 \leq x \leq 1$) tunable from Néel order to quantum disorder to columnar order. A spin-liquid-like ground state was previously observed for the $x$ = 0.5 phase, but we show that the magnetic order is suppressed below 1.5 K in a much wider region of $x \approx$ 0.1-0.6. This coincides with significant $T$-linear terms in the low-temperature specific heat. However, density functional theory calculations predict most of the materials are not in the highly frustrated $J_2/J_1 \approx 0.5$ region square-lattice Heisenberg model. Thus, a combination of both magnetic frustration and quenched disorder is the likely origin of the spin-liquid-like state in $x$ = 0.5.

A quantum spin liquid state has long been predicted to arise in spin-1/2 Heisenberg square-lattice antiferromagnets at the boundary region between Néel (nearest-neighbor interaction dominates) and columnar (next-nearest-neighbor dominates) antiferromagnetic order. However, there are no known compounds in this region. Here we use $d^{10}$-$d^0$ cation mixing to tune the magnetic interactions on the square lattice while simultaneously introducing disorder. We find spin-liquid-like behavior in the double perovskite Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{0.5}$W$_{0.5}$)O$_6$, where the isostructural end phases Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ and Sr$_2$CuWO$_6$ are Néel and columnar type antiferromagnets, respectively. We show that magnetism in Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{0.5}$W$_{0.5}$)O$_6$ is entirely dynamic down to 19 mK. Additionally, we observe at low temperatures for Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{0.5}$W$_{0.5}$)O$_6$, similar to several spin liquid candidates, a plateau in muon spin relaxation rate and a strong $T$-linear dependence in specific heat. Our observations for Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{0.5}$W$_{0.5}$)O$_6$ highlight the role of disorder in addition to magnetic frustration in spin liquid physics.

We report the thermoelectric transport properties in the orbital-ordered Mott insulating phase of Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ close to and far from equilibrium. Near equilibrium conditions where the temperature gradient is only applied to the sample, an insulating but non-monotonic temperature variation of the Seebeck coefficient is observed, which is accounted for in terms of a temperature-induced suppression of the orbital order. In non-equilibrium conditions where we have applied high electrical currents, we find that the Seebeck coefficient is anomalously increased in magnitude with increasing external current. The present result clearly demonstrates a non-thermal effect since the heating simply causes a decrease of the Seebeck coefficient, implying a non-trivial non-equilibrium effect such as a modification of the spin and orbital state in currents.

Partial substitution for Zn can continuously vary the magnetic ground state from an antiferromagnetic order to a spin-gapped state through the liquid state. This indicates that the spin-liquid state emerges from a delicate balance of inter- and intra-dimer interactions, and the spin state of the dimer plays a vital role. This unique feature should realize a new type of quantum magnetism.

The development of dielectric materials with colossal permittivity is important for the miniaturization of electronic devices and fabrication of high-density energy-storage devices. The electron-pinned defect-dipoles has been recently proposed to boost the permittivity of (Nb + In) co-doped TiO2 to 105. However, the follow-up studies suggest an extrinsic contribution to the colossal permittivity from thermally excited carriers. Herein, we demonstrate a marked enhancement in the permittivity of (Nb + In) co-doped TiO2 single crystals at sufficiently low temperatures such that the thermally excited carriers are frozen out and exert no influence on the dielectric response. The results indicate that the permittivity attains quadruple of that for pure TiO2. This finding suggests that the electron-pinned defect-dipoles add an extra dielectric response to that of the TiO2 host matrix. The results offer a novel approach for the development of functional dielectric materials with large permittivity by engineering complex defects into bulk materials.

We propose a possible electronic model and transition mechanism, starting from a localized electron picture on the basis of the Rietveld refinement. Within this model, BaIrO3 can be basically regarded as a Mott insulator, when the Ir3O12 trimer is identified to one pseudo-atom or one lattice site. The transition can be viewed as a transition from the Mott insulator phase to a kind of charge ordered insulator phase.

