For the Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ crystalline compound with a rich temperature--pressure phase diagram that contains the ferroelectric phase, semiconductor-to-metal transition, and superconductive state, \mbox{\textit{ab initio}} molecular dynamics calculations were performed on a single unit cell and on a superstructure using an evolutionary algorithm in combination with density functional theory calculations to study structural transformations resulting from rearrangements in chemical bonds under pressure. The structure models of the pressure-induced lowest energy phases in the molecular Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ crystal demonstrate the possibility of space-arranged chains or rings of P$_2$S$_6$ molecules. Pressure can break P-P bonds of P$_2$S$_6$ molecules, causing one of the phosphorous atoms to displace into the sulfur-formed octahedron and providing another phosphorous atom into an octahedral coordination with two tin atoms and four sulfur atoms. The results of the modeling correlate with the gradual rise of deviation of the pressure dependence of the unit cell volume of the Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ structure, as determined by X-ray diffraction experiments, from the dependence calculated with the Birch-Murnaghan equation of state. It also reveals toroidally ordered local dipoles in the centrosymmetric phase, which may be related to the previously observed superconductivity in the high-pressure metallic phase of Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$.

Analytical calculations corroborated by the finite element modelling show that thin films of Van der Waals ferrielectrics covered by a 2D-semiconductor are promising candidates for the controllable reduction of the dielectric layer capacitance due to the negative capacitance (NC) effect emerging in the ferrielectric film. The NC state is conditioned by energy-degenerated poly-domain states of the ferrielectric polarization induced in the films under incomplete screening conditions in the presence of a dielectric layer. Calculations performed for the FET-type heterostructure "ferrielectric CuInP2S6 film - 2D-MoS2 single-layer - SiO2 dielectric layer" reveal the pronounced size effect of the multilayer capacitance. Derived analytical expressions for the electric polarization and multilayer capacitance allow to predict the thickness range of the dielectric layer and ferrielectric film for which the NC effect is the most pronounced in various Van der Waals ferrielectrics, and the corresponding subthreshold swing becomes much less than the Boltzmann's limit. Obtained results can be useful for the size and temperature control of the NC effect in the steep-slope ferrielectric FETs.

The change in the ionic screening degree and mismatch strains induce a broad range of the transitions between paraelectric phase, antiferroelectric, ferrielectric, and ferri-ionic states in CuInP$_2$S$_6$ nanoflakes. The states' stability and/or metastability is determined by the minimum of the system free energy consisting of electrostatic energy, elastic energy, and a Landau-type four-well potential of the ferrielectric dipole polarization. The possibility to govern the transitions by strain and ionic screening can be useful for controlling the tunneling barrier in thin film devices based on CuInP$_2$S$_6$ nanoflakes. Also, we predict that the CuInP$_2$S$_6$ nanoflakes reveal features of the controllable negative capacitance effect, which make them attractive for advanced electronic devices, such as nano-capacitors and gate oxide nanomaterials with reduced heat dissipation.

Using the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire phenomenological approach we explore the strain-polarization coupling in the low-dimensional van der Waals ferrielectrics. We evolve the analytical model of the piezoelectric susceptibility of the material in response to the periodic strain modulation, such as caused by a surface acoustic wave. Numerical calculations are performed for recently discovered and poorly studied ultrathin layers of the van der Waals ferrielectric CuInP2S6, which are very promising candidates for advanced nanoelectronics. We obtained that the temperature dependences of the dielectric and piezoelectric susceptibilities, and elastic compliance of the ultrathin CuInP2S6 layer have a sharp maximum at the temperature of CuInP2S6 paraelectric-ferrielectric phase transition near 320 K. The magnitudes of the dielectric and piezoelectric susceptibilities, and elastic compliance depend significantly on the modulation period of the surface acoustic wave. Obtained results explore the potential of ultrathin CuInP2S6 layers for application in piezoelectric and straintronic devices.

