A novel modular extremely large-scale multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) framework is proposed in this paper. We consider a downlink ISAC scenario and exploit the modular array architecture to enhance the communication spectral efficiency and sensing resolution while reducing the channel modeling complexity by employing the hybrid spherical and planar wavefront model. Considering the hybrid digital-analog structure inherent to modular arrays, we formulate a joint analog-digital beamforming design problem based on the communication spectral efficiency and sensing signal-to-clutter-plus-noise ratio (SCNR). By exploring the structural similarity of the communication and sensing channels, it is proved that the optimal transmit covariance matrix lies in the subspace spanned by the subarray response vectors, yielding a closed-form solution for the optimal analog beamformer. Consequently, the joint design problem is transformed into a low-dimensional rank-constrained digital beamformer optimization. We first propose a manifold optimization method that directly optimizes the digital beamformer on the rank-constrained Stiefel manifold. Additionally, we develop an semidefinite relaxation (SDR)-based approach that relaxes the rank constraint and employ the randomization technique to obtain a near-optimal solution. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed modular XL-MIMO ISAC framework and algorithms.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is an enabling technology for the sixth-generation mobile communications, which equips the wireless communication networks with sensing capabilities. In this paper, we investigate transmit beamforming design for multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO)-ISAC systems in scenarios with multiple radar targets and communication users. A general form of multi-target sensing mutual information (MI) is derived, along with its upper bound, which can be interpreted as the sum of individual single-target sensing MI. Additionally, this upper bound can be achieved by suppressing the cross-correlation among reflected signals from different targets, which aligns with the principles of adaptive MIMO radar. Then, we propose a multi-objective optimization framework based on the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio of each user and the tight upper bound of sensing MI, introducing the Pareto boundary to characterize the achievable communication-sensing performance boundary of the proposed ISAC system. To achieve the Pareto boundary, the max-min system utility function method is employed, while considering the fairness between communication users and radar targets. Subsequently, the bisection search method is employed to find a specific Pareto optimal solution by solving a series of convex feasible problems. Finally, simulation results validate that the proposed method achieves a better tradeoff between multi-user communication and multi-target sensing performance. Additionally, utilizing the tight upper bound of sensing MI as a performance metric can enhance the multi-target resolution capability and angle estimation accuracy.

The bistatic near-field sensing system is considered, where the target is located in the near-field of the whole modular array and the far-field of each subarray. Then, the closed-form expressions of Cramer-Rao bounds (CRBs) for range and angle estimations are derived based on the hybrid spherical and planar wave model (HSPM). Simulation results validate the accuracy of the derived closed-form CRBs and demonstrate that: i) The HSPM with varying angles of arrival (AoAs) between subarrays can reduce the CRB for range estimation compared to the traditional HSPM with shared AoA; and ii) The proposed generic modular architecture with subarrays positioned closer to the edges can significantly reduce the CRBs compared to the traditional modular architecture with uniform subarray layout, when the array aperture is fixed.

Segment Anything Model (SAM), a vision foundation model trained on large-scale annotations, has recently continued raising awareness within medical image segmentation. Despite the impressive capabilities of SAM on natural scenes, it struggles with performance decline when confronted with medical images, especially those involving blurry boundaries and highly irregular regions of low contrast. In this paper, a SAM-based parameter-efficient fine-tuning method, called SAMIHS, is proposed for intracranial hemorrhage segmentation, which is a crucial and challenging step in stroke diagnosis and surgical planning. Distinguished from previous SAM and SAM-based methods, SAMIHS incorporates parameter-refactoring adapters into SAM's image encoder and considers the efficient and flexible utilization of adapters' parameters. Additionally, we employ a combo loss that combines binary cross-entropy loss and boundary-sensitive loss to enhance SAMIHS's ability to recognize the boundary regions. Our experimental results on two public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. Code is available at https://github.com/mileswyn/SAMIHS .

Existing digital sensors capture images at fixed spatial and spectral resolutions (e.g., RGB, multispectral, and hyperspectral images), and each combination requires bespoke machine learning models. Neural Implicit Functions partially overcome the spatial resolution challenge by representing an image in a resolution-independent way. However, they still operate at fixed, pre-defined spectral resolutions. To address this challenge, we propose Spatial-Spectral Implicit Function (SSIF), a neural implicit model that represents an image as a function of both continuous pixel coordinates in the spatial domain and continuous wavelengths in the spectral domain. We empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of SSIF on two challenging spatio-spectral super-resolution benchmarks. We observe that SSIF consistently outperforms state-of-the-art baselines even when the baselines are allowed to train separate models at each spectral resolution. We show that SSIF generalizes well to both unseen spatial resolutions and spectral resolutions. Moreover, SSIF can generate high-resolution images that improve the performance of downstream tasks (e.g., land use classification) by 1.7%-7%.

