We are a coalition of likeminded stakeholders who represent phages in industry, the scientific community and civil society. We want to realize the full potential of phages in Europe. Promoting the widespread use of phages will help us to address critical challenges of our time, including: Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), a major public health threat which is currently responsible for 33,000 deaths per year in the EU alone and adds an additional €1.5 billion to EU healthcare costs. This figure is forecast to rise to 10 million deaths per year by 2050. With a growing population, we will have 10 billion people on the planet by 2050, and we need a way to feed them. Greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural production currently account for 11% of GHG emissions and have risen 14% since 2000. These are just some of the bigger, headline grabbing topics, but the message is clear, we need to find a way to produce more food, more sustainably, with the same or fewer resources, whilst at the same time reducing antibiotic use. It is time to ensure that European farmers have access to the phage technology that has the potential to allow them to achieve these goals. In its Farm to Fork strategy, the European Commission outlined its ambition to make EU food systems healthier and more environmentally friendly, and has adopted an ambitious goal of decreasing the sales of antibiotics by 50% by 2030. In the animal nutrition sector, the European Commission also has a declared objective of creating a more sustainable food production system. Bacteriophage technology can be one part of accelerating the implementation of the One Health and Green Deal agendas and the objectives of countering antibiotic resistance, reducing waste, and promoting sustainable production.

#MeetOurBoard Following decision of 3 companies Proteon Pharmaceuticals, JAFRAL Biosolutions and PTC Phage Technology Center, PhageEU has formalised its activities to effectively represent #phage community towards EU decision makers. Today we are happy to present to you PhageEU Vice President, Mr. Michael Fink: 🔸 Michael Fink is the CEO of Phage Technology Center GmbH and FinkTec GmbH. 🔸 Michael is a Chemist and a Chemical Engineer by education with more than 20 years of experience in the area of farm to fork food safety with focus on product development and regulatory strategy in the food, milk, beer and beverage industry as well as in the dairy and life stock farming sector. 🔸 In 2013 he started to explore the use of bacteriophages as new approach to overcome existing problems in the above-mentioned fields. His diverse expertise and commitment to lead interdisciplinary teams allows to develop novel products and solutions, while always keeping a way for market authorisation in mind.

Today we are happy to present to you PhageEU Vice President, Dr. Frenk Smrekar: 🔸 Dr. Frenk Smrekar is founder and CEO of JAFRAL Biosolutions. 🔸 He has been working in the field of bacteriophage production since he started his PhD in 2005. 🔸 Under his leadership JAFRAL became world's leading CDMO for production of bacteriophages by producing many drug products that were successful used in clinical trial (EU, US, Australia, etc). In parallel JAFRAL is also producing phage products at R&D and commercial scale for other fields: veterinary, cosmetics, food industry and diagnostics.

Today we are happy to present to you our first PhageEU #President, Professor Jaroslaw Dastych: 🔸 Prof. Dastych is the Founder and CEO of Proteon Pharmaceuticals. 🔸 His research spans immunology, toxicology, molecular biology, and the development of bacteriophage-based treatments. 🔸 His passion for bacteriophage research and his understanding of bacteriophage technology as a promising alternative for addressing rising antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) have driven his work to realise the full potential of phages in animal farming, aquaculture, and poultry production, earning international recognition and numerous innovation awards. 🔸 Prof. Dastych has managed twelve European R&D projects, published over 70 scientific papers, and co-authored 13 biotechnology patents, highlighting his extensive expertise and dedication to scientific progress.

📣 Breaking news! We are thrilled to announce, that three companies Proteon Pharmaceuticals, JAFRAL Biosolutions and PTC Phage Technology Center have officially decided today to register a non-profit organisation in the capital of Europe , named PhageEU ASBL. With its seat and secretariat in Brussels 🇪🇺, PhageEU will be well equipped to represent interests of #phage community in order to facilitate access to phage technology in the EU. With newly elected Members of the European Parliament and new College of Commissioners of the European Commission coming soon into the office, PhageEU sees unique opportunity to shape the political and regulatory agenda of the EU, so that the full potential of phages can be used for the benefit of EU citizens, patients and farmers. During General Assembly and 1st Board Meeting we have decided today to appoint: 🔸 Jaroslaw Dastych representing Proteon Pharmaceuticals as PhageEU President, 🔶 Frenk Smrekar representing JAFRAL as PhageEU Vice-President and 🔶 Michael Fink representing PTC Phage Technology Center as PhageEU Vice-President. Margareta Przybyła has been appointed Secretary General to run PhageEU Brussels office.