The composition dependence of characteristic parameters for the cluster glass state suggests that chemical segregation can hardly explain the clustering mechanism. We find that a ferromagnetic transition with Tc = 30 K is observed in Sc-substituted samples. The composition dependence of the Curie-Weiss temperature implies that the magnetic susceptibility has a paramagnetic contribution with negative theta and a ferromagnetic contribution with positive theta. The field dependence of magnetization at 2 K is also understood as a summation of the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic components. These results suggest that CaRu1-xScxO3 is a non-uniform magnetic system. The relationship between the ferromagnetic ordering and the transport properties is also discussed.

The energy gap evaluated from the resistivity and the Seebeck coefficient systematically changes with the Ga concentration, and suggests that the system changes from a small polaron insulator to a band insulator. We find that all the samples show Curie-Weiss-like susceptibility with a small Weiss temperature of the order of 1 K, which is seriously incompatible with the collective wisdom that a trivalent rhodium ion is nonmagnetic. We have determined the $g$ factor to be $g$=2.3 from the electron spin resonance, and the spin number to be $S$=1 from the magnetization-field curves by fitting with a modified Brillouin function. The fraction of the $S$=1 spins is 2--5%, which depends on the degree of disorder in the La/Sr/Ca-site, which implies that disorder near the apical oxygen is related to the magnetism of this system. A possible origin for the magnetic Rh$^{3+}$ ions is discussed.

The dimer-peak growth is rapidly quenched as soon as a peak of the charge order shows up below Tc, indicating a competition between the two insulating phases. Our infrared imaging spectroscopy has further revealed a spatially competitive electronic phases far below Tc, suggesting a nature of quantum phase transition driven by material-parameter variations.

To elucidate an origin of the two energy gaps in the narrow-gap semiconductor FeSb2, we have investigated the effects of hydrostatic pressure on the resistivity, Hall resistance and magnetoresistance at low temperatures. The larger energy gap evaluated from the temperature dependence of resistivity above 100 K is enhanced from 30 to 40 meV with pressure from 0 to 1.8 GPa, as generally observed in conventional semiconductors. In the low-temperature range where a large Seebeck coefficient was observed, we evaluate the smaller energy gap from the magnetotransport tensor using a two-carrier model and find that the smaller gap exhibits a weak pressure dependence in contrast to that of the larger gap. To explain the pressure variations of the energy gaps, we propose a simple model that the smaller gap is a gap from the impurity level to the conduction band and the larger one is a gap between the valence and conduction bands, suggesting that the observed large Seebeck coefficient is not relevant to electron correlation effects.

We report the observation of photo-Seebeck effect in tetragonal PbO crystals. The photo-induced carriers contribute to the transport phenomena, and consequently the electrical conductivity increases and the Seebeck coefficient decreases with increasing photon flux density. A parallel-circuit model is used to evaluate the actual contributions of photo-excited carriers from the measured transport data. The photo-induced carrier concentration estimated from the Seebeck coefficient increases almost linearly with increasing photon flux density, indicating a successful photo-doping effect on the thermoelectric property. The mobility decreases by illumination but the reduction rate strongly depends on the illuminated photon energy. Possible mechanisms of such photon-energy-dependent mobility are discussed.

We present nonlinear conduction phenomena in the Mott insulator Ca2RuO4 investigated with a proper evaluation of self-heating effects. By utilizing a non-contact infrared thermometer, the sample temperature was accurately determined even in the presence of large Joule heating. We find that the resistivity continuously decreases with currents under an isothermal environment. The nonlinearity and the resulting negative differential resistance occurs at relatively low current range, incompatible with conventional mechanisms such as hot electron or impact ionization. We propose a possible current-induced gap suppression scenario, which is also discussed in non-equilibrium superconducting state or charge-ordered insulator.

We have found that the values of the Co(Rh)-O bond lengths in the Co(Rh)O$_{6}$ octahedron of LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ are nearly identical at 10 K. The lattice volume for the Rh$^{3+}$ substituted samples decreases with the thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of LaCoO$_{3}$ from room temperature, and ceases to decrease around 70 K. These experimental results favor a mixed state consisting of the high-spin-state and low-spin-state Co$^{3+}$ ions, and suggest that the high-spin-state Co$^{3+}$ ions are thermally excited in addition to those pinned by the substituted Rh$^{3+}$ ions.

