Heart Mountain Bird Hunt is a mentored program that teaches youth (12 years and older) and adults the basic hunting skills used in upland bird hunting. Then, those skills are put to use on a mentored bird hunt during the winter months. The hunt takes place on a private bird hunting preserve near Cowley, Wyoming.
The program consists of three parts:
- Two shotgun shooting clinics where participants learn safety skills and basic shotgun skills. They will be held at the Cody Shooting Complex trap range on Saturday, June 8, 2024, and Saturday, July 13, 2024. These clinics will be in the morning and will last approximately 3 hours each.
- Participants will complete a simulated bird hunt, during which they will walk through a course that simulates upland hunting, working with a dog and dog handler while experiencing flushing birds. This program will be held on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at the Cody Shooting Complex sporting clays range.
- Your experience will culminate with an upland bird hunt on a private preserve near Cowley, WY with a mentor. The hunt will tentatively take place on Saturday, November 23, 2024.
For parent/child applicants, each individual must complete an application.
Applications are due by May 27, 2023 at 11:59 pm.
The only cost to the participants is that you will need to purchase your Wyoming bird license and conservation stamp. Participants will need to provide their own transportation to the events. For Wyoming residents that have maintained their continuous residency for the past 365 days the combined cost of your license and conservation stamp will be $37.50.
