The Vertex Locator (VELO) is a silicon microstrip detector that surrounds the proton-proton interaction region in the LHCb experiment. The performance of the detector during the first years of its physics operation is reviewed. The system is operated in vacuum, uses a bi-phase CO2 cooling system, and the sensors are moved to 7 mm from the LHC beam for physics data taking. The performance and stability of these characteristic features of the detector are described, and details of the material budget are given. The calibration of the timing and the data processing algorithms that are implemented in FPGAs are described. The system performance is fully characterised. The sensors have a signal to noise ratio of approximately 20 and a best hit resolution of 4 microns is achieved at the optimal track angle. The typical detector occupancy for minimum bias events in standard operating conditions in 2011 is around 0.5%, and the detector has less than 1% of faulty strips. The proximity of the detector to the beam means that the inner regions of the n+-on-n sensors have undergone space-charge sign inversion due to radiation damage. The VELO performance parameters that drive the experiment's physics sensitivity are also given. The track finding efficiency of the VELO is typically above 98% and the modules have been aligned to a precision of 1 micron for translations in the plane transverse to the beam. A primary vertex resolution of 13 microns in the transverse plane and 71 microns along the beam axis is achieved for vertices with 25 tracks. An impact parameter resolution of less than 35 microns is achieved for particles with transverse momentum greater than 1 GeV/c.

An amplitude analysis of the final state structure in the Bs->J/ψK+K- decay mode is performed using 1.0/fb of data collected by the LHCb experiment in 7 TeV center-of-mass energy pp collisions produced by the LHC. A modified Dalitz plot analysis of the final state is performed using both the invariant mass spectra and the decay angular distributions. Resonant structures are observed in the K+K- mass spectrum as well as a significant non-resonant S-wave contribution. The largest resonant component is the φ(1020), accompanied by f0(980), f'2(1525), and four additional resonances. The overall branching fraction is measured to be B(Bs->J/ψK+K-)=(7.70 +/-0.08 +/- 0.39 +/- 0.60)x 10^(-4), where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to the ratio of the number of Bs to B- mesons produced. The mass and width of the f'2(1525) are measured to be 1522.2 +/- 2.8^{+5.3}_{-2.0} MeV and 84 +/- 6^{+10}_{-5} MeV, respectively. The final state fractions of the other resonant states are also reported.

The relative production rate of $B^{0}_{s}$ and $B^{0}$ mesons is determined with the hadronic decays $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{-}_{s}π^{+}$ and $B^0 \rightarrow D^{-}K^{+}$. The measurement uses data corresponding to 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV recorded in the forward region with the LHCb experiment. The ratio of production rates, $f_{s}/f_{d}$, is measured to be $0.238 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.021 $, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third theoretical. This is combined with a previous LHCb measurement to obtain $f_{s}/f_{d} = 0.256 \pm 0.020$. The dependence of $f_{s}/f_{d}$ on the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the $B$ meson is determined using the decays $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{-}_{s}π^{+}$ and $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}π^{+}$. There is evidence for a decrease with increasing transverse momentum, whereas the ratio remains constant as a function of pseudorapidity. In addition, the ratio of branching fractions of the decays $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}K^{+}$ and $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}π^{+}$ is measured to be $0.0822 \pm 0.0011 (\textrm{stat}) \pm 0.0025 (\textrm{syst})$.

The data samples comprise 1.1 fb^-1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 8 TeV and 1.0 fb^-1 at sqrt{s}=7 TeV. We observe an excess of Bs -> mu+ mu- candidates with respect to the background expectation. The probability that the background could produce such an excess or larger is 5.3 x 10^-4 corresponding to a signal significance of 3.5 standard deviations. A maximum-likelihood fit gives a branching fraction of BR(Bs -> mu+ mu-) = (3.2^{+1.5}_{-1.2}) x 10^-9, where the statistical uncertainty is 95% of the total uncertainty. This result is in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. The observed number of B0 -> mu+ mu- candidates is consistent with the background expectation, giving an upper limit of BR(B0 -> mu+ mu-) < 9.4 x 10^-10 at 95% confidence level.

