Regardless of the team size, it is essential to focus on the fundamental practice of setting clear expectations for oneself and the team. Establishing and communicating expectations is vital for fostering a productive, transparent, and motivated work environment.

When your workforce comprises several generations – as so many do nowadays, owing in part to increasing retirement ages – miscommunications are always a risk without intervention from management.

Coaching within the workplace, is simply a process of delegating thinking to others. Many leaders put off coaching or think they are coaching when, in fact, there is a lot of “telling” going on. My question to them is: “If not now, when?”

Too often than not many of us neglect the importance of creating the space and time to reflect on what we have learnt, where we want to go next and what new boundaries, we need to create to achieve this.

With so many stop-starts returning to the office, uncertainty in our world and life, and the continuation of remote work, it’s no wonder people are feeling a bit overwhelmed and unsure of what lies ahead.

Like catching spinning plates, life can be stressful and full of chaos – from family, friends, work, technology and new ideas to our physical and mental health, we face conflicting priorities daily. Working long hours, leading in a hybrid environment, lack of quality sleep and food; a manic mind and stress can zap our energy. Like a battery, we cannot be charged unless we fill our reserves.

Being a huge advocate for feedback, regular coaching conversations and performance previews, as opposed to reviews, I believe if dialogue and communication is open, clear, and consistent, there should be no surprises.

Working with many leadership teams over the years, we have explored the topic of gratitude and how this is being expressed in the workplace. Call it recognition, praise or appreciation; what stood out is that we need to take the time to show gratitude within and across the teams, we work with.
