Machine anomalous sound detection (ASD) has emerged as one of the most promising applications in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) due to its unprecedented efficacy in mitigating risks of malfunctions and promoting production efficiency. Previous works mainly investigated the machine ASD task under centralized settings. However, developing the ASD system under decentralized settings is crucial in practice, since the machine data are dispersed in various factories and the data should not be explicitly shared due to privacy concerns. To enable these factories to cooperatively develop a scalable ASD model while preserving their privacy, we propose a novel framework named CoopASD, where each factory trains an ASD model on its local dataset, and a central server aggregates these local models periodically. We employ a pre-trained model as the backbone of the ASD model to improve its robustness and develop specialized techniques to stabilize the model under a completely non-iid and domain shift setting. Compared with previous state-of-the-art (SOTA) models trained in centralized settings, CoopASD showcases competitive results with negligible degradation of 0.08%. We also conduct extensive ablation studies to demonstrate the effectiveness of CoopASD.

Deep learning (DL)-based channel state information (CSI) feedback has the potential to improve the recovery accuracy and reduce the feedback overhead in massive multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems. However, the length of input CSI and the number of feedback bits should be adjustable in different scenarios, which can not be efficiently achieved by the existing CSI feedback models. Therefore, an adaptive bidirectional long short-term memory network (ABLNet) for CSI feedback is first designed to process various input CSI lengths, where the number of feedback bits is in proportion to the CSI length. Then, to realize a more flexible feedback bit number, a feedback bit control unit (FBCU) module is proposed to control the output length of feedback bits. Based on which, a target feedback performance can be adaptively achieved by a designed bit number adjusting (BNA) algorithm. Furthermore, a novel separate training approach is devised to solve the model protection problem that the UE and gNB are from different manufacturers. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed ABLNet with FBCU can fit for different input CSI lengths and feedback bit numbers; the CSI feedback performance can be stabilized by the BNA algorithm; and the proposed separate training approach can maintain the feedback performance and reduce the complexity of feedback model.

Vehicular edge computing (VEC) is an emerging technology with significant potential in the field of internet of vehicles (IoV), enabling vehicles to perform intensive computational tasks locally or offload them to nearby edge devices. However, the quality of communication links may be severely deteriorated due to obstacles such as buildings, impeding the offloading process. To address this challenge, we introduce the use of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS), which provide alternative communication pathways to assist vehicular communication. By dynamically adjusting the phase-shift of the RIS, the performance of VEC systems can be substantially improved. In this work, we consider a RIS-assisted VEC system, and design an optimal scheme for local execution power, offloading power, and RIS phase-shift, where random task arrivals and channel variations are taken into account. To address the scheme, we propose an innovative deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework that combines the Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) algorithm for optimizing RIS phase-shift coefficients and the Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (MADDPG) algorithm for optimizing the power allocation of vehicle user (VU). Simulation results show that our proposed scheme outperforms the traditional centralized DDPG, Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (TD3) and some typical stochastic schemes.

Autonomous driving may be the most important application scenario of next generation, the development of wireless access technologies enabling reliable and low-latency vehicle communication becomes crucial. To address this, 3GPP has developed Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) specifications based on 5G New Radio (NR) technology, where Mode 2 Side-Link (SL) communication resembles Mode 4 in LTE-V2X, allowing direct communication between vehicles. This supplements SL communication in LTE-V2X and represents the latest advancement in cellular V2X (C-V2X) with improved performance of NR-V2X. However, in NR-V2X Mode 2, resource collisions still occur, and thus degrade the age of information (AOI). Therefore, a interference cancellation method is employed to mitigate this impact by combining NR-V2X with Non-Orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technology. In NR-V2X, when vehicles select smaller resource reservation interval (RRI), higher-frequency transmissions take ore energy to reduce AoI. Hence, it is important to jointly consider AoI and communication energy consumption based on NR-V2X communication. Then, we formulate such an optimization problem and employ the Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithm to compute the optimal transmission RRI and transmission power for each transmitting vehicle to reduce the energy consumption of each transmitting vehicle and the AoI of each receiving vehicle. Extensive simulations have demonstrated the performance of our proposed algorithm.

Large pre-trained models have demonstrated dominant performances in multiple areas, where the consistency between pre-training and fine-tuning is the key to success. However, few works reported satisfactory results of pre-trained models for the machine anomalous sound detection (ASD) task. This may be caused by the inconsistency of the pre-trained model and the inductive bias of machine audio, resulting in inconsistency in data and architecture. Thus, we propose AnoPatch which utilizes a ViT backbone pre-trained on AudioSet and fine-tunes it on machine audio. It is believed that machine audio is more related to audio datasets than speech datasets, and modeling it from patch level suits the sparsity of machine audio. As a result, AnoPatch showcases state-of-the-art (SOTA) performances on the DCASE 2020 ASD dataset and the DCASE 2023 ASD dataset. We also compare multiple pre-trained models and empirically demonstrate that better consistency yields considerable improvement.