The appearance of spontaneous polarization in CuInP$_{2}$S$_{6}$ ferrielectrics is related to the second order Jahn-Teller effect for copper cations located in a double-well local potential, the stereoactivity of indium cations located in a three-well local potential, as well as the valence fluctuations of phosphorus cations. The paraelectric to ferrielectric phase transition is primarily determined by the coupling of indium cations with their surroundings. This transition can be analyzed using the mixed Ising model with spins $s = 1/2$ and $S = 1$. The spectrum of pseudospin fluctuations at different temperatures was calculated using a mean-field approach for a set of quantum anharmonic oscillators. The results were then compared with Raman spectroscopy data for CuInP$_{2}$S$_{6}$ crystal. The analysis indicates that the lattice anharmonicity below 150 K, is mainly determined by the indium sublattice, leading to the coexistence of the glassy state and ferrielectric phase. Above 150 K, the anharmonicity of the copper sublattice activates the ionic conductivity and results in the existence of a long-ranged fluctuated cluster of spontaneous polarization in a temperature interval of the paraelectric phase above $T_{C}$.

The low-dimensional ferroelectrics, ferrielectrics and antiferroelectrics are of urgent scientific interest due to their unusual polar, piezoelectric, electrocaloric and pyroelectric properties. The strain engineering and strain control of the ferroelectric properties of layered 2D Van der Waals materials, such as CuInP$_2$(S,Se)$_6$ monolayers, thin films and nanoflakes, are of fundamental interest and especially promising for their advanced applications in nanoscale nonvolatile memories, energy conversion and storage, nano-coolers and sensors. Here, we study the polar, piezoelectric, electrocaloric and pyroelectric properties of thin strained films of a ferrielectric CuInP$_2$S$_6$ covered by semiconducting electrodes and reveal an unusually strong effect of a mismatch strain on these properties. In particular, the sign of the mismatch strain and its magnitude determine the complicated behavior of piezoelectric, electrocaloric and pyroelectric responses. The strain effect on these properties is opposite, i.e., "anomalous", in comparison with many other ferroelectric films, for which the out-of-plane remanent polarization, piezoelectric, electrocaloric and pyroelectric responses increase strongly for tensile strains and decrease or vanish for compressive strains.

Using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) phenomenological approach we analyze the bending-induced re-distribution of electric polarization and field, elastic stresses and strains inside ultrathin layers of van der Waals ferrielectrics. We consider a CuInP2S6 (CIPS) thin layer with fixed edges and suspended central part, the bending of which is induced by external forces. The unique aspect of CIPS is the existence of two ferrielectric states, FI1 and FI2, corresponding to big and small polarization values, which arise due to the specific four-well potential of the eighth-order LGD functional. When the CIPS layer is flat, the single-domain FI1 state is stable in the central part of the layer, and the FI2 states are stable near the fixed edges. With an increase of the layer bending below the critical value, the sizes of the FI2 states near the fixed edges decreases, and the size of the FI1 region increases. When the bending exceeds the critical value, the edge FI2 states disappear being substituted by the FI1 state, but they appear abruptly near the inflection regions and expand as the bending increases. The bending-induced isostructural FI1-FI2 transition is specific for the bended van der Waals ferrielectrics described by the eighth (or higher) order LGD functional with consideration of linear and nonlinear electrostriction couplings. The isostructural transition, which is revealed in the vicinity of room temperature, can significantly reduce the coercive voltage of ferroelectric polarization reversal in CIPS nanoflakes, allowing for the curvature-engineering control of various flexible nanodevices.

Using DFT-based molecular dynamics simulation of Cu$^+$ cations flipping and In$^{3+}$ cations displacive dynamics, we clarify the dipole ordering of CuInP$_2$S$_6$ ferrielectrics through the second order Jahn-Teller effect which determines the double-well potential for copper cations as well as three-well potential for indium cations inside the structural layers. The temperature dependence of the spatial distribution of Cu$^+$ and In$^{3+}$ cations is also described within the quantum anharmonic oscillators model. In$^{3+}$ cations play a decisive role in the character of the polar ordering: at ambient or for positive pressures, the first order transition occurs; with the rise of negative compression, the ferrielectric transition evolves to the second order. The peculiarities of spontaneous polarization switching are related to the contributions of copper and indium cationic sublattices.

