We are thrilled to announce that we've been awarded the Our Marine Parks Grant - Round 4, as announced by Tanya Plibersek! This grant will allow us to expand the Christmas Island Marine Debris Initiative to tackle marine debris issues in the Cocos Keeling Islands. Our project will involve comprehensive beach clean-ups, monitoring activities, and microplastic surveys to address the growing threat of marine debris. US Senator Merkely recently introduced the Fighting Fibers Act of 2024 in Congress. This act will require all new washing machines sold in the US to have a microfiber filter, reducing microplastic leakage into the environment. Clothing is a significant contributor to plastic pollution, with 13 million tonnes of synthetic fabric waste entering our oceans annually, including 2.5 million tonnes via rivers (Mishra et al. 2019). The Australian National Plastics Plan has a target to introduce these microfiber filters to new washing machines in Australia, but not until 2030. Microfiber filters are a near-term, practical, and cost-effective solution. Why are we waiting another six years to implement them? We've just released the 2024 Christmas Island Marine Debris Report! 🎉 This report highlights the incredible work of the Christmas Island community in collaboration with Tangaroa Blue Foundation and Marine Parks Australia to enhance IOT marine park protection. Through rigorous monitoring of key beaches, we've gained critical insights into the threats marine debris poses to marine life in the newly established marine park. We've also enhanced local knowledge and expertise for ongoing marine management and protection.