Candidates for $Z \to ττ$ decays are identified through reconstructed final states with two muons, a muon and an electron, a muon and a hadron, or an electron and a hadron. The production cross-section for $Z$ bosons, with invariant mass between 60 and 120 GeV/$c^2$, which decay to $τ$ leptons with transverse momenta greater than 20 GeV/$c$ and pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5, is measured to be $σ_{pp \to Z \to ττ} = 71.4 \pm 3.5 \pm 2.8 \pm 2.5$ pb; the first uncertainty is statistical, the second uncertainty is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The ratio of the cross-sections for $Z \to ττ$ to $Z \to μμ$ is determined to be $0.93 \pm 0.09$, where the uncertainty is the combination of statistical, systematic, and luminosity uncertainties of the two measurements.

When integrated over the kinematic range 2.0 < p_T < 18.0 GeV/c and 2.20 < η< 4.75, the production asymmetry is A_P = (-0.96+/-0.26+/-0.18)%. The uncertainties quoted are statistical and systematic, respectively. The result assumes that any direct CP violation in the D+ -> K_S pi+ decay is negligible. No significant dependence on ηor p_T is observed.

The analysis exploits 1.0 $\rm fb^{-1}$ of data collected by the LHCb experiment. The study makes no model-based assumption on the variation of the strong phase of the D decay amplitude over the Dalitz plot, but uses measurements of this quantity from CLEO-c as input. The values of the parameters are found to be $x_- = (0.0 \pm 4.3 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-2}$, $y_- = (2.7 \pm 5.2 \pm 0.8 \pm 2.3) \times 10^{-2}$, $x_+ = (-10.3 \pm 4.5 \pm 1.8 \pm 1.4)\times 10^{-2}$ and $y_+ = (-0.9 \pm 3.7 \pm 0.8 \pm 3.0)\times 10^{-2}$. The first, second, and third uncertainties are the statistical, the experimental systematic, and the error associated with the precision of the strong-phase parameters measured at CLEO-c, respectively. These results correspond to $γ= (44^{\,+43}_{\,-38})^\circ$, with a second solution at $γ\to γ+ 180^\circ$, and $r_B = 0.07 \pm 0.04$, where $r_B$ is the ratio between the suppressed and favoured B decay amplitudes.

The angular distribution and differential branching fraction of the decay $B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ are studied with a dataset corresponding to $1.0\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, collected by the LHCb experiment. The angular distribution is measured in bins of dimuon invariant mass squared and found to be consistent with Standard Model expectations. Integrating the differential branching fraction over the full dimuon invariant mass range yields a total branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}μ^{+}μ^{-}) = (4.36 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.18)\times 10^{-7}$. The ratio of branching fractions of the radiative B decays B0 -> K*0 gamma and Bs0 phi gamma has been measured using an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb-1 of pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=7 TeV. The value obtained is BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma)/BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) = 1.23 +/- 0.06(stat.) +/- 0.04(syst.) +/- 0.10(fs/fd), where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third is associated with the ratio of fragmentation fractions fs/fd. Using the world average value for BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma), the branching fraction BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) is measured to be (3.5 +/- 0.4) x 10^{-5}.
The direct CP asymmetry in B0 -> K*0 gamma decays has also been measured with the same data and found to be A(CP)(B0 -> K*0 gamma) = (0.8 +/- 1.7(stat.) +/- 0.9(syst.))%.
Both measurements are the most precise to date and are in agreement with the previous experimental results and theoretical expectations.

During 2011 the LHCb experiment at CERN collected 1.0 fb-1 of sqrt{s} = 7 TeV pp collisions. Due to the large heavy quark production cross-sections, these data provide unprecedented samples of heavy flavoured hadrons. The first results from LHCb have made a significant impact on the flavour physics landscape and have definitively proved the concept of a dedicated experiment in the forward region at a hadron collider. This document discusses the implications of these first measurements on classes of extensions to the Standard Model, bearing in mind the interplay with the results of searches for on-shell production of new particles at ATLAS and CMS. The physics potential of an upgrade to the LHCb detector, which would allow an order of magnitude more data to be collected, is emphasised.

