Recently, the team at our Brighton Beach Generating Station, ‘adopted’ the College Avenue Bikeway, a tree-lined multi-use recreational trail, under the City of Windsor’s Adopt-a-Park or Trail program, which has us sponsoring the cleanup of the park and trail. This is in addition to our financial support for the installation of 21 solar-powered lights on the trail, further demonstrating our commitment to the safety of our Windsor neighbours, and sustainability of our environment. Have you heard about Ontario’s first hydrogen refuelling station for medium and heavy-duty trucks? Atura Power was proud to take part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by ITD Industries Inc. and Nikola Corporation at ITD's headquarters in Etobicoke, Ont. that marked the opening of the province’s first commercial hydrogen refuelling station for long-range vehicles. Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Associate Minister of Energy-Intensive Industries Sam Oosterhoff attended the event, alongside key leaders from the energy, retail and transportation sectors. Representing Atura Power were Matthew M. (pictured speaking), Shira Crawley, David Haughton, Alex Jovicic, P.Eng, PMP, and Kent Keeler. Atura Power’s support for this milestone event underscores our commitment to a low-carbon energy future. We’re also advancing the Niagara Hydrogen Centre which, upon completion, will supply green hydrogen to help Ontario businesses adopt clean-energy solutions. Celebrating the Atura Power Napanee Signing Ceremony🖊️ We are proud to announce that Atura Power, a subsidiary of Ontario Power Generation (OPG), has chosen Mitsubishi Power America’s Advanced Gas Turbine to support the expansion of their Napanee Generating Station (NGS) project in Ontario. This project will include the addition of an M501JAC hydrogen-ready combustion turbine, that will operate in simple cycle and provide up to 430 megawatts of electricity to Ontario’s grid. Due to its operational flexibility and fast start-up times, the M501JAC is adept at operating as a #peaker and will join two M501GAC units already operating in combined cycle at the site. A big thank you to Atura Power! This collaboration underscores our commitment to driving innovation and delivering sustainable energy solutions. Today, Atura Power recognizes Emancipation Day, marking the day that the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 ended slavery throughout most of the British Empire. While the Canadian House of Commons voted unanimously to recognize August 1st as Emancipation Day in 2021, several African-Canadian communities in Ontario have commemorated the day since the 1800s, including those in Amherstberg, Sandwich and the City of Windsor, where Atura Power’s Brighton Beach Generating Station is located. In 2022, the celebrations of Emancipation Day were declared a National Historic Event by Parks Canada. The Hospital for Sick Children – commonly known as SickKids – is Canada's largest children’s hospital. It aims to provide the best child and family-centred care, create ground-breaking clinical and scientific advancements, and develop the next generation of child healthcare experts. The team at Atura Power’s Portlands Energy Centre admires the work that SickKids does. And, as engaged and important members of the City of Toronto’s business community, we’re proud to support the hospital and its efforts to improve the well-being of children in the places where we live and work. Atura Power’s recent donation to SickKids is an example of our community support, as it will help ensure that the hospital has the newest clinical equipment, such as CT scanners and incubators, to enhance children’s medical care, while easing the burden on families. On July 16th, the City of Toronto experienced heavy rain and flooding that caused significant disruptions. Major roadways were shut down, transit lines came to a standstill, and thousands of homes suffered extensive damage. The flooding also knocked out power, leaving thousands of Torontonians in the dark. During this crisis, Atura Power’s Portlands Energy Centre was instrumental in reducing the impact of the power outage, helping restore electricity to more than 160,000 Toronto customers at the peak of the July 16th event. Most of Toronto’s electricity is supplied by a network of transmission lines and transformer stations that bring in power from generation sources outside the city. The Portlands Energy Centre, a 550-megawatt natural gas-fired generating station near Toronto’s eastern waterfront, is the only electricity-producing facility within the city. When the storm hit, electricity supply from the Manby Transmission Station failed, causing a blackout in west Toronto. With Manby down, it left only the Leaside Transmission Station to help power significant parts of the city. Since the Leaside station doesn’t have the capacity to meet the city’s electricity needs, Atura Power's Portlands Energy Centre helped fill this gap, providing downtown Toronto with uninterrupted power for three days until Manby was restored to operation on July 19th. The July 16th flooding underscores the important role that the Portlands Energy Centre’s flexible and dispatchable electricity plays in Toronto’s electricity system. It can be ramped up in all weather conditions when needed, especially during periods of peak demand, and when other power sources aren’t available.
