The transverse momentum spectra and their multiplicity dependence serve as key tools for extracting parameters that can be compared with theoretical models. This comparison aims to establish the behaviour and nature of the system created in the collision. Over the past decade, the scientific community has extensively studied the possibility of a system analogous to quark-gluon plasma, predicted in heavy nuclei collisions, also existing in collisions involving light nuclei and proton-proton collisions. We have reanalysed the experimental data published by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC, exploring a seemingly universal feature of transverse momentum spectra of charged particles. We have identified a specific range where the contribution of the hard part is nonexistent for the studied multiplicities. We present the dependence of the mean transverse momenta obtained in the soft and soft+hard (mixed) parts and discuss the results in the context of the ongoing controversy regarding the existence of collectivity in small systems. Finally, we also discuss possible refinements of the analyses concerning the use of statistical parameters of higher order, aimed at better distinguishing the agreement of theoretical and Monte Carlo models with the data.

The UA1 and CDF collaborations have reported the presence of events with a very extended structure of low momentum tracks filling in a uniform way the $η-\varphi$ phase space. However, these events have not caused interest with respect to the details of the interaction that originate them. We have undertaken to study whether such events are predicted by present event generators like PYTHIA 8. We report the existence of events without any discernible jet structure in high-multiplicity pp collisions. In the simulations those events originate from a moderate number of parton-parton scatterings within the same pp collision. A new event shape, $ρ$ (flatenicity), is proposed to allow for easily triggering on such events.

In the present work we have analyzed the transverse momentum spectra of charged particles in high multiplicity ${\it pp}$ collisions at LHC energies $\sqrt s = $ 5.02 and 13 TeV published by the ALICE Collaboration using the Color String Percolation Model (CSPM). For heavy ions Pb-Pb at $\sqrt {s_{NN}} =$ 2.76 and 5.02 TeV along with Xe-Xe at $\sqrt {s_{NN}} = $ 5.44 TeV have been analyzed. The initial temperature is extracted both in low and high multiplicity events in ${\it pp}$ collisions. For $A-A$ collisions the temperature is obtained as a function of centrality.
A universal scaling in the temperature from $pp$ and $A-A$ collisions is obtained when multiplicity is scaled by the transverse interaction area. From the measured energy density $\bm \varepsilon$ and the temperature the dimensionless quantity $\bm \varepsilon/T^{4}$ is obtained. Our results for Pb-Pb and Xe-Xe collisions show a sharp increase in $\bm \varepsilon/T^{4}$ above T $\sim$ 210 MeV and reaching the ideal gas of quarks and gluons value of $\bm \varepsilon/T^{4} \sim$ 16 at temperature $\sim $ 230 MeV. In case of $pp$ collisions only $\bm \varepsilon/T^{4} \sim $ 10 corresponding to $\sim$ 30 degrees of freedom.

We present the extraction of the temperature by analyzing the charged particle transverse momentum spectra in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) and proton-proton (${\bf pp}$) collisions at LHC energies from the ALICE Collaboration using the Color String Percolation Model (CSPM). From the measured energy density ${\bm \varepsilon}$ and the temperature T the dimensionless quantity ${\bm \varepsilon/}T^{4}$ is obtained to get the degrees of freedom (DOF), ${\bm \varepsilon}/T^{4}$ = DOF ${ π^{2}}$/30.
We observe for the first time a two-step behavior in the increase of DOF, characteristic of deconfinement, above the hadronization temperature at temperature $\sim$ 210 MeV for both Pb-Pb and ${\bf pp}$ collisions and a sudden increase to the ideal gas value of $\sim $ 47 corresponding to three quark flavors in the case of Pb-Pb collisions.

The main characteristic of the approach is that it reaches to extreme multiplicities not yet explored by the experiments. We demonstrate that the behavior of both the underlying and hard components are affected by the multiplicity of the events i.e. the energy density. The behavior of the spectra at very high multiplicities suggests that the partons suffer energy loss compensated by an increase in the multiplicity of events.