With recent rapid growth of large language models (LLMs), discrete speech tokenization has played an important role for injecting speech into LLMs. However, this discretization gives rise to a loss of information, consequently impairing overall performance. To improve the performance of these discrete speech tokens, we present RepCodec, a novel speech representation codec for semantic speech tokenization. In contrast to audio codecs which reconstruct the raw audio, RepCodec learns a vector quantization codebook through reconstructing speech representations from speech encoders like HuBERT or data2vec. Together, the speech encoder, the codec encoder and the vector quantization codebook form a pipeline for converting speech waveforms into semantic tokens. The extensive experiments illustrate that RepCodec, by virtue of its enhanced information retention capacity, significantly outperforms the widely used k-means clustering approach in both speech understanding and generation. Furthermore, this superiority extends across various speech encoders and languages, affirming the robustness of RepCodec. We believe our method can facilitate large language modeling research on speech processing.

Centrifuges serve as essential instruments in modern experimental sciences, facilitating a wide range of routine sample processing tasks that necessitate material sedimentation. However, the study for real time observation of the dynamical process during centrifugation has remained elusive. In this study, we developed an innovative Lab_in_a_Tube imaging spectrophotometer that incorporates capabilities of real time image analysis and programmable interruption. This portable LIAT device costs less than 30 US dollars. Based on our knowledge, it is the first Wi Fi camera built_in in common lab centrifuges with active closed_loop control. We tested our LIAT imaging spectrophotometer with solute solvent interaction investigation obtained from lab centrifuges with quantitative data plotting in a real time manner. Single re circulating flow was real time observed, forming the ring shaped pattern during centrifugation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the very first observation of similar phenomena. We developed theoretical simulations for the single particle in a rotating reference frame, which correlated well with experimental results. We also demonstrated the first demonstration to visualize the blood sedimentation process in clinical lab centrifuges. This remarkable cost effectiveness opens up exciting opportunities for centrifugation microbiology research and paves the way for the creation of a network of computational imaging spectrometers at an affordable price for large scale and continuous monitoring of centrifugal processes in general.

The advancement of audio-language (AL) multimodal learning tasks has been significant in recent years. However, researchers face challenges due to the costly and time-consuming collection process of existing audio-language datasets, which are limited in size. To address this data scarcity issue, we introduce WavCaps, the first large-scale weakly-labelled audio captioning dataset, comprising approximately 400k audio clips with paired captions. We sourced audio clips and their raw descriptions from web sources and a sound event detection dataset. However, the online-harvested raw descriptions are highly noisy and unsuitable for direct use in tasks such as automated audio captioning. To overcome this issue, we propose a three-stage processing pipeline for filtering noisy data and generating high-quality captions, where ChatGPT, a large language model, is leveraged to filter and transform raw descriptions automatically. We conduct a comprehensive analysis of the characteristics of WavCaps dataset and evaluate it on multiple downstream audio-language multimodal learning tasks. The systems trained on WavCaps outperform previous state-of-the-art (SOTA) models by a significant margin. Our aspiration is for the WavCaps dataset we have proposed to facilitate research in audio-language multimodal learning and demonstrate the potential of utilizing ChatGPT to enhance academic research. High-speed communication and accurate sensing are of vital importance for future transportation system. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system has the advantages of high spectrum efficiency and low hardware cost, satisfying the requirements of sensing and communication. Therefore, ISAC is considered to be a promising technology in the future transportation system. However, due to the low transmit power of signal and the influence of harsh transmission environment on radar sensing, the signal to noise ratio (SNR) at the radar receiver is low, which affects the sensing performance. This paper introduces the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) into ISAC system. With IRS composed of M sub-surfaces implemented on the surface of the target. The SNR at the radar receiver is 20lg(M) times larger than the scheme without IRS. Correspondingly, radar detection probability is significantly improved, and Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) for ranging and velocity estimation is reduced. This paper proves the efficiency of IRS enabled ISAC system, which motivates the implementation of IRS to enhance the sensing capability in ISAC system.