However, obstacles such as buildings may degrade the communications and incur communication interruptions, and thus the vehicle may not meet the requirement for task offloading. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) is introduced to support vehicle communication and provide an alternative communication path. The system performance can be improved by flexibly adjusting the phase-shift of the RIS. For RIS-assisted VEC system where tasks arrive randomly, we design a control scheme that considers offloading power, local power allocation and phase-shift optimization. To solve this non-convex problem, we propose a new deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework that employs modified multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG) approach to optimize the power allocation for vehicle users (VUs) and block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm to optimize the phase-shift of the RIS. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) is a pivotal technology in communication, offering an alternative path that significantly enhances the link quality in wireless communication environments. In this paper, we propose a RIS-assisted internet of vehicles (IoV) network, considering the vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication method. In addition, in order to improve the timeliness of vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) links and the stability of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) links, we introduce the age of information (AoI) model and the payload transmission probability model. Therefore, with the objective of minimizing the AoI of V2I links and prioritizing transmission of V2V links payload, we construct this optimization problem as an Markov decision process (MDP) problem in which the BS serves as an agent to allocate resources and control phase-shift for the vehicles using the soft actor-critic (SAC) algorithm, which gradually converges and maintains a high stability. A AoI-aware joint vehicular resource allocation and RIS phase-shift control scheme based on SAC algorithm is proposed and simulation results show that its convergence speed, cumulative reward, AoI performance, and payload transmission probability outperforms those of proximal policy optimization (PPO), deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG), twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) and stochastic algorithms.

This letter proposes a semantic-aware resource allocation (SARA) framework with flexible duty cycle (DC) coexistence mechanism (SARADC) for 5G-V2X Heterogeneous Network (HetNets) based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) proximal policy optimization (PPO). Specifically, we investigate V2X networks within a two-tiered HetNets structure. In response to the needs of high-speed vehicular networking in urban environments, we design a semantic communication system and introduce two resource allocation metrics: high-speed semantic transmission rate (HSR) and semantic spectrum efficiency (HSSE). Our main goal is to maximize HSSE. Additionally, we address the coexistence of vehicular users and WiFi users in 5G New Radio Unlicensed (NR-U) networks. To tackle this complex challenge, we propose a novel approach that jointly optimizes flexible DC coexistence mechanism and the allocation of resources and base stations (BSs). Unlike traditional bit transmission methods, our approach integrates the semantic communication paradigm into the communication system. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed solution outperforms traditional bit transmission methods with traditional DC coexistence mechanism in terms of HSSE and semantic throughput (ST) for both vehicular and WiFi users.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is viewed as a key technology in future wireless networks. One of the main challenges in realizing ISAC is developing dual-functional waveforms that can communicate with communication receivers and perform radar sensing simultaneously. In this paper, we consider the joint design of a dual-functional orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) signal and a receiving filter for the ISAC system. The problem of ISAC waveform design is formulated as the minimization of the weighted integrated sidelobe level (WISL) of the ambiguity function and the interference term from ISAC waveform, with constraints on signal-to-noise ratio loss. The majorization-minimization algorithm combined with alternating iterative minimization is implemented to solve the optimization problem. Simulation results show that the WISL and the interference term can be significantly decreased to guarantee achievable data rates and detection performance.

Multiple access techniques are fundamental to the design of wireless communication systems, since many crucial components of such systems depend on the choice of the multiple access technique. Because of the importance of multiple access, there has been an ongoing quest during the past decade to develop next generation multiple access (NGMA). Among those potential candidates for NGMA, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has received significant attention from both the industrial and academic research communities, and has been highlighted in the recently published International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT)-2030 Framework. However, there is still no consensus in the research community about how exactly NOMA assisted NGMA should be designed. This perspective is to outline three important features of NOMA assisted NGMA, namely multi-domain utilization, multi-mode compatibility, and multi-dimensional optimality, where important directions for future research into the design of NOMA assisted NGMA are also discussed.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has become a promising technology for future communication system. In this paper, we consider a millimeter wave system over high mobility scenario, and propose a novel simultaneous transmission and reflection reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) aided ISAC scheme. To improve the communication service of the in-vehicle user equipment (UE) and simultaneously track and sense the vehicle with the help of nearby roadside units (RSUs), a STAR-RIS is equipped on the outside surface of the vehicle. Firstly, an efficient transmission structure is developed, where a number of training sequences with orthogonal precoders and combiners are respectively utilized at BS and RSUs for channel parameter extraction. Then, the near-field static channel model between the STAR-RIS and in-vehicle UE as well as the far-field time-frequency selective BS-RIS-RSUs channel model are characterized. By utilizing the multidimensional orthogonal matching pursuit (MOMP) algorithm, the cascaded channel parameters of the BS-RIS-RSUs links can be obtained at the RSUs. Thus, the vehicle localization and its velocity measurement can be acquired by jointly utilizing these extracted cascaded channel parameters of all RSUs. Note that the MOMP algorithm can be further utilized to extract the channel parameters of the BS-RIS-UE link for communication. With the help of sensing results, the phase shifts of the STAR-RIS are delicately designed, which can significantly improve the received signal strength for both the RSUs and the in-vehicle UE, and can finally enhance the sensing and communication performance. Moreover, the trade-off for sensing and communication is designed by optimizing the energy splitting factors of the STAR-RIS. Finally, simulation results are provided to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of our proposed STAR-RIS aided ISAC scheme.

