  • Diamondbacks' Eduardo Rodriguez: More mound work

Rodriguez (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Friday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Rodriguez threw off a mound for the first time this season Tuesday and recovered well. He could be cleared to face live hitters after another couple bullpen sessions, which could be the final hurdle before beginning a rehab assignment. Rodriguez has been on the shelf all season due to the shoulder strain and will likely require multiple starts in the minors before being cleared to make his debut for the Diamondbacks.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Dealing with soreness

Gurriel is out of the lineup Thursday to manage "bumps and bruises", Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Gurriel is available as a pinch hitter and there is no indication that he's dealing with anything serious. He should be back in the lineup Friday, but that will be worth confirming before Arizona kicks off a series with Toronto at 9:40 pm ET.

  • Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly: Ready for another bullpen session

Kelly (shoulder) is set to throw a bullpen session Friday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Kelly completed a bullpen session Tuesday, the first time he's thrown from the mound since landing on the injured list in mid-April with a shoulder strain. He'll continue building up his workload before progressing to facing live batters and remains on track for a mid-August return.

  • Diamondbacks' Drey Jameson: Continuing recovery

Jameson (elbow) will throw another bullpen session Friday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Jameson is set to throw his third bullpen session since July 5. He's been ruled out for the rest of 2024, though his progress bodes well for his availability to begin 2025.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Out through All-Star break

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Thursday that Montgomery (knee) could be ready for Arizona's road trip immediately following the All-Star break, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Montgomery is set for a bullpen session Friday, which follows his return to mound work Tuesday after briefly being shut down with knee inflammation. Lovullo didn't give a specific target date for Montgomery's return, though it seems that the left-hander will be able to forego a rehab assignment.

  • Diamondbacks' Alek Thomas: Not starting Thursday

Thomas isn't in Arizona's lineup versus Atlanta on Thursday.

Thomas started in the first three games of the series against Atlanta and tallied just one hit in 11 plate appearances. Jake MCCarthy has the start in center field and is batting fifth.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Sitting Thursday

Gurriel isn't in Arizona's lineup versus Atlanta on Thursday.

Gurriel is on the bench Thursday after going 2-for-11 with a walk in the first three games of the series against Atlanta. In his place, Randal Grichuk is starting in left field and batting third.

  • Diamondbacks' Joc Pederson: Idle versus lefty

Pederson is not in Arizona's lineup versus Atlanta on Thursday.

Lefty Max Fried is on the mound for Atlanta, so Pederson will sit on the bench to begin the game. Ketel Marte has the start as the designated hitter and Kevin Newman is entering the lineup at second base.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Back in action

Moreno is starting behind the plate and batting second Thursday versus Atlanta after being scratched with lower-back tightness Wednesday.

Moreno is set to make his eighth start of the season as the second batter in the order. The catcher was said to be available off the bench Wednesday despite the back issue, but he did not end up seeing any action.

  • Diamondbacks' Slade Cecconi: Optioned to Triple-A

The Diamondbacks optioned Cecconi to Triple-A Reno on Thursday.

Cecconi allowed three earned runs in four innings during his start Wednesday, raising his ERA to 6.14 to go along with his 1.32 WHIP. The return of Miguel Castro (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list will force Cecconi back to Triple-A, where he's posted a respectable 3.38 ERA in 26.2 innings over five starts. Should the Diamondbacks run into any further trouble with their rotation depth, the 25-year-old may be brought back to Arizona, though a few solid outings in Triple-A would certainly improve his chances.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Returns to Arizona

The Diamondbacks reinstated Castro (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Thursday.

Castro pitched two innings in his final rehab appearance Saturday and gave up no runs on one hit with a walk and strikeout. The right-hander is now set to make his return after he landed on the injured list due to right shoulder inflammation back in the last part of April. In a corresponding move, Slade Cecconi was optioned to Triple-A Reno.

  • Diamondbacks' Yilber Diaz: Remaining in rotation

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo confirmed that Diaz will make another turn through the Arizona rotation Saturday versus the Blue Jays at Chase Field, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Jordan Montgomery (knee), Eduardo Rodriguez (shoulder) and Merrill Kelly (shoulder) are all in the midst of throwing programs and may be on track to return from the injured list within a few weeks after the All-Star break, but their continued absences should clear the way for Diaz to stick around in the big-league rotation for a little while longer. Diaz earned a second turn through the rotation after dazzling in his MLB debut Monday, striking out five while permitting just one run on four hits and one walk in a no-decision against Atlanta. Despite his limited big-league track record, the 23-year-old right-hander shapes up as a decent streaming option this weekend against a weakened Toronto lineup that could be without Bo Bichette (calf).

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Cleared to start Thursday

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said that Pfaadt (ankle) will start Thursday's game against Atlanta at Chase Field, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

Pfaadt's most recent start Saturday against the Padres was cut short when he was struck on the left ankle by a comebacker, but he was diagnosed with nothing more than a bruise after X-rays returned negative. The right-hander was able to complete his between-starts bullpen session with no apparent discomfort, so he shouldn't face any restrictions when he takes the hill Thursday on his typical four days' rest.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Nabs 12th save

Sewald pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up the save over Atlanta on Wednesday.

Sewald entered the contest with a two-run lead in the ninth and needed only eight pitches to retire the side for his 12th save of the campaign. It was a nice bounce-back effort for the closer, who had allowed multiple runs and blown a save in his previous three outings. It was also Sewald's third appearance in which he didn't allow any hits or walks over his last six.

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Goes deep in win

Suarez went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, three RBI and an additional run scored in Wednesday's 7-5 win over Atlanta.

Suarez launched a no-doubt, two-run home run to left field in the second inning to tie the game. He later delivered a run with a seventh-inning double. It's a small sample size, but Suarez may be emerging from a season-long slump. He was batting .192 with a .584 OPS as recently as June 23, but the third baseman has posted a .298 average and .942 OPS in the 14 games since, including two home runs and nine RBI over the last four contests.
