Empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women through alleviating the barriers of accessing basic needs.

Über uns

Women in our own backyard are going without basic toiletries. Accessibility to simple items like deodorant, shampoo and soap prove challenging when the closest store can be up to 1000km away. Some communities are at the end of 750km of harsh, red dirt roads. Others can be cut off by flood waters for months at a time. Some are only accessible via boat or plane. Some communities may be lucky enough to have a small store, but the prices of basic items are exuberant. 19% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are living in unacceptable living standards due to overcrowded housing and structural faults. The target released by the government in the recent Close the Gap Agreement is to ensure 88% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are living in housing of an acceptable standard by 2031. Whilst this would be an improvement, it still will not be on par with non-Indigenous people. Meanwhile there was no mention of the cost of living in remote communities nor any plan to further subsidise basic groceries so that people can afford to shop for their families in their community. We believe this is unacceptable! We want to send as many Happy Boxes filled with self care products as possible. To provide women, regardless of their location and situation, the enjoyment of life’s little luxuries that we regularly take for granted. Matriarchs are the backbone of our communities, Mothers, Sisters, Aunties, Grandmothers; all trying to support their families in adverse circumstances, quite often pouring from an empty cup. If just one Happy Box can fill one person’s cup, then what we do is more than worthwhile. The Happy Boxes Project aim to: Support the empowerment of women through alleviating the barriers of accessing basic needs, Provide opportunities for women to build capacity for individual and community development; and Provide opportunities for women to share story and create connection to nurture positive mental health.

Our communities continue to share with us the impact from the Woolworths Supermarkets Woolworths Group Happy Boxes NAIDOC Week Drive as the Boxes are shared amongst women in community. Words to brighten our day from our coordinator Alarna in Jigalong Community WA. The support our volunteer coordinators give our communities will always amaze us. We could not make this possible without them. “We held a women’s day today in the youth centre. 25 women attended and received a happy box package. Bingo was held, along with lunch, fruit platter and cake. All of the beautiful women present are mothers and grandmothers and raising many children in the community. Playgroup mums were also given happy boxes, some of which are raising 3 or 4 children and working at Playgroup. Thank you for making this event possible 🙂 many happy faces

We are so grateful for the continued support from University of Adelaide. If you are interested in holding your own workplace drive to create Happy Boxes, head to our website to learn more https://lnkd.in/gmSvif2j

National Reconciliation Week’s theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, reminds all of us that the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people must continue and to explore ways in which we can contribute to reconciliation. At Adelaide University Sport and Fitness, we are committed to participation and inclusion across the entire University community. We are dedicated to ensuring that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander athletes are represented and included in our community. In line with this commitment, each year we support a team of students and staff to attend the 2024 UniSport Australia Indigenous Nationals. Details of the athletes and staff traveling to Wollongong in June can be found in our photos. Congratulations and best of luck to the team as they represent the University of Adelaide, competing with universities from all over Australia. At our Women in Sport event this year, we collected donations for the Happy Boxes Project. Thanks to our amazing volunteers, including Alice Sabine, the recipient of the Adelaide University Sport and Fitness, People’s Choice Credit Union Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Athlete Scholarship, we have almost 50 Happy Boxes filled with essential hygiene products for community. They will be sent to remote Indigenous communities to empower women, promote self-care and to help close the gap through provision of essential items. #NRW2024 #NowMoreThanEver

Big thanks to our friends at the Front Bar for giving our Red Dust Bamboo Toothbrush a shoutout on their show last week! 🌿 By switching to our toothbrush you're actively joining a story of impact and reconciliation. Every brush sold helps support mental health and well-being programs in the remote Indigenous communities we proudly work with. Our bamboo toothbrushes also find their way into the hands of youth within these remote areas through Red Dust's school-based programs and partners like the Happy Boxes Project. To learn more or get your hands on a Bamboo Toothbrush Twin Pack for $16, head over to our website: https://lnkd.in/gK3vVr_W Seven Network

We are forever grateful for the continued support from Tsuno. Tsuno pads are a key component to our Happy Boxes which we pack and send. We could not support our Women in Remote and Regional communities without them 💛

To follow on from the announcement of our $40356 donation to One Girl last financial year, I also wanted to let you know Tsuno's impact doesn't stop there. Through our Donate A Box initiative (which was originally started by a Tsuno customer asking to send half her order to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre 🥰) we had 5778 boxes of Tsuno products donated by you lovely souls online to a group of wonderful not for profit organisations supporting people experiencing hygiene poverty in Australia, including Asylum Seeker Resource CentreShare the DignityHappy Boxes ProjectPinchapoo AustraliaAsylum Seekers Centre and National Homeless Collective 💞 Tsuno matched all these donations and added a lot more to meet the growing demand in our community with another 11657 boxes of products. Thank you for making this work possible, and if you'd like to sponsor a period for someone in need in our community, head to our website to Donate A Box as a one off or recurring subscription ❤️ www.tsuno.com.au