Channel capacity estimation plays a crucial role in beyond 5G intelligent communications. Despite its significance, this task is challenging for a majority of channels, especially for the complex channels not modeled as the well-known typical ones. Recently, neural networks have been used in mutual information estimation and optimization. They are particularly considered as efficient tools for learning channel capacity. In this paper, we propose a cooperative framework to simultaneously estimate channel capacity and design the optimal codebook. First, we will leverage MIM-based GAN, a novel form of generative adversarial network (GAN) using message importance measure (MIM) as the information distance, into mutual information estimation, and develop a novel method, named MIM-based mutual information estimator (MMIE). Then, we design a generalized cooperative framework for channel capacity learning, in which a generator is regarded as an encoder producing the channel input, while a discriminator is the mutual information estimator that assesses the performance of the generator. Through the adversarial training, the generator automatically learns the optimal codebook and the discriminator estimates the channel capacity. Numerical experiments will demonstrate that compared with several conventional estimators, the MMIE achieves state-of-the-art performance in terms of accuracy and stability.

Vehicular edge computing (VEC) is a promising technology to support real-time vehicular applications, where vehicles offload intensive computation tasks to the nearby VEC server for processing. However, the traditional VEC that relies on single communication technology cannot well meet the communication requirement for task offloading, thus the heterogeneous VEC integrating the advantages of dedicated short-range communications (DSRC), millimeter-wave (mmWave) and cellular-based vehicle to infrastructure (C-V2I) is introduced to enhance the communication capacity. The communication resource allocation and computation resource allocation may significantly impact on the ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) performance and the VEC system utility, in this case, how to do the resource allocations is becoming necessary. In this paper, we consider a heterogeneous VEC with multiple communication technologies and various types of tasks, and propose an effective resource allocation policy to minimize the system utility while satisfying the URLLC requirement. We first formulate an optimization problem to minimize the system utility under the URLLC constraint which modeled by the moment generating function (MGF)-based stochastic network calculus (SNC), then we present a Lyapunov-guided deep reinforcement learning (DRL) method to convert and solve the optimization problem. Next-generation vehicular networks are expected to provide the capability of robust environmental sensing in addition to reliable communications to meet intelligence requirements. A promising solution is the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technology, which performs both functionalities using the same spectrum and hardware resources. Most existing works on ISAC consider the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) waveform. Nevertheless, vehicle motion introduces Doppler shift, which breaks the subcarrier orthogonality and leads to performance degradation. The recently proposed Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation, which exploits various advantages of Delay Doppler (DD) channels, has been shown to support reliable communication in high-mobility scenarios. Moreover, the DD waveform can directly interact with radar sensing parameters, which are actually delay and Doppler shifts. This paper investigates the advantages of applying the DD communication waveform to ISAC. Specifically, we first provide a comprehensive overview of implementing DD communications, based on which several advantages of DD-ISAC over OFDM-based ISAC are revealed, including transceiver designs and the ambiguity function. Furthermore, a detailed performance comparison are presented, where the target detection probability and the mean squared error (MSE) performance are also studied. Recently, Conformer as a backbone network for end-to-end automatic speech recognition achieved state-of-the-art performance. The Conformer block leverages a self-attention mechanism to capture global information, along with a convolutional neural network to capture local information, resulting in improved performance. However, the Conformer-based model encounters an issue with the self-attention mechanism, as computational complexity grows quadratically with the length of the input sequence. Inspired by previous Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC) guided blank skipping during decoding, we introduce intermediate CTC outputs as guidance into the downsampling procedure of the Conformer encoder. We define the frame with non-blank output as key frame. Specifically, we introduce the key frame-based self-attention (KFSA) mechanism, a novel method to reduce the computation of the self-attention mechanism using key frames. The structure of our proposed approach comprises two encoders. Following the initial encoder, we introduce an intermediate CTC loss function to compute the label frame, enabling us to extract the key frames and blank frames for KFSA. Furthermore, we introduce the key frame-based downsampling (KFDS) mechanism to operate on high-dimensional acoustic features directly and drop the frames corresponding to blank labels, which results in new acoustic feature sequences as input to the second encoder. By using the proposed method, which achieves comparable or higher performance than vanilla Conformer and other similar work such as Efficient Conformer. Meantime, our proposed method can discard more than 60\% useless frames during model training and inference, which will accelerate the inference speed significantly. Vehicles in platoons need to process many tasks to support various real-time vehicular applications. When a task arrives at a vehicle, the vehicle may not process the task due to its limited computation resource. In this case, it usually requests to offload the task to other vehicles in the platoon for processing. However, when the computation resources of all the vehicles in the platoon are insufficient, the task cannot be processed in time through offloading to the other vehicles in the platoon. Vehicular fog computing (VFC)-assisted platoon can solve this problem through offloading the task to the VFC which is formed by the vehicles driving near the platoon. Offloading delay is an important performance metric, which is impacted by both the offloading strategy for deciding where the task is offloaded and the number of the allocated vehicles in VFC to process the task. Thus, it is critical to propose an offloading strategy to minimize the offloading delay. In the VFC-assisted platoon system, vehicles usually adopt the IEEE 802.11p distributed coordination function (DCF) mechanism while having various computation resources. Moreover, when vehicles arrive and depart the VFC randomly, their tasks also arrive at and depart the system randomly. In this paper, we propose a semi-Markov decision process (SMDP) based offloading strategy while considering these factors to obtain the maximal long-term reward reflecting the offloading delay. With respect to the proposed MLSD, we introduce a new family of power-imbalanced dense codebooks by deleting certain rows of a special non-unimodular circulant matrix. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed dense codebooks lead to both larger minimum Euclidean distance and MLSD, thus yielding significant improvements of error performance over the existing sparse code multiple access and conventional unimodular DCMA schemes in Nakagami-$m$ fading channels under different overloading factors.