Speech is the surface form of a finite set of phonetic units, which can be represented by discrete codes. We propose the Code BERT (CoBERT) approach for self-supervised speech representation learning. The idea is to convert an utterance to a sequence of discrete codes, and perform code representation learning, where we predict the code representations based on a masked view of the original speech input. Unlike the prior self-distillation approaches of which the teacher and the student are of the same modality, our target model predicts representations from a different modality. CoBERT outperforms the most recent state-of-the-art performance on the ASR task and brings significant improvements on the SUPERB speech translation (ST) task. Land surface temperature (LST) is a key parameter when monitoring land surface processes. However, cloud contamination and the tradeoff between the spatial and temporal resolutions greatly impede the access to high-quality thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing data. Despite the massive efforts made to solve these dilemmas, it is still difficult to generate LST estimates with concurrent spatial completeness and a high spatio-temporal resolution. Land surface models (LSMs) can be used to simulate gapless LST with a high temporal resolution, but this usually comes with a low spatial resolution. In this paper, we present an integrated temperature fusion framework for satellite-observed and LSM-simulated LST data to map gapless LST at a 60-m spatial resolution and half-hourly temporal resolution. The global linear model (GloLM) model and the diurnal land surface temperature cycle (DTC) model are respectively performed as preprocessing steps for sensor and temporal normalization between the different LST data. The Landsat LST, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LST, and Community Land Model Version 5.0 (CLM 5.0)-simulated LST are then fused using a filter-based spatio-temporal integrated fusion model. Evaluations were implemented in an urban-dominated region (the city of Wuhan in China) and a natural-dominated region (the Heihe River Basin in China), in terms of accuracy, spatial variability, and diurnal temporal dynamics. Results indicate that the fused LST is highly consistent with actual Landsat LST data (in situ LST measurements), in terms of a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.94 (0.97-0.99), a mean absolute error of 0.71-0.98 K (0.82-3.17 K), and a root-mean-square error of 0.97-1.26 K (1.09-3.97 K).

A hybrid simulation-based framework involving system dynamics and agent-based simulation is proposed to address duopoly game considering multiple strategic decision variables and rich payoff, which cannot be addressed by traditional approaches involving closed-form equations. While system dynamics models are used to represent integrated production, logistics, and pricing determination activities of duopoly companies, agent-based simulation is used to mimic enhanced consumer purchasing behavior considering advertisement, promotion effect, and acquaintance recommendation in the consumer social network. The payoff function of the duopoly companies is assumed to be the net profit based on the total revenue and various cost items such as raw material, production, transportation, inventory and backorder. A unique procedure is proposed to solve and analyze the proposed simulation-based game, where the procedural components include strategy refinement, data sampling, gaming solving, and performance evaluation. First, design of experiment and estimated conformational value of information techniques are employed for strategy refinement and data sampling, respectively. Game solving then focuses on pure strategy equilibriums, and performance evaluation addresses game stability, equilibrium strictness, and robustness. A hypothetical case scenario involving soft-drink duopoly on Coke and Pepsi is considered to illustrate and demonstrate the proposed approach. Final results include P-values of statistical tests, confidence intervals, and simulation steady state analysis for different pure equilibriums.

The proposed method diffusion probabilistic LMS (DPLMS) is more robust to input signal and impulsive interference than the DSE-LMS, DRVSSLMS and DLLAD algorithms. Instead of minimizing the estimate error, the DPLMS algorithm is derived from approximating the posterior distribution with an isotropic Gaussian distribution. The stability of mean performance and computational complexity are analyzed theoretically. Results from the simulation indicate that the DPLMS algorithm is more robust to input signal and impulsive interference than the DSE-LMS, DRVSSLMS and DLLAD algorithms. These results suggest that the DPLMS algorithm can perform better in identifying the unknown coefficients under the complex and changeable impulsive interference environments.

There is a need to improve the capability of the adaptive filtering algorithm against Gaussian or multiple types of non-Gaussian noises, time-varying system, and systems with low SNR. In this paper, we propose an optimized least mean absolute fourth (OPLMF) algorithm, especially for a time-varying unknown system with low signal-noise-rate (SNR). The optimal step-size of OPLMF is obtained by minimizing the mean-square deviation (MSD) at any given moment in time. In addition, the mean convergence and steady-state error of OPLMF are derived. Also the theoretical computational complexity of OPLMF is analyzed. Furthermore, the simulation experiment results of system identification are used to illustrate the principle and efficiency of the OPLMF algorithm. The performance of the algorithm is analyzed mathematically and validated experimentally. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed OPLMF is superior to the normalized LMF (NLMF) and variable step-size of LMF using quotient form (VSSLMFQ) algorithms.
