  • Brewers' Aaron Civale: Outdueled in loss

Civale (2-7) took the loss Thursday against Pittsburgh, allowing one run on six hits and two walks across 6.1 innings. He struck out six.

Civale blanked the Pirates until the seventh inning when he allowed a single, an RBI double and a walk before being pulled with one out. His one run allowed proved to be the difference, as the Brewers only managed two hits on the day, both of which came in the eighth inning. Though it'll get marked as a loss, Thursday's outing marked Civale's first time pitching into the seventh inning and was his first quality start since April 16. In two starts with the Brewers, Civale has surrendered five runs over 11.1 innings and owns a 14:5 K:BB.

  • Brewers' Joe Ross: Covers 3.2 innings in rehab start

Ross (back) struck out three over 3.2 scoreless innings in his rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Nashville. He scattered two hits and one walk in the 46-pitch start.

Ross took the hill on three days' rest for his second minor-league rehab start, after he had previously covered 2.2 innings and 34 pitches in his first rehab outing with High-A Wisconsin this past Saturday. The right-hander recorded his 11 outs in efficient fashion Wednesday and should continue to build up his pitch count over the course of at least two more rehab starts. He could return from the 60-day injured list and return to the Milwaukee rotation shortly after the All-Star break.

  • Brewers' Devin Williams: Starting rehab assignment Saturday

Williams (back) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Wisconsin on Saturday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

After he tossed a live batting practice session Tuesday in Milwaukee without incident, Williams will move on to the final stage in his prolonged recovery from a pair of stress fractures in his back, an injury he suffered in spring training. As a late-inning reliever, Williams won't require an extensive buildup, but he's still likely to remain on his minor-league rehab assignment once the Brewers open their post-All-Star-break schedule July 20. A return from the 60-day injured list before the end of July can't be discounted, however, especially if Williams looks healthy and pitches effectively during his time in the minors. Once activated, Williams should settle back in as Milwaukee's closer after he racked up 51 saves and posted a 1.73 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 126 appearances between the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

  • Brewers' Blake Perkins: Getting fifth straight start

Perkins will start in center field and bat ninth in Thursday's game against the Pirates.

Though he'll stick in the lineup for a fifth straight start after going 4-for-15 with a home run, three walks and a stolen base across the prior four contests, Perkins still looks to be the Brewers' fourth outfielder. Each of Perkins' prior four starts came against left-handers, and he'll remain in the lineup Thursday against Pirates right-hander Paul Skenes while Jackson Chourio exits the starting nine in what appears to be a routine off day. Some combination of Chourio, Garrett Mitchell, Sal Frelick and Christian Yelich still appears to be the Brewers' preferred starting outfield trio and designated hitter versus right-handed pitching.

  • Brewers' Jackson Chourio: Getting afternoon off

Chourio is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Pirates.

Blake Perkins will pick up a start in the outfield while Chourio heads to the bench after he had been included in the lineup in each of the previous six games. The 20-year-old rookie has been one of the hotter hitters in the Milwaukee lineup of late, slashing .340/.397/.547 with seven extra-base hits (two home runs, five doubles) and two stolen bases over his last 15 games.

  • Brewers' Rhys Hoskins: Retreating to bench

Hoskins is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Pirates.

Hoskins will get a breather for Thursday's matinee contest after he had started in each of the last seven games while going 4-for-25 with three home runs and six RBI. Jake Bauers will pick up the start at first base in Hoskins' stead.

  • Brewers' Andruw Monasterio: Swipes bag in win

Monasterio went 2-for-3 with a walk, one RBI, one stolen base and one run scored in Wednesday's 9-0 win over the Pirates.

Monasterio has a pair of multi-hit efforts over seven games in July, but he's gone hitless in four other contests this month. The infielder is slashing a meager .200/.286/.267 with one home run, nine RBI, nine runs scored and four stolen bases across 84 plate appearances. While Joey Ortiz (neck) is on the injured list, Monasterio has shared third base with Vinny Capra, though neither player has done much with their extra playing time.

  • Brewers' Blake Perkins: Registers steal Wednesday

Perkins went 0-for-3 with two walks and a stolen base in Wednesday's 9-0 win over the Pirates.

Perkins was hitless for just the second time over six games in July, but he was still able to make an impact on the bases. The outfielder is 6-for-19 (.316) with three walks this month. For the season, he has 14 steals on 16 attempts, six home runs, 28 RBI, 38 runs scored and a .249/.326/.365 slash line through 279 plate appearances. The switch hitter has benefited from a run of four straight opposing southpaws, starting each of those games to give Garrett Mitchell and Sal Frelick each two off days. Perkins doesn't have a spot in the lineup regularly against right-handers and hasn't started against one since June 28.