The crystal structure is re-determined from 78 to 300 K across an antiferromagnetic transition at 105 K. The orthorhombic symmetry (Cmca, space group No. 64) is preserved at all temperatures measured. This structure presents exceptionally long Ru-O distances characterized by a significant distribution within the Ru3O12 trimer. A bond valence sum calculation suggests that the charge disproportionation within the Ru3O12 trimer emerges even at room temperature, which we ascribe to molecular orbital formation in the Ru3O12 trimer, as supported by recent theoretical calculations. Based on the analyzed crystal structure, the electronic states and the nature of the phase transition at 105 K are discussed.

A broad peak in the magnetic susceptibility - temperature curves originated from a short range helical ordering at low temperature is suppressed by the Ni and Zn substitution for Cu sites. The capacitance is found to anomalously increase with decreasing T below ~50 K, which is also suppressed by the impurity doping. The behavior of the anomalous capacitance component is found to be strongly connected with that of the magnetic susceptibility for Rb$_{2}$(Cu$_{1-x}$M$_{x}$)$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{12}$ which indicates that the low-temperature dielectric response is driven by the magnetism.

We examine how the photo-induced carriers contribute the thermoelectric transport, i.e. the nature of the photo-Seebeck effect, in the wide-gap oxide semiconductor ZnO for the first time. We measure the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient with illuminating light. The light illumination considerably changes the Seebeck coefficient as well as the conductivity, which is sensitive to the photon energy of the illuminated light. By using a simple parallel-circuit model, we evaluate the contributions of the photo-induced carriers to the conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient, whose relationship shows a remarkable resemblance to that in doped semiconductors. Our results also demonstrate that the light illumination increases both the carrier concentration and the mobility, which can be compared with impurity-doping case for ZnO. Future prospects for thermoelectrics using light are discussed.

These two values are suitable for efficient oxide thermoelectrics, although the resistivity is still as high as 1 $Ω$cm. From the susceptibility and x-ray absorption measurements, we find that the doped electrons exist as Ru$^{4+}$ in the low spin state. Magnetization and x-ray diffraction have been measured on polycrystalline samples of LaCo$_{0.8-y}$Rh$_{0.2}$Ga$_{y}$O$_{3}$ for $0 \leq y \leq 0.15$ in order to understand the spin state of Co$^{3+}$ through the Ga$^{3+}$ substitution effect. The ferromagnetic order in LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ below 15 K is dramatically suppressed by the Ga$^{3+}$ substitution, where the ferromagnetic volume fraction is linearly decreased. The normal state susceptibility also systematically decreases with the Ga content, from which we find that one Ga$^{3+}$ ion reduces 4.6 $μ_{\rm B}$ per formula unit. We have evaluated how the concentration of the high-spin state Co$^{3+}$ changes with temperature by using an extended Curie-Weiss law, and have found that the substituted Rh$^{3+}$ ion stabilizes the high-spin state Co$^{3+}$ ion down to low temperatures. We find that Ga$^{3+}$ preferentially replaces the high-spin state Co$^{3+}$, which makes a remarkable contrast to our previous finding that Rh$^{3+}$ preferentially replaces the low-spin state Co$^{3+}$. These results strongly suggest that the magnetically excited state of LaCoO$_{3}$ at room temperature is a mixed state of high-spin state Co$^{3+}$ and low-spin state Co$^{3+}$.

We have measured high-field magnetization and magnetoresistance of polycrystalline samples of the A-site ordered perovskite CaCu3Ti4-xRuxO12 (x=0 - 4) utilizing a non-destructive pulsed magnet. We find that the magnetization for x=0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 is nonlinear, and tends to saturate in high fields. This is highly nontrivial because the magnetization for x=0 and 4 is linear in external field up to the highest one. We have analyzed this field dependence based on the thermodynamics of magnetic materials, and propose that the external fields delocalize the holes on the Cu2+ ions in order to maximize the entropy. This scenario is qualitatively consistent with a large magnetoresistance of -70% observed at 4.2 K at 52 T for x=1.5.

