With over 18 years of senior leadership experience in various sectors, I am a passionate and compassionate healthcare CEO who holds a MBA (with a concentration in governance for nonprofits), as well as CPHR and CHE credentials. I have a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification and a proven track record of delivering quality, safety, and accountability in complex and dynamic environments.

Currently, I lead The Meadows Home for Special Care, a state-of-the-art provincially licensed facility that enriches the lives of 105 residents every day. I collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of 200 care staff, 100 volunteers, the board of directors, and external partners to implement resident-centered services, safety and environmental initiatives, and a 13 + million operational budget. I successfully navigated my organization through the COVID-19 pandemic, protecting the most vulnerable population. Previously, I was the Head of Human Resources and People Services at South West Health District Health Authority, where I co-led strategic leadership and human capital management for 1,600 employees across multiple sites. I also have experience in leading and directing district operations for continuing care services at the Government of Nova Scotia and am currently a board member for a National board. Experience in project management and leadership in IS/IT cross functional environments.

During the last decade, there has been an increased interest in effective governance practices in organizations across the globe. Many volunteer board of directors of small not-for-profit organizations face challenges in performing their governing oversight duties, and often lag behind corporate entities. Canadian not-for-profit healthcare organizations are involved in delivering complex services with an expansive range of stakeholders that require internally adopted control and monitoring mechanisms, beyond the common regular fiduciary duties that most non-profit boards focus on. Various institutions are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of ``good governance`` and oversight in healthcare, in particular, in the governance of clinical activities. Despite this awareness, adverse events causing unnecessary harm to patients in healthcare is a growing concern in Canada and worldwide. A number of internal control mechanisms exists in both profit, and not-for-profit sectors that can assist board directors in validating compliance, reduce threats and risks to the healthcare organizations they represent, and above all, to the population they serve. The intention of this paper is to research essential areas of oversight, understand how boards perform the oversight function, and identify potential barriers to the oversight function for non-profit healthcare organizations. The research design for this study includes the collection, examination, synthesis, and analysis of qualitative secondary data through a literature review, which critically examines and explores internal corporate governance, monitoring and control mechanisms, categories, and potential barriers applicable for small not-for-profit healthcare organizations. A review of the literature and related theory on governance oversight results in a thematic and diagrammatic framework that identifies governance categories that are important to the oversight in small not-for-profit healthcare organizations.
