Inclusive $\bar{B}\to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ at the LHC: theory predictions and new-physics reach
Abstract: We present theoretical predictions for observables in inclusive $\bar{B}\to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ suitable for measurements at hadron colliders through a sum-over-exclusive approach. At low $q^2$ we calculate the branching ratio and three angular observables. At high $q^2$ we provide the branching ratio and the ratio of the $\bar B \to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ rate with respect to the inclusive… ▽ More

Inclusive $\bar{B} \to X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ with a hadronic mass cut
Abstract: The hadronic mass spectrum of inclusive $\bar{B} \to X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ is investigated at next to leading order in the heavy quark expansion. For mild cuts on the hadronic mass, the expansion, which applies when the cut is released, remains convergent. However, the cuts used at BaBar and Belle to reduce backgrounds from charged current semileptonic processes are too severe for a description in te… ▽ More

Long distance effects in inclusive rare $B$ decays and phenomenology of $\bar{B}\to X_d \ell^+\ell^-$
Abstract: Rare inclusive $B$ decays such as $\bar{B}\to X_{s(d)} \ell^+\ell^-$ are interesting probes for physics beyond the Standard Model. Due to the complementarity to their exclusive counterparts, they might shed light on the anomalies currently seen in exclusive $b \to s$ transitions. Distinguishing new-physics effects from the Standard Model requires precise predictions and necessitates the control of… ▽ More

Direct determination of Wilson coefficients using $B^0\to K^{*0}μ^+μ^-$ decays
Abstract: A method to directly determine the Wilson coefficients for rare $b\to s$ transitions using $B^0\to K^{*0}μ^+μ^-$ decays in an unbinned maximum likelihood fit is presented. The method has several advantages compared to the conventional determination of the Wilson coefficients from angular observables that are determined in bins of $q^2$, the square of the mass of the dimuon system. The method uses… ▽ More

Measurement of the Lifetime Difference of $B_d$ Mesons: Possible and Worthwhile?
Abstract: We estimate the decay width difference $ΔGamma_d / Γ_d$ in the $B_d$ system including $1/m_b$ contributions and next-to-leading order QCD corrections, and find it to be around 0.3%. We explicitly show that the time measurements of an untagged $B_d$ decaying to a single final state isotropically can only be sensitive to quadratic terms in $ΔGamma_d / Γ_d$, and hence the use of at least two differ… ▽ More

Direct CP Violation In Radiative B Decays
Abstract: We discuss the role of the radiative B decays $B \to X_{s/d} γ$ in our search for new physics focusing on the issue of direct CP violation. We discuss in some detail a SM prediction for the CP asymmetries in inclusive $b \to s/d$ transitions, namely $\mid Δ{\cal B}(B \to X_s γ) + Δ{\cal B}(B \to X_d γ) \mid \sim 1 \cdot 10^{-9}$. Any measured value in significant deviation of this estimate would… ▽ More

Kaon physics with a high-intensity proton driver
Abstract: We study opportunities for future high-precision experiments in kaon physics using a high-intensity proton driver, which could be part of the front-end of a muon storage ring complex. We discuss in particular the rare decays $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$, $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$, $K_L\toπ^0e^+e^-$, and lepton-flavour violating modes such as $K_L\toμe$ and $K\toπμe$. The outstanding physics potential and long-term… ▽ More

Inclusive Rare B Decays
Abstract: We review the present status of rare B decays, focusing on inclusive decay modes and their role in our search for new physics. We also briefly discuss direct CP violation in rare B decays and the rare kaon decays $K^+\to π^+ν\barν$ and $K_L \to π^0 ν\barν$, which offer complementary opportunities for precision flavour physics.

CP Asymmetries in $b \to (s/d)$ Transitions as a Test of CKM CP Violation
Abstract: We point out that a simple test of the mechanism of CP violation can be performed by a measurement of the CP asymmetries in exclusive and inclusive radiative rare decays. We show that the rate asymmetries $ΔΓ= Γ(B^- \to f γ) - Γ(B^+ \to \bar{f} γ)$} for certain final states $f$ can be predicted in a theoretically clean way. Some implications for $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays are discussed.