In this paper we study the particle production at high transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}>8$ GeV/$c$) in both pp and Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies. The characterization of the spectra is done using a power-law function and the resulting power-law exponent ($n$) is studied as a function of $x_{\rm T}$ for minimum-bias pp collisions at different $\sqrt{s}$. The functional form of $n$ as a function of $x_{\rm T}$ exhibits an approximate universal behavior. PYTHIA~8.212 reproduces the scaling properties and therefore, it is used to study the multiplicity-dependent particle production. Going from low to high multiplicities, the power-law exponent decreases. A similar behavior is also observed in heavy-ion collisions when one studies the centrality-dependent particle production. The interpretation of heavy-ion results requires the quantification of the impact of this correlation (multiplicity and high $p_{\rm T}$) on jet-quenching observables.

The pp collisions have been studied for a long time, however, there are still some effects which are not completely understood, such as the long range angular correlations and the flow patterns in high multiplicity events, which were recently discovered at the LHC. In a recent work it was demonstrated that in Pythia 8, multi-parton interactions and color reconnection can give some of the observed effects similar to the collective flow well known from heavy-ion collisions. Now using the same model, a study based on mid-rapidity charged hadron transverse spherocity is presented. The main purpose of this work is to show that a differential study combining multiplicity and event shapes opens the possibility to understand better the features of data, specially at high multiplicity.

The present study was developed in the framework of Pythia 8.180 for inelastic pp collisions at sqrt(s) =7 TeV. As an application of the method, a study of the identified particle transverse momentum spectra and their ratios; is presented for soft (isotropic) and hard (jetty-like) events. The flow-like effect on these observables due to multi-parton interactions and color reconnection is relevant for soft events suggesting that partons inside the jet do not feel color reconnection and its flow-like consequences.

We use the LO parton matrix elements for 2 \rightarrow 3 processes and include the effect of parton energy loss in the Quark-Gluon Plasma using the modified fragmentation function approach. For the case when the produced hadrons have either same or not too different momenta, we observe two away side peaks at 2pi/3 and 4pi/3. We consider the dependence of the angular correlations on energy loss parameters that have been used in studies of single inclusive hadron production at RHIC. Our results on the angular dependence of the cross section agree well with preliminary data by the PHENIX collaboration. We comment on the possible contribution of 2 \rightarrow 3 processes to di-hadron angular correlations and how a comparison of the two processes may help characterize the plasma further.

In particular, there is a broadening and even a double hump structure of the away-side peak appearing in azimuthal correlation studies in Au+Au collisions which is absent in p+p collisions at the same energies. These features are already present but suppressed in p+p collisions: 2 to 3 parton processes produce such structures but are suppressed with respect to 2 to 2 processes. We argue that in A+A collisions the different geometry for the trajectories of 3 as opposed to 2 particles in the final state, together with the medium induced energy loss effects on the different cross sections, create a scenario that enhances processes with 3 particles in the final state, which gives on average this double hump structure.

We compare the azimuthal correlations arising from three and two hadron production in high energy proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV, using the leading order matrix elements for two-to-three and two-to-two parton-processes in perturbative QCD. We first compute the two and three hadron production cross sections in mid-rapidity proton-proton collisions. Then we consider Au + Au collisions including parton energy loss using the modified fragmentation function approach. By examining the geometrical paths the hard partons follow through the medium, we show that the two away-side partons produced in two-to-three processes have in average a smaller and a greater path length than the average path length of the away-side parton in two-to-two processes. Therefore there is a large probability that in the former processes one of the particles escapes while the other gets absorbed. This effect leads to an enhancement in the azimuthal correlations of the two-to-three with respect to the two-to-two parton-processes when comparing to the same processes in proton-proton collisions since in average the particle with the shortest path length looses less energy with respect to the away side particle in two-to-two processes. We argue that this phenomenon may be responsible for the shape of the away-side in azimuthal correlations observed in mid-rapidity Au + Au collisions at RHIC.

The experimental results on transverse momentum azimuthal hadron correlations at RHIC have opened a rich field for parton energy loss analysis in heavy-ion collisions. Recently, a considerable amount of work has beendevoted to study the shapes of the ``away-side'' jet which exhibit an interesting and unexpected ``double hump'' structure not observed in the analogous treatment of $pp$ data. Driven by the possibility that the latter result might just mean that such structure exists already in the case of $pp$ collisions, but that its relative intensity could be small, here we use the Event Shape Analysis to show that it is possible to identify and select well defined event topologies in $pp$ collisions, among which, a double hump structure for the away-side jet emerges. Using two shape parameters, the sphericity in the transverse plane and the recoil to analyze a sample of PYTHIA generated $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV, we show that this structure corresponds to two jets emitted in the backward hemisphere. Finally, we show that Q-PYTHIA qualitatively reproduces the decrease in the yield of dijet events and the increase of the double hump structure in the away side observed in heavy ion collisions. The implications for the treatment of parton energy loss in heavy-ion collisions are discussed