Both the electrical and Hall resistivities show unusual magnetic field dependence in the low-temperature range where a large Seebeck coefficient was observed. By applying a two-carrier model, we find that the carrier concentration decreases from 1 down to 10^-4 ppm/unit cell and the mobility increases from 2000 to 28000 cm2/Vs with decreasing temperature from 30 down to 4 K. At lower temperatures, the magnetoresistive behavior drastically changes and a negative magnetoresistance is observed at 3 K. These low-temperature behaviors are reminiscent of the low-temperature magnetotransport observed in doped semiconductors such as As-doped Ge, which is well described by a weak-localization picture. We argue a detailed electronic structure in FeSb2 inferred from our observations.

The evaluated power factor is found to be nearly independent of carrier concentration in a wide range of doping, and well explains the experimental data for cobalt oxides. We report measurements and analysis of magnetization, resistivity and thermopower of polycrystalline samples of the perovskite-type Co/Rh oxide La$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$Co$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$O$_{3-δ}$. This system constitutes a solid solution for a full range of $x$,in which the crystal structure changes from rhombohedral to orthorhombic symmetry with increasing Rh content $x$. The magnetization data reveal that the magnetic ground state immediately changes upon Rh substitution from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic with increasing $x$ near 0.25, which is close to the structural phase boundary. We find that one substituted Rh ion diminishes the saturation moment by 9 $μ_B$, which implies that one Rh$^{3+}$ ion makes a few magnetic Co$^{3+}$ ions nonmagnetic (the low spin state), and causes disorder in the spin state and the highest occupied orbital. In this disordered composition ($0.05\le x \le 0.75$), we find that the thermopower is anomalously enhanced below 50 K. In particular, the thermopower of $x$=0.5 is larger by a factor of 10 than those of $x$=0 and 1, and the temperature coefficient reaches 4 $μ$V/K$^2$ which is as large as that of heavy-fermion materials such as CeRu$_2$Si$_2$.

Most unexpectedly, this particular organic salt has nontrivial charge degrees of freedom, being characterized by a dipole-glass-like dielectric relaxation below around 60 K. This is ascribed to the charge disproportionation within the dimer due to the intersite Coulomb repulsion. In this respect, the dipole observed here is purely quantum mechanical, and thereby exhibits unexpected responses.

The saturated Hall resistivity of Fe$_{3}$Sn$_{2}$ is 3.2 $μΩ$cm at 300 K, which is almost 20 times higher than that of typical itinerant-ferromagnets such as Fe and Ni. The anomalous Hall coefficient $R_{\rm s}$ is 6.7$\times10^{-9}$ $Ω$cm/G at 300 K, which is three orders of magnitude larger than that of pure Fe. $R_{\rm s}$ obeys an unconventional scaling to the longitudinal resistivity, $ρ_{xx}$, of $R_{\rm s} \propto ρ_{xx}^{3.3}$. Such a relationship cannot be explained by the skew and/or side-jump mechanisms and indicates that the origin of the anomalous Hall effect in the frustrated magnet Fe$_{3}$Sn$_{2}$ is indeed extraordinary.

Abstract:
Solitons and polarons at nonequilibrium steady states are investigated for the spinless Takayama Lin-Liu Maki model. Polarons are found to be possible {\it only out of equilibrium}. This polaron formation is a genuine nonequilibrium phenomenon, as there is a lower threshold current below which they cannot exist. It is considered to be an example of microscopic dissipative structure.

Abstract:
Nonequlibrium phase transition of an open Takayama-Lin Liu-Maki chain coupled with two reservoirs is investigated. We will show that solitons connecting two uniform phases are possible, and the amplitude of solitons obeys the same self-consistent equation as that of uniform phases.

