Über uns

The Royal Australian Air Force is a world-class military force operating some of the most advanced aircraft and defence technology in use anywhere today. We may be the second oldest Air Force in the world, but we sure look young for our age! Since our formation in 1921 we have set a proud record protecting Australia alongside the Royal Australian Navy and Australian Army. This tradition continues today. Each day, our personnel deliver Australian air power, whenever and wherever, it is needed. Built on the proud history and traditions of the Australian Flying Corps and the Royal Australian Air Force, we will fight and win by generating integrated kinetic and non-kinetic air and space effects across the sea, land, air, space and cyber operating domains. Air Force provides immediate and responsive military options across the spectrum of operations as part of a Whole of Government joint or coalition response. We exploit the air power characteristics of persistent and precision effect, flexibility, perspective, reach, penetration, versatility and responsiveness. We are leaders in command and control of air and space operations; intelligence, surveillance and response; and targeting. We are the leaders for strategic, operational, tactical, technical and logistic management of Australia's military aviation capability. Flying Officer Kim Sim Lee hasn’t looked back since he swapped his international tech career in Malaysia for a life in Australia. ❤ Migrating with his family to Australia in 2015, FLGOFF Lee jumped at the opportunity to embark on a new career in the military and be part of a ‘wonderful country’. “Australia is a beautiful country made up of hundreds of cultural backgrounds, all coming together to share common interests.” As a Logistics Officer in Joint Logistics Command at RAAF Base Williams, Flying Officer Lee believes diverse thinking steers the course of many of the projects he works on. In what is believed to be a first, an all-female security team has deployed internationally and provided airfield security for a VIP visit. 👊 Team Leader Leading Aircraftwoman May Bailey, of number 34 Squadron, said they provided a physical security presence to ensure the aircraft’s safety was maintained during the visit to Laos. “Going places with a RAAF aircraft brings attention, and people are always quite interested. It’s all about being security-minded and not giving away too much information,” said LACW Bailey. Arriving in Laos several days before the VIP, the team met airport staff and gathered information for an airfield survey. They secured the area and conducted a handover with the aircraft’s captain on arrival. The team comprised LACW Briana Stevenson, also of number 34 Squadron, and ACW Sarah Mullineux and ACW Saraiah Walker from number 1 Security Forces Squadron (1SECFOR). • Making an AI breakthrough 📸🔍 Thanks to an image specialist’s out-of-the-box thinking, searching for pictures of aircraft could soon be a whole lot easier. Flight Sergeant Michael Bott has been instrumental in developing an artificial intelligence algorithm that can identify and tag images of specific aircraft types from within a library of millions of images. The idea came after an Edgy Air Force Tinker Thursday workshop, where aviators were asked to think about AI workplace applications. “That's when I had that lightbulb moment, how this would have made my life so much easier,” FSGT Bott said. If an image lacked a detailed description, the only way to identify a Hornet from a Hercules was to review the images one-by-one and update them. Through Edgy Air Force, a design and engineer program where aviators get hands-on with tech to realise workplace innovations, FSGT Bott secured funding and a contractor to develop his algorithm. He said algorithms already existed to identify aircraft in images, but it was a first for Air Force to recognise military aircraft types. • ‘Ask R U OK? Any Day’ 💛   When we genuinely ask "R U OK?" and are prepared to listen to how someone is feeling, we can help them feel connected and supported, long before they’re in crisis.   The theme is, ‘Ask R U OK? Any Day’ because life happens every day. A lot can happen in a year, a month, a week. Whether it’s your friend, family member, colleague, partner, or teammate, the people you care about go through life’s ups and downs every day.   You don’t need to be an expert to reach out, just be willing to listen and provide support.   Support is available 24/7 through Lifeline on 13 11 14, the Defence All-hours Support Line on 1800 628 036 and Open Arms on 1800 011 046.   #RUOKDay #AusAirForce #YourADF

Talk about a tug-o-war showdown! 💪✈ Manually pulling 128 tonnes of aircraft 25 meters across the tarmac may be an impossible feat by yourself, but with a solid team lending a hand, the challenge is on. No. 36 Squadron hosted a C-17 Tug-O-War event at RAAF Base Amberley on 30 August inviting members from around the base to come together, have fun, but importantly, raise money for charity, Due South. Ten teams, comprising of 25 personnel each, participated with the quickest time to pull the aircraft 25 meters being just 22.3 seconds by the Ventia team, closely followed by the No. 33 Squadron team at 22.6 seconds. In total, $5000 was raised for Due South. 📸 | CPL Brett Sherriff #AusAirForce #YourADF
