We compute the bulk, $ζ$, and shear, $η$, viscosity over entropy density, $s$, for the QCD matter formed in small collision systems at LHC. We consider a scenario of the String Percolation Model by proposing a global form of the color reduction factor that describes both the thermodynamic limit and its maximum deviation due to small-bounded effects. Our method involves estimations at vanishing baryon-chemical potential, assuming local equilibrium for string clusters in the initial state. To compute $η/s$, we employed a kinetic approach that accounts QCD states as an ideal gas of partons, while $ζ/s$ is computed by using two different approaches: a simple kinetic formula and the causal dissipative relativistic fluid dynamics formulation. Our results align with Lattice QCD computations and Bayesian methods and are consistent with holographic conjecture bounds. Furthermore, our findings support the notion of a strongly interacting medium, similar to that observed in nuclear collisions, albeit with a phase transition occurring outside the thermodynamic limit.

Hot QCD physics studies the nuclear strong force under extreme temperature and densities. Experimentally these conditions are achieved via high-energy collisions of heavy ions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the past decade, a unique and substantial suite of data was collected at RHIC and the LHC, probing hydrodynamics at the nucleon scale, the temperature dependence of the transport properties of quark-gluon plasma, the phase diagram of nuclear matter, the interaction of quarks and gluons at different scales and much more. This document, as part of the 2023 nuclear science long range planning process, was written to review the progress in hot QCD since the 2015 Long Range Plan for Nuclear Science, as well as highlight the realization of previous recommendations, and present opportunities for the next decade, building on the accomplishments and investments made in theoretical developments and the construction of new detectors. Furthermore, this document provides additional context to support the recommendations voted on at the Joint Hot and Cold QCD Town Hall Meeting, which are reported in a separate document.

This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 at MIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. The meeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physics since the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research over the coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physics opportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) and longer term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with the facilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discovery potential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. This White Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail the Recommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the Town Meeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progress and accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, by an overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and in relation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview of the physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devoted to the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion. This is followed by a dedicated section on computing in Section 6. Section 7 describes the national need for nuclear data science and the relevance to QCD research.

Multi-Parton Interactions (MPI) in pp collisions have attracted the attention of the heavy-ion community since they can help to elucidate the origin of collective-like effects discovered in small collision systems at the LHC. In this work, we report that in PYTHIA 8.244, the charged-particle production in events with a large number of MPI (${\rm N}_{\rm mpi}$) normalized to that obtained in minimum-bias pp collisions shows interesting features. After the normalization to the corresponding $\langle {\rm N}_{\rm mpi} \rangle$, the ratios as a function of $p_{\rm T}$ exhibit a bump at $p_{\rm T}\approx3$ GeV/$c$; and for higher $p_{\rm T}$ ($>8$ GeV/$c$), the ratios are independent of ${\rm N}_{\rm mpi}$. While the size of the bump increases with increasing ${\rm N}_{\rm mpi}$, the behavior at high $p_{\rm T}$ is expected from the "binary scaling" (parton-parton interactions), which holds given the absence of any parton-energy loss mechanism in PYTHIA. The bump at intermediate $p_{\rm T}$ is reminiscent of the Cronin effect observed for the nuclear modification factor in p--Pb collisions. In order to unveil these effects in data, we propose a strategy to construct an event classifier sensitive to MPI using Machine Learning-based regression. The study is conducted using TMVA, and the regression is performed with Boosted Decision Trees (BDT). Event properties like forward charged-particle multiplicity, transverse spherocity and the average transverse momentum ($\langle p_{\rm T} \rangle$) are used for training. The kinematic cuts are defined in accordance with the ALICE detector capabilities. In addition, we also report that if we apply the trained BDT on existing (${\rm INEL}>0$) pp data, i.e. events with at least one primary charged-particle within $|η|<1$, the average number of MPI in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ and 13 TeV are 3.76$\pm1.01$ and 4.65$\pm1.01$, respectively.

