As BEN’s Inclusion Specialist, Simone said she’s faced many challenging and interesting questions as she’s explored her heritage and legacy. “When we uncovered our heritage, most people asked “How does being Aboriginal make you feel?”, and the answer is that it felt kind of strange and exciting…. and I had a lot of questions. Who was I? Where did I belong? Why is my skin so fair? What do I identify as? “This sense of disconnection consumed me emotionally as I continued to walk in two worlds, not really feeling like I belonged in either. It was in my very late 20's that I decided to acknowledge and explore my story, to learn about my heritage and a culture that I knew very little about, but was somehow connected to through blood. “I’m privileged to be part of the world’s oldest documented living culture that has survived for over 60,000 years, against unspeakable adversity; yet we survived - and in some cases thrived. Whilst my story may not be unique and some questions may never get answered, it comforts me to know that my family’s story is forever woven into this country’s rich cultural fabric, a story that allows me to introduce myself as a proud Mununjali Woman of the Bundjalung Nation." #NAIDOC #KeepTheFireBurning #BendigoBank