Uplink rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) requires optimization of decoding order and power allocation, while decoding order is a discrete variable, and it is very complex to find the optimal decoding order if the number of users is large enough. This letter proposes a low-complexity user pairing-based resource allocation algorithm with the objective of minimizing the maximum latency. Closed-form expressions for power and bandwidth allocation for a given latency are first derived. Then a bisection method is used to determine the minimum latency and optimal resource allocation. Finally, the proposed algorithm is compared with unpaired RSMA using an exhaustive method to obtain the optimal decoding order, unpaired RSMA using a suboptimal decoding order, paired non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and unpaired NOMA. The results show that our proposed algorithm outperforms NOMA and achieves similar performance to unpaired RSMA. In addition, the complexity of the proposed algorithm is significantly reduced.

This study aims to investigate the utilization of Bayesian techniques for the calibration of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) accelerometers. These devices have garnered substantial interest in various practical applications and typically require calibration through error-correcting functions. The parameters of these error-correcting functions are determined during a calibration process. However, due to various sources of noise, these parameters cannot be determined with precision, making it desirable to incorporate uncertainty in the calibration models. Bayesian modeling offers a natural and complete way of reflecting uncertainty by treating the model parameters as variables rather than fixed values. Additionally, Bayesian modeling enables the incorporation of prior knowledge, making it an ideal choice for calibration. Nevertheless, it is infrequently used in sensor calibration. This study introduces Bayesian methods for the calibration of MEMS accelerometer data in a straightforward manner using recent advances in probabilistic programming.

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) technique is becoming increasingly popular to improve the efficiency and safety of air traffic control (ATC) operations. However, the conversation between ATC controllers and pilots using multilingual speech brings a great challenge to building high-accuracy ASR systems. In this work, we present a two-stage multilingual ASR framework. The first stage is to train a language identifier (LID), that based on a recurrent neural network (RNN) to obtain sentence language identification in the form of one-hot encoding. The second stage aims to train an RNN-based end-to-end multilingual recognition model that utilizes sentence language features generated by LID to enhance input features. In this work, We introduce Featurewise Linear Modulation (FiLM) to improve the performance of multilingual ASR by utilizing sentence language identification. Furthermore, we introduce a new sentence language identification learning module called SLIL, which consists of a FiLM layer and a Squeeze-and-Excitation Networks layer. Extensive experiments on the ATCSpeech dataset show that our proposed method outperforms the baseline model. Compared to the vanilla FiLMed backbone model, the proposed multilingual ASR model obtains about 7.50% character error rate relative performance improvement.

Automatic detection of machine anomaly remains challenging for machine learning. We believe the capability of generative adversarial network (GAN) suits the need of machine audio anomaly detection, yet rarely has this been investigated by previous work. In this paper, we propose AEGAN-AD, a totally unsupervised approach in which the generator (also an autoencoder) is trained to reconstruct input spectrograms. It is pointed out that the denoising nature of reconstruction deprecates its capacity. Thus, the discriminator is redesigned to aid the generator during both training stage and detection stage. The performance of AEGAN-AD on the dataset of DCASE 2022 Challenge TASK 2 demonstrates the state-of-the-art result on five machine types. A novel anomaly localization method is also investigated. Free-space optical communication (FSO) can achieve fast, secure and license-free communication without need for physical cables, making it a cost-effective, energy-efficient and flexible solution when the fiber connection is unavailable. To establish FSO connection on-demand, it is essential to build portable FSO devices with compact structure and light weight. Here, we develop a miniaturized FSO system and realize 9.16 Gbps FSO between two nodes that is 1 km apart, using a commercial single-mode-fiber-coupled optical transceiver module without optical amplification. Using our 4-stage acquisition, pointing and tracking (APT) systems, the tracking error is within 3 μrad and results an average link loss of 13.7 dB, which is the key for this high-bandwidth FSO demonstration without optical amplification. Our FSO link has been tested up to 4 km, with link loss of 18 dB that is limited by the foggy weather during the test. Longer FSO distances can be expected with better weather condition and optical amplification. With single FSO device weight of only 9.5 kg, this result arouses massive applications of field-deployable high-speed wireless communication.