Strain-induced transitions of polarization reversal in thin films of a ferrielectric CuInP$_2$S$_6$ (CIPS) with ideally-conductive electrodes is explored using the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) approach with an eighth-order free energy expansion in polarization powers. Due to multiple potential wells, the height and position of which are temperature- and strain-dependent, the energy profiles of CIPS can flatten in the vicinity of the non-zero polarization states. This behavior differentiates these materials from classical ferroelectrics with the first or second order ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition, for which potential energy profiles can be shallow or flat near the transition point only, corresponding to zero spontaneous polarization. Thereby we reveal an unusually strong effect of the mismatch strain on the out-of-plane polarization reversal, hysteresis loops shape, dielectric susceptibility, and piezoelectric response of CIPS films. In particular, by varying the sign of the mismatch strain and its magnitude in a narrow range, quasi-static hysteresis-less paraelectric curves can transform into double, triple, and other types of pinched and single hysteresis loops. The strain effect on the polarization reversal is opposite, i.e., "anomalous", in comparison with many other ferroelectric films in that the out-of-plane remanent polarization and coercive field increases strongly for tensile strains, meanwhile the polarization decreases or vanish for compressive strains. We explain the effect by "inverted" signs of linear and nonlinear electrostriction coupling coefficients of CIPS and their strong temperature dependence. For definite values of temperature and mismatch strain, the low-frequency hysteresis loops of polarization may exhibit negative slope in the relatively narrow range of external field amplitude and frequency.

Light exposure increases the free carrier density near the NP surface and may in turn induce phase transitions from the nonpolar paraelectric to the polar ferroelectric phase. Using the uniaxial photo-ferroelectric Sn2P2S6 as an example, we show that visible light exposure induces the appearance and vanishing of striped, labyrinthine or curled domains and changes in the polarization switching hysteresis loop shape from paraelectric curves to double, pinched and single loops, as well as the shifting in the position of the tricritical point. Furthermore, we demonstrate that an ensemble of non-interacting photo-ferroelectric NPs may exhibit superparaelectric-like features at the tricritical point, such as strongly frequency-dependent giant piezoelectric and dielectric responses, which can potentially be exploited for piezoelectric applications.

Using the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach, we study stress-induced transformations of polarization switching in ferrielectric CuInP2S6 nanoparticles for three different shapes: a disk, a sphere, and a needle. Semiconducting properties of a nanoparticle are modeled by a surface charge layer, whose effective screening length can be rather small due to the field-effect. We reveal a very strong and unusual influence of hydrostatic pressure on the appearance of polarization switching in CuInP2S6 nanoparticles, hysteresis loops shape, magnitude of the remanent polarization, and coercive fields, and explain the effects by the anomalous temperature dependence and "inverted" signs of CuInP2S6 linear and nonlinear electrostriction coupling coefficients. In particular, by varying the sign of the applied pressure (from tension to compression) and its magnitude (from zero to several hundreds of MPa), quasi-static hysteresis-less paraelectric curves can transform into double, triple, pinched, or single hysteresis loops. Due to the sufficiently wide temperature and pressure ranges of double, triple, and pinched hysteresis loop stability (at least in comparison with many other ferroelectrics), CuInP2S6 nanodisks can be of particular interest for applications in energy storage (in the region of double loops), CuInP2S6 nanospheres maybe suitable for dynamic random access multibit memory, and CuInP2S6 nanoneedles are promising for non-volatile multibit memory cells (in the regions of triple and pinched loops). Pronounced softening of acoustic phonon branch is observed in the paraelectric phase below $T^{*} \approx 330~$K at cooling to temperature $T_C \approx 312~$K of the first order phase transition into ferrielectric phase. Below $T_C$ the hypersound velocity growth in correlation with spontaneous polarization rise and its temperature anomaly is similar to earlier observed temperature behavior of longitudinal ultrasound velocity for acoustic wave propagated normally to the structural layers. Determined anomalous part of the CuInP$_2$S$_6$ crystal thermal conductivity in the vicinity of ferrielectric transition also demonstrate lowering of the heat transferring phonons group velocity with cooling from $T^{*}$ to $T_C$. Observed acoustic softening obviously is induced by flexoelectric coupling of relaxational soft polar optic and acoustic branches that is related to inhomogeneously polarized state appearing between paraelectric and ferrielectric phases.

