Abstract:
Perceptual processes are frequently multi-modal. This is the case of haptic perception. Data sets of visual and haptic sensory signals have been compiled in the past, especially when it comes to the exploration of textured surfaces. These data sets were intended to be used in natural and artificial perception studies and to provide training data sets for machine learning research. These data sets…

These data sets were typically acquired with rigid probes or artificial robotic fingers. Here, we collected visual, auditory, and haptic signals acquired when a human finger explored textured surfaces. We assessed the data set via machine learning classification techniques. Interestingly, multi-modal classification performance could reach 97% when haptic classification was around 80%.

This paper presents an analysis of parametric characterization of a motor driven tendon-sheath actuator system for use in upper limb augmentation for applications such as rehabilitation, therapy, and industrial automation. The double tendon sheath system, which uses two sets of cables (agonist and antagonist side) guided through a sheath, is considered to produce smooth and natural-looking movements of the arm. The exoskeleton is equipped with a single motor capable of controlling both the flexion and extension motions. One of the key challenges in the implementation of a double tendon sheath system is the possibility of slack in the tendon, which can impact the overall performance of the system. To address this issue, a robust mathematical model is developed and a comprehensive parametric study is carried out to determine the most effective strategies for overcoming the problem of slack and improving the transmission. The study suggests that incorporating a series spring into the system's tendon leads to a universally applicable design, eliminating the need for individual customization. The results also show that the slack in the tendon can be effectively controlled by changing the pretension, spring constant, and size and geometry of spool mounted on the axle of motor.

Continual learning has received a great deal of attention recently with several approaches being proposed. However, evaluations involve a diverse set of scenarios making meaningful comparison difficult. This work provides a systematic categorization of the scenarios and evaluates them within a consistent framework including strong baselines and state-of-the-art methods. The results provide an understanding of the relative difficulty of the scenarios and that simple baselines (Adagrad, L2 regularization, and naive rehearsal strategies) can surprisingly achieve similar performance to current mainstream methods. We conclude with several suggestions for creating harder evaluation scenarios and future research directions. The code is available at https://github.com/GT-RIPL/Continual-Learning-Benchmark
