International Women’s Day ( website ) is today, and I would like to take this moment to thank the women who have influenced me personally, from my mom to my mentors, and of course, the women at Monster.

In the worldwide race for talent, we at Monster are acutely aware of the need for balanced gender participation in the workforce — which is also the International Women’s Day 2019 theme #BalanceforBetter.

The following are three ways I personally recognize that women contribute to the workplace , each of which has important implications for companies building or using Human Resources technology:

For leaders building teams and looking to foster high group intelligence, women can increase the team’s problem-solving abilities. In his recent book Superminds: The Surprising Power of People and Computers Thinking Together , MIT Center for Cognitive Science founder Thomas Malone observes that a group’s collective intelligence is significantly correlated to the relative mix of women in the group. This he tied to social perceptiveness, defined in his research as the ability to read people. Social perceptiveness, not unique to women but identified as a strength of women, proves to be incredibly important in successfully creating intelligent groups, far more predictive than the average IQ of group members. Technology is making it simpler than ever for organizations to identify, match, and hire talent. Yet this comes with risks of locking in historical biases, since systems are built and trained based on past data. Women and others with diverse perspectives can help avoid and remove bias in algorithms. How? Among other ways, through identifying the unconscious biases in place today or in the past. Diversity helps organizations reach their full potential, and gender is one dimension of diversity. Boston Consulting Group found that diversity is highly correlated to successful innovation. More diverse companies get more revenue from new products and services, and the effect becomes stronger the more complex the company’s business. How are we doing at Monster? At Monster women make up 46 percent of our employee population, and we want to increase the percentage of women in leadership. We are walking the talk: We already have mentoring and sponsorship newly underway for women talent and are introducing a diversity lens in our talent management processes.

At Monster, we recently engaged all colleagues in a dialogue as part of the development of our Monster Values. In our “We think globally and then act collaboratively” value we specifically state that “We embrace all diversity and respect the unique value everyone brings to Monster.” In fact, we recognize that many of the traits that are often observed as women’s strengths are also native to other populations that have been out of power historically and have therefore had to adapt.