Using Landau-Ginsburg-Devonshire approach and available experimental results we reconstruct the thermodynamic potential of the layered ferroelectric CuInP$_2$S$_6$ (CIPS), which is expected to be applicable a wide range of temperatures and applied pressures. The analysis of temperature dependences of the dielectric permittivity and lattice constants for different applied pressures unexpectedly reveals the critically important role of the nonlinear electrostriction in this material. With the nonlinear electrostriction included we calculated temperature and pressure phase diagrams and spontaneous polarization of bulk CIPS. Using the coefficients of the reconstructed four-well thermodynamic potential, we study the strain-induced phase transitions in thin epitaxial CIPS films, as well as the stress-induced phase transitions in CIPS nanoparticles, which shape varies from prolate needles to oblate disks. The dipole ordering in Sn(Pb)$_2$P$_2$S(Se)$_6$ materials may be tuned by chemical substitution realizing a ferroelectric quantum phase transition and quantum glassy or relaxor type phenomena on different parts of the phase diagram. The introduction of Ge impurity increases the temperature of the phase transitions and initiates a more pronounced Ising type critical anomaly in Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ crystal, does not shift the coordinate of the Lifshitz point $x_{\textrm {LP}}$ in Sn$_2$P$_2$(Se$_x$S$_{1-x}$)$_6$ mixed crystals, induces the appearance of a ferroelectric phase transition in quantum paraelectrics Pb$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ and inhomogeneous polar ordering in (Pb$_{0.7}$Sn$_{0.3}$)$_2$P$_2$S(Se)$_6$ crystals. For Pb$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ crystal, the real part of the dielectric susceptibility in the quantum critical regime varies as $1/T^2$ instead of the expected $1/T^3$ behavior for uniaxial materials. This can be partially explained by a screening phenomenon in the semiconductor materials of the Sn(Pb)$_2$P$_2$S(Se)$_6$ system, which weakens the long range electric dipole interactions, and also provides, at high temperatures, a critical behavior near the Lifshitz point (studied by thermal diffusivity) similar to the one predicted in the case of systems with short range interactions. At low temperatures, a quantum critical behavior in Pb$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ crystal can be established by the nonlinear coupling between polar and antipolar fluctuations. An increase in thermal conductivity is induced by Ge impurity in Pb$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ crystal, which is explained through the weakening of the acoustic phonons resonance scattering by soft optic phonons because of the appearance of ferroelectric phase polar clusters.

Such the model considers first and second neighbor interactions for pseudospins in a local three-well potential. Below the temperature of tricritical Lifshitz point, the "chaotic" state accompanied by the coexistence of ferroelectric, metastable paraelectric and modulated phases is expected. In addition to the frustration of polar fluctuations near the Brillouin zone center, in Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ crystal the antipolar fluctuations also strongly develop in the paraelectric phase at cooling to continuous phase transition temperature $T_0$. Here, critical behavior can be described as a crossover between Ising and XY universality classes, what is expected near bicritical points with coupled polar and antipolar order parameters and competing instabilities in $q$-space.