A brief review of the string percolation model and its results are presented together with the comparison to experimental data. First, it is done an introduction to the quark-gluon phase diagram and the lattice results concerning the confinement and the percolation of center domains. It is studied the interaction of the strings produced in nucleus-nucleus and proton-proton collisions showing how the string percolation arises. The main consequences of the string percolation, concerning the dependence on the energy and centrality, on the multiplicities and the mean transverse momentum are obtained comparing with experimental data. It is emphasized the non-abelian character of the color field of the strings forming the cluster to reproduce the rise of the transverse momentum with multiplicity and the relative suppression of multiplicities. It is also studied different observables like multiplicity and transverse momentum distributions, dependence with multiplicity and transverse momentum correlations, forward-backward correlations, the strength of the Bose-Einstein correlations, dependence on the multiplicity of $J/Ψ$ production and its possible suppression in pp collisions at high multiplicity, strangeness enhancement, elliptic flow, and ridge structure. The comparison with the data shows an overall agreement. The thermodynamical properties of the extended cluster formed in the collision are discussed computing its energy and entropy density, shear viscosity over entropy density ratio, bulk viscosity, sound speed and trace anomaly as a function of temperature, showing a remarkable agreement with lattice QCD evaluations. The string percolation can be regarded as the initial frame able to describe the collective behavior produced in AA and pp collisions.

We investigate whether the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) low x evolution equation is capable to describe the energy dependence of the exclusive photo-production cross-section of vector mesons J/Psi and Upsilon on protons. Such cross-sections have been measured by both HERA experiments H1 and ZEUS in electron-proton collisions and by LHC experiments ALICE, CMS and LHCb in ultra-peripheral proton-proton and ultra-peripheral proton-lead collisions. Our approach provides a perturbative description of the rise with energy and relies only on a fit of the initial transverse momentum profile of the proton impact factor, which can be extracted from BFKL fits to inclusive HERA data. We find that BFKL evolution is capable to provide a very good description of the energy dependence of the current data set, while the available fits of the proton impact factor require an adjustment in the overall normalization.

Our study in terms of the ratio of shear viscosity and entropy density ($η/s$) and the (LQCD) predicted signature of QCD change of phase, in terms of effective number of degrees of freedom ($ε/T^4$), reiterates the possibility of strongly interacting collective medium in these events.

For field theories with a topological charge Q, it is often of interest to measure the topological susceptibility chi_t = ( < Q^2 > - < Q >^2 ) / V. If we manage to perform a Monte Carlo simulation where Q changes frequently, chi_t can be evaluated directly. However, for local update algorithms and fine lattices, the auto-correlation time with respect to Q tends to be extremely long, which invalidates the direct approach. Nevertheless, the measurement of chi_t is still feasible, even when the entire Markov chain is topologically frozen. We test a method for this purpose, based on the correlation of the topological charge density, as suggested by Aoki, Fukaya, Hashimoto and Onogi. Our studies in non-linear sigma-models and in 2d Abelian gauge theory yield accurate results for chi_t, which confirm that the method is applicable. We also obtain promising results in 4d SU(2) Yang-Mills theory, which suggest the applicability of this method in QCD.

In the extreme case one can only perform reliable measurements within fixed sectors. We investigate approaches to extract physical information from such topologically frozen simulations. Recent results in a set of sigma-models and gauge theories are encouraging. In a suitable regime, the correct value of some observable can be evaluated to a good accuracy. In this work, the one-loop contribution of a nonstandard $WWγ$ vertex on the flavor violating quark transition $q_i\to q_jγ$ is studied in the context of the electroweak Yang-Mills sector extended with a Lorentz-violating constant 2-tensor. An exact analytical expression for the on shell case is presented. It is found that the loop amplitude is gauge independent, electromagnetic gauge invariant, and free of ultraviolet divergences. The dipolar contribution to the $b\to sγ$ transition together with the experimental data on the $B\to X_sγ$ decay is used to derive the constraint $Λ_{LV}>1.96$ TeV on the Lorentz-violating scale.