Nonequlibrium phase transition of an open Takayama-Lin Liu-Maki chain coupled with two reservoirs is investigated by combining a mean-field approximation and a formula characterizing nonequlibrium steady states, which is obtained from the algebraic field approach to nonequlibrium statistical mechanics. When the bias voltage is chosen to be a control parameter, the phase transition between ordered and normal phases is found to be first or second order. Then, the voltage-current characteristics is S-shaped in some parameter region. In contrast, when the current is chosen to be a control parameter, all the non-trivial solutions of the self-consistent equation are found to become stable. In this case, the phase transition between the ordered and normal phases is always second order and negative differential conductivity appears at low temperature.

Abstract:
We report measurements and analyses of resistivity, thermopower, and thermal conductivity of polycrystalline samples of perovskite LaRh$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$O$_3$. The thermopower is found to be large at 800 K (185 $μ$V/K for $x=$0.3), which is ascribed to the high-temperature stability of the low-spin state of Rh$^{3+}$/Rh$^{4+}$ ions. This clearly contrasts with the thermopower of the isostructural oxide LaCoO$_3$, which rapidly decreases above 500 K owing to the spin-state transition. The spin state of the transition-metal ions is one of the most important parameters in oxide thermoelectrics.

The higher-temperature transition at 509 K is driven by ordering of the oxygen vacancies, which is closely related to the metallic state at high temperatures. The lower-temperature transition at 360 K is of first order, at which the ferromagnetic state suddenly appears with exhibiting a jump in magnetization and resistivity. Based on the refined structure, possible spin and orbital models for the magnetic order are proposed.

A two-staged, uniaxial magnetoresistive effect has been discovered in SrCo6O11 having a layered hexagonal structure. Conduction electrons and localized Ising spins are in different sublattices but their interpenetration makes the conduction electrons sensitively pick up the stepwise field-dependence of magnetization. The stepwise field-dependence suggests two competitive interlayer interactions between ferromagnetic Ising-spin layers, i.e., a ferromagnetic nearest-layer interaction and an antiferromagnetic next-nearest-layer interaction. This oxide offers a unique opportunity to study nontrivial interplay between conduction electrons and Ising spins, the coupling of which can be finely controlled by a magnetic field of a few Tesla.

We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy applied to deeply underdoped cuprate superconductors Bi2Sr2(Ca,Y)Cu2O8 (Bi2212) to reveal the presence of two distinct energy gaps exhibiting different doping dependence. One gap, associated with the antinodal region where no coherent peak is observed, increases with underdoping - a behavior known for more than a decade and considered as the general gap behavior in the underdoped regime. The other gap, associated with the near nodal regime where a coherent peak in the spectrum can be observed, does not increase with less doping - a behavior not observed in the single particle spectra before. We propose a two-gap scenario in momentum space that is consistent with other experiments and may contain important information on the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity.

We calculate the out-of-plane thermopower in a quasi-two dimensional system, and argue that this quantity is an effective probe of the asymmetry of the single-particle spectral function. We find that the temperature and doping dependence of the out-of-plane thermopower in Bi_2(Sr,La)_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} single crystals is broadly consistent with the behavior of the spectral function determined from ARPES and tunneling experiments. We also investigate the relationship between out-of-plane thermopower and entropy in a quasi-two dimensional material. We present experimental evidence that at moderate temperatures, there is a qualitative correspondence between the out-of-plane thermopower in Bi_2(Sr,La)_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}, and the entropy obtained from specific heat measurements. Finally, we argue that the derivative of the entropy with respect to particle number may be the more appropriate quantity to compare with the thermopower, rather than the entropy per particle.

We further studied the substitution effects of Ce for Nd in Nd$_{1.9}$Ce$_{0.1}$PdO$_4$, where the substituted Ce decreases the resistivity and the magnitude of the thermopower. The activation energy gap of 70-80 meV and the effective mass of 15 evaluated from the measured data are suitable for thermoelectric materials, but the mobility of 10$^{-6}$ cm$^2$/Vs is much lower than a typical value of 1-10 cm$^2$/Vs for other thermoelectric oxides.