The possibility of controlling the domain structure in spherical nanoparticles of uniaxial and multiaxial ferroelectrics using a shell with tunable dielectric properties is studied in the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory. Finite element modeling and analytical calculations are performed for Sn2P2S6 and BaTiO3 nanoparticles covered with high-k polymer, temperature dependent isotropic paraelectric strontium titanate, or anisotropic liquid crystal shells with a strongly temperature dependent dielectric permittivity tensor. It appeared that the tunable paraelectric shell with a temperature dependent high dielectric permittivity (~300 - 3000) provides much more efficient screening of the nanoparticle polarization than the polymer shell with a much smaller (~10) temperature-independent permittivity. The tunable dielectric anisotropy of the liquid crystal shell (~ 1 - 100) adds a new level of functionality for the control of ferroelectric domains morphology (including a single-domain state, domain stripes and cylinders, meandering and labyrinthine domains, and polarization flux-closure domains and vortexes) in comparison with isotropic paraelectric and polymer shells. The obtained results indicate the opportunities to control the domain structure morphology of ferroelectric nanoparticles covered with tunable shells, which can lead to the generation of new ferroelectric memory and advanced cryptographic materials.

The calculated pseudospin fluctuations spectra in ferroelectric phase demonstrate negative Grüneisen parameters for excitations that satisfy Curie-Weiss-like temperature and pressure dependencies in the vicinity of second order phase transition. Thermal expansion coefficient is calculated by evaluation of pseudospins entropy baric dependence. Negative thermal expansion in the ferroelectric phase of Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ crystal is obtained which is in agreement with observed experimental data.

Analytical description of domain structure morphology and phase diagrams of ferroelectric nanoparticles is developed in the framework of Landau Ginzburg Devonshire approach. To model realistic conditions of incomplete screening of spontaneous polarization at the particle surface, it was considered covered by an ultra-thin layer of screening charge with finite screening length. The phase diagrams, calculated for spherical Sn2P2S6 nanoparticles in coordinates "temperature vs surface screening length" by finite element modeling, demonstrate the emergence of polydomain region at the tricritical point and its broadening with increasing the screening length for the particle radius over a critical value. Metastable and stable labyrinthine domain structures exist in Sn2P2S6 nanoparticles with radius 8 and 10 nm and more, similarly to the case of CuInP2S6 nanoparticles considered previously. We derived simple analytical expressions for the boundaries between paraelectric, single-domain and poly-domain ferroelectric phases, tricritical point and the necessary condition for the appearance of labyrinthine domains, and demonstrated their high accuracy in comparison with finite element modeling results. Analytical description shows that phase diagrams and domain morphologies, which are qualitatively similar to the ones calculated in this work, can be expected in other ferroelectric nanoparticles covered by the screening charges, being rather different for the ferroelectrics with the first and second order ferroelectric-paraelectric transitions respectively.

In the framework of the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) approach we studied finite size effects of the phase diagram and domain structure evolution in spherical nanoparticles of uniaxial ferroelectric. The particle surface is covered by a layer of screening charge characterized by finite screening length. The phase diagram, calculated in coordinates "particle radius vs. screening length" has a wide region of versatile poly-domain structures separating single-domain ferroelectric and nonpolar paraelectric phases. Unexpectedly, we revealed a region of stable irregular labyrinthine domains in the nanoparticles of uniaxial ferroelectric CuInP2S6 with the first order paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition. We established that the origin of labyrinthine domains is the mutual balance of LGD, polarization gradient and electrostatic energies. The branching of the domain walls appears and increases rapidly when the polarization gradient energy decreases below the critical value. Allowing for the generality of LGD approach, we expect that the gradient-induced morphological transition can be the source of labyrinthine domains appearance in many spatially-confined ferroics with long-range order parameter, including relaxors, ferromagnetics, antiferrodistortive materials and materials with incommensurate ferroic phases.