A precise determination of the effective $B_s^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^-$ lifetime can be used to constrain contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model in the $B_s^0$ meson system. Conventional approaches select $B$ meson decay products that are significantly displaced from the $B$ meson production vertex. As a consequence, $B$ mesons with low decay times are suppressed, introducing a bias to the decay time spectrum which must be corrected. This analysis uses a technique that explicitly avoids a lifetime bias by using a neural network based trigger and event selection. Using 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded by the LHCb experiment, the effective $B_s^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^-$ lifetime is measured as $1.455 \pm 0.046 \; \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.006 \; \mathrm{(syst.)} \, \mathrm{ps}.$

The production ratios are compared to the predictions of several Monte Carlo generator settings, none of which are able to describe adequately all observables. The ratio $\bar{p}/p$ is also considered as a function of rapidity loss, $Δy \equiv y_{\rm beam} - y$, and is used to constrain models of baryon transport.

The $B \to Kμ^+μ^-$ isospin asymmetry integrated over $q^2$ is negative, deviating from zero with over 4 $σ$ significance. The $B \to K^{*}μ^+μ^-$ decay measurements are consistent with the Standard Model prediction of negligible isospin asymmetry. The observation of the decay $B^0 \to K^0_{\rm\scriptscriptstyle S}μ^+μ^-$ is reported with 5.7 $σ$ significance. Assuming that the branching fraction of $B^0 \to K^0μ^+μ^-$ is twice that of $B^0 \to K^0_{\rm\scriptscriptstyle S}μ^+μ^-$, the branching fractions of $B^0 \to K^0μ^+μ^-$ and $B \to K^{*+}μ^+μ^-$ are found to be ($0.31^{+0.07}_{-0.06}) \times 10^{-6}$ and ($1.16\pm0.19) \times 10^{-6}$, respectively.

Heavy quark production in 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy pp collisions at the LHC is not necessarily flavour symmetric. The production asymmetry, A_P, between Ds+ and Ds- mesons is studied using the φπ(+/-) decay mode in a data sample of 1.0/fb collected with the LHCb detector. The difference between π+ and π- detection efficiencies is determined using the ratios of fully reconstructed to partially reconstructed D*(+/-) decays. The overall production asymmetry in the Ds rapidity region 2.0 to 4.5 with transverse momentum larger than 2 GeV is measured to be A_P=(-0.33 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.10)%. This result can constrain models of heavy flavour production.

The decay Bs->J/ψπ+π- can be exploited to study CP violation. A detailed understanding of its structure is imperative in order to optimize its usefulness. An analysis of this three-body final state is performed using a 1.0/fb sample of data produced in 7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC and collected by the LHCb experiment. A modified Dalitz plot analysis of the final state is performed using both the invariant mass spectra and the decay angular distributions. The π+π- system is shown to be dominantly in an S-wave state, and the CP-odd fraction in this Bs decay is shown to be greater than 0.977 at 95% confidence level. In addition, we report the first measurement of the J/ψπ+π- branching fraction relative to J/ψφ of (19.79 +/- 0.47 +/- 0.52)%.

Measurements of inclusive $W$ and $Z$ boson production cross-sections in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV using final states containing muons are presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb$^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. The $W$ and $Z$ bosons are reconstructed from muons with a transverse momentum above 20 GeV$/c$ and pseudorapidity between 2.0 and 4.5, and, in the case of the $Z$ cross-section, a dimuon invariant mass between 60 and 120 GeV$/c^2$. The cross-sections are measured to be {$831\pm9\pm27\pm 29$ pb} for $W^+$, {$656\pm8\pm19\pm 23$ pb} for $W^-$ and {$76.7\pm1.7\pm3.3\pm2.7$ pb} for $Z$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the luminosity. Differential cross-sections, $W$ and $Z$ cross-section ratios and the lepton charge asymmetry are also measured in the same kinematic region. The ratios are determined to be $σ_{W^+\rightarrowμ^+ν} / σ_{W^-\rightarrowμ^-\barν}= ${$1.27\pm0.02\pm0.01$}, and $σ_{W^+\rightarrowμ^+ν} + σ_{W^-\rightarrowμ^-\barν})/σ_{Z\rightarrowμμ}= ${$19.4\pm0.5\pm0.9$}. The results are in general agreement with theoretical predictions, performed at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD using recently calculated parton distribution functions.