This paper investigates the robust and secure task transmission and computation scheme in multi-antenna unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) networks, where the UAV is dual-function, i.e., aerial MEC and aerial relay. The channel uncertainty is considered during information offloading and downloading. An energy consumption minimization problem is formulated under some constraints including users' quality of service and information security requirements and the UAV's trajectory's causality, by jointly optimizing the CPU frequency, the offloading time, the beamforming vectors, the artificial noise and the trajectory of the UAV, as well as the CPU frequency, the offloading time and the transmission power of each user. To solve the non-convex problem, a reformulated problem is first derived by a series of convex reformation methods, i.e., semi-definite relaxation, S-Procedure and first-order approximation, and then, solved by a proposed successive convex approximation (SCA)-based algorithm. The convergence performance and computational complexity of the proposed algorithm are analyzed. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperform existing benchmark schemes. Besides, the proposed SCA-based algorithm is superior to traditional alternative optimization-based algorithm.

Since the range and velocity, which can be derived from the delay and Doppler shifts, are the parameters of interest for radar sensing, it is natural to consider implementing DD signal processing for radar sensing. In this paper, we investigate the potential connections between the OTFS and DD domain radar signal processing. Our analysis shows that the range-Doppler matrix computing process in radar sensing is exactly the demodulation of OTFS with a rectangular pulse shaping filter. Furthermore, we propose a two-dimensional (2D) correlation-based algorithm to estimate the fractional delay and Doppler parameters for radar sensing. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can efficiently obtain the delay and Doppler shifts associated with multiple targets.

In the 6G era, space-air-Ground integrated networks (SAGIN) are anticipated to deliver global coverage, necessitating support for a diverse array of emerging applications in high-mobility, hostile environments. Under such conditions, conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation, widely employed in cellular and Wi-Fi communication systems, experiences performance degradation due to significant Doppler shifts. To overcome this obstacle, a novel two-dimensional (2D) modulation approach, namely orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS), has emerged as a key enabler for future high-mobility use cases. Distinctively, OTFS modulates information within the delay-Doppler (DD) domain, as opposed to the time-frequency (TF) domain utilized by OFDM. This offers advantages such as Doppler and delay resilience, reduced signaling latency, a lower peak-to-average ratio (PAPR), and a reduced-complexity implementation. Recent studies further indicate that the direct interplay between information and the physical world in the DD domain positions OTFS as a promising waveform for achieving integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). In this article, we present an in-depth review of OTFS technology in the context of the 6G era, encompassing fundamentals, recent advancements, and future directions. Our objective is to provide a valuable resource for researchers engaged in the field of OTFS.

Owing to the recent advancements of meta-materials and meta-surfaces, the concept of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been embraced to meet the spectral- and energy-efficient, and yet cost-effective solutions for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. From an operational standpoint, RISs can be easily deployed on the facades of buildings and indoor walls. Albeit promising, in the actual network operation, the deployment of RISs may face challenges because of the willingness and benefits of RIS holders from the aspect of installing RISs on their properties. Accordingly, RIS-aided wireless networks are faced with a formidable mission: how to balance the wireless service providers (WSPs) and RIS holders in terms of their respective interests. To alleviate this deadlock, we focus on the application of pricing models in RIS-aided wireless networks in pursuit of a win-win solution for both sides. Specifically, we commence with a comprehensive introduction of RIS pricing with its potential applications in RIS networks, meanwhile the fundamentals of pricing models are summarized in order to benefit both RIS holders and WSPs. In addition, a Stackelberg game-based model is exemplified to illustrate the operation of utility-maximization pricing. Finally, we highlight open issues and future research directions of applying pricing models to the RIS-aided wireless networks.

Semantic communication is not focused on improving the accuracy of transmitted symbols, but is concerned with expressing the expected meaning that the symbol sequence exactly carries. However, the measurement of semantic messages and their corresponding codebook generation are still open issues. Expansion, which integrates simple things into a complex system and even generates intelligence, is truly consistent with the evolution of the human language system. We apply this idea to the semantic communication system, quantifying semantic transmission by symbol sequences and investigating the semantic information system in a similar way as Shannon's method for digital communication systems. This work is the first to discuss semantic expansion and knowledge collision in the semantic information framework. Some important theoretical results are presented, including the relationship between semantic expansion and the transmission information rate. We believe such a semantic information framework may provide a new paradigm for semantic communications, and semantic expansion and knowledge collision will be the cornerstone of semantic information theory.

