In the face of escalating climate change impacts, the need for robust monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) systems for climate adaptation has become more crucial than ever. But why? Because MEL is about ensuring that adaptation efforts: ▶ are tracked, assessed and improved ▶ are effective at reducing climate impacts for the most vulnerable ▶ don't leave anyone behind In our latest report, experts Lucy Njuguna, Ike Uri and Emilie Beauchamp dive into the MEL systems in nine different countries (Canada, France, Kenya, Namibia, Peru, Somalia, Tonga, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam) to see what we can learn, and what we can do better. Humans are likely eating significantly more microplastics than we thought. Traditionally, researchers examining microplastics concentration in fish have only looked at the content of the gut. But new research examining fillets of freshwater fish in Humber Bay, Toronto, found that each fish’s fillet, on average, contained 56 particles of microplastics. Assuming humans eat fish twice a week, that’s 12,800 particles consumed per year Researchers at the University of Toronto and Environment, Conservation and Parks | Environnement, Protection de la nature et Parcs say more monitoring and risk assessment will help build a comprehensive picture of plastic pollution in our water, and how it impacts human health. 🌍 Will the Global Minimum Tax Transform Special Economic Zones? The Global Minimum Tax (GMT) is set to reshape how countries use special economic zones (SEZs) to attract investment. These zones have traditionally enticed businesses with tax incentives that may be rendered ineffective under the GMT’s mandated 15% minimum tax for in-scope multinationals. Our expert Alexandra Readhead explores how the GMT will impact SEZs and gives policymakers key recommendations to adapt to these changes, ensuring SEZs that can capture revenue and attract high-quality and sustainable investments. 🌱 At this year's Better Cotton Conference, IISD's Sara Elder joined forces with farmers from India, Mali, and Mozambique to advocate for increased producer inclusion in voluntary sustainability standard setting organizations (VSSSOs). Strengthening producer representation and decision-making power in the governance bodies of sustainability standards like Better Cotton is vital to ensure they stay relevant to the context, priorities, and needs of those they are trying to reach. IISD's work aims to advance sustainable and inclusive value chains through independent research, multi-stakeholder dialogues, and strategic advice to decision makers including standards setting bodies. 📖 Read Better Cotton's top five takeaways from the conference, featuring Sara Elder's message on "Championing Voices from the Field": https://lnkd.in/e4q4SJr6 #BetterCotton #ProducerInclusion #AcceleratingImpact #SustainableFarming

📈 The global economy's plastic use has grown 230-fold from 1950 to 2019 and is expected to triple by 2060. The impact of the resulting plastic pollution on the environment and human life is catastrophic. For #PlasticFreeJuly, we examine the role trade plays in plastic pollution, and how governments worldwide are implementing measures to prevent it. 📌 Read our brief on current trade policy measures against plastic pollution: https://lnkd.in/emyeKP3J Alice Tipping | Ieva Baršauskaitė | Tristan Irschlinger #PlasticTradeSolutions #PlasticPollutionTradeSolutions #PlasticTrade
