We’ve removed single-use fresh produce plastic bags in our stores across Western Australia, in line with the next stage of the state’s plastic ban which comes into effect on 1 September – a change that will remove 36 million conventional plastic produce bags from circulation in one year. The new fresh produce bags are made from compostable materials including natural plant starch and can be reused to collect kitchen food scraps and then either added to home compost heaps or green council bins in participating Local Government Areas. Coles Group Chief Operations and Sustainability Officer Matt Swindells said “Our customers will now be able to pack their fresh fruit and veg in certified compostable bags that can either be put it in their council bin for those in participating Local Government Areas or added to home compost where it will break down naturally.” Coles partner Planet Ark’s CEO Rebecca Gilling said “Compostable bags help families recycle food waste by providing them with an easy and convenient way to collect food scraps at home that otherwise could have ended up in landfill. This week we recognised Coles’ longest serving team member, Leo McCarthy. Leo joined Coles in 1964 and on Tuesday, celebrated 60 years of loyal service at Coles.   Currently working in our Commercial team, Leo has spent his career working across roles in the Store Support Centre and managing a number of supermarkets and regions across Victoria.  Reflecting on his time at Coles, Leo said that "to me, Coles means family. It was started by the Coles family and the way that Coles looks after people, it's still a family business today."   To celebrate, Leo was presented with the first ever 60 years Coles name badge and a book of special messages from Coles team members. Congratulations to Leo! 👏👏👏

Coles team members have rallied behind the SecondBite Winter Appeal to help raise an incredible $1.4 million for the national food rescue charity. Team members in Coles supermarkets, Vintage Cellars, Liquorland and First Choice Liquor Market across Australia helped raised awareness and funds for SecondBite through activities such as cake stalls, sausage sizzles, donation card walls and dress up days. Team members in Store Support Centres played their part too with SecondBite food drives in Victoria, WA, SA, NSW and Queensland. In Victoria, team members also volunteered their time to help pack over 1,000 emergency food hampers and participated in activities to raise additional funds at the SecondBite Hub activation. It was great to support the future of the Australian sheep and lamb industry at this year’s LambEx Australia event. Congratulations to the winners of the LambEx Coles Trailblazers competition which recognised young professionals that are driving innovation and sustainability in the industry by addressing important issues such as climate change, vaccine development and the optimisation of pasture management. Coles Group General Manager Meat, Deli and Seafood Martin Smithson said “I was blown away by the impressive initiatives that entered this competition, and it gives me great comfort for the future of the sheep and lamb industry. Congratulations to our team involved in the opening of our state-of-the-art Kemps Creek Automated Distribution Centre in Western Sydney this week.   The ADC uses global leading WITRON Group technology and is designed to provide better availability for our customers and create safer, more efficient outcomes for team members and suppliers.   Over 4,400 people contributed more than 1.8 million working hours to building the site and getting the system ready for operation. Once operating at full capacity, the facility will be able to process more than four million cartons per week, the equivalent of 32 million products sold in stores.   Thanks to building partners and consultants from Goodman Group, Richard Crookes Constructions and TMX Transform for developing, building and managing the complex building project to completion.   Leah Weckert / Kevin Gunn / Anna Croft / Sally Fielke

This month, Coles Group team members across Australia are stepping up for PAWGUST, a fundraising campaign for Coles’ community partner Guide Dogs Australia. Throughout the month of August, team members will be encouraged to raise funds and awareness for Guide Dogs’ important and vital work in supporting Australians living with low vision or blindness by participating in physical activities with or without their dogs! Coles was the fourth highest corporate fundraising team for PAWGUST last year and will once again support the campaign, encouraging team members to get involved in the PAWGUST challenge. PAWGUST is just one way that Coles supports Guide Dogs throughout the year. In May, Coles, together with our customers and suppliers, raised $300,000 for Guide Dogs through the “Love your Pet” campaign and since 1982, Coles has raised more than $13 million from Donation Dogs in our supermarkets and Coles Liquor stores. In May, 40 talented women were paired with 40 experienced professionals across Coles Technology and Digital domains, as part the Women in Technology Mentoring Program 2024.   The program is just past the mid-way point and this week the core team caught up with Mentee and Mentor groups to seek feedback and share insights.