It is always a challenging task to service sudden events in non-convex and uncertain environments, and multi-agent coverage control provides a powerful theoretical framework to investigate the deployment problem of mobile robotic networks for minimizing the cost of handling random events. Inspired by the divide-and-conquer methodology, this paper proposes a novel coverage formulation to control multi-agent systems in the non-convex region while equalizing the workload among subregions. Thereby, a distributed coverage controller is designed to drive each agent towards the desired configurations that minimize the service cost by integrating with the rotational partition strategy. In addition, a circular search algorithm is proposed to identify optimal solutions to the problem of lowering service cost. Moreover, it is proved that this search algorithm enables to approximate the optimal configuration of multi-agent systems with the arbitrary small tolerance. Recently, the sparse vector code (SVC) is emerging as a promising solution for short-packet transmission in massive machine type communication (mMTC) as well as ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC). In the SVC process, the encoding and decoding stages are jointly modeled as a standard compressed sensing (CS) problem. Hence, this paper aims at improving the decoding performance of SVC by optimizing the spreading matrix (i.e. measurement matrix in CS). To this end, two greedy algorithms to minimize the mutual coherence value of the spreading matrix in SVC are proposed. Specially, for practical applications, the spreading matrices are further required to be bipolar whose entries are constrained as +1 or -1. As a result, the optimized spreading matrices are highly efficient for storage, computation, and hardware realization. Simulation results reveal that, compared with the existing work, the block error rate (BLER) performance of SVC can be improved significantly with the optimized spreading matrices.

For high mobility communication scenario, the recently emerged orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation introduces a new delay-Doppler domain signal space, and can provide better communication performance than traditional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system. This article focuses on the joint channel estimation and data detection (JCEDD) for hybrid reconfigurable intelligent surface (HRIS) aided millimeter wave (mmWave) OTFS systems. Firstly, a new transmission structure is designed. Within the pilot durations of the designed structure, partial HRIS elements are alternatively activated. The time domain channel model is then exhibited. Secondly, the received signal model for both the HRIS over time domain and the base station over delay-Doppler domain are studied. Thirdly, by utilizing channel parameters acquired at the HRIS, an HRIS beamforming design strategy is proposed. For the OTFS transmission, we propose a JCEDD scheme over delay-Doppler domain. In this scheme, message passing (MP) algorithm is designed to simultaneously obtain the equivalent channel gain and the data symbols. On the other hand, the channel parameters, i.e., the Doppler shift, the channel sparsity, and the channel variance, are updated through expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. By iteratively executing the MP and EM algorithm, both the channel and the unknown data symbols can be accurately acquired. Finally, simulation results are provided to validate the effectiveness of our proposed JCEDD scheme.

Each vehicle may change its MCW to achieve more access opportunities at the expense of others, which results in unfair communication performance. Moreover, the key access parameters MCW is the privacy information and each vehicle are not willing to share it with other vehicles. In this uncertain setting, age of information (AoI) is an important communication metric to measure the freshness of data, we design an intelligent vehicular node to learn the dynamic environment and predict the optimal MCW which can make it achieve age fairness. In order to allocate the optimal MCW for the vehicular node, we employ a learning algorithm to make a desirable decision by learning from replay history data. In particular, the algorithm is proposed by extending the traditional DQN training and testing method. Finally, by comparing with other methods, it is proved that the proposed DQN method can significantly improve the age fairness of the intelligent node.

In this work, we propose a new automatic speech recognition (ASR) system based on feature learning and an end-to-end training procedure for air traffic control (ATC) systems. The proposed model integrates the feature learning block, recurrent neural network (RNN), and connectionist temporal classification loss to build an end-to-end ASR model. Facing the complex environments of ATC speech, instead of the handcrafted features, a learning block is designed to extract informative features from raw waveforms for acoustic modeling. Both the SincNet and 1D convolution blocks are applied to process the raw waveforms, whose outputs are concatenated to the RNN layers for the temporal modeling. Thanks to the ability to learn representations from raw waveforms, the proposed model can be optimized in a complete end-to-end manner, i.e., from waveform to text. Finally, the multilingual issue in the ATC domain is also considered to achieve the ASR task by constructing a combined vocabulary of Chinese characters and English letters. The proposed approach is validated on a multilingual real-world corpus (ATCSpeech), and the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms other baselines, achieving a 6.9\% character error rate.

