There has been significant recent interest in harnessing LLMs to control software systems through multi-step reasoning, planning and tool-usage. While some promising results have been obtained, application to specific domains raises several general issues including the control of specialized domain tools, the lack of existing datasets for training and evaluation, and the non-triviality of automated system evaluation and improvement. In this paper, we present a case-study where we examine these issues in the context of a specific domain. Specifically, we present an automated math visualizer and solver system for mathematical pedagogy. The system orchestrates mathematical solvers and math graphing tools to produce accurate visualizations from simple natural language commands. We describe the creation of specialized data-sets, and also develop an auto-evaluator to easily evaluate the outputs of our system by comparing them to ground-truth expressions. We have open sourced the data-sets and code for the proposed system.

Sketch2Prototype is an AI-based framework that transforms a hand-drawn sketch into a diverse set of 2D images and 3D prototypes through sketch-to-text, text-to-image, and image-to-3D stages. This framework, shown across various sketches, rapidly generates text, image, and 3D modalities for enhanced early-stage design exploration. We show that using text as an intermediate modality outperforms direct sketch-to-3D baselines for generating diverse and manufacturable 3D models. We find limitations in current image-to-3D techniques, while noting the value of the text modality for user-feedback and iterative design augmentation.

Engineering design is undergoing a transformative shift with the advent of AI, marking a new era in how we approach product, system, and service planning. Large language models have demonstrated impressive capabilities in enabling this shift. Yet, with text as their only input modality, they cannot leverage the large body of visual artifacts that engineers have used for centuries and are accustomed to. This gap is addressed with the release of multimodal vision-language models (VLMs), such as GPT-4V, enabling AI to impact many more types of tasks. Our work presents a comprehensive evaluation of VLMs across a spectrum of engineering design tasks, categorized into four main areas: Conceptual Design, System-Level and Detailed Design, Manufacturing and Inspection, and Engineering Education Tasks. Specifically in this paper, we assess the capabilities of two VLMs, GPT-4V and LLaVA 1.6 34B, in design tasks such as sketch similarity analysis, CAD generation, topology optimization, manufacturability assessment, and engineering textbook problems. Through this structured evaluation, we not only explore VLMs' proficiency in handling complex design challenges but also identify their limitations in complex engineering design applications. Our research establishes a foundation for future assessments of vision language models. It also contributes a set of benchmark testing datasets, with more than 1000 queries, for ongoing advancements and applications in this field.

Deep learning (DL) has shown unprecedented performance for many image analysis and image enhancement tasks. Yet, solving large-scale inverse problems like tomographic reconstruction remains challenging for DL. These problems involve non-local and space-variant integral transforms between the input and output domains, for which no efficient neural network models have been found. A prior attempt to solve such problems with supervised learning relied on a brute-force fully connected network and applied it to reconstruction for a $128^4$ system matrix size. This cannot practically scale to realistic data sizes such as $512^4$ and $512^6$ for three-dimensional data sets. Here we present a novel framework to solve such problems with deep learning by casting the original problem as a continuum of intermediate representations between the input and output data. The original problem is broken down into a sequence of simpler transformations that can be well mapped onto an efficient hierarchical network architecture, with exponentially fewer parameters than a generic network would need. We applied the approach to computed tomography (CT) image reconstruction for a $512^4$ system matrix size. To our knowledge, this enabled the first data-driven DL solver for full-size CT reconstruction without relying on the structure of direct (analytical) or iterative (numerical) inversion techniques. The proposed approach is applicable to other imaging problems such as emission and magnetic resonance reconstruction. More broadly, hierarchical DL opens the door to a new class of solvers for general inverse problems, which could potentially lead to improved signal-to-noise ratio, spatial resolution and computational efficiency in various areas.
