Saturday, August 17 was no ordinary day for Seaspan's Vancouver Shipyards - not only did we hold the launch ceremony for CCGS Naalak Nappaaluk, we also hosted thousands of our employees and their families, who entered our gates and witnessed first-hand what a large, modern shipyard looks like. Against the backdrop of the scale, complexity and innovation of our shipbuilding operations, and with live music, interactive stations, and local food, we were so proud to be able to host our employees' loved ones at the shipyard. A huge thank you to the teams and volunteers across Seaspan who helped make the Open House possible!

Start your engines 🏁 A lot of exciting #NationalShipbuildingStrategy updates this month at Seaspan. HMCS Preserver's engines have arrived at Vancouver Shipyards, coming in via Seaspan barge on Sunday night. The two 70-tonne engines for the Royal Canadian Navy | Marine royale canadienne's Joint Support Ships were manufactured by MAN Energy Solutions, and are scheduled to be installed on JSS2 in the coming months.

We can't believe it's already been a week since the CCGS Naalak Nappaaluk launch ceremony! More than 250 distinguished guests attended the celebration, including the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Physical Activity and MP for Delta, the Honourable Terry Beech, Minister of Citizens' Services and MP for Burnaby North - Seymour, Assistant Commissioner of the Atlantic Region for the Canadian Coast Guard, Gary Ivany, who is responsible for the Coast Guard's operations in the region where the vessel will be operating, members of the səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) and, of course, the Nappaaluk family who made the trip to Nunavik for the event. The construction and launch of this highly advanced, Polar Class vessel is an incredible milestone for Seaspan, the Canadian Coast Guard/Garde côtière canadienne, and for shipbuilding in Canada 🍁. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to be at the forefront of having rebuilt the shipbuilding industry on the West Coast. The Canadian Coast Guard/Garde côtière canadienne's newest science research vessel, CCGS Naalak Nappaaluk, is officially in the water thanks to Seaspan's expert Shipyards and Marine Transportation teams, along with a few of our partners ✔ Stay tuned for our official recap video from the incredible launch ceremony.

As the lead designer and shipyard on the Polar Icebreaker program, Seaspan Shipyards welcomes the Canadian Coast Guard/Garde côtière canadienne’s unveiling of the names of its two new heavy Polar Icebreakers, the CCGS Arpatuuq and CCGS Imnaryuaq. These vessels will be the flagship vessels of the Coast Guard’s fleet – the first of which will be built at Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards beginning late this year. Once built, the CCGS Arpatuuq and CCGS Imnaryuaq will be the largest vessels in the Canadian Coast Guard’s fleet, and will provide Canada with the essential capabilities to operate in the Canadian Arctic year-round. Following our recent, successful launch of CCGS Naalak Nappaaluk, the Canadian Coast Guard’s most modern ice capable science research vessel, Seaspan is continuing to design, build and deliver highly capable Polar Class vessels, 21 in total, which puts us in an ideal position to play a major role in the ICE Pact program. Words cannot truly describe how proud the Seaspan team was this weekend at the launch of CCGS Naalak Nappaaluk, the Canadian Coast Guard/Garde côtière canadienne State-of-the-Art Science Vessel. The fourth ship designed, built and launched by Seaspan under the National Shipbuilding Strategy, this weekend's event marks the culmination of years of hard work by our dedicated Seaspan employees and partners, as well as hundreds of others across Seaspan’s cross-Canada supply chain who worked on the vessel 🍁 CCGS Naalak Nappaaluk is named after a well-respected elder from Nunavik, who was a renowned promoter of the Inuit language and culture. The launch of this ship was a historic day for our country, which was made even more special with the participation of Naalak's family in the launch ceremony. It was a pleasure to host Canada's Minister of National Defence, the Hon. Bill Blair, and Australian Deputy Prime Minister & Minister for Defence, the Hon. Richard Marles, at Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards yesterday morning.   Seaspan Shipyards’ CEO, John McCarthy and Senior VP of Operations, Jim Favreau, alongside Mark Lamarre, President and CEO of The Washington Companies, provided a tour of our modern shipyard and its facilities, where they highlighted the significant private investments that have been made to ensure that the shipyard’s equipment, technology, and workforce are prepared to supply the Canadian Armed Forces | Forces armées canadiennes, and its allies, with whatever ships they may require in an ever-changing geo-political environment, now and in the future. This was an opportunity to see the success of the #NationalShipbuildingStrategy on the West Coast first hand, along with the exponential improvements we are driving with each ship we build. It was well-appreciated by members of our skilled trades team that both Ministers took the time out of their tour to chat with them and learn more about their roles and responsibilities.   Canada and Australia have enjoyed a long and harmonious relationship for many generations, bolstered by our shared history, values and friendship. It was an honour for Seaspan to have the opportunity to provide a platform where our two countries could meet and discuss military cooperation between the two nations, including the capabilities of the Protecteur-class vessels that Seaspan is constructing for the Royal Canadian Navy | Marine royale canadienne, HMCS Protecteur, launching in later 2024, and HMCS Preserver. Both of which will support both countries' navies for the next generation of sailors, here in Canadian waters and in the Indo-Pacific.
