Ever hear the phrase “Hole in the Tailpipe”? It refers to automotive emissions legislation that focuses exclusively on “tailpipe” or use-phase emissions. Almost all current legislation focuses on use-phase emissions. Tailpipe-only regulation considers #GHG emissions solely from the combustion of fuel. “Well to Wheel” also considers emissions from fuel production, but is still focused only on the use phase of the vehicle. Both of these fail to capture the emissions from the rest of the vehicle’s life cycle. The right way is Life-Cycle Assessment, which considers emissions from the entire product life cycle, from raw material extraction through to final end of life disposal or recycling. 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫! 3rd-Generation Advanced High-Strength Steels (AHSS) have improved ductility in cold forming operations compared to other steels at the same strength level, offering a cold forming alternative to press hardening steels in some applications. Our Steel E-Motive materials portfolio shows 3rd-gen AHSS with strength levels of 690-980 Mpa all showing at least 20% elongation. For Steel E-Motive, these unique steels can be found in the B-pillar and D-ring hydroformed tubes. 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫! Martensitic steels are characterized by a microstructure that is mostly all martensite, but possibly also containing small amounts of ferrite and/or bainite. Steels with a fully martensitic microstructure offer the highest tensile strength – grades with a tensile strength of 2000 MPa are commercially available, and even higher strength levels are under development. Martensitic steels show the highest tensile strength levels, which was especially important in the Steel E-Motive Front Passenger Protection Zone. 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫! Dual Phase steels consist of multiple microstructural phases. The soft ferrite phase gives these steels excellent ductility. When these steels deform, strain is concentrated in the lower-strength ferrite phase surrounding the islands of martensite, creating a unique high initial work hardening rate (n-value). Complex Phase steels typify the transition to advanced metallurgical complexity to achieve very high tensile strengths while maintaining reasonably good ductility and hole expansion capabilities in localized regions. They play a critical role in hitting the Steel E-Motive performance objectives.
