The diversity of interoperable implementations encouraged by the paradigm is key for a less centralized future, and it is made possible by the concept of DIDs. However, this leads to a kind of dilemma of choices, where practitioners are faced with the difficult decision of which methods to choose and support in their applications. Due to the decentralized development of DID method specifications and the overwhelming number of different choices, it is hard to get an overview. In this paper, we propose a taxonomy of DID methods with the goal to empower practitioners to make informed decisions when selecting DID methods. To that end, our taxonomy is designed to provide an overview of the current landscape while providing adoption-relevant characteristics. For this purpose, we rely on the Nickerson et al. methodology for taxonomy creation, utilizing both conceptual-to-empirical and empirical-to-conceptual approaches. During the iterative process, we collect and survey an extensive and potentially exhaustive list of around 160 DID methods from various sources. The taxonomy we arrive at uses a total of 7 dimensions and 22 characteristics to span the contemporary design space of DID methods from the perspective of a practitioner. In addition to elaborating on these characteristics, we also discuss how a practitioner can use the taxonomy to select suitable DID methods for a specific use case.

Harmful repercussions from sharing sensitive or personal data can hamper institutions' willingness to engage in data exchange. Thus, institutions consider Authenticity Enhancing Technologies (AETs) and Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs) to engage in Sovereign Data Exchange (SDE), i.e., sharing data with third parties without compromising their own or their users' data sovereignty. However, these technologies are often technically complex, which impedes their adoption. To support practitioners select PETs and AETs for SDE use cases and highlight SDE challenges researchers and practitioners should address, this study empirically constructs a challenge-oriented technology mapping. First, we compile challenges of SDE by conducting a systematic literature review and expert interviews. Second, we map PETs and AETs to the SDE challenges and identify which technologies can mitigate which challenges. We validate the mapping through investigator triangulation. Although the most critical challenge concerns data usage and access control, we find that the majority of PETs and AETs focus on data processing issues.

The ubiquitous application of emerging blockchain technology in numerous technological projects leads to a tremendous hype. The significantly high prices of digital currencies and initial coin offerings as the new funding approach has fostered the public perception of blockchain as a cure-all and driven the hype even further. In this evolution, a clear view of the reasonable application of blockchain technology is not given and therefore, the purposeful use of traditional technologies is undermined. To clarify this situation, we derive a novel decision model for evaluating the applicability of blockchain technology that considers two key factors: the remediation of central governance and the management of digital objects. Based on these key factors, we closely analyse the domain of identity management for conscious blockchain application. Finally, we examine uPort, Sovrin, and ShoCard as distinct projects in this scope with regard to the inevitable necessity to implement a blockchain by using our decision model.

This paper provides an overview of the Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) concept, focusing on four different components that we identified as essential to the architecture. Self-Sovereign Identity is enabled by the new development of blockchain technology. Through the trustless, decentralised database that is provided by a blockchain, classic Identity Management registration processes can be replaced. We start off by giving a simple overview of blockchain based SSI, introducing an architecture overview as well as relevant actors in such a system. We further distinguish two major approaches, namely the Identifier Registry Model and its extension the Claim Registry Model. Subsequently we discuss identifiers in such a system, presenting past research in the area and current approaches in SSI in the context of Zooko's Triangle. As the user of an SSI has to be linked with his digital identifier we also discuss authentication solutions. Most central to the concept of an SSI are the verifiable claims that are presented to relying parties. Resources in the field are only losely connected. We will provide a more coherent view of verifiable claims in regards to blockchain based SSI and clarify differences in the used terminology. Storage solutions for the verifiable claims, both on- and off-chain, are presented with their advantages and disadvantages.