Vehicular edge computing (VEC) is envisioned as a promising approach to process the explosive computation tasks of vehicular user (VU). In the VEC system, each VU allocates power to process partial tasks through offloading and the remaining tasks through local execution. During the offloading, each VU adopts the multi-input multi-out and non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) channel to improve the channel spectrum efficiency and capacity. However, the channel condition is uncertain due to the channel interference among VUs caused by the MIMO-NOMA channel and the time-varying path-loss caused by the mobility of each VU. In addition, the task arrival of each VU is stochastic in the real world. The stochastic task arrival and uncertain channel condition affect greatly on the power consumption and latency of tasks for each VU. It is critical to design an optimal power allocation scheme considering the stochastic task arrival and channel variation to optimize the long-term reward including the power consumption and latency in the MIMO-NOMA VEC. Different from the traditional centralized deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based scheme, this paper constructs a decentralized DRL framework to formulate the power allocation optimization problem, where the local observations are selected as the state. The deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm is adopted to learn the optimal power allocation scheme based on the decentralized DRL framework. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed power allocation scheme outperforms the existing schemes.

Soft compression is a lossless image compression method, which is committed to eliminating coding redundancy and spatial redundancy at the same time by adopting locations and shapes of codebook to encode an image from the perspective of information theory and statistical distribution. In this paper, we propose a new concept, compressible indicator function with regard to image, which gives a threshold about the average number of bits required to represent a location and can be used for revealing the performance of soft compression. We investigate and analyze soft compression for binary image, gray image and multi-component image by using specific algorithms and compressible indicator value. It is expected that the bandwidth and storage space needed when transmitting and storing the same kind of images can be greatly reduced by applying soft compression.

Employing massively distributed antennas brings radio access points (RAPs) closer to users, thus enables aggressive spectrum reuse that can bridge gaps between the scarce spectrum resource and extremely high connection densities in future wireless systems. Examples include cloud radio access network (C-RAN), ultra-dense network (UDN), and cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. These systems are usually designed in the form of fiber-wireless communications (FWC), where distributed antennas or RAPs are connected to a central unit (CU) through optical front-hauls. A large number of densely deployed antennas or RAPs requires an extensive infrastructure of optical front-hauls. Consequently, the cost, complexity, and power consumption of the network of optical front-hauls may dominate the performance of the entire system. This article provides an overview and outlook on the architecture, modeling, design, and performance of massively distributed antenna systems with non-ideal optical front-hauls. Complex interactions between optical front-hauls and wireless access links require optimum designs across the optical and wireless domains by jointly exploiting their unique characteristics. It is demonstrated that systems with analog radio-frequency-over-fiber (RFoF) links outperform their baseband-over-fiber (BBoF) or intermediate-frequency-over-fiber (IFoF) counterparts for systems with shorter fiber length and more RAPs, which are all desired properties for future wireless communication systems.

This letter develops an optimum beamforming method for downlink transmissions in cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, which employ a massive number of distributed access points to provide concurrent services to multiple users. The optimum design is formulated as a max-min problem that maximizes the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio of all users. It is shown analytically that the problem is quasi-concave, and the optimum solution is obtained with the second-order cone programming. The proposed method identifies the best achievable beamforming performance in cell-free massive MIMO systems. The results can be used as benchmarks for the design of practical low complexity beamformers.

This paper focuses on a new path division multiple access (PDMA) for both uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) massive multiple-input multiple-output network over a high mobility scenario, where the orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is adopted. First, the 3D UL channel model and the received signal model in the angle-delay-Doppler domain are studied. Secondly, the 3D-Newtonized orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm is utilized for the extraction of the UL channel parameters, including channel gains, directions of arrival, delays, and Doppler frequencies, over the antenna-time-frequency domain. Thirdly, we carefully analyze energy dispersion and power leakage of the 3D angle-delay-Doppler channels. Then, along UL, we design a path scheduling algorithm to properly assign angle-domain resources at user sides and to assure that the observation regions for different users do not overlap over the 3D cubic area, i.e., angle-delay-Doppler domain. After scheduling, different users can map their respective data to the scheduled delay-Doppler domain grids, and simultaneously send the data to base station (BS) without inter-user interference in the same OTFS block. Correspondingly, the signals at desired grids within the 3D resource space of BS are separately collected to implement the 3D channel estimation and maximal ratio combining-based data detection over the angle-delay-Doppler domain. Then, we construct a low complexity beamforming scheme over the angle-delay-Domain domain to achieve inter-user interference free DL communication. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the validity of our proposed unified UL/DL PDMA scheme.

We consider an Internet of Things (IoT) system in which a sensor observes a phenomena of interest with exponentially distributed intervals and delivers the updates to a monitor with the First-come-First-served (FCFS) policy. At the monitor, the received updates are used to make decisions with deterministic or random intervals. For this system, we investigate the freshness of the updates at these decision epochs using the age upon decisions (AuD) metric. Theoretical results show that 1) when the decisions are made with exponentially distributed intervals, the average AuD of the system is smaller if the service time (e.g., transmission time) is uniformly distributed than when it is exponentially distributed, and would be the smallest if it is deterministic; 2)when the decisions are made periodically, the average AuD of the system is larger than, and decreases with decision rate to, the average AuD of the corresponding system with Poisson decision intervals; 3)the probability of missing to use a received update for any decisions is decreasing with the decision rate, and is the smallest if the service time is deterministic. For IoT monitoring systems, therefore, it is suggested to use deterministic monitoring schemes, deterministic transmitting schemes, and Poisson decision schemes, so that the received updates are as fresh as possible at the time they are used to make decisions.

