As an increasingly large number of people turn to platforms like Reddit, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, etc. for financial advice, generating insights about the content generated and interactions taking place within these platforms have become a key research question. This study proposes content and interaction analysis techniques for a large repository created from social media content, where people interactions are centered around financial information exchange. We propose methods for content analysis that can generate human-interpretable insights using topic-centered clustering and multi-document abstractive summarization. We share details of insights generated from our experiments with a large repository of data gathered from subreddit for personal finance. We have also explored the use of ChatGPT and Vicuna for generating responses to queries and compared them with human responses. The methods proposed in this work are generic and applicable to all large social media platforms.

This study proposes content and interaction analysis techniques for a large repository created from social media content. Though we have presented our study for a large platform dedicated to discussions around financial topics, the proposed methods are generic and applicable to all platforms. Along with an extension of topic extraction method using Latent Dirichlet Allocation, we propose a few measures to assess user participation, influence and topic affinities specifically. Our study also maps user-generated content to components of behavioral finance. While these types of information are usually gathered through surveys, it is obvious that large scale data analysis from social media can reveal many potentially unknown or rare insights. Characterising users based on their platform behavior to provide critical insights about how communities are formed and trust is established in these platforms using graphical analysis is also studied.

There is an urgent need to control global warming caused by humans to achieve a sustainable future. $CO_2$ levels are rising steadily and while countries worldwide are actively moving toward the sustainability goals proposed during the Paris Agreement in 2015, we are still a long way to go from achieving a sustainable mode of global operation. The increased popularity of cryptocurrencies since the introduction of Bitcoin in 2009 has been accompanied by an increasing trend in greenhouse gas emissions and high electrical energy consumption. Popular energy tracking studies (e.g., Digiconomist and the Cambridge Bitcoin Energy Consumption Index (CBECI)) have estimated energy consumption ranges of 29.96 TWh to 135.12 TWh and 26.41 TWh to 176.98 TWh respectively for Bitcoin as of July 2021, which are equivalent to the energy consumption of countries such as Sweden and Thailand. The latest estimate by Digiconomist on carbon footprints shows a 64.18 Mt$CO_2$ emission by Bitcoin as of July 2021, close to the emissions by Greece and Oman. This review compiles estimates made by various studies from 2018 to 2021. We compare with the energy consumption and carbon footprints of these cryptocurrencies with countries around the world, and centralized transaction methods such as Visa. We identify the problems associated with cryptocurrencies, and propose solutions that can help reduce their energy usage and carbon footprints. Finally, we present case studies on cryptocurrency networks namely, Ethereum 2.0 and Pi Network, with a discussion on how they solve some of the challenges we have identified.

Technical debt (TD) refers to suboptimal choices during software development that achieve short-term goals at the expense of long-term quality. Although developers often informally discuss TD, the concept has not yet crystalized into a consistently applied label when describing issues in most repositories. We apply machine learning to understand developer insights into TD when discussing tickets in an issue tracker. We generate expert labels that indicate whether discussion of TD occurs in the free text associated with each ticket in a sample of more than 1,900 tickets in the Chromium issue tracker. We then use these labels to train a classifier that estimates labels for the remaining 475,000 tickets. We conclude that discussion of TD appears in about 16% of the tracked Chromium issues. If we can effectively classify TD-related issues, we can focus on what practices could be most useful for their timely resolution.

As the proportion of road accidents increases each year, driver distraction continues to be an important risk component in road traffic injuries and deaths. The distractions caused by the increasing use of mobile phones and other wireless devices pose a potential risk to road safety. Our current study aims to aid the already existing techniques in driver posture recognition by improving the performance in the driver distraction classification problem. We present an approach using a genetic algorithm-based ensemble of six independent deep neural architectures, namely, AlexNet, VGG-16, EfficientNet B0, Vanilla CNN, Modified DenseNet, and InceptionV3 + BiLSTM. We test it on two comprehensive datasets, the AUC Distracted Driver Dataset, on which our technique achieves an accuracy of 96.37%, surpassing the previously obtained 95.98%, and on the State Farm Driver Distraction Dataset, on which we attain an accuracy of 99.75%. The 6-Model Ensemble gave an inference time of 0.024 seconds as measured on our machine with Ubuntu 20.04(64-bit) and GPU as GeForce GTX 1080.

The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown natural life out of gear across the globe. Strict measures are deployed to curb the spread of the virus that is causing it, and the most effective of them have been social isolation. This has led to wide-spread gloom and depression across society but more so among the young and the elderly. There are currently more than 200 million college students in 186 countries worldwide, affected due to the pandemic. The mode of education has changed suddenly, with the rapid adaptation of e-learning, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital platforms. This study presents insights gathered from social media posts that were posted by students and young adults during the COVID times. Using statistical and NLP techniques, we analyzed the behavioral issues reported by users themselves in their posts in depression-related communities on Reddit. We present methodologies to systematically analyze content using linguistic techniques to find out the stress-inducing factors. Online education, losing jobs, isolation from friends, and abusive families emerge as key stress factors.