Using the Landau Ginzburg Devonshire theory and scalar approximation, we derived analytical expressions for the singular points (zeros, complex ranges) of the acoustic phonon mode (A mode) frequency in dependence on the wave vector k and examined the conditions of the soft A modes appearance in a ferroelectric depending on the magnitude of the flexoelectric coefficient f and temperature T. We predict that if the magnitude of the flexocoefficient f is equal to the temperature-dependent critical value fcr(T) at the temperature T=T_IC, the A mode frequency tends to zero at k=kr_0 and the spontaneous polarization becomes spatially modulated in a temperature range T<T_IC.The comparison of calculated physical properties with measured ones are performed for some ferroelectrics with SMP phases. In particular, temperature dependence of the calculated direct and inverse static dielectric susceptibility is in an agreement with experimental data in Sn2P2(SexS1-x)6 that gives us additional background to predict flexo-coupling induced soft acoustic amplitudon-type mode in the SMP phase. The available experimental data on neutron scattering in organic incommensurate ferroelectric (CH3)3NCH2COO*CaCl2*2H2O are in a semi-quantitative agreement with our theoretical results. To quantify the theory, it is necessary to measure the frequency dependence of the A mode in a uniaxial ferroelectric with a spatially modulated phase in the temperature interval near its occurrence.

Within the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) theory we studied the role of the flexocoupling between the order parameter and elastic strain gradients in the stability of a spatially-modulated phase (SMP) in ferroics with commensurate and incommensurate long-range ordered phases under the presence of squired elastic strain gradient. The squired elastic strain gradient is required for the free energy stability to arbitrary strain gradients. Obtained analytical expressions showed that the fundamental upper limit for the magnitude of the static bulk flexoelectric effect strength, established by Yudin and Tagantsev under the absence of squired elastic strain gradient and higher order gradients terms, should be substituted by the temperature-dependent condition on the flexoelectric coupling strength under the presence of the gradient terms. Moreover, we established that the SMP appears and becomes stable in commensurate ferroics if the flexocoupling constant exceeds the critical value, defined by the reduced temperature, strain and order parameter gradients constants, striction and expansion coefficients in the LGD functional. We calculated the soft phonon dispersion in ferroics with commensurate and incommensurate long-range ordered phases allowing for the squired elastic strain gradient, as well as static and dynamic flexocoupling. Appeared that the dispersion for the optic mode is slightly sensitive to the flexocoupling, while the dispersion of acoustic mode strongly depends on the coupling strength. Obtained results demonstrate that the non-trivial differences in the dispersion of optic and acoustic modes appear under the change of flexocoupling constant.

Flexoelectric effect impact on the generalized susceptibility and soft phonons dispersion was not studied in the long-range ordered phases of ferroics. The gap in the knowledge motivated us to establish the impact of the flexocoupling on the correlation function of the long-range order parameter fluctuations in ferroelectric phase of ferroics with local disordering sources. Within Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach we obtained analytical expressions for the generalized susceptibility and phonon dispersion relations in the ferroelectric phase. Unexpectedly, the joint action of static and dynamic flexoelectric effect induces non-diagonal components of generalized susceptibility, which amplitude is proportional to the convolution of the spontaneous polarization with flexocoupling constants. The flexocoupling essentially broaden the k-spectrum of generalized susceptibility and so decreases the correlation radii, as well as leads to the additional "pushing away" of the optical and acoustic soft mode phonon branches. The contribution of spontaneous polarization via ferroelectric nonlinearity and electrostriction mechanisms can lead to both broadening and narrowing on the susceptibility k-spectrum. Due to the joint action of flexoelectric coupling and spontaneous polarization the degeneration of the transverse optic and acoustic modes disappears in the soft phonon spectrum in a ferroelectric phase in comparison with the spectra in a paraelectric phase. These effects have been studied quantitatively for ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate using realistic values of static and dynamic flexocouplings and cubic symmetry approximation for the elastic properties. Also we derived general expressions for correlation function for arbitrary symmetry, elastic and electrostrictive anisotropy.

For Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ ferroelectrics the second order phase transitions line is observed until reaching the tricritical point at transition temperature lowering to 250 K by compression. Observed temperature-pressure phase diagram agrees with simulated diagram by MC calculations based on early founded by DFT study local potential for Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ crystals. In addition to the tricritical point, the possibility of disordered and quadrupolar phases occurrence was shown. For mixed crystals with tin by lead substitution, the investigated ultrasound, hypersound and low frequency dielectric properties also reveal appearance of heterophase peculiarities at decreasing of ferroelectric transition temperature below so named "temperature waterline" near 250~K. The tricriticality at similar temperature level also appears in mixed crystals at sulfur by selenium substitution. Such behavior agree with Blume-Emery-Griffiths (BEG) model, that is appropriated for investigated ferroelectric system with three-well local potential for the order parameter (spontaneous polarization) fluctuations.

We have investigated non-equilibrium properties of proper uniaxial Sn$_2$P$_2$(Se$_x$S$_{1-x}$)$_6$ ferroelectrics with the Type II incommensurate phase above Lifshitz point $x_{\rm LP} \sim 0.28$. We measured dielectric susceptibility with cooling and heating rate ranging 0.002-0.1~K/min, and high-resolution ultrasound experiments and hypersound Brillouin scattering. For samples with $x \geqslant 0.28$ clear anomalies were observed at incommensurate second order transition ($T_i$) and at first order lock-in transition ($T_c$) in the regime of very slow cooling rate, whereas the intermediate IC phase is not observed when the rate is faster then 0.1~K/min. In general, increasing the cooling rate leads to smearing the anomaly at $T_c$. We explain this effect in terms of Kibble-Zurek model for non-equilibrium second order phase transitions. In the ferroelectrics with strongly nonlinear local potential cooling rate defines concentration of domain walls and their size: domain width decreases when cooling rate increases. At certain conditions the size of domain is comparable to the incommensurate phase modulation period, which lies in micrometer scale in the vicinity of Lifshitz point and leads to pinning of the modulation period by domain wall.

Ferroelectric phase transition in the semiconductor Sn2P2S6 single crystal has been studied by means of neutron scattering in the pressure-temperature range adjacent to the anticipated tricritical Lifshitz point (p=0.18GPa, T=296K). The observations reveal a direct ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition in the whole investigated pressure range (0.18 - 0.6GPa). These results are in a clear disagreement with phase diagrams assumed in numerous earlier works, according to which a hypothetical intermediate incommensurate phase extends over several or even tens of degrees in the 0.5GPa pressure range. Temperature dependence of the anisotropic quasielastic diffuse scattering suggests that polarization fluctuations present above TC are strongly reduced in the ordered phase. Still, the temperature dependence of the (200) Bragg reflection intensity at p=0.18GPa can be remarkably well modeled assuming the order-parameter amplitude growth according to the power law with logarithmic corrections predicted for a uniaxial ferroelectric transition at the tricritical Lifshitz point.

The interaction between soft optic and acoustic phonons was investigated for Sn2P2(Se0.28S0.72)6 proper uniaxial ferroelectrics by Brillouin scattering and ultrasonic pulse-echo techniques. The elastic softening of hypersound velocity of transverse acoustic phonons and for both longitudinal and transverse ultrasound waves which propagate near direction of the modulation wave vector (in the incommensurate phase at x>xLP) was found at cooling to the Lifshitz point in the paraelectric phase. The strong increase of the ultrasound attenuation have also been observed. Such phenomena are related to the linear interaction of the soft optic and acoustic branches in the region of relatively short-range hypersound waves and to the strongly developed long-range order parameter fluctuations in the ultrasound frequency range. The hypersound velocity temperature dependence was described within the Landau-Khalatnikov approximation for the ferroelectric phase.

In the middle part of the phase diagram (x=0.4-0.9) the dipolar glass phase has been observed. In boundary region between ferroelectric order and dipolar glass disorder with small amount of sulphur (x=0.2-0.25) at low temperatures the nonergodic relaxor phase appears.