The ratio of the prompt production cross-sections for $χ_{c}$ and $J/ψ$, $σ(χ_{c}\rightarrow J/ψγ)/ σ(J/ψ)$, is determined as a function of the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum in the range $2 < p_{\mathrm T}^{J/ψ} < 15$ GeV/$c$. The results are in excellent agreement with next-to-leading order non-relativistic expectations and show a significant discrepancy compared with the colour singlet model prediction at leading order, especially in the low $p_{\mathrm T}^{J/ψ}$ region.

The differential cross-section for the inclusive production of psi(2S) mesons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV has been measured with the LHCb detector. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1. The psi(2S) mesons are reconstructed in the decay channels psi(2S) -> mu+ mu- and psi(2S) -> J/psi pi+ pi-, with the J/psi meson decaying into two muons. Results are presented both for promptly produced psi(2S) mesons and for those originating from b-hadron decays. In the kinematic range pT(psi(2S)) <= 16 GeV/c and 2 < y(psi(2S)) <= 4.5 we measure 1.44 +- 0.01 +- 0.12+0.2-0.4 mub for prompt psi(2S) production and 0.25 +- 0.01 +- 0.02 mub for psi(2S) from b-hadron decays, where the last uncertainty on the prompt cross-section is due to the unknown psi(2S) polarization. Recent QCD calculations are found to be in good agreement with our measurements. Combining the present result with the LHCb J/psi measurements we determine the inclusive branching fraction B(b -> psi(2S) X) = (2.73 +- 0.06 +- 0.16 +- 0.24) x 10^(-3), where the last uncertainty is due to the B(b -> J/psi X), B(J/psi -> mu+ mu-) and B(psi(2S) -> e+ e-) branching fraction uncertainties. All above results are corrected by an erratum included as an appendix.

The decay mode $\B^{0}_{s} \to D^{\mp}_{s} K^{\pm} $ allows for one of the theoretically cleanest measurements of the CKM angle $γ$ through the study of time-dependent $\ensuremath{CP}\xspace$ violation. This paper reports a measurement of its branching fraction relative to the Cabibbo-favoured mode $\B^{0}_{s} \to D^{-}_{s} π^{+}$ based on a data sample of 0.37 fb$^{-1}$ proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV collected in 2011 with the LHCb detector. In addition, the ratio of $\ensuremath{\mathrm{B}}\xspace$ meson production fractions $\ensuremath{f_s/f_d}$, determined from semileptonic decays, together with the known branching fraction of the control channel $B^{0} \to D^{-} π^{+}$, is used to perform an absolute measurement of the branching fractions:
$B (\B^0_s \to D^-_s π^+) \;= (2.95 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.17^{\,+\,0.18}_{\,-\,0.22}) \times 10^{-3}$,
$B (\B^0_s \to D^\mp_s K^\pm) = (1.90 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.13^{\,+\,0.12}_{\,-\,0.14}) \times 10^{-4}\,$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second the experimental systematic uncertainty, and the third the uncertainty due to $f_s/f_d$.

The production of Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) mesons in proton-proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. The analysis is based on a data sample of 25 pb-1 collected at the Large Hadron Collider. The Upsilon mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode Upsilon -> mu+ mu- and the signal yields are extracted from a fit to the mu+ mu- invariant mass distributions. The differential production cross-sections times dimuon branching fractions are measured as a function of the Upsilon transverse momentum pT and rapidity y, over the range pT < 15 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5. The cross-sections times branching fractions, integrated over these kinematic ranges, are measured to be sigma(pp -> Upsilon(1S) X) x B(Upsilon(1S)->mu+ mu-) = 2.29 {\pm} 0.01 {\pm} 0.10 -0.37 +0.19 nb, sigma(pp -> Upsilon(2S) X) x B(Upsilon(2S)->mu+ mu-) = 0.562 {\pm} 0.007 {\pm} 0.023 -0.092 +0.048 nb, sigma(pp -> Upsilon(3S) X) x B(Upsilon(3S)->mu+ mu-) = 0.283 {\pm} 0.005 {\pm} 0.012 -0.048 +0.025 nb, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the unknown polarisation of the three Upsilon states.
