Animal behavior serves as a reliable indicator of the adaptation of organisms to their environment and their overall well-being. Through rigorous observation of animal actions and interactions, researchers and observers can glean valuable insights into diverse facets of their lives, encompassing health, social dynamics, ecological relationships, and neuroethological dimensions. Although state-of-the-art deep learning models have demonstrated remarkable accuracy in classifying various forms of animal data, their adoption in animal behavior studies remains limited. This survey article endeavors to comprehensively explore deep learning architectures and strategies applied to the identification of animal behavior, spanning auditory, visual, and audiovisual methodologies. Furthermore, the manuscript scrutinizes extant animal behavior datasets, offering a detailed examination of the principal challenges confronting this research domain. The article culminates in a comprehensive discussion of key research directions within deep learning that hold potential for advancing the field of animal behavior studies.

The design and optimization of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) are key challenges for future wireless communication systems. RISs are devices that can manipulate electromagnetic (EM) waves in a programmable way, thus enhancing the performance and efficiency of wireless links. To achieve this goal, it is essential to have reliable EM models that can capture the behavior of RISs in different scenarios. This work demonstrates that the Partial Elements Equivalent Circuit (PEEC) method is a powerful tool for EM analysis of RIS-aided wireless links. It might also be integrated with optimization algorithms in order to optimize wireless communication networks.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) modeling and optimization are a crucial steps in developing the next generation of wireless communications. To this aim, the availability of accurate electromagnetic (EM) models is of paramount important for the design of RIS-assisted communication links. In this work, we validate a widely-used analytical multiport network for RISs by means of a well-established full-wave numerical method based on the Partial Elements Equivalent Circuit (PEEC) approach. Numerical results show good agreement between the two methods, thus demonstrating i) the considered multiport network model being effective and ii) the PEEC method being appropriate for EM modeling of RIS-assisted wireless links.

Water monitoring is crucial for environmental monitoring, transportation, energy and telecommunication. One of the main problems in aquatic environmental monitoring is biofouling. The simplest method among the current antifouling strategies is the use of wiper technologies like brushes and wipers which apply mechanical pressure. In designing built-in strategies however, manufacturers usually build the sensor around the biofouling system. The current state-of-the-art is a fully integrated central wiper in the sensor that enables cleaning of all probes mounted on the sonde. Improvements in antifouling strategies lag rapid advancements in sensor technologies such as in miniaturization, specialization, and costs. Hence, improving built-in designs by decreasing size and complexity will decrease maintenance and overall costs.
This design is targeted for the EU project Robocoenosis since bio-hybrid systems in this project incorporate living organisms. This technology targets selective proliferation of the organisms which only prevents biofilms on components where they are unwanted. Beyond this, the use of autonomous activation based on image processing may likely be advantageous for minimizing the need for human inspection and maintenance. In addition to Robocoenosis, we also aim at incorporating this design in another project entitled Heterogeneous Swarm of Underwater Autonomous Vehicles where a swarm of heterogeneous underwater robotic fish is being developed.

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) must always have a safe motion to guarantee that they are not causing any accidents. In an AV system, the motion of the vehicle is represented as a trajectory. A trajectory planning component is responsible to compute such a trajectory at run-time, taking into account the perception information about the environment, the dynamics of the vehicles, the predicted future states of other road users and a number of safety aspects.
Due to the enormous amount of information to be considered, trajectory planning algorithms are complex, which makes it non-trivial to guarantee the safety of all planned trajectories. In this way, it is necessary to have an extra component to assess the safety of the planned trajectories at run-time. Such trajectory safety assessment component gives a diverse observation on the safety of AV trajectories and ensures that the AV only follows safe trajectories. We use the term trajectory checker to refer to the trajectory safety assessment component. The trajectory checker must evaluate planned trajectories against various safety rules, taking into account a large number of possibilities, including the worst-case behavior of other traffic participants. This must be done while guaranteeing hard real-time performance since the safety assessment is carried out while the vehicle is moving and in constant interaction with the environment.
In this paper, we present a prototype of the trajectory checker we have developed at IVEX. We show how our approach works smoothly and accomplishes real-time constraints embedded in an Infineon Aurix TC397B automotive platform. Finally, we measure the performance of our trajectory checker prototype against a set of NCAPS-inspired scenarios.

Automated machine learning (AutoML) and deep learning (DL) are two cutting-edge paradigms used to solve a myriad of inductive learning tasks. In spite of their successes, little guidance exists for when to choose one approach over the other in the context of specific real-world problems. Furthermore, relatively few tools exist that allow the integration of both AutoML and DL in the same analysis to yield results combining both of their strengths. Here, we seek to address both of these issues, by (1.) providing a head-to-head comparison of AutoML and DL in the context of binary classification on 6 well-characterized public datasets, and (2.) evaluating a new tool for genetic programming-based AutoML that incorporates deep estimators. Our observations suggest that AutoML outperforms simple DL classifiers when trained on similar datasets for binary classification but integrating DL into AutoML improves classification performance even further. However, the substantial time needed to train AutoML+DL pipelines will likely outweigh performance advantages in many applications.

The world of competitive Esports and video gaming has seen and continues to experience steady growth in popularity and complexity. Correspondingly, more research on the topic is being published, ranging from social network analyses to the benchmarking of advanced artificial intelligence systems in playing against humans. In this paper, we present ongoing work on an intelligent agent recommendation engine that suggests actions to players in order to maximise success and enjoyment, both in the space of in-game choices, as well as decisions made around play session timing in the broader context. By leveraging temporal data and appropriate models, we show that a learned representation of player psychological momentum, and of tilt, can be used, in combination with player expertise, to achieve state-of-the-art performance in pre- and post-draft win prediction. Our progress toward fulfilling the potential for deriving optimal recommendations is documented.

The main outcome of such approach is that the algorithm is described by using a set of operators which are related to each other according to the problem decomposition. Decomposition level determines the granularity of the algorithm. A set of block matrices (decomposition and execution) highlights fundamental characteristics of the algorithm, such as inherent parallelism and sources of overheads.
