Happy Australian Made Week! 🌏 The NRFC has $15 billion to invest in businesses and projects that design, refine and make here in Australia. Thanks to CommBank Business and Institutional for inviting our CEO Ivan Power to speak at a forum of NSW manufacturers this week. CommBank’s interesting new research shows the strong focus that manufacturing and supply chain businesses have on preparing for the future. 81% are lifting technology investment in 2024, 81% are implementing sustainability measures and 77% are reskilling staff to prepare for new technologies. The NRFC is excited about our role facilitating finance – alongside private capital – to help industry invest, grow and transform.
As part of our commitment to Manufacturing Industry, every year CommBank commission a research project where we connect with 300 Manufacturing decision makers across Australia in various Industry subsectors. This year’s report, also extend to cover distributions companies expanding our research sample size to 460 businesses in the Manufacturing & Distributions industry, ranging from small businesses with turnover of over $500K to larger size businesses with turnover of over $150m. In this year report, we are looking at the macro-economic challenges facing manufacturers and businesses responses to overcome these challenges via productivity improvements, technology adaption, sustainability and renewable initiatives. The last couple of weeks have been busy with a number of Manufacturing events and networking in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Sydney for exclusive preview of the report. Thank you to all of our Guest Speakers and Panellist in each state for well presented relevant topics in Manufacturing Industry. Inspiring Australian businesses and technologies were on show last week at two industry events in NSW and Victoria. We were delighted to exhibit as part of the Australian Government tent at Australian Manufacturing Week in Sydney on 17-19 April, alongside Defence Australia and Australian Government Department of Finance. Fantastic to speak to the Industry Capability Network with Ian Hudson and Marcus Batten and others about the important role of partnerships in driving progress at this annual celebration of manufacturing, organised by AMTIL . And thank you to the Geelong Manufacturing Council for inviting us to be part of the 2024 Technology and Innovation Summit in regional Victoria, which showcased capabilities and opportunities from local to national. Our CEO Ivan Power gave his vision for supporting SMEs and accelerating industrial capability, on a panel alongside David Chuter and Professor Roy Green, chaired by Viva Energy Australia Chair Robert Hill. #innovation #Australia #future #AMW #advancedmanufacturing #technology

Our Chair Martijn Wilder AM highlighted the NRFC's role in Australia's emissions reduction efforts at last night's Australia Japan Business Co-operation Committee (AJBCC) conference dinner. He emphasised the importance of public, private, and foreign investment for sustainable prosperity and that collaboration will be key as both nations aim for net zero by 2050. Thank you to the AJBCC for the insightful discussions! #NRFC #EmissionsReduction #Investment

Thank you to Parliamentary Friends of Manufacturing for inviting our CEO Ivan Power to talk about the NRFC. It was a wide ranging conversation and focused particularly on how the NRFC facilitates, not replaces, flows of capital to build industrial capability. Thanks especially to co-chairs Scott Buchholz MP and Maria Vamvakinou MP for organising the session.

Insightful discussion at the AmCham South Australia business event Industry 4.0 –The Rise of Advanced Manufacturing in Adelaide today. Our CEO Ivan Power talked about the importance of finance to building industrial capability: “The cost and availability of finance matters,” Ivan said in a recorded keynote. “We know that finance plays a critical role in converting potential - it catalyses and amplifies and creates the ecosystems supporting those prepared to take risk… Finance has a big influence on how we innovate and how we build and develop industrial capability. That's where the NRFC comes in. We are Australia's sovereign investor in industry capability. We exist to facilitate flows of finance to support Australians who design, refine and make things in the growth areas of the Australian economy.” The NRFC team at the event including Brett (pictured with AmCham’s Sally Neville) and Andrew (pictured with Bowhill Engineering CEO Jodie Hawkes) heard an excellent panel discussion with Adam Reid, Di Dixon MBA GAICD of Lot Fourteen and Vailo CEO Aaron Hickmann about opportunities to grow South Australia’s industrial capability. Great to have some of our NRFC staff attend the inaugural Trailblazer for Recycling and Clean Energy (TRaCE) showcase earlier this week. Colleagues Mayuran and Chelsea (with TRaCE’s Gabriella Nunes), led by our CEO Ivan Power, were inspired to learn about some of the exciting startups & SMEs participating in the program. A great example of collaboration across public and private sectors supporting Australian innovation and accelerating net zero technologies to market!

Our CEO Ivan Power hearing about inspiring Australian innovation.
I had the privilege of meeting 3 inspiring scientists this week. On Tuesday CSIRO Chief Scientist Professor Bronwyn Fox shared some of her frontline experience from developing Australian industrial capability and showcased amazing world-first industrial-scale 3D printing tech in Melbourne with Professor Suresh Palanisamy, Jimmy Thomas and Christopher Mimra. Companies are already using this unique high-speed machine to make prototype carbon fibre composites for a variety of applications, it was interesting to contrast the automated approach with the traditional one. On Thursday I spoke with Australia’s Chief Scientist Dr Cathy Foley and Australia’s Chief Defence Scientist Professor Tanya Monro AC at the National Quantum Advisory Committee. I’m looking forward to more engagement with them and their colleagues on how the NRF might be helpful in this key area where Australia already shines. What incredible people and capabilities we have in this country, so nice to spend time with them!