Space-division multiplexing is a promising technology in optical fibre communication to improve the transmission capacity of a single optical fibre. However, the number of channels that can be multiplexed is limited by the crosstalks between channels, and the multiplexing is only applied to few-mode or multi-core fibres. Here, we propose a high-spatial-density channel multiplexing framework employing deep learning for standard multimode fibres (MMF). We present a proof-of-concept experimental system, consisting of a single light source, a single digital-micromirror-device modulator, a single detection camera, and a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to demonstrate up to 400-channel simultaneous data transmission with accuracy close to 100% over MMFs of different types, diameters and lengths. A novel scalable semi-supervised learning model is proposed to adapt the CNN to the time-varying MMF information channels in real-time, to overcome the environmental changes such as temperature variations and vibrations, and to reconstruct the input data from complex crosstalks among hundreds of channels. This deep-learning based approach is promising to maximize the use of the spatial dimension of MMFs, and to break the present number-of-channel limit in space-division multiplexing for future high-capacity MMF transmission data links.

Heavy data load and wide cover range have always been crucial problems for online data processing in internet of things (IoT). Recently, mobile-edge computing (MEC) and unmanned aerial vehicle base stations (UAV-BSs) have emerged as promising techniques in IoT. In this paper, we propose a three-layer online data processing network based on MEC technique. On the bottom layer, raw data are generated by widely distributed sensors, which reflects local information. Upon them, unmanned aerial vehicle base stations (UAV-BSs) are deployed as moving MEC servers, which collect data and conduct initial steps of data processing. On top of them, a center cloud receives processed results and conducts further evaluation. As this is an online data processing system, the edge nodes should stabilize delay to ensure data freshness. Furthermore, limited onboard energy poses constraints to edge processing capability. To smartly manage network resources for saving energy and stabilizing delay, we develop an online determination policy based on Lyapunov Optimization. In cases of low data rate, it tends to reduce edge processor frequency for saving energy. In the presence of high data rate, it will smartly allocate bandwidth for edge data offloading. Meanwhile, hovering UAV-BSs bring a large and flexible service coverage, which results in the problem of effective path planning. In this paper, we apply deep reinforcement learning and develop an online path planning algorithm. Taking observations of around environment as input, a CNN network is trained to predict the reward of each action. By simulations, we validate its effectiveness in enhancing service coverage. The result will contribute to big data processing in future IoT.

Heavy data load and wide cover range have always been crucial problems for internet of things (IoT). However, in mobile-edge computing (MEC) network, the huge data can be partly processed at the edge. In this paper, a MEC-based big data analysis network is discussed. The raw data generated by distributed network terminals are collected and processed by edge servers. The edge servers split out a large sum of redundant data and transmit extracted information to the center cloud for further analysis. However, for consideration of limited edge computation ability, part of the raw data in huge data sources may be directly transmitted to the cloud. To manage limited resources online, we propose an algorithm based on Lyapunov optimization to jointly optimize the policy of edge processor frequency, transmission power and bandwidth allocation. The algorithm aims at stabilizing data processing delay and saving energy without knowing probability distributions of data sources. The proposed network management algorithm may contribute to big data processing in future IoT.

This paper focuses on the problem of finding a particular data recommendation strategy based on the user preferences and a system expected revenue. To this end, we formulate this problem as an optimization by designing the recommendation mechanism as close to the user behavior as possible with a certain revenue constraint. In fact, the optimal recommendation distribution is the one that is the closest to the utility distribution in the sense of relative entropy and satisfies expected revenue. We show that the optimal recommendation distribution follows the same form as the message importance measure (MIM) if the target revenue is reasonable, i.e., neither too small nor too large. Therefore, the optimal recommendation distribution can be regarded as the normalized MIM, where the parameter, called importance coefficient, presents the concern of the system and switches the attention of the system over data sets with different occurring probability. By adjusting the importance coefficient, our MIM based framework of data recommendation can then be applied to system with various system requirements and data distributions. Therefore, the obtained results illustrate the physical meaning of MIM from the data recommendation perspective and validate the rationality of MIM in one aspect.

The minor probability events detection is a crucial problem in Big data. Such events tend to include rarely occurring phenomenons which should be detected and monitored carefully. Given the prior probabilities of separate events and the conditional distributions of observations on the events, the Bayesian detection can be applied to estimate events behind the observations. It has been proved that Bayesian detection has the smallest overall testing error in average sense. However, when detecting an event with very small prior probability, the conditional Bayesian detection would result in high miss testing rate. To overcome such a problem, a modified detection approach is proposed based on Bayesian detection and message importance measure, which can reduce miss testing rate in conditions of detecting events with minor probability. The result can help to dig minor probability events in big data.