We propose an scenario to study, from a dynamical point of view, the thermal recombination of quarks in the midsts of a relativistic heavy-ion collision. We coin the term dynamical quark recombination to refer to the process of quark-antiquark and three-quark clustering, to form mesons and baryons, respectively, as a function of energy density. Using the string-flip model we show that the probabilities to form such clusters differ. We apply these ideas to the calculation of the proton and pion spectra in a Bjorken-like scenario that incorporates the evolution of these probabilities with proper time and compute the proton to pion ratio, comparing to recent RHIC data at the highest energy. We show that for a standard choice of parameters, this ratio reaches one, though the maximum is very sensitive to the initial evolution proper time.

We study quark thermal recombination as a function of energy density during the evolution of a heavy-ion collision in a numerical model that reproduces aspects of QCD phenomenology. We show that starting with a set of free quarks (or quarks and antiquarks) the probability to form colorless clusters of three quarks differs from that to form colorless clusters of quark-antiquark and that the former has a sharp jump at a critical energy density whereas the latter transits smoothly from the low to the high energy density domains. We interpret this as a quantitative difference in the production of baryons and mesons with energy density. We use this approach to compute the proton and pion spectra in a Bjorken scenario that incorporates the evolution of these probabilities with energy density, and therefore with proper time. From the spectra, we compute the proton to pion ratio and compare to data at the highest RHIC energies. We show that for a standard choice of parameters, this ratio reaches one, though the maximum is very sensitive to the initial evolution proper time.

Radial flow afterburner for event generators and the baryon puzzle
Authors:

Abstract:
A simple afterburner including radial flow to the randomized transverse momentum obtained from event generators, Pythia and Hijing, has been implemented to calculate the $p/π$ ratios and compare them with available data. A coherent trend of qualitative agreement has been obtained in $pp$ collisions and in $Au+Au$ for various centralities. Those results indicate that the radial flow does play an…

Abstract:
We report the analysis of experimental azimuthal correlations measured by STAR in p-p collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. We conclude that for a fit of data using Pythia event generator we need to include two values of $k_{T}$.

Although not widely known, the pp data measured concurrently with heavy ion collisions do not find a convincing explanation in terms of simple models. We present the results of an afterburner to Pythia and Hijing event generators, simulating radial flow which seems to qualitatively explain the experimental results when applied to the pp collision data from RHIC at 200 GeV center-of-mass energy.

Abstract:
After a short summary of the predictions of the Parton Quenching Model (PQM) for the nuclear modification factor and its centrality dependence in Au-Au collisions at RHIC, we concentrate on back-to-back jet-like correlations at high transverse momentum. We illustrate how this probe is biased by the surface effect.

The HBT radii extracted in p-pbar and pp collisions at SPS and Tevatron show a clear correlation with the charged particle rapidity density. We propose to explain the correlation using a simple model where the distance from the initial hard parton-parton scattering to the hadronization point depends on the energy of the partons emitted. Since the particle multiplicity is correlated with the mean energy of the partons produced we can explain the experimental observations without invoking scenarios that assume a thermal fireball. The model has been applied with success to the existing experimental data both in the magnitude and the intensity of the correlation. As well, the model has been extended to pp collisions at the LHC energy of 14 TeV. The possibilities of a better insight into the string spatial development using 3D HBT analysis is discussed.

Parton energy loss effects in heavy-ion collisions are studied with the Monte Carlo program PQM (Parton Quenching Model) constructed using the BDMPS quenching weights and a realistic collision geometry. The merit of the approach is that it contains only one free parameter that is tuned to the high-pt nuclear modification factor measured in central Au-Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 200 GeV. Once tuned, the model is coherently applied to all the high-pt observables at 200 GeV: the centrality evolution of the nuclear modification factor, the suppression of the away-side jet-like correlations, and the azimuthal anisotropies for these observables. Predictions for the leading-particle suppression at nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energies of 62.4 and 5500 GeV are calculated. The limits of the eikonal approximation in the BDMPS approach, when applied to finite-energy partons, are discussed.