  • Brewers' Rhys Hoskins: Goes yard in win

Hoskins went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 9-0 win over the Pirates.

Hoskins is just 4-for-30 (.133) in July, but all of those hits have gone for extra bases, including three homers. The first baseman is up to 14 long balls on the year, though his power hasn't fully returned after he missed all of 2023 with a torn left ACL. He's batting .218 with a .733 OPS, 44 RBI, 29 runs scored, eight doubles and two stolen bases through 71 contests this season.

  • Brewers' Christian Yelich: Adds another steal Wednesday

Yelich went 2-for-3 with a walk, one stolen base and one run scored in Wednesday's 9-0 win over the Pirates.

Yelich has a steal in consecutive games, and he's swiped six bags without getting caught over his last 13 contests. In that span, he's batting .408 (20-for-49) with an 8:6 BB:K. The outfielder hasn't seen his batting average dip below .300 since May 30, and he's now slashing .335/.417/.534 with 11 home runs, 21 steals, 41 RBI and 43 runs scored over 67 games this season.

  • Brewers' Sal Frelick: Gets on base four times in win

Frelick went 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, a walk, one RBI and one run scored in Wednesday's 9-0 win over the Pirates.

Frelick had gone 5-for-26 (.192) over his last nine games since his previous multi-hit effort. He came up a home run shy of the cycle Wednesday, but that was likely to be a longshot since he has just two long balls on the year. The outfielder is slashing .269/.345/.345 with 19 RBI, 41 runs scored, 12 stolen bases, 11 doubles and two triples across 83 contests. Frelick isn't strictly confined to a platoon role -- he's started twice during a run of four consecutive opposing southpaws -- but most of his off days will come versus lefties.

  • Brewers' Willy Adames: Fuels offense in win

Adames went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run, an additional RBI, one double and two total runs scored in Wednesday's 9-0 win over the Pirates.

Adames plated the game's first run with an RBI double before putting a bow on the scoring with his eighth-inning homer. The shortstop is batting .343 (12-for-35) over nine games in July after going hitless over his last six games in June. For the season, he's up to 14 homers, 62 RBI, 49 runs scored, 12 stolen bases, 21 doubles and a .240/.327/.418 slash line through 404 plate appearances.

  • Brewers' Tobias Myers: Twirls gem versus Pirates

Myers (6-3) allowed four hits and a walk while striking out six over eight shutout innings to earn the win Wednesday over the Pirates.

This is the second time in 14 appearances (13 starts) this season Myers has managed to toss eight scoreless frames, having also done so versus the Tigers on June 7. The right-hander has a quality start in five of his last seven outings. He's pitched to an excellent 3.13 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 62:20 K:BB through 72 innings. Joe Ross (back) may be able to return to the Brewers' rotation in late July, but Myers looks to have done enough to keep a starting role throughout the campaign.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Beginning assignment Thursday

Ortiz (neck) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Wisconsin on Thursday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Neck inflammation has kept Ortiz on the injured list since July 3, though his neck issues can be traced back to late June. The Brewers haven't officially stated how many games they plan on having the third baseman play in the minors, though the fact he's headed to High-A Wisconsin may indicate the team wants to keep him nearby for activation once he's eligible to return from the IL on Friday.

  • Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Improved prognosis

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Wednesday that Sanchez was initially expected to miss 12 weeks with his left calf strain, but the veteran catcher could make his return from the 10-day injured list in as few as six weeks, Jack Stern of BrewerFanatic.com reports.

The 31-year-old landed on the shelf in late June, though there was no inkling at the time he was dealing with an especially serious injury. Murphy didn't provide a precise target date for Sanchez's return, but at the very least, he shouldn't be expected back prior to the All-Star break.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Idle versus LHP

Mitchell isn't in the Brewers' lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates.

The left-handed-hitting Mitchell will step out of the lineup Wednesday with left-hander Martin Perez slated to start on the mound for Pittsburgh. Blake Perkins will get the nod to start in center field instead, batting seventh.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Rehab extended

Hall (knee) didn't suffer a fracture after getting hit in the forearm by a comebacker Tuesday during his rehab outing with Triple-A Nashville, but he'll be shut down from throwing for 3-to-10 days, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Tuesday was originally expected to be Hall's final rehab outing, but his stay in Nashville will once again be extended while he recovers from the forearm injury. The Brewers haven't yet specified a new target date for Hall's return to Milwaukee, though a timeline may emerge once he's cleared to resume throwing.
