Let $e$ be an integer at least two. We define the $e$-core and the $e$-weight of a multipartition associated with a multicharge as the $e$-core and the $e$-weight of its image under the Uglov map. We do not place any restriction on the multicharge for these definitions. We show how these definitions lead to the definition of the $e$-core and the $e$-weight of a block of an Ariki-Koike algebra with quantum parameter $e$, and an analogue of Nakayama's `Conjecture' that classifies these blocks. Our definition of $e$-weight of such a block coincides with that first defined by Fayers. We further generalise the notion of a $[w:k]$-pair for Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type $A$ to the Ariki-Koike algebras, and obtain a sufficient condition for such a pair to be Scopes equivalent.

Expected Shortfall (ES), also known as superquantile or Conditional Value-at-Risk, has been recognized as an important measure in risk analysis and stochastic optimization, and is also finding applications beyond these areas. In finance, it refers to the conditional expected return of an asset given that the return is below some quantile of its distribution. In this paper, we consider a recently proposed joint regression framework that simultaneously models the quantile and the ES of a response variable given a set of covariates, for which the state-of-the-art approach is based on minimizing a joint loss function that is non-differentiable and non-convex. This inevitably raises numerical challenges and limits its applicability for analyzing large-scale data. Motivated by the idea of using Neyman-orthogonal scores to reduce sensitivity with respect to nuisance parameters, we propose a statistically robust (to highly skewed and heavy-tailed data) and computationally efficient two-step procedure for fitting joint quantile and ES regression models. With increasing covariate dimensions, we establish explicit non-asymptotic bounds on estimation and Gaussian approximation errors, which lay the foundation for statistical inference. Finally, we demonstrate through numerical experiments and two data applications that our approach well balances robustness, statistical, and numerical efficiencies for expected shortfall regression.

Censored quantile regression (CQR) has become a valuable tool to study the heterogeneous association between a possibly censored outcome and a set of covariates, yet computation and statistical inference for CQR have remained a challenge for large-scale data with many covariates. In this paper, we focus on a smoothed martingale-based sequential estimating equations approach, to which scalable gradient-based algorithms can be applied. Theoretically, we provide a unified analysis of the smoothed sequential estimator and its penalized counterpart in increasing dimensions. When the covariate dimension grows with the sample size at a sublinear rate, we establish the uniform convergence rate (over a range of quantile indexes) and provide a rigorous justification for the validity of a multiplier bootstrap procedure for inference. In high-dimensional sparse settings, our results considerably improve the existing work on CQR by relaxing an exponential term of sparsity. We also demonstrate the advantage of the smoothed CQR over existing methods with both simulated experiments and data applications.

$\ell_1$-penalized quantile regression is widely used for analyzing high-dimensional data with heterogeneity. It is now recognized that the $\ell_1$-penalty introduces non-negligible estimation bias, while a proper use of concave regularization may lead to estimators with refined convergence rates and oracle properties as the signal strengthens. Although folded concave penalized $M$-estimation with strongly convex loss functions have been well studied, the extant literature on quantile regression is relatively silent. The main difficulty is that the quantile loss is piecewise linear: it is non-smooth and has curvature concentrated at a single point. To overcome the lack of smoothness and strong convexity, we propose and study a convolution-type smoothed quantile regression with iteratively reweighted $\ell_1$-regularization. The resulting smoothed empirical loss is twice continuously differentiable and (provably) locally strongly convex with high probability. We show that the iteratively reweighted $\ell_1$-penalized smoothed quantile regression estimator, after a few iterations, achieves the optimal rate of convergence, and moreover, the oracle rate and the strong oracle property under an almost necessary and sufficient minimum signal strength condition. Extensive numerical studies corroborate our theoretical results.

Quantile regression is a powerful tool for learning the relationship between a response variable and a multivariate predictor while exploring heterogeneous effects. In this paper, we consider statistical inference for quantile regression with large-scale data in the "increasing dimension" regime. We provide a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of a convolution-type smoothing approach that achieves adequate approximation to computation and inference for quantile regression. This method, which we refer to as {\it{conquer}}, turns the non-differentiable quantile loss function into a twice-differentiable, convex and locally strongly convex surrogate, which admits a fast and scalable Barzilai-Borwein gradient-based algorithm to perform optimization, and multiplier bootstrap for statistical inference. Theoretically, we establish explicit non-asymptotic bounds on both estimation and Bahadur-Kiefer linearization errors, from which we show that the asymptotic normality of the conquer estimator holds under a weaker requirement on the number of the regressors than needed for conventional quantile regression. Moreover, we prove the validity of multiplier bootstrap confidence constructions. Our numerical studies confirm the conquer estimator as a practical and reliable approach to large-scale inference for quantile regression. Software implementing the methodology is available in the \texttt{R} package \texttt{conquer}.

We consider the problem of learning high-dimensional Gaussian graphical models. The graphical lasso is one of the most popular methods for estimating Gaussian graphical models. However, it does not achieve the oracle rate of convergence. In this paper, we propose the graphical nonconvex optimization for optimal estimation in Gaussian graphical models, which is then approximated by a sequence of convex programs. Our proposal is computationally tractable and produces an estimator that achieves the oracle rate of convergence. The statistical error introduced by the sequential approximation using the convex programs are clearly demonstrated via a contraction property. The rate of convergence can be further improved using the notion of sparsity pattern. The proposed methodology is then extended to semiparametric graphical models. We show through numerical studies that the proposed estimator outperforms other popular methods for estimating Gaussian graphical models.

We consider Bayesian variable selection in sparse high-dimensional regression, where the number of covariates $p$ may be large relative to the samples size $n$, but at most a moderate number $q$ of covariates are active. Specifically, we treat generalized linear models. For a single fixed sparse model with well-behaved prior distribution, classical theory proves that the Laplace approximation to the marginal likelihood of the model is accurate for sufficiently large sample size $n$. We extend this theory by giving results on uniform accuracy of the Laplace approximation across all models in a high-dimensional scenario in which $p$ and $q$, and thus also the number of considered models, may increase with $n$. Moreover, we show how this connection between marginal likelihood and Laplace approximation can be used to obtain consistency results for Bayesian approaches to variable selection in high-dimensional regression.
