It is unlikely that the discrete Fréchet distance between two curves of length $n$ can be computed in strictly subquadratic time. We thus consider the setting where one of the curves, $P$, is known in advance. In particular, we wish to construct data structures (distance oracles) of near-linear size that support efficient distance queries with respect to $P$ in sublinear time. Since there is evidence that this is impossible for query curves of length $Θ(n^α)$, for any $α> 0$, we focus on query curves of (small) constant length, for which we are able to devise distance oracles with the desired bounds.
We extend our tools to handle subcurves of the given curve, and even arbitrary vertex-to-vertex subcurves of a given geometric tree. That is, we construct an oracle that can quickly compute the distance between a short polygonal path (the query) and a path in the preprocessed tree between two query-specified vertices. Moreover, we define a new family of geometric graphs, $t$-local graphs (which strictly contains the family of geometric spanners with constant stretch), for which a similar oracle exists: we can preprocess a graph $G$ in the family, so that, given a query segment and a pair $u,v$ of vertices in $G$, one can quickly compute the smallest discrete Fréchet distance between the segment and any $(u,v)$-path in $G$. The answer is exact, if $t=1$, and approximate if $t>1$.

An eight-partition of a finite set of points (respectively, of a continuous mass distribution) in $\mathbb{R}^3$ consists of three planes that divide the space into $8$ octants, such that each open octant contains at most $1/8$ of the points (respectively, of the mass). In 1966, Hadwiger showed that any mass distribution in $\mathbb{R}^3$ admits an eight-partition; moreover, one can prescribe the normal direction of one of the three planes. The analogous result for finite point sets follows by a standard limit argument.
We prove the following variant of this result: Any mass distribution (or point set) in $\mathbb{R}^3$ admits an eight-partition for which the intersection of two of the planes is a line with a prescribed direction.
Moreover, we present an efficient algorithm for calculating an eight-partition of a set of $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^3$ (with prescribed normal direction of one of the planes) in time $O^{*}(n^{5/2})$.

It is widely believed that society is becoming increasingly polarized around important issues, a dynamic that does not align with common mathematical models of opinion formation in social networks. In particular, measures of polarization based on opinion variance are known to decrease over time in frameworks such as the popular DeGroot model. Complementing recent work that seeks to resolve this apparent inconsistency by modifying opinion models, we instead resolve the inconsistency by proposing changes to how polarization is quantified.
We present a natural class of group-based polarization measures that capture the extent to which opinions are clustered into distinct groups. Using theoretical arguments and empirical evidence, we show that these group-based measures display interesting, non-monotonic dynamics, even in the simple DeGroot model. In particular, for many natural social networks, group-based metrics can increase over time, and thereby correctly capture perceptions of increasing polarization.
Our results build on work by DeMarzo et al., who introduced a group-based polarization metric based on ideological alignment. We show that a central tool from that work, a limit analysis of individual opinions under the DeGroot model, can be extended to the dynamics of other group-based polarization measures, including established statistical measures like bimodality.
We also consider local measures of polarization that operationalize how polarization is perceived in a network setting. In conjunction with evidence from prior work that group-based measures better align with real-world perceptions of polarization, our work provides formal support for the use of these measures in place of variance-based polarization in future studies of opinion dynamics.

Vision plays a crucial role in comprehending the world around us. More than 85% of the external information is obtained through the vision system. It influences our mobility, cognition, information access, and interaction with the environment and other people. Blindness prevents a person from gaining knowledge of the surrounding environment and makes unassisted navigation, object recognition, obstacle avoidance, and reading tasks significant challenges. Many existing systems are often limited by cost and complexity. To help the visually challenged overcome these difficulties faced in everyday life, we propose VisBuddy, a smart assistant to help the visually challenged with their day-to-day activities. VisBuddy is a voice-based assistant where the user can give voice commands to perform specific tasks. It uses the techniques of image captioning for describing the user's surroundings, optical character recognition (OCR) for reading the text in the user's view, object detection to search and find the objects in a room and web scraping to give the user the latest news. VisBuddy has been built by combining the concepts from Deep Learning and the Internet of Things. Thus, VisBuddy serves as a cost-efficient, powerful, all-in-one assistant for the visually challenged by helping them with their day-to-day activities.
